DUNHAM (407-43) LIVING SPACE: 1,965 SF

The covered porch, along with large corner windows adds charm to the Dunham (407-43). An added feature to further enhance the looks of this home is the ability to put French doors in place of the single entry door. This touch always makes a home look more gracious and inviting.

Dunham

Nearly all the rooms in this home are vaulted and the entry is no exception. On the right side of the entry is the master suite. The two large corner windows along with a coffered vault in the same area enhance the master suite and give it an air of grandeur. The uniquely shaped walk-in closet is separated from the suite with its own door. The bathroom, adjacent to the closet, contains a shower and stool, while the sink with plenty of counter space runs along the wall in the main suite. Nearly half of the Dunham’s 1,965 square feet is an open Great Room concept. A large hearth with a wood stove in located in the middle between the living and dining rooms. This gives both rooms the benefit of the warm and the ascetic value also. The dining room has two extremely huge windows, great for enjoying the morning sun. A set of patio doors open onto the rear concrete patio. The kitchen overlooks the backyard. The vaulted kitchen is U-shaped. For ease of use, the freezer has been placed beside the refrigerator. Behind folding doors are the forced air unit and the water heater. A vaulted game room creates an entertainment area for the family. A theater room, or a computer room, or a hobby room, or any combination of these various ideas would be fun for all concerned. If, at a future date, another bedroom were needed, a closet could be added. This would make a great guestroom as the bathroom is handy and the suite would have patio doors that open onto the rear patio. Between the game room and bedroom 2 is a full bath with a tub. On the opposite hall wall from the bath is a huge linen closet, backing up to the pantry on the other side. Just as the pantry is handy to the garage so is the linen closet handy to the washer/dryer. At the end of the hall is the door to the garage. The utility for this home is located out in the garage as is an extra refrigerator and freezer. The two-car garage has workbench that runs nearly the full length of one side.

bathroom can revive the whole space. Have some fun with an accent wall — yellows and golds will warm it up, greens and blues are calming; and if you want bold color, Radiant Orchid, Pantone’s 2014 color of the year, is a bright hue that will really pop. Striped patterns are also a great option — they’re modern and on-trend, plus provide an easy fix for smaller areas. You can use the direction of the stripes to make the space seem larger: horizontal stripes will make it look wider, whereas vertical stripes will elongate walls and give the illusion of a higher ceiling.

Make a statement with the mirror To add character to your bathroom with minimal effort, install a unique, eyecatching mirror. Framed styles are a great option, but they can be pricey. However, a little ingenuity can deliver the look you want for a fraction of the cost. Check out a local flea market or thrift store to see if you can find a distinctive picture frame that could be transformed into a mirror. To make it really stand out, look for finds with unconventional shapes, finishes or colors.

Declutter and organize shelves and other spaces

Say ‘bye bye’ to bathroom remodeling blues with 5 budget-friendly tips

Beautifying your bathroom sounds exciting but oftentimes renovation plans begin with good intentions and end up a long, costly nightmare. The nationalaverage cost for a bathroom remodel is $10,142, according to the Cost Guide from HomeAdvisor.com. That’s a hefty investment but one that can easily be reduced with a simple refresh of the space instead. Here are five costeffective updates you can make to your bathroom in as little as a weekend.

Enhance walls with color and pattern You don’t need to re-paint an entire room to alter its overall appearance. Adding a color or design to just one wall in the

Looking for an easy way to switch up the decor in your bathroom? Shelf liner, in addition to its traditional uses in kitchens and closets, can be both fun and functional for the bath. Start by cleaning out the space, including cabinets, drawers, the sink top, under the sink and any other storage areas. Then cut and install a nonadhesive shelf liner like Duck brand Smooth Top Easy Liner, which is available in an array of colors and prints to complement various color schemes or styles. It offers a smooth top and grip bottom for easy sliding of items, plus the smooth surface catches messes and spills as they happen to make clean-up a breeze (it’s even machinewashable for larger messes and spills). And, because it’s non-adhesive, you can quickly and easily switch it out when the decorating bug hits again.

Brighten up the space with new light fixtures Lighting in any room of the house can affect the way the overall design of the room is received. When done right, fixtures Continues on page 11

Avoid a

blizzard of bills this season with these energy efficiency tips

Fall’s cooler temperatures are on their way, if you haven’t felt them already. And when you feel that first chill, your natural response is to reach for the thermostat. Many people do the same thing, sacrificing energy efficiency in the name of comfort. But you can have both. Here are five ways you can conserve energy in your home now and throughout the cooler months ahead without sacrificing comfort.

Keep the cold out and the warm in. Air that leaks through your home’s envelope - the outer walls,

windows, doors, and other openings - wastes lots of energy and money. In fact, sealing air leaks and adding insulation can provide up to a 20 percent savings on your heating bills. Simple fixes include installing weather stripping on doors and caulking around windows, while bigger jobs might include sealing leaks and adding insulation in your attic.

