Now is the time to take a few precautionary steps toward the utmost security of your home and family in the event of extreme weather occurrences, say officials observing climate change. You may be doing so already, but recent survey findings show that most Americans are worried about the ability to cope with damage caused by severe wind, fire, and flooding. Safety is the main preoccupation, but so are the costs associated with destruction and loss. “One answer that solves many issues is to opt for the strongest impact-resilient house available,” says Keven Rector at Nudura, a leading name in building with insulated concrete forms. “This ICF method is an advanced departure from traditional

wood framing — and our design is recognized to be even more efficient. At the construction site, these compact concrete forms interlock (like Lego) to build a rock solid envelope from 4 to 12 inches thick.” And, says Rector, this construction innovation gives homeowners far more for their investment, such as: Walls to weather any storm If high winds and fire are a concern, data shows that an ICF home delivers hurricane and tornado impact-resistance up 250 miles per hour — and the fire protection rating is up to four hours. Energy bills with a smile Concrete walls vastly reduce

Weather

every storm with

Concrete walls

air infiltration as compared to wood walls, and that is the key to lower energy consumption. This saving is even more pronounced, says Rector, if builders use the most advanced ICFs available. The Nudura design, for instance, combines two panels of thick (EPS) foam with the structural strength and thermal mass of concrete. The resulting envelope produces an energy efficiency rating as high as R-50 (compared to an average R-20 in wood structures) saving you up to 50 percent on your utility bills. Temperature consistency The outside cold air easily travels through wood-framed walls, causing thermal bridging that produces drafts and chilly spots inside your home. Walls with a solid

concrete core prevent thermal bridging so even temperatures result throughout the house. Better, breathable air Mold, mildew, and toxins associated with wood structures are also diminished. Shut out the noise Solid concrete is an effective sound barrier. It dampens sound vibrations from outside noise such as traffic, trains and neighborhood parties. This internal peace and quiet is a welcomed bonus. Rock solid asset It is generally expected that a stronger, safer, storm resistant, greener home - and one that is cost efficient with less maintenance and repair - will steadily increase in resale value. Dave Ress Political I Investigative Reporter Whether it’s state or regional coverage, my work is to dig beneath the surface of issues that matter and explain them to my community.

2015-16 First Amendment Award, Virginia Coalition for Open Government and Associated Press Media Editors Award for reporting on — among many other subjects — unequal treatment of black and white defendants in the state’s courts.

WHEN YOU DO WHAT YOU LOVE, IT SHOWS.

Years back, I was sitting with an elderly couple in their tiny house in a patch of woods in James City County. Even though their home had no indoor plumbing, they were proud to own it free and clear. Until a high-pressure salesman talked them into costly new windows — and a high-interest rate home equity loan. I looked over their paperwork and explained that they had pledged their home to secure that loan. They hadn’t understood the jeopardy. Their story, and plenty of others like theirs from the Peninsula, led Virginia to have for a time some of the most effective consumer loan regulations in the South. When people say “that’s something we need to fix” after reading one of my stories I’m reminded that I truly love my job.

damage in a

home Plumbing problems may ultimately result in costly water damage. Homes are potentially susceptible to a host of problems. While unforeseen problems can prove costly, homeowners who keep attentive eyes on their homes can oftentimes discover small problems before they escalate. Water damage is a potentially costly problem that can afflict any home. Old homes tend to be most susceptible to water damage, and that damage can manifest itself in various ways. The following are some telltale signs of water damage that should give prospective home buyers pause and compel current homeowners to seek professional assistance as soon as possible. STAINS Many prospective home buyers have been disappointed by the sight of water stains during an open house or home

inspection. Water stains tend to be on ceilings and/or walls. Stains on ceilings tend to be round, while wall stains are straight lines down the wall that may or may not have forced paint to peel. Water stains are not necessarily indicative of a major problem, but homeowners should have the stains examined by a professional while potential buyers should direct their home inspector’s attention to the stains. DETERIORATING WOOD Wood around windows or doors that is deteriorating may indicate water problems. The wood might be deteriorating because water is infiltrating the wood during storms. Baseboards and molding that is dilapidated or beginning to deteriorate may also indicate water damage. BUCKLED DRYWALL OR WOOD Drywall or wood that is

ODOR Sometimes water damage is best detected by the smell test. Homeowners who notice the smell of mold or mildew in rooms that previously never emanated such odors might have homes that are in the early stages of water problems. The water damage might be behind the walls, where mold is beginning to form thanks to water damage. Older homes tend to be musty, but call in a professional if you notice that mustiness if more pungent than usual. Water damage is a potentially costly problem, especially if it goes unnoticed for months or even years. Homeowners and prospective home buyers

Plumbing problems may ultimately result in costly water damage. should be on the lookout for signs of water damage before problems escalate and require expensive repairs. FH168302

buckled or beginning to buckle is another potential indicator of water damage. Drywall buckles when it gets wet, and that is often a sign that there is a leak behind the drywall. Severely buckled drywall will feel as if it has ridges. Wood also buckles when it is exposed to excess moisture, and this can usually be felt when walking on the wood barefoot or in socks.

DONALD 1 (403-34) LIVING SPACE: 1,358 SF

Parents can cook dinner and still keep an eye on kids playing in the front yard in the Donald 1 (403-34). Multi-paned windows wrap around three sides of the unique half-octagon kitchen bay, offering a panoramic view of the neighborhood. On the exterior, the kitchen’s octagonal protrusion creates one of several interesting roofline variations, which gives the home a Tudor look. Truncated gables and rough-sawn board trim on the stucco exterior add to the Tudor styling.

Donald 1

The kitchen is large with plenty of counter space and cabinet space. Located just inside the front door, handy for popping in to grab a snack, the kitchen also provides an open walkway to the dining area. An eating bar separates the kitchen area and the dining room, but the core of the plan is open, front to back. Less formal families might prefer combining the dining and living rooms into one big family room. The living room has a large window overlooking the back yard as well as a set of sliding doors opening onto the patio. With the short distance to the kitchen, this makes a great spot for having friends over for barbecues or family gatherings. The Donald 1 has a large master bedroom with double vanity sinks in the dressing room between the bathroom and walk-in closet. Pocket doors separate the bathing area and the walk-in closet from the rest of the suite. The main suite area because of its size is ideal for a large bed and extra dressers. Two additional bedrooms beyond the master suite share a linen closet and a full bath, which is located across the hall. Each bedroom has wall closets and large windows supplying excellent light for playing or studying. An opportunity space in the walk-through utility room can be used for sewing, hobbies, exercise machines or extra storage. There would room for the freezer or a built-in pantry if needed. A door opens into the garage as well as one opening on the side to the yard. There is also extra room for storage at the rear of this large two-car area.
