Dear Virginia Gazette, Daily Press & Tidewater Review Readers,

A

lthough October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we at Beyond Boobs! have always promoted “Breast Health Action” instead. Recognizing when we formed seven years ago that “breast cancer awareness” was very passive (who isn’t aware of breast cancer?), we were one of the first organizations to focus on breast health and changing unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, and other organizations have followed our lead. Through means such as speaking engagements, A Calendar to Live By, Good Health Fairies, and a rolling 18-wheeler billboard named “Ma’am O’Gram,” we educate to motivate all women (and the men who love them) to manage their own risk of breast cancer, advocate for their health, and adopt a lifestyle of wellness. Another way we are different from other non-profits is that we aren’t focused on a future cure; we are helping women dealing with breast cancer NOW. Through (currently) thirteen “Not Your Typical” Support Systems, we help to restore young women diagnosed with breast cancer to health – mind, body, and spirit, encourage healthy habits to reduce their risk of recurrence, and show them how to live life with an exclamation point (!) instead of a period. So, for your health’s sake, we invite you to make this October the start of your personal Breast Health Action Year! Here are some things you should know no matter your age or gender: FACT 1 • 1 in 8 women in their lifetime in the United States will develop breast cancer, and, though rare, men can develop breast cancer too. But that means 7 out of 8 won’t!

FACT 2 • Breast cancer is no respecter of race or age. Even young women can develop it. Caucasian women have the highest rate of breast cancer (followed by African-Americans), but the trend is reversed in women under 35. FACT 3 • Never dismiss a concern just because someone, including your doctor, tells you “you’re too young to have breast cancer,” “breast cancer doesn’t cause pain,” or “don’t worry, you have no family history of breast cancer.” These are NOT good reasons to postpone checking out your concern. Why, 85% of breast cancers occur in women with no family history! Request (insist if necessary) a screening method that will medically validate or disprove your concern, especially if you have dense breasts.

FACT 4 • Don’t let fear, denial, or being “too busy” keep you from taking the steps necessary to monitor your breast health. Ignoring the possibility you may develop breast cancer does not prevent you from getting it, but may prevent you from catching it in its earliest stages when the survival rate is highest. FACT 5 • Get annual mammograms, clinical breast exams, and other screening methods appropriate for your age and risk level. For women under 40, health insurance typically won’t cover mammograms, and clinical exams are recommended only every three years. Because these screening techniques are not always available or foolproof, it is critical to monitor your own breast health, whatever your age. BOTTOM LINE • Because EARLY DETECTION IS OUR “BREAST” PROTECTION, you need to become familiar with your own body and know what is normal for YOU. That way you’ll be alert to any changes in your breasts. Breast cancer can take many forms from lumps to swelling to skin changes, so see a medical professional promptly if you notice any changes (but don’t panic – 8 out of 10 lumps are not cancer!). As you notice all the pink this month we hope you will pause and think of the 220,000 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, the three million survivors in this country, and the many lives that have been lost to this devastating disease. Then embrace the women you know who are fighting it now with grace and courage. We at Beyond Boobs! are so grateful to the people, businesses, and organizations who enable us to do just that. We are here educating and supporting because of you. From our hearts, thank you! With big, healthy hugs,

René Bowditch and Mary Beth Gibson Co-founders, Beyond Boobs! Inc.

ight years ago, a small group of young women with breast cancer met in Williamsburg – just to be there for each other.

By Kathy Van Mullekom Photograph by Julie Harberts Purple Owl Photography

They discovered many of them had delayed diagnoses based solely on being too young or other myths about breast cancer. They realized they had to share with all women – and men -- “the things we wished we had known” about breast health and how to take charge of their own destiny. They also wanted to help breast cancer’s pink ribbon campaign focus more on early detection. Thus, the beginning of Beyond Boobs!, a Williamsburg-based support group equipped with humor, a Good Health Fairy and the will to make a difference and save lives.

