Plitt A combination of brick and wood with accents of large windows has been used to compliment the exterior of the Plitt (407-63). The covered porch has posts set in brick and railings between adding classic lines to this great home. The two-car garage is on the left side and faces away from the front of the home. The vaulted entry is filled with light from skylights. The formal vaulted dining area, decorated by plant shelves over high walls and a bay window is on the right. To the left is a studio with a hidden sink, TV/ VCR, storage for tapes and extra shelves, ideal for an artist or crafter. A bay window and an overhead fan add character to this creative room. Outside the studio are two closets and a half bath. The family room has a pellet stove in the front corner with a fan overhead for circulation of the heat. There are three large windows across the back overlooking the backyard. A door opens onto a screened porch on the right and one opens onto the deck to the left. The room is large and ideal for family gatherings. It also is open to the kitchen area. The nook has two large windows giving it the feel of warmth. The kitchen is a unique shape and loaded
with many extras. It has double sinks with a huge garden window, a trash compactor, and a raised dishwasher on the rear wall. There is island with a vegetable sink and counter space in the center. The other wall houses the refrigerator, a large corner pantry, built-in microwave oven, and a cooktop with a grill. Bedrooms 2 and 3 run the length of the right side. Each has their own fans, with large wall closets and big windows to provide great light. Between them is a full bath with a tub. Beyond the second bedroom is the vaulted screened porch. For extra light, two skylights have been added. The most unique part of the 2,277 square foot Plitt is the master suite. The vaulted suite area has a ceiling fan, five large windows, and a patio door opening onto the deck. Light is abundant. The master bath has “his and her” sinks, an oversized raised spa tub, and an oversized shower. Glass block and skylights bath the room in sunlight. A linen closet is across from an enormous walk-in closet. A pocket door in the closet allows access to the utility room. There is a sewing counter, a sink, an ironing board, and a rod for clothes. The door to the garage is outside utility room. A full height storage cabinet is on the sidewall along with the water softener, water heater, and forced air unit.

Call this the age of personalization. You can customize practically anything these days, from the kind of information you get on your favorite news feed and the offers you receive from your bank to the icons, background and sounds on your smartphone. Personalizing something really makes it feel more “yours,” so of course you want to be able to do that to your first home. If you’re shopping for your first home, you may already know what you want to do to personalize it. However, you may not be aware that certain features can make a home easier and more affordable to customize after you’ve moved in. For example, if you think you’ll need room to expand for a growing family down the road, it will be cheaper in the long run to buy a home with an attic or basement that you can finish into living space than to try and build on an addition from scratch. As you’re shopping for your first home, keep in mind these elements that will help make it easier and financially feasible for you to make your new home truly your own:
Architectural bones that are right for you What’s your personal style? Do you favor a mid-century modern look? Art-deco? Craftsman? Colonial? It’s important to choose a home in a basic architectural style you love, because while you can affordably change the color and landscaping, it’s much harder to create a whole new look. Look for exterior features that play up the home’s architectural style, and then think of ways to customize them down the road. For example, simply painting the gingerbread trim on your Victorian style
Sun Tunnel tubular skylights, which can be installed by a handy DIYer in a few hours. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more.
Room to grow
Brighten and add style to any area of your home with solar powered fresh air skylights or Sun Tunnel tubular skylights. Energy Star-qualified solar powered fresh air skylights from Velux America close automatically in case of rain, have three layers of water protection, and carry a 10-year warranty against leaks. The venting solar skylights, blinds, and installation costs are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit to the homeowner. Sun Tunnel tubular skylights are easily installed and especially useful in enclosed areas such as hallways. Get details at www.whyskylights.com.
Smart tips for buying a first-home that will be easy and affordable to personalize
home in a different color can celebrate the look you love while making it your own.
Energy efficient lifestyle features Green considerations and energy efficiency are top priorities for many of today’s first-time homebuyers, so it’s important to look for a home that has conservationminded features like a high-efficiency water heater or low-flow showerheads. The best eco-conscious home features, however, will also enhance your lifestyle. Upgrades like Energy Starqualified, solar-powered, fresh-air skylights like those from Velux America provide natural light plus passive ventilation, helping to cut energy costs while reducing dependency on artificial light and ventilation sources.
