to grow, but it also provides for a thicker lawn to prevent weeds. Adding landscaping bricks around the border of your garden and flowerbeds also gives your lawn a more premium look.

Add seasonal color with the right vegetation. When choosing plants and flowers, consider what they will look like during different times of the year. For an allseason curb appeal, plant shrubs and flowers that offer colorful fall foliage or leaves with unique textures when not in full bloom. To help you get the best visual results, scout out the ideal locations around your yard before planting. Be sure to account for areas that are always in the sun or are well-shaded.

Spring and summer continue to be the most popular months for selling your home, according to Realtor.com. And with many homeowners staying in their houses for an average of 13 years, your home will surely need some sprucing up to add to its curb appeal. By following a these simple steps, you can increase your home’s value without breaking the bank. Rejuvenate the outdoor living area. Before making a trip to your local home center, make sure to wash the dirt, mildew and general grime off the outside of your house. A power washer is a great tool to help clean siding and renew the surface of decks. A good washing will also bring out the true color of a beautiful flagstone walkway or patio. Invest in the best tools for the job. One of the most useful tools in creating curb appeal is a hose. From

We’re moving.

• When we drive up to it, day after day, we want to feel great about a magical setting we’ll be privileged to enter;

Trina and I are “empty nesters.” We’re selling our initial 4928 sf Garden Atrium — and moving 500 feet to a smaller version … with pottery studio. (Over 30 years, she’s become quite an accomplished potter.)

• When we entertain. Residents talk about “the look” as new guests walk in, stop — wide-eyed — in their foyer, and see trees, birds of paradise, and an array of floral color!

I’m sad.

• And when we pay our mortgage, we want to feel our investment is contributing to the quality of our daily life.

The home and the garden in our atrium are so beautiful, it’s impossible to have a “bad day.”

LIVING IN PURE

MAGIC

By: Stuart W. Rose, Ph.D. August, 2015

Our first Garden Atrium home opened June 1st, 2002…13 years ago. Sustainable housing has grown and evolved. Sustainable living has provided us an amazing quality of life experience. However…

The seventh, and final, Garden Atrium, our next home, is nearing completion. And our current home needs people who entertain, or who have children or in-laws, or who need this space for the health, vitality, and sheer beauty it bestows. Buying a home isn’t just a huge purchase. You’re also committing part of your life to being in that home. More than anything, I’m delighted that Garden Atrium residents are truly happy to be living here.

One great lesson: We committed every cent we had to demonstrate a way to live — and live well — sustainably. The biggest reason people bought: aesthetics…beauty … of the home and of the site. (Some actually thought our Net Zero claim was a sales gimmick…until they moved in and experienced the virtual lack of utility bills.) We committed everything we had to create a community of homes that provide everything we need — heating, cooling, power, chemical-free water, better air — with what comes to the home naturally…and people bought because “it’s pretty”?

I was crushed! Then I thought: we all need to feel great about our home, because …

This weekend we’re hosting an

open house noon to four each day.

I’ve also learned new things about sustainability … First, the biggest sustainability issue isn’t power. You simply need to provide sufficient photovoltaic panels. The bigger problem is food. So … we added a solar greenhouse and now have two vegetable gardens. We produce a continual abundance of extremely healthy food. Second, sustainable living includes transportation. Garden Atrium residents have access to an photovoltaic-powered electric convertible; silent, solar-powered driving in a fun electric car for only $3/hour! Third, residents say they’ve lived elsewhere for years and not known their neighbors. Garden Atrium homes surround pedestrian walkways, a private park, a water lily covered pond, and a boat dock. While extraverts mix and mingle more than introverts, all residents say: • They know everyone to varying degrees; • They believe they’d get help from anyone, if needed; • And they’d certainly give help to any of the others.

I’d never considered “being in community” as integral to sustainable living, but it does improve quality-of-life experience.

Sample the magic first. Go to www.gardenatriumhomes. com. Then, if you’d like to personally experience this amazing home — and site — treat yourself to visit. And if you’re feeling as good as I think you’ll feel, imagine what

it would be like to have that feeling every day! You’ll see why the people who live here are so delighted they chose to be here! The real goal of sustainability: Living in Joy!

GARCIA (406-34) Living Space: 1,936 SF

Garcia Stucco and rock gives a craftsman touch to this luxurious home with generously proportioned rooms. The Garcia (406-34) has 1,936 square feet of living area and a three-car garage, which contains 881 square feet. A large set of covered windows enhances the look of the face of the garage. The inset entry to the Garcia is covered and two fulllength windows flank the door. Opening the door, guests look directly into the enormous Great Room. The vaulted living room portion of the Great Room contains a corner fireplace, large windows overlooking the back yard and solarium. The dining area is open with its matching window, viewing the backyard. The highlight of the Great Room is enlarged sliding glass door out to the rear deck. With all the glass area, the Great Room has a bountiful supply of natural light. The kitchen peninsula shares the vault of the dining area. While cabinets run overhead around the back wall, the eating bar, sink and counter space are open, ideal for family gatherings and the sharing of conversation with the cooks. The pantry forms a corner of the kitchen and is large enough to store those items needed for the family and for holidays. To the right of the entry is the master suite. An archway separates the main suite from the bath and closet areas. There are doors dividing the corner walk-in closet from the bath area. Sliding glass doors off the main suite allows access to the solarium. The Garcia is unique in that it has only two large bedrooms. The guest suite, located completely across the home from the master suite, has access to the backyard through sliding glass doors, along with a private entrance to the bathroom area. A sink next to the walk-in closet gives guests personal privacy. Rest of the home can also use the bath area with an office adjacent. It has a full wall of shelves and a large window.

