2017 TRENDS

By Brandy Centolanza

Paul Harrison Photography

From food to flowers to favors to fun, what will be in style this wedding season? “Weddings are becoming more intimate, and our couples are inviting those guests that are very close to them currently, or have watched them grow up,” shares Kelly Coronel, an event and wedding planner with Inspired Events By Kelly. “They are not wanting the large wedding in regard to guest counts, but want to spend time with all their guests throughout the evening.” Arlene Aitken-Williams with Morrison Flowers & Gifts agrees. 6

“The new wedding tells the ‘story’ of the bride and groom,” she says. “They may choose to incorporate their favorite hobbies, cultural customs, ethnic food, or religious tradition into their ceremony and reception. Trends have an influence, but should be a small part of the story.” In terms of music, “We are seeing brides moving away from traditional wedding ceremony music and going with different arrangements of current popular music,” says Jeff Bristow, chief entertainment officer with Colonial DJs. “The Piano Guys arrangement of the Christina Perri song ‘A Thousand Years’ has become popular as the bride’s processional music. We also see requests for Vitamin String Quartet, a string quartet that plays everything from Cold Play to Guns N’ Roses to Lady Gaga.” williamsburg bride 2017

Regarding floral arrangements, “We have seen bouquets, floral crowns, and arrangements with a Bohemian theme, very natural, and with lots of silver greens, grow in popularity,” notes Aitken-Williams. “Arches continue to be a favorite with brides, as many ceremonies are not taking place in churches, but at a venue. The arches provide structure and beauty for the ceremony, a beautiful backdrop for pictures, and are decorated with flowers, and sometimes fabric.” At the reception, a farm-to-table concept with locally grown fruits, vegetables, and flowers, is popular. Family style or buffet style meals are preferred to a more formal sit-down reception.

wedding cakes and hello to mini desserts, a variety of small wedding cakes, and late night snacks such as sliders, chicken strips, and fries,” says Coronel.

And what about the favors as a way to honor and thank the guests in attendance? “Couples are providing favors, but those that their guests will appreciate,” says Coronel. “I have had a couple that created their own spice and bottled and labeled it for their guests. With our weddings, we see more that our couples are donating to a favorite charity on behalf of a family member or guests.”

“We are not seeing as many plated dinners,” points out Coronel. “Brides are still loving the long farm tables as well as creating the bistro atmosphere with high cocktail tables, which allows the guests to enjoy the bar, food stations, and dancing.” In addition, when it comes to food later in the evening, it’s “goodbye to candy bars and large

Martha Brickey & Tim Pandajis May 7, 2016 CEREMONY St. George Tucker House, Colonial Williamsburg and Ford’s Colony Country Club RECEPTION Ford’s Colony Country Club FLOWERS Morrison’s Flowers CATERING Colonial Williamsburg and Ford’s Colony Country Club CAKE/SWEETS CakeAlicious ACCOMMODATIONS The Marriott Manor Club at Ford’s Colony, The Williamsburg Inn THE PERFECT PLACE Martha says, “We are both HUGE history buffs, and Tim especially loves Revolutionary War history. Additionally, Colonial Williamsburg has been a special place for my family. We take yearly family vacations to Colonial Williamsburg and stay in the historic area. Since many of my family members have passed away, it was sentimental to get married in a place with so many wonderful memories.” Martha says, “We decided to do two ceremonies: the first in Colonial Williamsburg and the second at Ford’s Colony Country Club. In Colonial Williamsburg, we did a short ceremony where we exchanged vows that we had written to one another in front of our immediate families and wedding party. It was intimate, romantic, and simply perfect.” Photography by Katherine Sparks Photography

Anna Cordle & Mitchell Harry September 10, 2016 CHURCH Bruton Parish Episcopal Church RECEPTION (VENUE & FOOD) The Williamsburg Inn/Colonial Williamsburg FLOWERS Williamsburg Floral MUSIC Colonial DJ’s HAIR & MAKEUP The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg DRESS All the Rage, Virginia Beach location A COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG WEDDING FROM START TO FINISH The groom’s family rented Providence Hall House. This beautiful historic landmark was used, not only to house the groom’s family and friends, but also served as the venue for the rehearsal dinner. Our wedding ceremony was held at Bruton Parish Church. As we came out of the Church, we were driven in a horse-drawn carriage-- the Queen’s Carriage (which Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip rode in during their visit to CW in 2007). The carriage drove us to the Williamsburg Inn, where we held our reception in the East Lounge. We are graduates of the University of Virginia and had Colonial Williamsburg’s young Thomas Jefferson give our wedding toast! The groom’s cake was UVA-themed, and the favors were Thomas Jefferson’s favorite cookie, the Savoy, baked by the pastry chefs at The Williamsburg Inn (who also made our cakes).

