Savvy Suggestions HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER. This can save stress on a relationship (Aunt Hermione may be adept at planning the family Easter Egg Hunt, but that doesn’t qualify her to handle the myriad details of your most important day) and actually save you money. Planners have a history with vendors, often enabling them to negotiate deals, and they know how and where to unobtrusively cut expenses. They also can arrange lighting and recommend a photographer. Importantly, a planner will respect your budget. LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. All aspects of the ceremony should be compatible and coordinated. A cathedral train is overwhelming in a tiny country chapel, and the formality of the wedding should be reflected in the clothing of all members of the wedding party. An elaborate bouquet and lacy table linens fit a Victoria theme but clash with an informal ceremony in which the bride and her maids wear short sundresses. If you and your honor attendant share an affection for bright yellow,

or another tint that can be unflattering on many, you might consider a second shade for your bridesmaids. CONSIDER HOW YOU WILL FEEL SHOWING WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE FUTURE. A wedding dress that reveals too much (too shear or cut excessively low in front or back) may seem simply daring now but embarrassing in a couple of decades. And make sure guests know where, and if, they are allowed to snap pictures - normally NOT during the wedding. ADD A FAMILY HEIRLOOM - OR SEVERAL - TO YOUR RECEPTION. Centerpieces don’t have to be identical. If Grandma has a collection of crystal vases or elegant teapots, use them for flower arrangements. For a country wedding, cover the tables with quilts and tuck arrangements of autumn leaves and wheat - even pheasant feathers - into stoneware or graniteware. A SMALL BUDGET DOESN’T MEAN A YOU CAN’T HAVE A SPECIAL WEDDING. Being creative and consulting with your wedding planner can result in a wedding more memorable than one that costs many times more. MAKE SURE WEDDING ATTIRE FITS. Chose all attire in plenty of time to allow fittings and make sure fabrics are comfortable for the season. If the train or skirt needs to be adjusted during the ceremony, practice the maneuver with the attendant to avoid disruption.

Sarah-Daye Hand Certified Wedding Planner Organized • Effervescent • Passionate

Here’s what our clients say: “Sarah-Daye was the best wedding planner we could have asked for! Her attention to detail and charm is what made our day seamless! ENJOY THE WEDDING AND RECEPTION. Eat sensibly, drink lots of water and rest in the weeks preceding the ceremony. Allowing enough time for preparation and using a good wedding planner can make the months prior to the wedding nearly as fun as the wedding itself. No matter how skimpy your budget is, don’t try to save money by doing the cleanup yourself. You and your family will need to relax when the celebrations conclude. REMEMBER: IT IS YOUR WEDDING. Listen to ideas but make your own choices. If your mother’s dream of carrying an elaborate bouquet of orchids was unrealized because your parents eloped, but you prefer lilies, lilies it is! And you don’t have to wear the family gown that has been passed down for generations unless you love it or it can be remade into something that fits your taste. There will be no shortage of opinions and advice, so repeat daily, “It is MY wedding.” From this day forward...2016

Her Day...Her Dress The bride is the star . . . and her dress is the most important item she will purchase for her wedding. Everyone will remember the wedding gown - particularly the bride! After years of dreaming of how she will look on her wedding day, the bride is finally ready to make her fairy tale become a reality. A-line, ballgown, empire, sheath, tea-length, casual, peplum, mermaid, strapless or shortie are some popular styles. The bride must also choose fabric type, color, neckline, sleeve length, veil or no veil… decisions, decisions. Thousands of options and multiple styles are available, which can make this decision overwhelming. Bridal salons can advise the best style for the bride’s body type and price range. This should be a fun experience, enjoyed by the bride and those closest to her.

Making Memories Choosing the venue for a wedding is one of the most important decisions a bride and groom makes. Church, hotel, historic mansion, beach, outdoors . . . the venue is pivotal to the ceremony and reception. Churches have been the traditional site for weddings and remain popular with many couples. Historical churches have a special charm and quaintness that make a lovely setting. The venues possibilities are unlimited. A growing number of couples choose to be married outdoors, on a beach, at a golf course or in a barn - rustic settings are increasingly popular. Garden weddings can be casual, farm to table or elegant. Hotels, resorts, museums and locations with historical interest offer different amenities. Favorite restaurants, inns, wineries, country clubs, community buildings, marinas, pool and river settings continue to be sought after spots. It is a special day, so choose the very best venue for the two of you!