René Bowditch | Good Health Fairy 6 • BREAST CANCER Awareness • OCTOBER 2014

“We were trying to convey that we were beyond the disease that originated in our breasts and beyond letting society define women by our body parts,” says co-founder Mary Beth Gibson, now 49 and diagnosed with breast cancer at age 41. Back then, Mary Beth had three small children, ages 2, 6, and 7, cared for by their stay-at-home dad while she worked full time, all through her aggressive treatment of eight rounds of chemotherapy, bilateral mastectomy and radiation therapy. “We also wanted to show that even though we knew firsthand how serious the disease was, we also knew that a sense of humor goes a long way in facing all of life’s challenges, especially a life threatening illness,” says co-founder René Bowditch, aka the group’s Good Health Fairy. Now 64, René was diagnosed at age 52. Both women live in the Williamsburg area. “We are a ‘health,’ not cancer, organization because our goal is to encourage healthy lifestyles both to reduce risk for all women and to help those we support regain their health and live life,” continues René. “Our support services, which are the largest part of our programming, are specifically for young women diagnosed before menopause because although there are many resources for older women, few exist for young women with this disease.” Since that small gathering, Beyond Boobs! has grown to reach more than 450 breast cancer survivors in four states. Their expansion is especially concentrated on the Peninsula and Virginia Beach. The group’s vast expansion is made possible through a growing network of individual, community-based and peer-led “not your typical support systems, aka NYTS, according to René. The model connects young breast cancer survivors in their own localities through monthly support gatherings in a home setting run by trained, volunteer facilitators, private

Facebook groups and “chick” activities where “Boobers!” get together to have fun and forget about cancer for a while, continues René. There’s also an annual region-wide beach retreat, parades, health fairs and other events. “The close bonds of friendship formed result in support that spills over to caregivers, spouses and children, too,” says René. “These systems are so much more than just monthly support group meetings.”

Fund-raising efforts include the group’s annual calendar – “A Calendar to Live By” with tips on caring for self. The calendar, which has a 2015 theme of “Shades of Gray,” always stars its own members as calendar girls. The $20 calendars can be purchased online at www.beyondboobs. org or Silhouette’s Mastectomy Boutique in Newport News, Victorious Images in Norge area of James City County and The Wine Seller and Quirks of Art in Williamsburg. Signature events that benefit Beyond Boobs! include its Pink Carpet Gala to premier the annual calendar (held Sept. 20), Petals for a Cure Oct. 4 in Newport News, Annual Run for the Hills 10K Oct. 11 in Williamsburg , Starlets of Dance Nov. 16 in Virginia Beach, annual “Breast: Ball Tournament April 24 in Virginia Beach and 3rd annual Breast Fest in May in Virginia Beach. Rashida Strayhorne-Mahoney

B

reast cancer has been one of the hardest times – mentally and physically -- in Rashida Strayhorne-Mahoney’s life. Spiritually, it’s been a blessing in disguise, drawing her closer to God and her faith. “I’ve had overwhelming amount of love from family and friends locally and at a distance,” says Rashida, 30, and the mother of 9-year-old daughter, Kiara. “God has a plan and I have to trust in him.” Diagnosed in April 2013, the active-duty Air Force technical sergeant has always been energetic and active, but treatments and surgeries drained her. “I felt like I was losing my lifestyle and everything that I worked hard for and I was frustrated trying to get it back,” says Rashida, who lives in Newport News. “I’ve come to realize that things are going to be different from now on and it’s OK.” Through it all, she’s also had the support of Beyond Boobs!, working with fund-raisers, races/walks and going to the Conference for Young Women with Breast Cancer. In 2015, she pictured as Miss May in the support group’s annual calendar – “A Calendar to Live By,” available for $20 at www.beyondboobs.org.

