HENRY (406-63) Living Space: 1,280 SF

Henry Vaulted ceilings abound in the Henry (406-63), increasing the open, airy feeling of an already spacious plan. A small covered porch provides the entry to this home. One novel feature is the large vaulted living room. The large paned window provides a full view of the front area, and bathes the living room and entry area in soft natural light. A fireplace with a wide tile hearth sets on the wall of the living room. It is centrally located, and can be enjoyed from not only the living room, but also the dining room and the kitchen. The kitchen is large enough to handle the kids and all their friends for a pizza party, or the holiday family gathering. There is a large pantry cabinet and an eating bar for those Sunday morning brunches. Other kitchen amenities include a dishwasher and a large double sink. The dining area is also vaulted. Outside the sliding doors, one can walk on the deck, have barbeques, or just lay in the sun. In the master suite, in an attempt to save space, wall closets the full length of the room were used. The master bath has two vanities, a linen closet, and a tub. The master bedroom is also one of the rooms that are vaulted for that open airy look. The other two bedrooms are located on the opposite side of this particular design along with another bathroom with a tub. The utility room is also in this area and contains the washer and dryer. It has a linen closet that is convenient for putting towels and sheets away once they are dried. If you walk through the utility room, there is a door that goes into the two-car garage. The garage is large enough to house a freezer, water heater, and most important, the forced air unit. With all the features this home contains, it would make a great starter home for the newly married couple or for the couple with a small family, or for the grandparents that do not need all the room as when the family was at home.

This plan courtesy of Landmark Designs Inc. www.ldiplans.com HOW TO ORDER Study Kit: Send $25 to Landmark Designs Inc., P.O. Box 5625, Eugene, OR 97405. Include the plan number (406-63) and that you saw it in the Daily Press.

(This post is brought to you by the makers of Advil®.) It’s that time of year again: project season. It’s time to open the windows, reimagine your space and get to work on the home improvement project you’ve been dreaming about all winter. This is an exciting time of year but before you jump in with booted feet and work-gloved hands, you need to do a little planning. “I’ve found the best results are achieved when you have a plan in mind,” says Carter Oosterhouse, one of America’s most recognized homeimprovement experts featured on many popular TV shows on HGTV. “There’s certainly a time for spontaneity, but you should have a vision of your finished

work and know where you’re going before you pick up that first tool.” This summer, Carter is partnering with the makers of Advil® to offer these preparation tips and ensure the project you’ve been dreaming about is set up for success.

Know when to rent and when to buy No matter what type of DIY project you’re planning, you’re going to need some tools. It doesn’t mean you need to own all of them. Smaller tools, such as screwdrivers or hammers, are worth buying because you’ll use them in the future. However, if you need larger tools like floor sanders, carpet cleaners and big power tools, you’re probably better off renting

“I’ve found the best results are achieved when you have a plan in mind,” says Carter Oosterhouse, one of America’s most recognized home-improvement experts featured on many popular TV shows on HGTV. “There’s certainly a time for spontaneity, but you should have a vision of your finished work and know where you’re going before you pick up that first tool.” those instead. Before you make any big purchase, ask yourself if you’ll ever use it again. If the answer is no rent it from your local home improvement store. You’ll save the money and space.

consider Advil®. Advil® offers fast, long-lasting relief for several types of pain, including the muscle aches, backaches and joint pain common with DIY projects.

Don’t ignore your pain

Have the right tools on hand

DIY projects can be hard work especially if they involve the repetitive use of muscles you may not commonly use. With these types of projects, soreness and pain are common during the work and afterwards. Don’t ignore the pain or allow it to affect your productivity,

Some tools have a place in just about every project, so it’s a good idea to keep a collection of these often-used tools nearby. Your go-to tool collection should include a hammer, tape measure, drill, saw, sander, glue, level, and an assortment of screwdrivers. You won’t

use all of these tools on every project but it’s a safe bet you can find a use for a few of them on any project.

• Keep your work area well-lit and clean. The better you can see, the better you can avoid accidents, slips and falls.

Safety first

• When using sharp objects, cut away from your body and never leave power tools unattended.

Your beautiful project won’t be worth your efforts if you get injured in the process. To keep yourself and your project partners healthy, remember these common DIY project safety practices when you tackle any DIY goal: • Always wear safety glasses and a mask when appropriate. • Situate ladders on level ground, avoid stepping on the top two rungs, and always use a spotter for taller climbs. • If you’re working on an electrical project make sure your environment is water and moisture free. You should also wear rubber-soled shoes for safety.

• Always keep a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher nearby. No one likes to think the worst but it’s good to know you’re ready if it happens. Completing a DIY project can be a rewarding experience that improves your home for years to come. So grab your tool belt and start planning, because making your dream projects a reality depends on you. Visit Advil.com for more information on how Advil® can help keep the pain out of DIY

If you are renovating any area of your home, it may be time to try something new-such as bringing tile into main living areas in addition to your bathrooms and kitchen. New designs, styles and technologies are making tile the most versatile and accessible flooring material. “Tile has always been durable and easy to maintain,” says Kevin McDaniel, director of product development and design services for The Tile Shop, which sells tile and natural stone at more than 100 retail showrooms across the country, from Arizona to New York.

