Rain or Shine Duke of Gloucester & North Boundary Street Merchants Square, Williamsburg Presented by The Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg A Supplement to The Virginia Gazette and The Tidewater Review April 22, 2015 | A Supplement to The Virginia Gazette | ART ON THE SQUARE | 1

Letter from the JWCW President

O

n behalf of the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg (JWCW), welcome! We would not have made it to our 52nd year without the support we receive from our show artists, our locals, the City of Williamsburg, The Merchants Square Association, as well as The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. I would like to extend a special thank you to our volunteer jurors and judges, and our JWCW club members who give of themselves and their time to make this show the continued success that it is. Our featured artist again this year is Richard DePaul. He has generously gifted his original watercolor “Backyard Gazebo” to JWCW. This original watercolor will be available to win through our raffle. The print of his original painting is also our official 2015 AOTS poster. These posters, including raffle tickets and past show posters, can be purchased at the JWCW tent the day of the show. Proceeds from raffle tickets and poster sales support our Arts Scholarships and help our Club continue to give back to the community year after year. We are grateful for the guidance and support Richard and Janet DePaul have given JWCW throughout the years with Art Scholarships. To show our appreciation, last year the name of these scholarships was changed to the “Richard E. and Janet L. DePaul Art Scholarship”. We are also fortunate to be partnering with Nora Bartlett and the staff of Walls Alive. They will be under the JWCW tent with special pricing for the framing of our posters. Walls Alive graciously donates a portion of the proceeds from framing back to our Arts Donations. To date, they have given more than $2,700. Thank you, Nora! The Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg is proud to support the art community of Williamsburg. We can happily announce that in 2014, we were able to give almost $20,000 in donations to local organizations focusing on art and art education. We are also very pleased that we are able to award $4,000 in scholarships to local high school seniors who will further pursue their art education at the college level. We hope you enjoy visiting 170 booths of fine art. Without the support of our artists, many of whom return year after year, we would not be entering our 52nd year. So, thank you!

52 Years

Let the show begin! Meghan M. Mayfield Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg President

A

rt on the Square is dedicated to About Art on the Square providing an art show that offers and the Junior Woman’s original, high quality, handcrafted and diverse mediums of art. This Club of Williamsburg juried art show is traditionally held in the spring on the last Sunday of April and is organized and hosted by an enthusiastic group of young women, members of the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg. Now in its 52nd year, Art on the Square is one of the club’s principal fundraisers to support community art initiatives. Proceeds from today’s booth rentals will be donated to visual and performing arts organizations to promote arts and cultural awareness throughout the greater Williamsburg area including Williamsburg, James City and York counties. As a result of this show, we are able to support such worthwhile organizations as the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra, Stage Lights, Early Childhood Music School, Flute Frenzy and many others. Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets and show posters support our Richard E. and Janet L. DePaul Visual and Performing Arts Scholarships, which are awarded to talented local high school students to further their arts education. If you would like more information about Art on the Square, information on applying to next year’s show, or information on applying for a donation to your organization, please visit our website www.williamsburgjuniors.org or write to: Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg, P.O. Backyard Gazebo

O

nce again this year award winning local artist, Richard DePaul, has joined forces with the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg by donating an original watercolor to raise funds for art scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors who have been accepted into a visual or performing arts program at the college or university level. The 2015 commemorative poster, Backyard Gazebo, is indicative of DePaul’s Williamsburg artworks which tend to feature the backyards, gardens and lesser structures of Williamsburg, rather than the larger and better known buildings. Behind the flower covered picket fence, the ogee roofed gazebo in the foreground leads the eye beyond to other dependencies; perhaps a smoke house and kitchen dependency. The spring pinks and yellows accent the whitewashed buildings with a splash of color as the leaves on the trees begin to show their style. “These simple outbuildings have a purity of structure which I like to try to capture,” says DePaul. “The pinks, yellows and fresh greens colors of spring are always a favorite of mine. Backyard Gazebo by Richard DePaul Use your imagination to relax in the gazebo enjoying a delightful spring evening.”

I’m at Sarah Lawrence College, and I am having the BEST time. I was cast in two shows last semester - a workshop and a reading. Sarah Lawrence is unique because most of the theatre program is process-oriented, so I’ve been involved in studentwritten/directed work more than I have been in normal published plays and musicals. I’ve become a more well-rounded artist as opposed to JUST an actress. I’m taking classes in dramatic improvisation, stage management, theatre outreach, and playwriting. The theatre outreach has been my favorite class because I’m literally teaching theatre to different age groups - one session on Wednesday mornings with 7th graders and one session on Saturday mornings with 1st - 3rd graders. I’ve discovered a love for the educational side of theatre, which I never would have experienced if it hadn’t been for the program at Sarah Lawrence. This semester, I’ve been cast in two more shows. One is actually the same original play that I was in the reading for last semester, which is very exciting! The other show will be a weeklong process with a small all-women cast. I’m a certified Zumba instructor, so I’m really exploring my dancing skills as well!

For the past year I have been attending the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts where I have been diligently working towards completing my art foundation program, which is a prerequisite for applying for a specific major within the School of the Arts. I am hoping to major in Communication Arts and minor in Painting and Printmaking this upcoming school year. The Richard E. and Janet L. DePaul scholarship went towards my tuition for attending the University and has helped to lift a bit of the financial weight off of my shoulders, helping me to focus on my schoolwork. I am very excited about the work I have been producing this year and I feel myself improving every day. I have had the opportunity to explore many new mediums and cannot wait to jump into a specific major.

Where

are they

now? Isabel Florimonte I am currently at James Madison University pursuing a choral music education degree. My primary instrument is piano. I am in the University Women’s Choir here and enjoy singing under the direction of Dr. Vat-Chromy. My piano professor is Dr. Ruple and I have lessons once a week. Last semester I received all A’s on my jury, which is a piano final where you perform prepared pieces in front of the faculty. This scholarship has allowed me to pursue what I love, and I could not be happier. Attending classes about music, practicing on grand pianos daily, and being involved in the arts community here at JMU is a dream come true.
