Tips for creating a multi-purpose

home offi ce space

Brighten your home office niche with a roof window or a solar powered fresh air skylight while bringing natural light and fresh air into the workspace. Energy Star-qualified solar powered fresh air skylights from Velux America close automatically in case of rain, have three layers of water protection, and carry a 10year warranty against leaks. Operated by programmable touchpad remote control, solar skylights, blinds, and installation costs are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit to the homeowner. Get details at www.whyskylights.com.

Many Americans feel working from home would be a dream job, and more than one-third are already living that dream; 37 percent of U.S. workers telecommute, according to Gallup. However, unless you’re a full-time telecommuter or an entrepreneur running a business from your home, it may be hard to justify dedicating an entire room in your house for home office space. Today’s home offices must be able to multi-task as efficiently and effectively as the people who work in them — and that’s something you should keep in mind when making renovation plans. “We see fewer and fewer buyers requiring a dedicated home office when setting their search criteria for buying a new home,” writes Gwen Daubenmeyer, a real estate professional who recently blogged about home offices on the Integrity Real Estate Team blog. Daubenmeyer notes that laptops, cloud storage and

online filing services have made it possible to work from virtually any room in the house, so it’s no longer necessary to have a room dedicated solely as office space. Instead of turning that spare bedroom into a space strictly used for work, why not consider improvements that will help the room multi-task? With a few smart upgrades, spaces such as attics, basements, spare bedrooms and other smaller areas can serve as multi-functional spaces for work, play, working out and socializing.

Tips for multi-tasking offices ●

Good lighting is essential for any home office, but if you want to avoid the institutional look of traditional office lights, consider increasing the amount of natural light that enters your multi-purpose office

Be more productive in your home office with more natural light and silent, passive ventilation through Energy Star-qualified, solar powered fresh air skylights from Velux America. They have three layers of water protection and a 10-year warranty against leaks. Operated by programmable touchpad remote control, solar powered skylights and designer blinds, along with installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit to the homeowner. Get details at www.whyskylights.com

space. Adding Energy Star-qualified, solar-powered, fresh-air skylights, like those from Velux America, is a costeffective way to bring natural light, as well as passive ventilation, into any home office space. Solar-powered blinds in designer colors and patterns enhance the blended decor of a multiuse room, while allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room with a programmable touchpad remote control. Plus, a 30 percent federal tax credit is available to homeowners on solar-powered skylights, blinds and installation costs. Roof windows, which are very similar to skylights but are in-reach and operated by hand, are another popular option, especially in attics. For home offices without direct roof access, a Sun Tunnel tubular skylight with an optional light kit can provide light 24/7. Visit www. whyskylights.com to learn more. ●

Divide the room visually to define functional areas. You can do this in several ways, including using a folding screen to partition off the room’s work area, or hanging curtains to conceal lesser-used sections of the room when they’re not in use. You can also use the room’s layout to create a natural flow. For example, tuck a desk and shelving into an attic dormer area as office space. Many home offices need to double as a guest bedroom. If working beside an inviting bed all day makes it difficult to resist the temptation of a nap, consider alternative bed styles. A daybed can

be dressed up with pillows to serve as a sofa where you can comfortably read reports. Or, completely hide the sleeping area by adding a Murphy bed to available wall space. ●

Make it easy to rearrange furnishings in the room by putting your desk on coasters just like your office chair. Whenever you need the room to function as a workout space, home theater or social center, just roll the office furniture out of the way.

If you’re turning a bedroom into a multipurpose office, no one should need the closet for hanging clothes. Instead, convert the closet into a cozy spot for a workspace. You can place a small desk inside, or hang wide shelving that can function as a workspace for your laptop, printer and files. When you’re not working, simply close the closet doors! Whenever a room has to serve more than one purpose, organization is critical. If you don’t have the space for filing cabinets, or simply don’t like the way they look, bookcases and shelving can be a great alternative. Don’t overlook the possibilities presented by extra wall space; you can layer shelves to maximize storage space above your desk/work area.

