Natural stone is one of the most beautiful materials available for residential and commercial design. Each piece is unique and can fit effortlessly into a variety of decors, making it a top choice for consumers and designers. While natural stone is a popular material, there are several myths surrounding its use that cause homeowners to question its practicality.
Myth: Natural Stone is Delicate and Requires Maintenance Softer stones, such as marble or limestone, can be susceptible to etching or scratching. However, this can be prevented by taking simple measures.
Myth: Natural Stone Stains Easily Staining is a big concern for many homeowners considering natural stone. A common misconception is that common products like red wine, cosmetics or coffee will stain natural stone countertops beyond repair. While staining can occur on any light colored material, including some lighter stones, Carl Vona Jr., president of Paramount Stone in Stamford, Connecticut, says that most stains are treatable. “We can always troubleshoot the problem,” he said. “If you know the origin of the stain, you can care for it.” Jennifer M. Foresman, owner of Madison & Wells Design in Atlanta, Georgia, recommends being mindful of material choice if stains are a concern. “If a client wants white marble for their bathrooms, I would recommend using it in the master bath rather than a child’s bathroom,” Foresman said. “White granite would be a beautiful option for a child’s bathroom – it gives a similar look but is more stain resistant.”
Myth: Natural Stone is Expensive Natural stone is often found in high-end projects, but that doesn’t mean it is out of reach for more modest budgets.
Dispelling Myths About
Natural Stone
For instance, the cost of natural stone countertops depends on a variety of factors, including availability and demand. “Prices vary depending on the movement of the slab and the color,” said Susan Thiel, founder of Susan Thiel Design in Los Angeles. “Sometimes we find that natural stone is less expensive than manmade materials.”
Always use a cutting board when preparing food on natural stone countertops, especially with acidic foods such as tomato sauce or lemons. Consider using coasters and trivets under glasses and hot pans. Clean up spills as quickly as possible. Do not use harsh cleaning products on natural stone – instead, choose a gentle cleanser and a soft cloth.
Myth: Natural Stone Goes Out of Style While particular colors and finishes may come in and out of fashion, natural stone is a timeless, classic material. “You can’t go wrong,” Thiel said. “Natural stone is beautiful and durable.” Natural stone also adds a level of romance not found in any other product. “It offers a sense of history, nature or drama to a space while always feeling authentic,” Foresman said. “Stone also brings depth and texture to a space that is hard to replicate. It’s been used for centuries as a building material; while it can change in appearance over time, most styles age very gracefully.” For more information on natural stone care and maintenance, and to find a stone supplier in your area, visit usenaturalstone.com. avoid mosquito bites and stay informed on the best ways to keep you and your family protected.
non-porous outdoor surfaces for up to eight weeks. Always read product directions prior to application.
“As the world’s largest, privately owned urban entomology research lab, we have over 60 years of experience studying insects,” said Dr. Tom Mascari, researcher, SC Johnson Entomology Research Center (ERC). “Seven days a week, 365 days a year, we study about 20 different species of insects — including six species of mosquitoes — which makes us leaders in this field and solidifies our commitment to educate families on how to stay protected.”
Protect
Dr. Mascari and his colleagues at the ERC offer these helpful tips so that you can enjoy your summer and stay protected from mosquitoes.
Scientists at the SC Johnson Entomology Research Center.
Prepare
Keep your family protected from pesky mosquitoes this summer Summer is here, which means you can count on two things: warm weather and mosquitoes. From backyard barbecues and neighborhood get-togethers, to baseball games and trips to the beach, families all over the country are spending more time outdoors enjoying the weather. As concerns about the spread of mosquito-borne diseases increase, it is important to take proper precautions to
Remove standing water. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so removing it from your property can reduce their numbers. Rain gutters, buckets, bird baths or fountains with stagnant water are all possible breeding sites. Plan activities outside of peak mosquito hours. Mosquitoes bite at any time of the day, but many types are most active around dusk and dawn. If possible, schedule your outdoor activities to avoid these times, and have personal repellent on hand to protect yourself and your family. Apply a pest pretreatment to your yard. A pretreatment product, like OFF! Backyard, helps protect your yard from mosquitoes and other insects. Some product applications kill insects on treated hard,
Apply personal repellent. Applying a repellent, such as OFF!, can help protect you from mosquitoes. Choose among pump sprays, aerosols and towelettes that contain active ingredients such as DEET or Picaridin. If you plan to wear sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and then insect repellent over it. Wear appropriate clothing. Choosing the right clothes can help reduce mosquito bites. When weather permits, wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors. Mosquitoes can bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with an insect repellent will provide extra protection. Consider wearing light-colored clothing as mosquitoes can be more attracted to dark-colored clothing. Use spatial repellents for an added layer of protection. Area mosquito repellents such as OFF! candles, lamps and foggers are used to reduce encounters between humans and mosquitoes in a broad area, including outdoor seating areas or around the yard. As always, be sure to read the label directions of any product before use. For more information from our experts and entomologists on how to protect your family, please go to www.scjohnson. com/mosquitoes.