“Beyond Boobs! has been there to help me understand that everything that I’m going through is normal,” she says. Before breast cancer, Rashida’s health was pretty much normal and unsuspecting. She barely did self-exams on her breasts, especially given there was no family history. But, while doing one of those rare and random checks, she found a small lump in her right breast. An ultrasound and biopsy confirmed the news – she was HER2 positive, meaning her cancer was more aggressive. “It seemed like everything around me turned black and the floor dropped from underneath me,” she says. After calling her parents and some friends, she left work and immediately went to see a nearby aunt, where she finally broke down. “Then, she looked at me and told me to focus because I had a battle ahead of me,” Rashida says. “It was exactly what I needed to hear and from that moment on, I’ve been fighting.” Rashida immediately had a lumpectomy, which came back showing there were still traces of cancer. After talking to other survivors, loved ones and praying, she opted for a bilateral mastectomy, and then eight cycles of intense chemotherapy and five to six weeks of daily radiation treatments. Special things and special people got her through surgery and treatments, she adds. The military people around her, her medical team and her parents were all there for her, she says. “Mainly, my daughter Kiara is my motivation,” she says. “My daughter is used to seeing me working, jogging, boxing, networking, studying, dancing, etc. She’s used to me being superwoman and now she was seeing me at a very weak moment -- so weak that I could barely make it around without her having to take me by the hand. “I used to pass out on her while we reviewed her homework and I’d wake up in middle of the night and I’d be tucked in. There had been times when she should’ve been scared, yet she remained that strong, happy little girl and it motivated me even more. I promised myself to make sure that it was only temporary and I remained focused -- like my aunt told me to me the day I was diagnosed.” Currently, Rashida is in less invasive chemo treatments that she does every three weeks for a year. She’s also planning reconstruction. “Life has been a challenge, but I’m in love with my journey. I view time differently and I don’t want to waste it.”

Janell Nickols

W

hile recuperating from total hip replacement at age 35, Janell Nickols watched a TV show in which Richard Rudolph talked about losing his wife, singer and songwriter, Minnie Ripperton, to breast cancer. Coincidentally, Janell began to feel strange sensations – not a lump, but just a passing pain and unusual sensation -- in her right breast. A baseline mammogram detected a small calcification, and a needle biopsy determined it was ductal carcinoma in situ (in the milk ducts) with lobular tendencies. “Of course, the first thing I thought was that I was going to die,” says Janell, now 61. “I was very depressed for a while, thinking that I would never see my babies grow up. Eventually, hope began to overcome the fear and despair, and I just wanted to get the surgery and treatment over so I could move on with life. “And, Minnie Ripperton’s song, ‘Loving You’ stayed with me through all this. I just wanted to stick around to love my children, my husband, my family and my friends.” At the time, Janell was doing a chaplaincy residency program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where she consulted with physicians, one of whom came to her nearby home to discuss 12 • BREAST CANCER AWARENESS • OCTOBER 2014

her care. Janell’s treatment option was pretty straightforward – a modified radical mastectomy on the right breast with a biopsy on the left, due to the seriousness of the lobular tendencies of the cancer. At surgery time, she also began plastic surgery reconstruction. At that point in time, few support groups like Beyond Boobs! existed for young women, says Janell, who now volunteers with the Williamsburg-based support group. She’s pictured as Miss April in the support group’s annual calendar – “A Calendar to Live By,” available for $20 at www.beyondboobs.org. “My husband was my number one support system,” she says of James, a retired Navy chaplain and now pastor at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in the Norge area of James City County. The two met and married while they were active-duty chaplains in 1982; today, Janell teaches fifth-graders at Stonehouse Elementary School, also in James City County. “I am sure that by the time I had had two children, one hip replacement, and breast cancer, he was wondering, after only six or so years of marriage, what he had gotten himself into. But he was -- and is -- a trooper! He was Mr. Mom, Mrs. Dad, Dr. Pastor, Rev. Teacher, as well as chef, housekeeper and social director. “And, as a person of faith, I found that my relationship with God provided me the strength I needed to get through the difficult days.” Even now, 25 years later, Janell remembers those months like it was yesterday. She believes it all made her a better person, and taught her that she can make it through adversity with the help of God and family. “As a long-term survivor with a diagnosis at a young age, I feel that I have a unique perspective to share,” she says of her involvement with Beyond Boobs! She’s on no further treatments, but faithfully has a mammogram annually. Her daughter, 29, also has yearly testing. The diagnosis did little to change Janell’s lifestyle because back then there was little information about breast cancer, diet and exercise. “I grew up in a family that loved to grill steaks, and lather baked potatoes with tons of butter,” she says. “While we ate vegetables regularly, I am not sure that they were prepared in a particularly healthy fashion. And, in terms of exercise, the concept of the value of ‘aerobic’ exercise was just coming into the fore. We knew about healthy lifestyles, but I don’t think people really understood that it might prevent cancer. Now that we are more knowledgeable in this regard, I think more people are taking a look at what they do with their bodies. “But, I still think there are a lot that still think ‘it can’t happen to me’ or that they have no control over the situation.” Her advice to women just diagnosed with breast cancer? “Surround yourself with supportive people,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Don’t let fear, worry, and pain overcome you. Rather, look for the hope and growth that can guide you each day. Most of all, believe in yourself, and allow yourself to be loved by God, family and friends.”