YUKON (409-16) LIVING SPACE: 946 SF (each)

Duplexes, triplexes, and quads are very popular to build. The Yukon (409-16) has been designed to be a duplex, quad, or even multiple housing units. This is a beautiful two-story unit with the garages in the center. The plumbing is racked and stacked to conserve money in construction and provide convenience to the occupants. The units have a classy and distinctive look that will compliment your neighborhood.

Yukon

The units have 946 square feet total, 539 square feet downstairs and 407 square feet upstairs. Entry into the units brings you into the living room with a beautiful open railing set of stairs leading up. The coat closet and forced air unit is under the stairs. The living and dining areas are open. Each unit has a window seat in the living room with bay windows. The dining room has sliding doors that open onto a patio in the back yard. The walk-through kitchen leads to the utility room with a washer/dryer area and a deep sink with a water closet located behind a pocket door. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms. Bedroom 1 being the larger of the two has a built-in desk, and a large wall closet. Bedroom 2 is ideal for a young child. The bathroom for the upstairs is located next to bedroom 2 and has a tub and a single sink. There is a linen closet in the bath area, ideal for both bedrooms and the bath. Each unit is identical, only some are in reverse layout. By staggering the units, you present a more individual style and a much more pleasing quality. With the need for economical housing for younger people today, quads are quite popular. The Yukon is simple, easy to build, and shows quality in its design.

How to clean your grill during

summer party season Source: Metro Creative Content

Grilling season has arrived, and amateur grillmasters everywhere are gearing up for another summer of backyard barbecues and family dinners outside under the summer sun. But once you fire up that grill and cook your first hot dog of the season, your work is not quite done. Cleaning the grill after you have eaten makes it easier to prolong the life of your grill and ensure the foods you eat are safe to consume. ■ Turn the grill off. Unless you own a charcoal grill, chances are your grill has dials that govern how hot the grill gets when cooking. Make sure these dials are turned to the off position before you start cleaning. If your’s is a gas grill, disconnect the gas while wearing

gloves to reduce your risk of accident or injury. ■ Use the residual heat to make cleaning easier. The sooner you start cleaning the grill after you cook, the easier it might be to make the cooking surfaces sparkle. That’s because the residual heat can make it easier to remove any leftover buildup from barbecue sauce or seasoning that stuck to the grill after you removed your food. ■ Use a wire brush to clean the cooking grates. Wire brushes are ideal for cleaning cooking grates. Such brushes can quickly remove grease and food particles, saving grill owners the trouble of scrubbing away with traditional sponges.

Once the wire brush’s work is done, you can then clean the grill with a soapy sponge. ■ Remove food that fell into the well. Food inevitably falls into the well of a grill no matter how skilled a grillmaster might be. If left to fester in the well, such foods can pose a safety risk and promote the growth of bacteria. ■ Clean the remaining areas of the grill. Marinade, sauce or condiments may find their way onto areas of your grill, and if left unattended, such substances can make a grill very dirty over time. Remove these substances after each barbecue to keep your grill looking new through the summer. EL156278

The saying, “The more things change, the more they stay the same” rings true with architectural styles. We have smarter ways of building and the layouts have evolved with lifestyle changes, but historical and authentic design is only growing in demand. “Post-war in the mid to late 20th century, many homes began losing that historical European influence due to the need for mass produced, affordable housing,” says Deryl Patterson, an award-winning residential architect, and president and founder of Housing Design Matters, Inc. “Fast forward 30 years, and homebuyers began demanding those historical styles again -— with the convenience and functionality of a new home.” “One of the features often overlooked when designing a ‘new old house’ is the window style,” says Mark Montgomery, vice president of marketing for Ply Gem Windows. “Instinctively, people realize the curb appeal of a home is not quite right when the windows do not fit the architectural style, but they can’t point out what’s wrong. Windows are so much more than white rectangles and can really make or break the home’s design.” For homebuyers who want an authentic older home look, the exterior must be designed in a specific manner, down to every little detail, especially the window architecture. Montgomery advises buyers to consider the color, grilles (decorative pattern that can simulate the look of separated glass panes),

new house

To get the look, here are four examples of how history influenced window architecture in home design:

1. French Country: This is a very elegant style, focusing on vertical proportions. Windows are a defining characteristic that should emphasize this. A 3-foot by 6-foot window with a two-over-two window grille pattern is a classic combination. The single vertical mullion (a post that separates two windows) in the window further reinforces its striking proportions.

