The efficiency of most air-source heat pumps, when temperatures are dramatically low, generally make heat pumps unsuitable for cold nights and days, he said. This is where the dual-fuel system plays an important role because the Bioheat® system will operate making the home warmer than a regular heat pump could, Allen said. “It kicks on when it is needed most, when it cold outside. But when it is not so cold the heat pump handles warming the house. This saves money for the homeowner,” he said.

The system has an engine that allows for operation of two different types of fuels.

“Homeowners are able to save money when the weather is mild and at the same time, when the weather gets cold, the system will switch Bioheat® fuel which is technologically advanced,” said Donald B. Allen Jr., president of E.T. Lawson, a nearly 100-yearold heating, ventilation and air conditioning company in Hampton.

Bioheat® is considered the fuel of the future, Allen said. Produced in the United States, Bioheat® is 2 percent ASTM-spec soybean oil and 98 percent ultra low sulfur diesel fuel which reduces the effects of global warming. With a dual-fuel system, the expense of Bioheat® is reduced when the weather is not severe by using the heat pump system.

A heat pump system works well in a climate such as Hampton Roads because generally the area has moderate heating and cooling needs. Heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners. Similar to a refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into a warm house, Allen said. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide equivalent heating and cooling needs at a cost that is about one-quarter of a

During warmer times of the year, high-efficiency heat pumps reduce humidity better than standard central air conditioners, which means less energy usage and more cooling comfort in summer months. Allen said his company uses Thermo Pride and Maytag 14 SEER Heat Pump for the dual-fuel systems. The system does not require a chimney and uses no space inside in the home, he said. “It also does not make a burner or combustion noise inside the home.