to get more connected with the local community. After debate and research, the club chose Beyond Boobs! So far, they’ve raised $30,000 for the group’s breast cancer efforts. “René Bowditch and Mary Beth Gibson came in and gave an outstanding presentation as to who and what Beyond Boobs! are,” says Old Dudes president Mike Bruner, 45, who lives in Norfolk. “They stood their ground to some pretty aggressive questioning and sold us on them.” Since then, Beyond Boobs! and Old Dudes has bonded into its own family. “My wife is a two-time breast cancer survivor and a member of Beyond Boobs!,” says member Ronnie Gingras, 52 and a Portsmouth resident. “Which is what we as a group were looking for; the support for them has become personal,” adds Mike. “Beyond Boobs! is our only charity. They have become part of our family, they are our sisters and many have become deeply embedded in our lives.” Old Dudes spends the spring raising funds, starting with its annual golf tournament in May. They also participate in as many festivals as possible – spring Car and Bike Show and Blackbeard Festival, both in Hampton, to name a few. “We’ve done the Hampton block so many times that people come looking for us to donate,” says Mike. The group raffles off luxury gifts – custom cycles, golf cart with matching trailer, TVs and iPads – and sponsors fundraising rides. “Our Poker Run, which attracts 200 riders, has been in conjunction with Father’s Day weekend,” says Mike. “What better gift for a riding dad then a 100-mile ride supporting breast health?” Membership in Old Dudes is first and foremost about motorcycles, Ronnie and Mike

Members live in all parts of Hampton Roads – Gloucester, Yorktown, Hampton, Newport News, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Franklin – and even Gates County, N.C. “The name was chosen because in order to join the club, you must be 30 years old, with most members well above that age group,” says Ronnie who rides a 2006 Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider. “We are more than just a club, we are family,” says Mike, who rides a 2011 Harley Davidson Fatboy. “Most of the club rides Harleys as well. We do require our members to ride either an American- or English-made motorcycle over 600cc.” Old Dudes meets at 7 p.m. Wednesdays at various sites; if you’re interested in membership, email Dan Kinard at jdkinard@ verizon.net. FALL 2014 Why would you want to buy blended grass seed? They say it’s “blended for our area”- but look at the tag carefully. Blends are composed of several kinds of seeds and it’s possible that as much as 1/3 of the product is “blended” for a condition which doesn’t apply to your yard. For instance, if you’re planting in the shade, you hardly need 1/3 of the seed which is selected to grow in the sun and vice versa. That means that as much as 1/3 of your money is being wasted and, in today’s economy, who wants to waste 1/3 of the money you’re spending to improve your lawn? Peninsula Hardwood Mulch offers TITAN RX Tall fescue, a pure grade seed which thrives in this area, is green year-round and can be grown in sun or shade. It’s a fine blade, dark green grass with a deep root system that can search out

FILL IN THE BLANKS Over time all lawns experience some sort of damage, leaving bare spots. Maybe damage is caused from a pet, a piece of lawn furniture, or adverse weather. It happens to every lawn. While most tall fescue varieties have only a limited ability to fill in these blank spots, titan Rx has been specially selected to produce rhizomes (for underground shoots) quickly, enabling it to provide increased density and fill in bare spots with new plants.

3D Mammography finds 35% more cancer.

*

Seeing is believing.

W

A whole new dimension in breast cancer screening.

hen you switch to a 3D mammogram for your next screening appointment, you’ll hardly notice a difference – but our highly skilled radiologists will see things very differently than ever before. The advanced technology of 3D mammography is revolutionizing the fight against breast

cancer. This groundbreaking new diagnostic tool has been shown to increase the early detection of cancer by 35%.* And it has also been proven to reduce the need to have women called back by 38%.* That means fewer follow-up exams, fewer biopsies and less worry for you. In Hampton Roads, 3D mammography is now

available from the Sentara Cancer Network. Our physicians follow the American Cancer Society recommendations for all women to have screening mammograms annually, starting at age 40. To schedule your screening appointment, please go to www.sentara.com/3Dmammogram or call 1-800-SENTARA.