Marinades add flavor
Deborah ah Martin Giese
Defined as a savory acidic sauce in which food is soaked to enrich its flavor, marinades help break down fiber and tenderize certain foods. The base of many marinades include vinegar, lemon juice or wine, and marinades can be enhanced with spices, oil and herbs.

It’s important not to let foods sit in marinades for too long, as any alcohol, acid or salt in the mixture can chemically “cook” the food in a process known as “denaturing.” Adhere to timing recommendations when using store-bought marinades, and keep such guidelines in mind when using homemade marinades as well. Many may tell you to let foods sit no longer than four hours. Marinades with citrus juices may require even less time for flavor to penetrate.

The timing of marinade use also will depend on the foods being marinated. Delicate items, such as seafood, may change with regard to texture or color in a matter of minutes. It’s important to always marinate foods in the refrigerator. Food left sitting out on a counter — even when it’s in a marinade — invites the

When marinating, use plastic or glass containers so the marinade does not cause a chemical reaction, which may occur if you marinate foods in metal containers. Discard all marinades for raw meats and poultry when the time comes to cook the foods, as leftover marinades may contain bacteria that makes them unsafe to reuse on other foods.
The nutritional benefits of marinating In addition to flavor, marinades may improve the nutritional value of grilled foods. In 2008, researchers at Kansas State University
discovered that marinating meat in antioxidant-rich spice blends can reduce the risk of forming heterocyclic amines, or HCAs, by more than 80 percent. HCAs are harmful, cancer-causing compounds that form when food chars over an open flame at high temperatures. Marinades must be rich in spices to have any HCAbusting properties. Marinades are a secret weapon in the creation of tasty, tender and healthy foods. They come in quite handy when grilling, and add an extra dose of flavor when cooking over high heat. TF167209

ORION (406-50) LIVING SPACE: 1,028 SF
The Orion (406-50) is compact home, uniquely designed with an open floor plan, two-car garage, and many amenities that larger homes have available. This home, with 1,028 square feet of living area, is reminiscent of the homes that many young adults grew up enjoying. The two-car garage has 588 square feet with brick facing for decoration. There are four windows, allowing plenty of light to filter into the area. There is a storage area in the rear right corner, a door into the utility room, and a door to the backyard.
Orion
The entry to the home is through a covered porch with a railing. This type of porch lends itself to the ranch style home, which is so popular in many parts of the nation at this time. The vaulted entry has a coat closet across from the door, and the balance of the area is open from front to back. The vaulted living room is to the left of the entry, with three windows providing light to the room. Beyond the coat closet, with a full builtin shelf overhead, is the nook area, a wonderful corner kitchen in the rear, and a vaulted dining room to the left rear with sliding doors to the back deck. Over the ends of the kitchen cabinets are built-in shelves over the top for displaying those decorative breakables. The range and oven are on an island shared with a raised eating bar. The kitchen along with rest of this open area is vaulted. The vaulted living room has a built-in entertainment center with a linen closet beyond. Off this same area is a full bath, both for the home and the bedrooms. At the other end of the hall is the utility room with a washer and dryer with cabinets overhead. There are two bedrooms in this home. Bedroom 1 is slightly larger than bedroom 2. Both have wall closets, but bedroom 1 has windows on two sides that provide an open, airy look to the room. The Orion would be an excellent home for the retiring couple or a great starter home.