Grooming the Groom It’s your wedding, too! If you and the bride are, as many career professionals do, paying for part or all of the wedding expenses, it is up to the two of you to make the decisions, although you will want to consult with family. Even if your soon-to-be in-laws are writing all the checks, however, you still need to be involved. But never interfere in temporary spats between the bride and her family. You will be the only one to suffer lasting wounds, because your bride will long remember any aspersions you cast on her parents or siblings. Your main responsibilities are YOUR family and groomsmen. Your family will have questions and requests. They will need to know how many names they can contribute to the guest list, if the wedding is family only, how many are in the wedding party, maybe even suggestions for where to hold the rehearsal dinner. You will need to find out the answers, and you will also need to tactfully voice their concerns. Hopefully, the two families get along well, but misunderstandings can explode in the stress of planning a wedding, particularly if the families barely know one another, so it may be up to you to diffuse a situation. You are the link. The groomsmen need to receive their information from you. Put everything in writing, via emails in which you copy the bride. Once you and your bride have chosen the outfits, provide the details to your attendants: the location with directions; when to get fitted (double check that they make their appointment); when to pick up the tux (remind each to get his outfit in time to try it on and have adjustments made, if needed); and when the tux needs to be returned. Never assume anyone has previous experience, and always assume they will forget something. Let them know their responsibilities! Express your opinions, likes and dislikes. If your wife-to-be is thinking of an ultra formal service with 500 guests, and you would prefer a mountain top wedding on horseback with a minimal number of attendees . . . it is time to talk. Maybe you can agree on a formal outdoor affaire to which you invite 200-300 guests. If your bride wants a bouquet and table decorations of roses, lilies, and tulips, feel free to mention your dislike of lilies. If the proposed wedding colors are pink and lavender and you detest pink, perhaps blue and lavender are possible. Look for something positive with which you can agree when stating what you wish to veto. But be prepared to back out gracefully if you sense the bride is adamant about something. Offer to do research, particularly if there are one or two areas that interest you . . . reception venues, music, honeymoon packages, transportation (limo, horse and carriage, boat?). Be involved and creative. Help your bride: Offer ideas for the gift registry, including some that are not household items; take on duties; and make sure she takes a

couple of hours to relax occasionally (yes, there IS time in your schedules to enjoy an afternoon picnic!). Although stress is inevitable, planning the wedding should be part of the happy memories. If it isn’t fun or family differences threaten to escalate, suggest hiring a wedding planner. They are professionals and know how to deal with all possible situations. IMPORTANT! Remember to do something special for your bride, give her a gift the evening before the wedding or right before the ceremony. A heartfelt note or a meaningful memento such as a glass pendant encasing sand from the beach where you met or got engaged . . .thoughtful sentiment is more important than cost. It’s your wedding, so have fun! –Karen Rogers

Beautiful and Delicious It may be a cake, cupcake or a special sweet treat, but a celebratory confection is a necessary - and much anticipated - part of every wedding reception. Get creative! These professionals can create your dream. The sky is the limit - from themes, colors, jewelry and flowers to match the wedding décor to any shape and size of cake. The cake topper can be almost anything you can imagine. The flavors are as endless as the décor; salty caramel continues to be a favorite, and - just to name a few - there are Madagascar bourbon, coconut, white chocolate, lemon raspberry ripple and, of course, carrot cake. Sweet confections are popular wedding favors, from sumptuous truffles to personalized candies. A Candy Buffet, often called a “Candy Bar,” is a great dessert addition that adds color and fun to a reception. Many couples serve candies that match their wedding colors and décor, or they arrange a selection of their childhood favorites on tables for self-service. Favor and candy packaging can be very simple or elaborately customized. Another option for a “Candy Bar” is for these special candies to be served as toppings for ice cream.

Blossoms & Bouquets Simple, classic, vibrant or elaborate . . . flowers set the mood of a wedding. Get advice about fresh flowers and plants and find innovative ways to use them by working with experts. The bride may carry a single rose or a cascade of multiple blooms, and her attendants may have single blooms or nosegays, either matching or individually styled. From wildflowers to rare orchids, almost anything is available. For a holiday wedding, sprigs of holly or vibrant bittersweet make unusual arrangements, corsages and bouquets. Even seagrass can be used! Eco weddings are a new trend with potted flowers, plants and shrubs used in decorating the wedding and reception venues or even used as bouquets and boutonnieres. During the reception, potted centerpieces can be given as a memento to a couple at each table whose wedding anniversary is closest to the newlyweds’ special day. The only limit is one’s imagination.