A light palette of cool grey tones gives this rustic faux wood floor a breezy appearance. Faux wood ceramic tiles like this Cottage Grey one come in natural, painted hand-scraped and rustic finishes, which mirror the look of real hardwood down to the finest detail, including integrating nail heads into the design. “Tile has a long life span and classic good looks, making it a favorite flooring of choice wherever homeowners need a floor material that’s both practical and

beautiful. Even more design options are available now, making tile a smart floor surface in virtually any room of the home.” Homeowners, builders, designers and product developers are thinking outside the box when incorporating tile into renovations and new builds. From bringing tile flooring up the wall, to using the same tile flooring across multiple rooms, to using water jet technology, they’re working with tile in non-traditional ways. Here are some top tile trends to consider for your interior design project:

1.

The look of real wood with a rustic

finish. Many of the largerformat faux wood tiles mimic the look of real hardwood floors. Less expensive and more durable than real wood, these tile floors are practical yet beautiful choices for active households with children and pets. Details evoke the character of real wood, right down to the nails. “Rustic faux wood is making a huge splash because of its warm, earthy coloring and unusual time-worn finishes such as aged paint, a finish hard to achieve with real wood. I foresee it

2.

Those longer tile planks. While

standard square tile sizes will always have their place in home décor, rectangular tiles — otherwise known as planks — are gaining popularity. New 12-by-24-inch tiles are a hot choice in bathrooms and 6-by-36-inch tiles or 8-inch by 8-feet planks (often in wood-grained looks) are a favorite for living areas. “Using longer planks can help smaller spaces look larger, and create an appealing consistency across multiple rooms,” says McDaniel. “While consumers may be familiar with traditional tile shapes such as square or hexagon, these longer tiles offer exciting new design flexibility.”

3.

That poured concrete look.

4.

The warmth of heated floors.

While concrete is a trendy design material right now, it’s not practical for every household or application. New tile styles create the look of poured or stained concrete at a fraction of the cost, and with all the durability, versatility and ease associated with tile. Tile options range from long rectangular 8-by-18-inch or 12-by-24-inch planks to 18-by-18inch squares. Tiles are rectified —the edge is cut completely straight — and grout joints are very narrow to further create the look of seamless concrete.

Faux wood tile is a beautiful surface choice for any living space, from the kitchen to the laundry room to the bathroom. Shown here is the Fronda Perla, which offers a pewter grey backdrop for charcoal grain, similar to a plank of plain sliced wood. It pairs nicely with the Hampton Large Herringbone marble shower floor.

While heated floors were once a luxury option for homeowners, they’re becoming increasingly mainstream. Tile lends itself to radiant heat beneath the floor. The Tile Shop carries a full line of accessories, including thermostats,

which can control the heat in any floor in your home. This includes both the shower floor and shower benches.

5.

Unconventional grout and tile design ideas.

Using a high-contrast grout color can make the floor pop, and it’s a tactic that works well with mosaic designs. Choosing the right grout color is just as important as the tile you select. Also popular is the concept of mosaic designs that mimic an area rug within a larger section of tile flooring and create the look of custom art within the floor. Shopping for tile designs and inspiration is easy when you visit one of The Tile Shop’s local showrooms or visit www.tileshop.com.

gets on a daily basis and the spot’s proximity to a water supply. If planting flowers, try to avoid planting in areas with heavy foot traffic so the flowers are less likely to be stomped. If you’re planting flowers to accent walkways, then consider erecting a barrier around the flower bed to safeguard the flowers from foot traffic.

❦ Get started before you plant. Preparing the soil a few weeks before you start planting can help the plants thrive down the road. Add some organic material, such as compost or fertilizer, to the soil roughly three weeks before planting. This helps the soil retain water and nutrients, which will help your garden thrive.

❦ Time your planting. When you plant is sometimes as important as what you plant. Some climates allow for year-round planting, but many do not. When buying seeds, the packaging might suggest what time of year to plant the seeds. Adhere to these suggestions or your garden might not grow much at all. In addition, keep

Gardening is a rewarding hobby that many enthusiasts credit with helping them to peacefully escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Though gardening can be both relaxing and rewarding, it’s not as easy as it may seem, and the more time and effort a person devotes to his or her garden the more likely it is to be successful. Gardening can be a little daunting for beginners who have little or no experience planting flowers or vegetables. But gardening need not be so intimidating, especially for those beginners who adhere to the following tips aimed at helping novice gardeners start their gardens off on the right foot.

❦ Determine what you should plant. Where you live will go a long way toward determining what you should plant. While you can plant

anything you can get your hands on, the United States Department of Agriculture as well as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada have determined specific plant hardiness zones that indicate which plants are most likely to thrive in given locations. Maps of these zones can be found at www. usda.gov and www.agr.gc.ca. By adhering to the maps, gardeners can significantly increase their chances of growing successful gardens. When in doubt about what to plant, consult a local gardening center or seek advice from a professional landscaper.

❦ Think location when beginning your garden. Beginners with large yards have the luxury of choosing the right location on their properties to start planting. When choosing a spot, consider how much sunlight a location

in mind that many seedlings need significant light throughout the day in order to grow, so choose a time of year with ample daylight.

❦ Don’t forget to mulch. Mulch can be as aesthetically appealing as it is effective. Mulch retains soil, helping roots to grow stronger, while deterring bugs and preventing weed growth. And many gardeners find mulch adds visual appeal their garden, and does so in a very inexpensive way.

❦ Clean your tools. Beginners rarely recognize the importance of cleaning gardening tools before putting them away. At the end of each gardening session, clean your tools thoroughly, as soil left on your garden tools can play host to potentially harmful microbes that might kill your plants. Gardening can be a labor-intensive yet gratifying hobby. By sticking to a few simple rules, beginners can develop a thriving garden to reward all of that hard work.
