Get organized Big advantages come from better use of spaces in your home

By Kathy Van Mullekom

Closets are elegant with chandeliers and useful with ample drawers, shelves and racks. Photo courtesy Closets of Virginia

T

here can be lots of wasted space in a house, especially in kitchens and bathrooms where you really need good storage and organization.

Remodeling projects solves some of those issues. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of installing extra shelving or adding cabinets. Maybe a total redo is needed. Other times, it can be a matter of repurposing existing space – for example, transform an entry or laundry area into a mudroom where everyone has a drop zone for backpacks and shoes, suggests Pam Bevelacqua, co-owner of Closets of Virginia, 4039 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg; visit www.closetsofvirginia.com or call 476-6136. “I tell my clients to have zones in their homes to help reign in the chaos,” she says.

“For example, every item in your home should always be in the same spot, therefore when you are looking to wrap a gift, you have a wrapping station where tape, ribbons and paper are all together. “Pantries are fabulous when they are organized -- put everything in glass jars for easier visibility. “I love to design accessory closets with jewelry drawers, belt and scarf racks and shoes that are all together. After getting dressed, opening one closet for only your accessories is a wonderful way to start your day. Implementing new habits is the key to improving a more organized and less stressful life.” continued p 12

Epic Fails and Sweet Successes

It seems that every day on Facebook one of my friends has posted a picture of a success or epic failure from a Pinterest idea. Whether it’s a craft project for their child or a recipe gone bad, the attempts are posted as a warning – what’s pinned isn’t always pretty in real life. If you don’t know Pinterest then you have either been living under a rock or you have a life filled with doing things that others only pin about. Pinterest is an online “pinboard,” a social bookmarking site in which content shared is driven completely by visuals. In fact, you can’t share something unless there is an image involved. What you share is called a “pin” and when you share someone else’s idea it’s called a re-pin. Pins are grouped by topic – women’s fashion, crafts, food & drink, photography, etc. I have spent countless hours pinning what my beautiful southern farmhouse will look like both inside and out. I have the chandeliers and

sconces picked out for each room, and there will be at least 30 bathrooms inside given the number of sinks, clawfoot tubs and marble tile ideas I have re-pinned. I have paint colors and flooring pinned, and my outdoor entertaining spaces with romantic lighting provided by Chinese lanterns that will always be lit and never have to have their batteries replaced. Once I occupy my Pinterest home, I will entertain all my friends. Naturally they will be green with envy over the Cajun grilled shrimp with spicy dipping sauce that I whipped up for a last-minute dinner party, and the chai cheesecake for dessert. I will serve homemade berry lemonade kombucha at the bar along with hors d’oeuvres such as butternut squash fries and baked cream cheese wontons. Of course the butternut squash came straight from my raised garden bed right next to my potted herb garden. Life is pinfabulous!

Snap out of it! That’s what my husband usually says when he sees I have been wandering in Pinterestland for too long. I am brought back to the cold, hard reality of my 16-year-old house that needs to be pressure-washed, the outdoor patio furniture rusting because I used the wrong outdoor paint, the mismatched pillows and the “in” paint from 10 years ago that needs updating in our living room. This is my real life. I know there are others out there. I have seen chocolate molten cupcakes that on Pinterest look Martha Stewart perfect, but in real life are more like the aftermath of a Mount Vesuvius eruption. I have seen the 1970s coffee table from Aunt Margo’s basement that still looks bad even if it was covered with chalk paint. I know the photo collages I attempted to arrange using rulers, painter’s tape and a stud finder still look a little askew, not unlike the family members in them.

20 | Home & Leisure | A Supplement to The Virginia Gazette, Daily Press and Tidewater Review | April 8, 2015

We are not perfect. Maybe I need to pin that.

H

istoric Garden Week in Virginia, April 18-25, invites you to walk through the front doors and garden gates of 250 of the most beautiful private and public

properties in the state.

For 82 years, the annual event has been sponsored by the Garden Club of Virginia and hosted by its 47 member clubs as a way of raising $425 million for the restoration of public gardens throughout Virginia. Club members create more than 2,000 fresh floral arrangements, using material from their gardens, to decorate rooms. Learn more about each of 31 statewide tours at www. VaGardenWeek.org where you can purchase a printed guide or download a copy and buy advance tour tickets,

which start at $15. A statewide pass is $175 per person or $300 for two.

Locally, here’s what you can enjoy during those tours:

Williamsburg On April 21, Williamsburg’s theme, “Love is in the Air,” commemorates the 300th anniversary of the historic Bruton Parish Church, and carries through several nearby homes and gardens, including the Adams Garden and the College of William and Mary President’s House and gardens. “The love story unfolds at each property as you follow two imaginary College of William and Mary students through their courtship, engagement, marriage and wedding reception, honeymoon, children and renewal of vows,” says Terry Buntrock, spokeswoman for the Williamsburg Garden Club, which sponsors the tour. Also, Libbey Oliver, former floral arranger with Colonial Williamsburg and author of “Flowers Are Almost Forever,” and a team of floral experts will do demonstrations throughout the day, and small flower bouquets will be sold. In addition, restaurants in the Merchants Square area will offer

special Garden Week lunches.