COOKE’S GARDENS Jeff & Karen Schell, owners; Jessica Mueller, manager Specialty: Local Garden Center specializing in annuals, perennials, container gardening, trees, shrubs, landscaping, irrigation, landscape lighting, mulch and soils. Family owned for 26 years with a knowledgeable staff for all your gardening needs. What makes you unique? Our sustainable, eco-friendly weddings. We use live plants to create beautiful centerpieces, bouquets and boutonnieres and decorate stages, aisles and alters with trees, shrubs, annual and perennials. We can take care of all of your floral needs for your special day! Building centerpieces together at Cooke’s Gardens is a great experience for the bride and bridal party. These also make a great take

all because two people fell in love…

Details Galore The future spouse, date and venue are chosen. Now it is time to attend to all of the details in order make the wedding complete. The engagement ring presents many options. Popular traditional diamond cuts are brilliant (round), princess and emerald, but there are many additional shapes. Although diamonds are the traditional gem, virtually any stone can be chosen. Wedding bands can be any style, from simple to elaborately encrusted with stones. If he chooses to wear one, the groom’s ring can match the bride’s band or be a totally different style. Premarital counseling is increasingly popular and required by some clergy. Strategies for dealing with the inevitable problems and challenges in a marriage can be learned to help build a strong relationship and get off to a positive start. There are many aspects of preparation for a wedding, and the savvy wedding couple often decides that a wedding/event planner is the best way to actually make the planning part of the fun. Also, a planner can answer questions and knows vendors and innovative ways for reducing expenses. Event planning, coordination, decor and rentals are all areas of expertise for event professionals.

38

Numerous stationary items are required to get everyone included in your special day. Save-the-date cards, Invitations, place cards, Table numbers and Thank you notes are quite common purchases. You get to pick the paper stock, color of the ink, font and wording. Use a reliable vendor, so you can be assured that all details are handled perfectly. There is nothing like putting the details in print to make a wedding seem real! Who will officiate at the wedding? If you have your own Church, or a friend or family member is an officiant, this is an easy decision. If you attend different churches, the choice may be a joint or shared ceremony, utilizing both of your clergy. If you need an officiant, they are available to hire, or a local official may marry you. Anyone can marry you, if they get ordained by a credible organization prior to the ceremony. A caterer may be required for wedding events or your reception, depending upon your venue choice. Everyone wants great food and the right menu that works within their budget. You will need to decide your reception type, is there going to be a cocktail hour, food stations, buffet or sit down dinner? Keep in mind options for guests with dietary or religious restrictions. Pick a proven caterer or restaurant that you can trust and rely on, to make your day as perfect, as possible.

Wedding photographs will be treasured for the rest of your life, so make sure you consult with a talented professional to choose when and what you want memorialized. You may think you will remember every detail, but wonderful moments that might have been forgotten will come to mind each time you open your book of wedding photographs. What type of music would you like for your ceremony and what is your entertainment preference for your reception? Will you hire a DJ or a band and what are you music choices? Are there family traditions to consider and do you have a special song? Would you like to have a photo booth to add some fun to the reception and a possible favor for your guests? Whoever, you choose can make your reception a hit and memorable for you and your guests. Schedule your appointment for hair, make-up and nails at your favorite your salon or spa. This can be a lot of fun for the entire bridal party to do together. Stylists will work with you in advance to choose your hair style. Some salons will provide services off-site at the location, where you are preparing for the wedding. Don’t forget the little details like guest favors and gift bags for out of town guests. Favors can be almost anything; chocolate truffles, frames for their photo booth pictures, candy, koozies, flowers, seeds or plants. You can be as creative as you want. Gift bags, personalized or plain, are a wonderful welcome for your out-of-town guests. It is helpful to include activity details relating to wedding events and area information such as maps, magazines and booklets. Water, candies, snacks, chocolates, something for a headache and small bottles are nice additions. The bride and groom also need to choose gifts for each other and for their bridal party. The bride also must decide what jewelry she will wear for her special day. Jewelry and gift shops offer beautiful pieces to wear and give as gifts, such as unique silver pieces, bracelets, necklaces, frames, money clips and pewter items. There are lots of decisions you will make as a couple. Will one of you move in with the other or will you chose a new place together? Will you rent or buy? If you choose to buy, a professional realtor can help you find just the right place. They will help guide you to homes within your budget that best meet your combined “Wish List.” After you decide where you are going to live, you are ready to choose furnishings and the other items you need for your home together. You can begin by merging agreed upon items from each of your current residences. The remaining things can be chosen together and either included in your wedding registry, 6-9 months before your wedding, or . . . it is time to start shopping!