If you buy a home that already has skylights, you can personalize them by adding energy efficient blinds in designer colors and patterns. And if you add solar powered skylights to the home, it’s easy and cost-effective since there is no cost for electrical work to operate the units. Solar skylights, blinds and installation costs are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. A programmable touchpad remote allows you to adjust the amount of light entering through the venting skylights and also to adjust the blinds with the touch of button. The skylights close automatically in case of rain. You can also easily and affordably add more natural light to interior spaces like hallways and closets with
More Americans are living in multi-generational homes. Whether you plan to grow your family by having kids, moving your aging parents in with you, or adopting as many pets as you can fit in your house, you may find you’ll need more space in your new home before you’re ready to move out of it. Homes that have unfinished basements and/or attics will be easier to customize for your growing space needs. Converting an attic or basement into living space can cost much less than having an addition built on your home and attics are perfect spaces to easily add light and fresh air with skylights or roof windows.
A price that lets you add value Popular renovation and fixer-upper shows make it easy to understand the idea of finding a home at a price that will allow you to add value. A home that needs some renovation and upgrading will likely cost less than a comparable new home, but it also affords you the opportunity to extensively personalize your space. If you buy a home that needs work for a price well under your budget limit, you can use the extra money to invest in renovations that put your personal stamp on your home. In addition to customization for additional enjoyment, those upgrades will also allow you to instantly add value to your home.
Privacy in the bath comes along with abundant natural light plus silent, passive ventilation through Energy Star-qualified, solar powered fresh air skylights from Velux America. They have three layers of water protection and a 10-year warranty against leaks. Operated by programmable touchpad remote control, solar powered skylights and designer blinds, along with installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit to the homeowner. outdoor entertaining was once relegated to the warm weather seasons, advancements in technology have now made it more comfortable and enjoyable to entertain outdoors for much of the year. But hosts who want to extend the outdoor party after summer has come and gone should consider a few important entertaining tips.
Cold weather
outdoor
■ Start the party early. Summertime backyard barbecues and pool parties benefit from late-evening sunsets that illuminate patios and pool areas well into the evening. In addition, many hosts prefer to start such parties later in the day to avoid the sun during the early afternoon when it is at its most blazing. However, start the party earlier in the day when hosting in fall or early winter. Temperatures can drop considerably once the sun begins to set, so starting early can save hosts and their guests from cold air.
Fire pits can keep hosts and their guests warm during outdoor parties in late fall and early winter
entertaining Outdoor entertaining has never been more popular. As more and more homeowners turn their homes into their own personal oases, extending the party outdoors has become a bigger priority.
According to the American Home Furnishings Alliance’s 2015 Outdoor Furniture Trend Report, out-of-doors areas on a property are the favored venues for celebrations with family and friends. While
■ Heat things up. Summertime hosts might employ canopies to protect themselves and their guests from the heat, and it’s important for hosts to take similar steps when the weather is chillier. The AHFA report found that 38 percent of homeowners intended to purchase fire pits for their outdoor entertaining areas, and such fire pits can keep guests warm as the sun goes down and the night air

gets chilly. Fire pits have become musthave items for outdoor entertaining areas, and hosts can surely find one that suits their needs. ■ Change the menu. Grilling hot dogs and hamburgers might still work when entertaining outdoors in fall and winter, but hosts may want to stray from other summertime fare like watermelon or pasta salad. Embrace the cold weather by roasting some nuts and making s’mores over an open fire. In lieu of summertime beverages like lemonade and beer, serve hot chocolate or wine to keep guests warm. ■ Ensure there is adequate lighting. Mother Nature won’t offer much lighting when you host a party outdoors in late fall and early winter, so make sure your patios and sidewalks are well lit. Guests will want to see one another and what they’re eating, and well-lit walkways will reduce the risk that guests take a tumble or turn their ankles when walking to and from the house. Outdoor entertaining need not end because summer has come and gone. But hosts must take a different approach to hosting when throwing outdoor gatherings in late fall and early winter. DE16B533