through superior moisture management techniques built into the home so you can concentrate more on the things you want to do and less on taking care of your home. 4. High-efficiency heating and cooling systems to ensure lower operating costs and improved indoor air quality. 5. Independent third party EnergyStar compliance audits and on-site inspections guarantee that every VEI home meets the rigorous EnergyStar 3.0 standards. What EnergyStar means for you is a home that is good for the environment (uses less energy), good for your bank account (saves you 20-40% on heating and cooling costs) AND is good for your overall heath (sealed against moisture and dust—especially pollen—to provide superior overall indoor air quality). If you’re not ready to make your move yet, VEI Homes is well known for modifying plans on new construction to accommodate a buyer’s specific needs or requests. For example, if a buyer needs handicap accessibility in their new home, the builder can widen doorways, adjust counter heights and push out walls to increase mobility spaces. VEI Homes has an in-house designer who is available to help make your home the perfect home for you.

Sterling Springs in York County is the Perfect Place for your family. When you have children, you always want the best for them: The safest environment in which to play and grow, the healthiest conditions for their developing minds and bodies, great access to hospitals (just in case), and quality schools for a well-rounded education. It sounds like a tall order for parents to fulfill, but it’s not impossible to find all that and more in one beautiful neighborhood. In fact, it is right around the corner at Sterling Springs in York County. Sterling Springs is a neighborhood of quality homes built by VEI Homes—a locally owned, family operated business that is recognized by buyers as one of the best values in new construction when it comes to pricing, quality, flexibility and providing premium features as standards. When it comes to a safe environment, all the lots at Sterling Springs back up to common areas and some lots have the

Newport News watershed behind them, so it’s not only a beautiful location, it’s also a very calming setting. The neighborhood is built around three cul-de-sacs without any through-streets and there is a neighborhood playground, so it’s also a well-protected place for kids and families to enjoy the serene outdoors. In fact, a recent national survey released by SmartAsset, a financial technology company that tracks national real estate and financial trends, rated York County as the fifth-happiest county in the entire nation. As for access and amenities, York County has one of the lowest tax rates in Hampton Roads when it comes to property tax, service charges, sales tax, fees on special services and other taxes. In fact, Yorktown is rated as second in the area (behind Williamsburg) for livability by areavibes. com, based on low crime rates, high graduation rates, employment, sunny

weather and a stable housing market. In addition, York County is ranked 5th in the state by countyhealthrankings. org, based on factors such as quality of life, health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment. It’s no wonder than that Sterling Springs has become such an incredibly popular choice because of its convenient location close to excellent hospitals and military facilities as well as an incredible selection of shopping, dining, entertainment and educational opportunities, in addition to easy access to Newport News Park. Historic Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Patrick Henry Mall and Newport News Airport are all just minutes away, yet the neighborhood is surprisingly secluded. Good indoor air quality is also an important issue when it comes to your family’s health. All of the homes at Sterling Springs

are built to EnergyStar 3.0 specifications, which means your home is tightly sealed to ensure good air quality. Plus, you don’t have to worry about high energy costs when it comes to heating (this summer) and cooling (when winter rolls back around). With EnergyStar 3.0 construction, you’ll enjoy a number of benefits year round, based on: 1. The fact that it is a set of specifications set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure lower operating costs for heating and cooling systems that can relate to energy savings of 20-40% over normal construction. 2. Comprehensive air sealing, properly installed insulation and highperformance windows that work together to enhance overall indoor comfort. 3. Reduced home maintenance costs

If you are looking to make a move, right now is an excellent time to come see Sterling Springs and get into a home before the new school year starts. There are five models at Sterling Springs that are Move-In Ready right now and five more that are under construction so you can make your move before the heat of summer fully sets in. Then all you’ll have to do is unpack and enjoy years of comfort in your new home. So if you’re looking for a quality home in a fantastic neighborhood where you and your family can enjoy peace and quiet, and enjoy a superiorly built home in the process, come out and take a look at Sterling Springs. With eight models to choose from, you’ll be sure to find a home to accommodate your family’s needs. VEI Homes will pay up to $4,000 in buyer’s closing costs when using the builder’s approved preferred lenders—Johnson Mortgage and USAA. For all contracts written in August, you’ll also receive complimentary granite kitchen countertops. Plus, mortgage rates are still low, so now is the time to make that move you’ve always wanted to make. Come for a visit from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Friday through Monday. Or call Pat Ford of Mid-Atlantic Residential at 757.268.7229 to make an appointment to see all that Sterling Springs has to offer you and your family.

related to pears, peaches, apricots and plums. Though considered a fall fruit, apples can be enjoyed yearround thanks to commercial food production and importing.