Heat your home efficiently. As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Maintaining your HVAC system can have a big impact on your utility bills this winter — and your comfort. Check your furnace’s air filter once a month, especially during the heavy-use months of winter. If it’s dirty, clean or replace it. At a minimum, clean or replace it every three months. A dirty filter slows air flow, making the system work harder which wastes energy. A clean filter helps prevent dust and dirt build-up in your system, which can lead to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure and replacement. Also consider a yearly professional tune-up of your HVAC system. Lastly, sealing and insulating air ducts can improve your HVAC system’s efficiency by as much as 20 percent. Continues on page 12

fit in seamlessly; when done wrong, they stick out and distract from other decor. The bathroom light is a great opportunity to inject flair and style into your space with ease — plus provide the illumination you need to get ready for the day. Switch out older ceiling lights with trendy lanterns or an inexpensive, vintage chandelier. For vanities, try sconces with unexpected shades or use tall tabletop lamps instead of wall-mounted styles for added pizzazz.

bathroom. Look for options that complement your style to add personality and bring the whole room together. And, don’t forget behind the shower curtain — although bath mats often serve the utilitarian purpose of providing a skid-resistant surface for safer footing, they can add a touch of style, too. Duck brand offers several designer bath mats that are not only soft and comfortable, but can also add a bit of pop to otherwise plain surfaces. Don’t ignore the bathroom’s old appearance over the fear of high renovation costs. A few easy-to-do — and seemingly inexpensive — changes can go a long way in transforming your bathroom’s style from drab to fab.

Invest in energy-efficient appliances. Every appliance comes with two price tags: the purchase price and the cost of operating the product. By selecting ENERGY STAR certified appliances, you can save up to 35 percent on energy costs, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Clothes dryers are the newest category, and represent significant savings opportunities. One of the most advanced units available this fall is LG’s EcoHybrid dryer, the first on the market to use heat pump technology to recycle heat, reduce energy usage, and ultimately save you money. This technology works with select cycles to reduce your energy consumption by as much as 50 percent when compared to conventional dryers. This dryer has earned the EPA’s 2014 Energy Star Emerging Technology Award, which recognizes the most innovative technologies that reduce energy use and help consumers reduce their carbon footprint.

Make bright choices for lighting. Many of us have heard about the outstanding energy efficiency provided by LED lighting. But LED

bulbs are not all the same when it comes to performance. To get the energy efficiency and performance you expect, look for the ENERGY STAR label. LED bulbs that earn the label are independently certified to ensure they deliver on brightness and color, and shine light where you want it. And, of course, don’t forget to turn the lights off when you leave the room.

Save energy while enjoying football season. You can even save energy and money while sitting on the couch! Major brands like LG offer ENERGY STAR “Most Efficient” designated HDTVs that can really help make a difference on your energy bill — especially during the season when you’ll be spending plenty of time watching your favorite teams. Following these simple tips helps you save energy and money, while addressing climate change. LG Electronics, a 2014 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year, invites consumers

to learn more ways you can be more efficient and share your approach to saving energy by taking the LG ENERGY STAR Pledge.

pumpkins

Autumn is ripe with vibrant colors and scenery. One of the more vivid sights this time of year are the bright, orange pumpkins that adorn walkways and front porches of homes and businesses. Not only are pumpkins ideal for decorating, but they’re also great to eat.

Some people who plan to carve jack-olanterns mistakenly believe the same type of pumpkin can be used in their favorite recipes. But what carving pumpkins have in visual flair, they usually lack in flavor and substance. Instead, would-be pumpkin cookers should look to other varieties if they plan to serve pumpkin on the menu.

Select a pumpkin as you would any other type of squash. Look for a firm pumpkin with no bruises or soft spots. The pumpkin also should have a deep orange color. Store pumpkins in a cool, dark area until ready for use to prolong freshness. Wash the exterior of the pumpkin in cool water before cutting to remove any dirt and bacteria on the surface of the pumpkin so it won’t be transferred to the pulp of the pumpkin.

Slice the pumpkin in half and remove the seeds and any stringy material. Rinse and save the seeds for planting or roasting. Put the pumpkin pieces in the microwave to cook or you can steam or bake them until the pulp is soft and the pumpkin falls off of the skin. Cool the pumpkins, then puree the pulp until it’s smooth. You may want to strain the pureed pumpkin with a cheese cloth to remove any excess water before using in a pie recipe. Baked breads may benefit from the extra moisture. Pumpkins are a great source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium, copper, manganese, vitamin E, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. They’re also low in fat and calories. Pumpkin puree can replace the oil in some baking recipes, much as you would use applesauce. TF14A590

Key to cooking with

Pumpkins are available from September through December, but they peak in October. Many smaller pumpkins are better and sweeter for cooking. Mini pumpkins, sugar, cheese, and pie pumpkins are varieties commonly used in recipes. The big jack-olantern pumpkins have stringy, watery flesh and will provide little to no pulp for cooking.