2. Modern Tuscan: Windows play a vital role in the design. Imagine them as geometric forms, creating interesting patterns across the front of the home. Consider

combinations of single hung and fixed glass windows. The windows should be relatively free of grilles — perhaps a simple single vertical or cross pattern — to keep the style fresh. If the budget allows, consider upgrading to a Ply Gem MIRA Series window and using one of the bold, saturated tones, available in nearly 50 different colors.

3. Craftsman Bungalow:

Prairie architecture are typically tall casements in warm tones, providing the perfect complement and contrast to the horizontal lines of the style. A Prairie-style grille pattern is essential to complete the look. To find the window style that best fits your “new old house,” Patterson recommends researching the options.

Windows are one of the most critical aspects of sophisticated French Country-style architecture. This home features a simple, vertical window grille pattern that elongates the design, with arch and oval shapes influencing the authenticity.

“One of the best ways to find inspiration is to drive through older, historical neighborhoods. If you don’t live close to such neighborhoods, old travel magazines and history books are also great resources,” she says.

Websites like www.plygem.com also help provide inspiration and take the guesswork out of architectural styling and color selection through historically accurate visual renderings, window design specifications and suggested style and grille patterns.

This style was developed from the British Arts and Crafts movement and features double-hung or casement windows. In Craftsman-style homes, the exterior trim traditionally contrasts with the window frame color, and the windows include grille patterns that create vertical proportions.

4. Prairie: A bold departure from the typical European-influenced styles, windows in modern Source: Brandpoint

Blackened Beef with Thai Chile Noodles and Baby Bok Choy

Serves 4

Thai Chile Noodles 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon chile oil (available at Asian markets), optional 1/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint leaves 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves 1 small chile pepper of your choice, seeded and minced 1 garlic clove, minced 8 ounces rice noodles or linguine, cooked according to package directions 1/4 cup chopped, roasted peanuts

Bok Choy and Steak 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 8 whole baby bok choy or 2 large heads bok choy, cut into quarters 1 12-ounce steak, 11/2-inch-thick boneless top sirloin steak 2 tablespoons Red Hot Blackened Seasoning (see below) Fine kosher or sea salt to taste To make the noodles, combine the olive oil, chile oil, vinegar, herbs, chile, and garlic in a large bowl. Toss the cooked noodles with the dressing. Sprinkle on the peanuts and toss again. Set aside. Prepare a hot fire in your grill.

Less traditional

grilled foods still delicious

While cabbage might not be the first food people think of when they think of grilling, that does not mean cabbage and the foods that fall under the cabbage umbrella cannot be grilled. Bok choy is part of the cabbage family and tastes excellent when grilled. If

grilled bok choy appeals to your taste buds, consider firing up the grill and preparing the following recipe for “Blackened Beef with Thai Chile Noodles and Baby Bok Choy” from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener & The Grill” (Running Press).

Combine the sesame and vegetable oils in a small bowl. Brush the bok choy with this mixture, then the steak. Sprinkle the Blackened Seasoning on the beef. Grill the steak for 31/2 to 4 minutes per side for medium-rare (130 F), or 5 minutes per side for medium (140 F). Grill the bok choy for 2 to 3 minutes per side, turning once, or until you have good grill marks and the vegetables have begun to soften. Slice the steak thinly. Place a serving of noodles in 4 bowls and top with the steak and bok choy. Serve immediately.

Red Hot Blackened Seasoning Makes about 11/4 cups 1/2 cup paprika 3 tablespoons garlic salt 2 tablespoons granulated onion 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon dried basil 11/2 teaspoons dried thyme 11/2 tablespoons black pepper 11/2 tablespoons white pepper 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper Combine all of the ingredients in a glass jar and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Shake to blend. This keeps for several months in the pantry. PC167217
