Modifications to make bathrooms safer
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says every year around 235,000 people over the age of 15 visit emergency rooms in the United States because of injuries suffered in bathrooms.
This bathroom can be made safer with the addition of grab bars, a bath seat, non-slip flooring, and a transfer bench. Few areas in a home can prove as perilous as bathrooms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says every year around 235,000 people over the age of 15 visit emergency rooms in the United States because of injuries suffered in bathrooms. The majority of these injuries — many of which require hospitalization — result from falls.
Injuries sustained in bathrooms typically occur in and around bathtubs, usually when a person is getting in or out of the tub. Falls occur when people slip on wet surfaces or get dizzy and lose consciousness within the tight confines of the bathroom. Although bathroom injuries are mostly associated with the elderly, anyone is susceptible to such injuries. Debilitating
diseases, instability from an accident or injury or even impaired vision can trigger a bathroom accident. Thankfully, some minor modifications can make bathrooms safer for everyone.
This bathroom can be made safer with the addition of grab bars, a bath seat, non-slip flooring, and a transfer bench.
Grab bars Unsteady individuals may rely on towel bars or shower knobs to provide some balance when maneuvering around bathrooms. But such items were not designed to support a person’s weight and can be slippery, making grab bars the safer choice. Continues on page 9

Low-E windows Windows can be a significant source of heat transfer in a home, allowing heat to enter rooms in the summer and escape in winter. Low-emissive (LowE) windows hinder heat transfer while still allowing daylight to pass through. Not only can Low-E windows help A/C units operate more efficiently, they can also prevent fading of fabrics, floor coverings and furniture from sunlight entering a home.

Top energy-efficient
housing features every new homebuyer should know Sponsored Ad Content by Clayton Homes Most Americans want an energy-efficient home, and they’re willing to make the necessary changes to help improve efficiency, whether it’s changing their habits or buying more energyefficient appliances. But
reducing energy bills and making your home more efficient doesn’t just begin with remembering to switch off lights in empty rooms or paying top-dollar for newer appliances. “Energy efficiency
has to start when a home is being built,” says Kevin Clayton, CEO of manufactured home builder Clayton Homes. “If you’re buying new construction, it’s important to look for a home that’s built with
energy-efficiency in mind during the home design stage. Those additional features will have a great impact on a home’s overall efficiency.” As demand for greater energy efficiency has grown, the concept of more resourceful design has moved from the realm of luxury homes into the mainstream, Clayton notes. “You no longer have to buy a mansion to get an energy-smart, sustainable home. Manufactured homes are very energy-efficient and it’s easier to add energy saving features when the home is being constructed in a climate controlled environment.”
If you’re in the market for a new home, here are energy-efficient design features to look for:
Superior insulation Insulation doesn’t just keep a home warm in the winter. It should also help keep it cooler in the summer, and help central air-conditioning units operate more efficiently. The R-Value of insulation tells you how well it will be able to resist heat transfer, and a higher RValue means better heat resistance. To properly protect a home, builders may use a combination of insulation types, such as batt and blown insulations packed
Air leaks can increase heating and cooling costs for a typical existing home in the United States by an average of 15 percent, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. A newly constructed home with properly sealed ductwork inside and tight airway leading outside can help reduce your energy bills. Minimizing air leaks begins with tight construction in which all the joints where walls, floors and roofs come together are properly sealed. Weather stripping around doors and windows reduces air flow and prevents dust from entering. Inside, duct work should be properly sealed to prevent air leaks and condensation, and tested to ensure no leaks occur.

Due to technical difficulties beyond our control, the cities of Hampton and Newport News and Poqoson are not listed above. Continued from page 4… Modifications to make bathrooms safer
Look for bars with slip-resistant surfaces instead of chrome plating. Bolted-in bars that are fixed to the studs in a wall, provide more reliable support than bars that employ suction to stay connected to the wall. Install the bars where they provide optimal leverage and stability, such as close to the shower and on each side of the toilet.
Chairs A bath/shower chair can make bathing safer. Pharmacies and medical supply retailers carry these sturdy, plastic chairs and stools which can fit inside of a shower or tub. They enable a person to rest his or her legs and sit while bathing. When remodeling a bathroom, have a seating area built into the design of the shower enclosure so that the addition looks seamless.
Transfer bench Many injuries occur when people are attempting to get in and out of the tub or shower, but a transfer bench can greatly reduce the risk of such injuries. The bench is placed outside of the tub, and users just sit on the bench
and then swing their legs over the ledge of the tub rather than stepping over while standing.
made from recycled tires is one option that is gaining ground for its practicality and sustainability.
Walk-in showers
Changes around the bathroom can alleviate many of the risks that contribute to the hundreds of thousands of injuries that occur in bathrooms every year. SH162864
Some homeowners are eliminating tubs from their homes altogether. A walk-in shower provides a barrier-free entry into the shower, making it safer for those who have difficulty stepping into and out of bathtubs.
Lever-style fixtures
A walk-in shower provides a barrier-free entry into the shower.
Knob temperature controls on faucets can be challenging to grasp for people with arthritis or poor grips. Lever-style fixtures are easier to maneuver and can help prevent scalding. These levers also are easier for children to manage. The National Kitchen and Bath Builders Association recommends installing pressure-balanced and temperature-controlled valves in the bath and shower.
Forgiving flooring Tile may be preferred around the bathroom, but it can be cold and slippery. Investigate other waterresistant flooring materials that may be softer underfoot and offer greater traction. Rubber flooring
A bath/shower chair can make bathing safer.

SHEBA (407-15) LIVING SPACE: 2,703 SF (each
The Sheba (407-15) has the look of a traditional two-story ranch home from the outside. However, inside this gracious home are many extras the settlers would not have had available. The first floor has 1,756 square feet with extras like an entertainment center, a large walk-in pantry, skylights, and large rooms. The upstairs has 947 square feet of bedroom space with an optional attic area of 799 square feet. The wrap-around porch provides a covered entry into the home.
Sheba
The large living room is on the left with a fireplace on the outside wall. Beyond this room is the dining area, with the kitchen in the corner. A garden window over the sink provides a place to grow herbs and flowers, while an appliance center occupies the corner. The nook faces the rear deck and is brightened by two skylights. A door opens to the deck from this room. Off the nook is the family room with a built-in entertainment center. In the center area of all these rooms is a coat closet, a half bath, the laundry chute from upstairs, and a walk-in pantry with the washer and dryer included behind pocket doors. Under the stairs to the second floor is a large storage closet. The second floor has two bedrooms, with a shared bath, along with a complete guest suite. The guest suite has a full bath with tub and his and hers sinks, a walk-in closet, and a large open suite area. Bedrooms 2 and 3 are nearly identical to each other than the sizes of the wall closets. The shared bathroom has dual sinks, separate from the tub and stool. Off bedroom 3 is an optional attic area that is very long and narrow. It extends over the garage area and could be used for a study room, playroom, or for storage. The garage below is designed for three cars, with a large shop and built-in workbench.
