home’s exterior living space. Patio (or deck) perfection can be within your reach this season. Simply follow these seven steps to create an outdoor environment where you’ll be proud to entertain all summer long.
1. Update your patio furniture.
Daffodils bloom brightly by the back door, temperatures are balmy, cookout season is on the horizon and you’re ready to give your outdoor living space a breath of fresh
air. Great patios and decks enhance your enjoyment of spring and summer, and boost home value, so it’s well worth the investment to update and upgrade your
Whether your current patio set is worn out, you need more seating or are just in the mood for a whole new look, new patio furniture can change the way you feel about your outdoor environment — and how much time you spend there! Whether you want traditional wicker, durable metals or exotic woods like Eucalyptus, you can find the right dining set, settee, chaise lounge,
glider, ottoman, coffee table, rocker or swing among the 50,000 individual home decor items carried by every At Home store.
2. Replace cushions on your current set. If your current patio furniture is in good shape but just in need of some freshening, it’s easy enough to give it new life with small tweaks like updated patio cushions. Cushions are the crowning touch to catch the eye on patio furniture, and you can find hundreds of patterns, shapes and styles of patio pillows and cushions at At Home.
3. Add a water feature One of the best ways to
create your own oasis can be with a water feature. Easy to find and simple to set up accessories like a fountain can bring the harmony of water to your outdoor environment. For example, those with a waterfall feature immediately create a feeling of Zen and help drown out the noise of everyday life.
4. Make some shade. When you need a break from the sun, but aren’t ready to head indoors, shade can help you stay outside so you can enjoy the fresh air longer. You can add shade in many ways, from installing a retractable awning over the deck or patio to strategically planting trees or climbing vines on a trellis. And of course, the simplest way to add shade is to use patio umbrellas, which are available in a wide range of hues, patterns and styles.
5. Heat up your grilling station. What outdoor environment would be complete without a great grill? Accessories make grilling fun and easy, and ensure you’ll look and operate like a pro when whipping up summer fare. From grilling mitts to barbecue tool sets, burger and kabob grilling baskets, grill toppers and even taco shell baskets, you can outfit your grill station with
everything you need for a great grilling experience.
6. Lighten up. When you’re having a great time outdoors, who wants to go inside just because it’s dark? Add some lighting to your outdoor living space to create ambiance and allow you to enjoy your patio long after the sun goes down. You can invest in hard-wired patio or deck lights, go ecofriendly and easy with solar lights, or choose from an array of battery-powered or candle-fired lanterns.
7. Use decor to create a theme. Just as your home’s interior has a design theme, choosing a theme for your patio or deck can pull the look together. Whether your taste is Boho Chic, Tribal or Weekend Getaway, you can find decor items that underscore the theme. Wall decorations, outdoor rugs, decorative planters and flower pots, wind chimes and statuary all work together to create a look you’ll love throughout the spring and summer. The perfect patio — and hours of outdoor enjoyment — is within reach this spring and summer. To find an At Home store near you, visit www.athome.com.

“A home is one of the most important assets that most people will ever buy. Homes are also where memories are made and you want to work with someone you can trust.”