The nutritive power of apples

Apart from being sweet, sometimes sour and refreshingly crisp, apples pack a number of nutritional benefits. Research has shown that apples can help to reduce a person’s risk of heart disease and help those with diabetes. In addition, apples can help fight cancer and prevent dental problems.

Who has not heard the old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”? It may seem unlikely that one fruit could be so effective

According to new information from longrunning studies published in the British Medical Journal, eating at least two servings a week of whole

fruit, particularly apples, blueberries or grapes, reduces a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes by around 23 percent. Apples are high in many antioxidants and, as a result, this makes them especially valuable at fighting illness. For example, the diseasefighting compounds in antioxidants have been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers by neutralizing free radicals. Apples also are very high in fiber. Fiber is needed to help a person feel full and can also regulate digestive function. Fiber also can help reduce cholesterol by preventing the buildup of cholesterol-causing plaques in the blood vessels, improving cardiovascular

function and possibly reducing risk of a stroke as a result. In addition to working their magic inside of the body, apples can have a noticeable impact on physical appearance as well. Apples are sometimes referred to as “nature’s toothbrushes” because they can brighten and clean the teeth. The crisp, abrasive texture stimulates the gums and removes debris from the teeth. What’s more, the natural mild acidity of apples helps to stimulate saliva production that can rinse away germs that lead to plaque. An apple weighs in at under 100 calories per serving, making them a low-fat and ideal snack any

time of the day. Because they are low in calories and full of fiber, apples can help men and women maintain a healthy weight. Because apples can be plagued by insects and parasites, some growers repeatedly spray the trees with pesticides. It is adviseable to buy organic apples to avoid many of the pesticide dangers and to be able to safely eat the apples raw. There are more than 7,000 varieties of apples on the market today. With such variety, availability and health benefits, apples make a convenient and nutritious snack. HM141822

Fresh air skylights and windows working together provide balanced natural light and passive ventilation contributing to energy efficiency in you home while providing decorating flare to your décor. Programmable remote control units can operate your skylights and blinds 24 hours a day. Solar powered fresh air skylights and blinds, along with installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. Get details at www.whyskylights.com.

Glass act: How

modern fenestration improves a home’s energy efficiency

Most people probably think of windows and skylights only when they’re buying or selling a house, when they get dirty, when they leak, or when the kid next door lobs a baseball through one. Yet the glass in your home is arguably among its most important features, directly impacting the structure’s overall energy efficiency and livability. Well-maintained, operational windows and skylights provide abundant natural light and passive ventilation, and models are available that maximize insulation values as well. If you’ve been overlooking the glass in your home even while you’ve been looking through it, take a moment to reflect on its condition, and whether it’s helping you save energy or costing you money.

How windows work in your favor The advantages glass brings to a home may seem obvious, but a deeper look reveals just how important it really is. Over time, homes have become much more energy efficient — which is good for the environment and your wallet — and better windows and skylights

Time to cover the windows in your bedroom? With fresh air skylights you can still have natural light and passive ventilation, along with privacy — plus gaze at the stars at bedtime. Solar powered fresh air skylights and blinds, along with installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. Get details at www.whyskylights.com. have a lot to do with that improvement. The National Fenestration Rating Council rates windows based on a number of basic criteria, including the U-factor, which measures heat loss through the glass, and solar heat gain, which indicates how much heat enters a room through the glass. Understanding how those two measures work and what they mean can help you choose the type of window that’s best for where you live. For example, if you live in a hot climate you may want to consider selecting windows that minimize solar heat gain. Many new technologies

in glass design have enhanced the efficiency of windows. For example, the insulating effect of double-pane windows gets an added boost with the addition of blinds. Electrostatic film allows homeowners to make window glass clear or opaque with the touch of a button. Another type of window coating admits natural light, but blocks out most of the infrared energy and ultraviolet rays that, along with artificial lighting and other factors, create heat and cause fading of materials inside the home. In addition to the energy efficiency of the glass itself, the quality and maintenance of the

structure surrounding the glass — the framework that makes it a window instead of just a pane of glass — also affect its efficiency. Whatever type of window you choose — vinyl, wood, fiberglass or metal - or the age of existing windows, properly sealing them helps ensure they’ll do their job as efficiently as possible. You can learn more about energy performance ratings and energy-efficient windows at www. energy.gov.

The advantages of skylights Skylights have always offered many functional and aesthetic advantages for homeowners.

They admit natural light, which can help reduce dependence on artificial light sources. Fresh air skylights can also provide passive ventilation to remove humidity, fumes and excess heat from a home — all of which improves indoor air quality. Today, high-tech, energyefficient glass in modern skylights also works hard to help your home function optimally. Manufacturers like Velux America utilize glass in their no leak solar powered fresh air skylights that stays cleaner and clearer, reduces outside noise, and protects the contents of your home — such as carpet and furnishings —

Remote-controlled, solar-powered blinds in decorator styles and colors further improve a skylight’s overall energy efficiency. And you may be eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit on solar skylights, blinds and installation cost. Visit www.veluxusa.com to learn more.