Wisteria blooms in the College of William and Mary President’s House garden, open for Garden Week tours April 21. Photo by Ann Efimetz

Newport News – Hampton Six private homes and one garden in the Merry Point Estates neighborhood of Newport News feature views of the James River and iconic Indigo Lake. The tour includes a two-acre naturally wooded garden with the classic look of English boxwoods, azaleas and camellias, as well as a whimsical garden with sculptures fashioned from repurposed ironwork and fireplace grates.

Sponsored by the Huntington and Hampton Roads garden clubs, the April 22 tour also invites you to tour The Gardener’s Workshop flower farm in the Denbigh area of Newport News – www.shoptgw.com – and the 2013-built Pope Chapel at Christopher Newport University, Mariners’ Museum and Peninsula Fine Arts Center. An attractively-priced combo ticket for the Newport News and Williamsburg tours is available online through April 18. ABOVE The Burton Home features extensive gardens and beautiful water views. birds to your yard can be one of the most rewarding pastimes you and your family can explore. Anyone, any age, can do it anytime of the year. “Birdwatching relaxes me, educates my children and students about biology and helps offset my impact on the environment,” says Dan Cristol, professor of ornithology at the College of William and Mary. “It gives me a reason to look around with hope even on the worst days, and makes traveling much more exciting.” Hobbyist birder Shirley Devan agrees. “Birds are charismatic and grab just about everyone’s attention, whether they live in the densest cities or the wildest woods,” says Devan, past president of the Williamsburg Bird Club. She’s also an avid birding photographer, posting her images on her Facebook page for others to enjoy and use as a bird identification guide. To attract birds to your yard, put out a buffet of their favorite foods. In Cristol’s yard in James City County, he offers millet and corn on the ground for sparrows, thrashers, towhees and doves; thistle in a tube feeder for goldfinch and siskin; sunflower in a squirrel-proof feeder for cardinal, titmice, chickadees, nuthatches, house finches; and

suet hanging in the holly tree for warblers, kinglets, woodpeckers, mockingbirds and bluebirds. “My new favorite bird food is Bark Butter, which is essentially spreadable suet,” Devan says.

Red-winged blackbird

Turn your yard into a beautiful birdwatching OASIS By Kathy Van Mullekom

30 | Home & Leisure | A Supplement to The Virginia Gazette, Daily Press and Tidewater Review | April 8, 2015

“I’ve spread it on the bark of an oak tree at the edge of the yard, and observed quite a few species feeding, or trying, to eat it: pine warbler, white-breasted nuthatches, dark-eyed juncos, yellow-rumped warblers, red-bellied woodpeckers, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, downy woodpeckers, eastern bluebirds, tufted titmouse – even American crows and red-winged blackbirds. It’s comical to watch the perching birds try to land on the side of the tree to snatch a bit of bark butter.” Bark Butter, as well as specialty seeds, feeders, nesting boxes, complete feeding stations and nests cameras, can be found at wildlife stores such as Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Monticello Market Place in Williamsburg -- williamsburg.wbu. com – and in Kiln Creek in York County -- yorktown.wbu.com. For beginner bird feeding, use a blend of seeds that is based on black oil sunflowers since that is the seed that will attract the greatest variety of small and large seed eating birds, according to Valerie Copping at the Williamsburg Wild Birds Unlimited. There’s also a Flying Start Combo, an all-in-one feeder with seed, suet,

nuts and fruit for under $15 to see what birds prefer. Birds also need shelter for building nests and protection from predators. Maintain a mass of tangles and vines near your feeder to provide a place for the birds to hang out in safety, suggests Cristol. Plant native vegetation and get rid of as many square feet of lawn

as possible. Bird-beneficial plants he and Devan recommend include figs for late-season fruit, holly berries for late wintertime value, wax myrtle for nesting and berries, as well as tulip poplar and sweetgum trees. Smear a pine cone with peanut butter, then roll it in bird seed. Use twine or ribbon to hang the pine cone birdfeeder in a tree or shrub in your yard.

Local bird clubs are there to help you learn more about birds. The Hampton Roads Bird Club offers free guided bird walks at 7 a.m. the first and third Sunday, meeting monthly behind the ranger station at Newport News Park; meetings with informative speakers and birding events are listed at hamptonroadsbirdclub.org . The Williamsburg Bird Club offers free guided bird walks at 8 a.m. the second Saturday and at 7 a.m. the fourth Saturday monthly at New Quarter Park in upper York County; meetings and field trips are listed at williamsburgbirdclub.org .

indoor flooring options Many people use hardwood throughout their homes, including the kitchen. But hardwood and water don’t mix well, so Ward instead recommends LVT, or luxury vinyl tile, which can look just like hardwood. There are also new ceramic tiles that mimic hardwood. “LVT is the hottest trend right now,” he says. “You can use this material just about anywhere in your home. They are very realistic and can look like tile, stone or hardwood. The tiles can be grouted with an acrylic grout and comes in multiple sizes. The LVT is a bit warmer underfoot versus ceramic or porcelain tile and people just love these products. There are several different manufactures and a couple even come with lifetime warranties. These products need very little upkeep – sweep with a Shaw’s LTV, or luxury vinyl tile, looks just like hardwood. Photo courtesy Eastern Floor Covering

broom and occasionally go over it with a light mist spray and microfiber cloth mop.”