stainless steel appliances and plenty of storage space. Homes even come pre-wired for high speed Internet, telephone and digital cable TV. “You just don’t find features like these in an older home or even in newer homes that cost a lot more,” says Powers. Sally Horvath is Vice President of Sales and Marketing for The Dragas Companies, the local builder behind King’s Pointe. Over the past 48 years, The Dragas Companies has developed and built more than 35 award-winning condominium communities in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, each one a testament to the company’s founding mission. “Our goal has always been to make home buying possible and affordable for first-time homebuyers and others looking for well-built homes in well-planned communities,” says Horvath noting that the company’s involvement in the entire development of a property — from finding the land to designing the community to building, selling and even financing the homes — allows them to make sure that that quality standards are met on every front. It also allows them to offer special incentives in addition to the already-low monthly payment. For a limited time, for instance, select homes at King’s Pointe are eligible for a $10,000 allowance to use however a buyer needs, plus all closing costs and prepaids covered at closing, and a free moving package. “Buying a first home, or any home for that matter, is a big investment,” says Horvath. “It’s nice to know there’s an experienced company behind your new home and people who are invested in its quality and value.”
At King’s Pointe, First-Time Homeowners Don’t Have To Choose Buying a first home used to mean settling for a small fixer-upper in a less than perfect neighborhood. Not anymore, says Katie Powers, Sales Manager for The Dragas Companies’ King’s Pointe condominium community in Chesapeake’s Western Branch. Powers and fellow Sales Manager Anna Gaskins say they’re selling new homes to more and more first-time homebuyers, who realize they could own a brand-new home in a beautiful new community for less than they’re paying in rent. “Many have spent months looking at places in their price range in Hampton Roads,” she says. “They tell us everything out there is either old and run-down or built for the way people used to live—small kitchens, no closets, things like that.” Powers and Gaskins both say the
opportunity to own a stylish new 2-bedroom home for under $900 a month is a huge selling point but by no means the only one. The community’s central location, just minutes from the MonitorMerrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, makes it an easy commute to NASA/Langley, Newport News Shipbuilding and other major employers on the Peninsula. “The location is pretty hard to beat, especially for people who work on the Peninsula,” says Powers. King’s Pointe homeowner Sarah Sledge is one of them. “This really is the perfect place,” says Sledge. “I work in Newport News and my husband works in Norfolk. We both wanted a place to call home where neither one of us would have a huge drive.”
Being close to businesses, schools, shopping and entertainment on both sides of the water is a key advantage but it’s the look and feel of the community and the quality and affordability of the homes themselves that really close the deal. “We hear it from homeowners all the time,” says Gaskins. “King’s Pointe is just a nice place to come home to.” Nestled in a 14-acre forested preservation area, King’s Pointe at Western Branch has its own private pool, neighborhood clubhouse and landscaped grounds that are carefully and continuously maintained. Attractive, low maintenance homes at under $900 a month include 2-bedroom garden-style flats with open, airy floor plans and details today’s homebuyers are looking for — spacious living areas, modern, updated kitchens, all-new
King’s Pointe model homes are open for tours seven days a week. It’s definitely worth a visit, says Horvath, especially if you work on the Peninsula and are still renting. “You’ll be surprised at how close it is and amazed at how affordable.” For more information about King’s Pointe at Western Branch or to schedule a personal tour, call site agents Katie Powers or Anna Gaskins at 757.606.2999 or visit us at dragas.com. *Payments of $848.11 PITI based on $149,900 sales price, VA 30 year fixed rate loan with zero down payment at 3.375% rate (3.6528% APR) (rate, sales price and incentives as of 7/6/2016 and are subject to change). The home improvement market, which includes both improvements and maintenance, has rebounded considerably from its most recent low point in 2011. The Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) of Harvard University indicated in early 2015 that the upcoming year would surpass the $324 billion spent on improvements during the peak of the housing boom a decade ago. Even though homebuilding and the home industry in general is still not at complete recovery, trends within the home improvement industry do suggest that homeowners have once again become comfortable investing in their homes. Hydrate
your way to a
healthy summer Staying well-hydrated is especially important during the summer months. In addition to normal body functions, higher temperatures draw more water through perspiration, so consciously replacing your fluid content becomes essential for overall health. “Every system in your body — from reproduction and digestion to circulation, mood and memory — depends on water,” said Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D., and author of several nutrition and wellness books. However, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 44 percent of adults drink fewer than four cups of water per day (less than
half of the recommended eight glasses per day), and in some cases, no water at all. What many people don’t realize is that beverages aren’t the only way to hydrate your body. In fact, waterdense foods such as watermelon can also boost your hydration. Sweetly flavored, low-calorie watermelon is 92 percent water and offers several nutrients along with the cancerfighting antioxidant lycopene. Whether eaten out of hand, tossed into a salad or blended in a healthy beverage, there are dozens of delicious ways a healthy serving of watermelon can help hydrate.
Crave-worthy snacks. Thoroughly chill the watermelon then slice, ball or cube it for a quick, refreshing and juicy boost. For kids, cut one-inch slices of the watermelon then use cookie cutters to make fun shapes for snacking.
Blend 2-3 cups watermelon at a time until smooth. Strain into serving pitcher, if desired. Note: If not strained, juice will need to be stirred until blended prior to serving #13188

Frozen treats. Puree watermelon, add chunks of fruit and pour into freezer molds for a sweet way to beat the heat. Healthy juices. Make a simple Watermelon Juice for a great postworkout snack, or try this flavorful Watermelon Lemonade to put a fresh spin on a summertime favorite. Another option: add watermelon to your favorite fruit shakes or smoothies for a new flavor twist. Salads and sandwiches. Easily add extra hydration into your regular meals by tossing chunks of watermelon into a salad or layering strips of the fruit on a sandwich or wrap.
