Most of us are familiar with the PBS show “This Old House” where they take an old house and after many months and what many times seems like an endless budget a “New” old house is arrived upon. So now it’s my turn to try and work some magic on an old house. I recently purchased a waterfront home here on the peninsula. The last time it was remodeled was many years ago. The home was built in 1954 and she is sure showing her age. Luckily for me the systems of the home appeared to be in fairly good condition. The roof only had a few leaks and the windows had been replaced about 5 years or so ago. I wasn’t sure exactly the layout that I wanted, thus I wasn’t sure how to go about accomplishing that. Everything seemed to be a problem from the beginning. I am a bit of a “do it yourself” type of person. I like to be hands on with most of my home ﬁx up projects but I also knew that this job was way bigger than anything I have ever attempted before, subsequently, I knew my limitations. Also, I am a realtor and was busy selling homes and certainly did not have the time required to

coordinate all the activities. Selling a home and coordinating all the activities necessary for a successful closing is something I have been doing for many years and I’m comfortable with. I also know that I’m not comfortable with having to coordinate all the activities of remodeling an expensive waterfront home. I know many sub-contractors, and I could have probably pieced the project together, however one wrong move or mistake made can potentially cost me a lot of lost time and money. So after considerable thought and speaking to many contractors I ﬁnally settled on one. After picking a trusted contractor I next needed to ﬁgure out the layout that I would like. It is a waterfront home and naturally I would like to take advantage of the water views. I have sold many waterfront homes in the area and some of them have really stood out in my mind. It is sort of like watching the show “Homes of the Rich and Famous.” I wanted my home to be open, airy and inviting. Of the nearly 2000 homes I’ve sold here in the area, nearly all of those homes had a formal dining room and the majority of those use their dining

room perhaps 2 or 3 times a year. So I had to ﬁgure out what to do with my new formal dining room that I would probably never use. Other rooms that I needed to deal with involved a small master bath, a half bath/laundry room and what would I do with the area that “was” the kitchen. I now have plan and someone to help me put it all together. But before a contractor can start the transformation, the existing issues need to be corrected. It’s interesting the things one will ﬁnd when doing this demolition. The sheet rock was taken off of a wall and we found a door framed in. Currently, there is a half bath where this framed in door lead, but obviously this door at one time did not lead to the half bath (toilet is in the way,) but probably lead to some type of front porch. I had no idea that at one point in the houses history that it had a front porch. The same thing happened in a different room, we discovered a framed in window behind the sheetrock. I’m wondering what other secrets the home holds. Needless to say, I am not tearing off all the sheetrock in the search of the history of the home, but I am left wondering what they would say, if only these walls could talk…