Even stamps on the envelopes -- stamps like the over 40-yearold Love series at www.usps.com/stamps/sealed-with-love.htm -- carry special meaning. Once you are back from your honeymoon and rested from your wedding, slowly take time to write appreciative thank-you notes for gifts and any acts of kindness and help. In each card, be sure to mention the gift and how much you appreciate it. Keep the message brief but sincere.

When those notes are done, you may want to write notes to your wedding party, expressing how much their involvement made your day and how you hope they will always be a part of your married life. Cards and notes make special people feel even more special. Before you write a stack of them after a big event like a wedding, draft a simple formula and add a few personal touches to each one. Your handwritten thoughtfulness will bring many smiles when the notes are opened and read.

Jillian Elyse Perlow marries

Michael Andrew McGraw June 13, 2015 Photographer: Heather Hughes Photography Ceremony and Reception: Two Rivers Country Club Sunday Post-wedding brunch: Colonial Heritage Club Flowers: Morrison’s Flowers Cake: Cakes by Charlie Hair & Make-up: European Beauty Concepts Make-up artist: Jamie Weist DJ: CJ Grenier from Colonial DJ’s They currently live in Charlottesville, Virginia. First Date: Relaxing day of lawn games. Michael won! The proposal: After a breakfast picnic on the beach, on their last day, in the Outer Banks Michael surprised Jillian by her to marry him. Bridal Shower: The Newlywed Game was played at Jillian’s bridal shower, and Michael “attended” via a huge screen at the luncheon. Jillian did not do well at matching Michael’s prerecorded responses. The wedding: Michael & Jillian had an outdoor ceremony overlooking the river, enjoyed a cocktail hour with the beautiful views and the reception was inside the main ballroom, with a lovely sunset over the water. The threatening storms totally missed the Two Rivers Country Club. Groom’s cake: Because he loves all things UVA, Jillian’s friend, Hannah, made Michael a UVA groom’s cake shaped like the famous rotunda. It was filled with his favorite bourbon chocolate cake. Special touches: Family wedding photos and childhood pictures displayed at the reception. They had napkins that were blue and gray (for Georgetown) and orange and blue (for UVA). To Have & To Hold You may not be destined to write a book or even a short story, but you can write your own wedding vows. Creative, endearing wedding vows don’t have to be fashioned from elaborate sentences and fancy words. The best wedding vows come from the heart and the love you feel for the person standing with you. “A good officiant can help you craft wedding vows that are both meaningful and unique,” says Kim Forrest, editor at WeddingWire, www.weddingwire.com “The best wedding vows I’ve heard combine personal anecdotes, a touch of appropriate humor and real emotion. We’ve all seen viral videos with vows that are totally creative, but I think what’s most important is that the vows fit the couple and their personality.”

Wedding vow tips • Read other vows for inspiration. • Decide with your fiancé if you want your vows to be spiritual, poetic or humorous. • Jot down notes about your relationship – how you met, your best moments, your best feelings. • Include a couple vows – promises for your married life. • Keep your vows to the point and brief. • Practice in front of a mirror. • Tuck a typed copy somewhere you can quickly reach on your wedding day in case your nerves get the best of you and you want to read them.

From Miss to Mrs. While many brides opt to take their husbands’ surnames upon tying the knot, over the years the popularity of such a decision has ebbed and flowed. Recent years have suggested the practice is once again gaining steam. A 2011 study published in Names: A Journal of Onomastics indicates that younger brides are more likely to embrace the tradition of taking their husbands’ names in marriage. According to the study, women who married between the ages of 35 and 39 were 6.4 times more likely to keep their maiden names than those who married between the ages of 20 and 24. Many brides view taking their spouse’s name as the natural transition from being a singleton to being a married woman. Other brides prefer they share the same last name as their future children, making the choice to take their husband’s name a logical decision. Some brides feel having the same last name as their husbands helps them feel more like a family. Changing one’s name also may make it easier to deal with various issues. Finances, travel and even parenting concerns may be easier when women take their husbands’ last names than when they don’t.

But some brides still prefer to keep their maiden names or hyphenate those names with their husbands’ surnames. Some may view changing their names as sacrificing their personal identities, while others may want to hold on to a family name they are proud of. Interesting names also can be hard to give up. Brides who find taking their husband’s name would be a tongue-twister may prefer to forego this tradition. Very often women who occupy positions of prominence in their professions keep their maiden names, feeling that taking their husbands’ names will affect the cache they have built up thus far. Women uncertain of what to do in such situations can keep their maiden names professionally and still change their names legally. Changing one’s last name is a personal preference and a decision that couples should discuss together. Discuss the decision well in advance of the wedding so that both parties are aware of each other’s feelings on the subject before tying the knot. --Metro Editorial