In bedrooms, carpet is still the number one choice with most people. Ward particularly likes the newest HGTV Home by Shaw flooring, and his company is the Peninsula’s authorized dealer.

The HGTV racks we have in our showrooms are picked by HGTV designers and are some of the newest neatest ideas in floor covering! If you look at prefinished hardwood, make sure you look at American-made products, he warns, for good, safe quality. Consider hardwood in fancier rooms of your home – foyer, entryways, formal living and dining rooms and libraries, with custom area rugs on top of the hardwood.

“The wear ratings are high, the warranties are outstanding and the proof is in the pudding -- I personally have HGTV carpet in my home and it cleans easily and wears great,” he says. “The newest in carpet styles is the cu-andloop pattern and you can really dress a room up with the new patterns.”

Shaw carpets makes everything cozy and comfy. Photo courtesy Eastern Floor Covering

Bamboo is getting more and more desirable, he adds. “Bamboo is a super hard floor that wears great, and is much easier on the environment.”

Dressing up concrete Concrete floors in garages, porches, basements or sunrooms can look just as good as the major rooms in your home, thanks to durable, decorative finishes done by Allan Auvil at Tidewater Interiors. The company has locations at 13320 Warwick Blvd., Newport News and Monticello Marketplace Shoppes in Williamsburg; visit www.tidewaterinteriors.com or call 872-8666 in Newport News or 229-3601 in Williamsburg. For garages, Tidewater Interiors does a one-day process with a diamond grind to prep the floor and then a four-step system that includes a decorative chip application and a decorative slip-resistant finish and clear coat.

A custom garage floor adds to a home’s overall good looks. Photo courtesy Tidewater Interiors

For basements, there are several looks that can be done but the most common is a stained and/or polished concrete finish that brings color to the floor and highlights natural graining in the concrete. For outdoor applications such as patios, pool decks and driveways, there are more staining options. And, the company can rejuvenate worn, neglected stamped concrete by restoring its color and appearance. Before garage. Tire tracks add to the ugliness of a concrete garage floor. Mellow marsala the new top color on the block

PAINT Whether you opt for a lighter or deeper shade of Marsala, it’s right at home in both the living room and dining room. It’s deep enough for a bedroom, unlike a bright red. Relaxed and not too vibrant, it makes a good option for an accent wall behind the bed. It’s also a natural in the dining room, where red has fallen out of favor but where we could use an infusion of richness and warmth. (Marsala even adds lushness to table linens.) It’s a natural with cream and ivory shades, and pairs elegantly with gold, green and ochre.

Last year, Pantone’s color of the year was Radiant Orchid. We saw the lush hue pop up everywhere from websites to commercials, even used for accessories like cellphone and tablet cases. Orchid handbags, scarves and blouses suddenly multiplied. But there’s a new “hot” color in town. Welcome Marsala, Pantone’s top pick for 2015. Marsala is an earthy, relaxed red with all the mellowness of the wine it’s named for. It’s decidedly easier to incorporate into both fashion and interior design than orchid, and works well year-found in fashion, home goods and decor. This versatile shade also blends beautifully many other colors.

UPHOLSTERY Without question, Marsala is a color you can live with on sofas and chairs. Whether used as an overall or accent color in upholstery, Marsala can go the distance. Its richness is evocative of more formal settings, yet it’s a relaxed, livable color that can adapt to most any style. What’s not to love about a Marsala velvetcovered Bergere chair inviting you to linger with a book?

Marsala is an earthy, relaxed red with all the mellowness of the wine it’s named for.

ACCESSORIES If this color is too deep or bold for your taste, a variety of accessories are available that will give you a touch of Marsala without too much of a good thing. A comforter set can bring a rich red tone to the bedroom. Add a few other accessories that incorporate Marsala, to tie the comforter to the rest of the room. If you have a piece of furniture that needs repainting or you’re looking for a project, try coating a piece with Marsala and adding bold metallic hardware. An old dresser would make a nice entryway console and feel updated in Marsala. For a bolder approach, try a Marsala-hued rug or wallpaper. If you’re adventurous, try reupholstering your dining chairs. Not so much? Simply add some Marsala throw pillows or upholstered ottomans. In the kitchen, you could even incorporate Marsala in dishware, napkins, placemats or glasses.