Historic weddings The rich history of the Greater Williamsburg area provides a nice backdrop for wedding locales. There are plenty of options throughout Colonial Williamsburg to host your wedding event, whether it’s the rehearsal dinner, a bridesmaids’ luncheon, or the ceremony or reception itself. The Williamsburg Inn and The Williamsburg Woodlands are popular choices. Betrothed couples like “the Rockefeller Complex, which includes the Oval Garden and Fountain Garden and Terrace,” says Michele DeRosa, senior conference services manager for the Colonial 16

Williamsburg hotels. “The complex is located between The Williamsburg Inn and The Williamsburg Lodge. The Regency Room in the Williamsburg Inn is also very popular. The room is beautifully appointed, has windows on all four sides; a built-in dance floor; and also includes a half circle terrace, which overlooks the grounds of The Williamsburg Inn.” The College of William &Mary is also steeped in history, and alumni or those affiliated with the college can book a wedding any day of the week at The Wren Chapel. After all, The Crim Dell Bridge is considered to be one of the most romantic spots on campus, a place where couples are known for getting engaged, so why not consider the college for your ceremony? williamsburg bride 2017

The history museums at Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown can also host private events and special occasions, including weddings. According to the JamestownYorktown Foundation’s website (www.historyisfun. org), “the museums offer unique settings and experiences for a memorable and successful afterhours event, whether it entails an evening reception in Jamestown Settlement’s rotunda, dinner in the re-created 1610-14 fort, [or] cocktails on the ships’ pier overlooking the James River. At the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, evening events can be held in re-created Continental Army encampment or on a patio under the stars.” There is also the Williamsburg Winery and the Boxwood Inn in the Lee Hall area of Newport News. The Boxwood Inn is a beautiful, historic bed and breakfast known for accommodating special events such as weddings, anniversaries and other celebrations. Legacy Hall in New Town can also be rented out for weddings as well as the Williamsburg Community Building on N. Boundary Street. The Williamsburg williamsburg bride 2017

Community Building is a popular spot for weddings due in part to its proximity to downtown Williamsburg and the colonial area, and is even featured on the wedding website www.theknot.com as a wedding venue option. When it comes to historic weddings “Couples are looking for beautiful details, whether it be a manicured garden, or architectural details as a backdrop to enhance their wedding vision,” says DeRosa. “Colonial Williamsburg provides those details and much more. COLOR TRENDS

By Brandy Centolanza

Katherine Sparks Photography

The color scheme of any wedding is important: from flowers to dresses to table linens, whatever hue you choose makes the event. Pantone’s colors for 2016 were Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue, and you can expect more of the same this year. “Many brides chose the rose quartz and mixed it with golds, silver, or pearls,” says Arlene AitkenWilliams with Morrison Flowers & Gifts on Jamestown Road. “Mercury silver and gold, or rose quartz 32

containers were chosen to accent this palette. Light pastels were also popular, as were succulents and silver greens.” Among the trends for Pantone wedding colors for 2017 are Niagara Blue, Primrose Yellow, Lapis Blue, Flame, Island Paradise, Pale Dogwood, Greenery, Pink Yarrow, Kale, and Hazelnut. “The colors for 2017 are staying in the hues of the 2016 colors of Serenity Blue and Rose Quartz,” shares Kelly Coronel, an event and wedding planner with Inspired Events By Kelly. “The colors for 2017 evoke emotions of comfort with the blues and pinks to feelings of nature with the yellows, reds, and greens.” williamsburg bride 2017

Adds Aitken-Williams: “An organic look in pale peach, pink, ivory and silver greens is a classic choice.” Nearly every aspect of a wedding is accented by color: the invitations; the bridal bouquets, corsages, and boutonnieres; wedding attire; the bride’s makeup; lighting; reception décor; wedding favors; the cake; and a grand exit.

2017 PANTONE COLORS

NIAGARA BLUE

PRIMROSE YELLOW “Color is incorporated into weddings from gift registries, bridesmaid dresses, and themed color palettes,” says Coronel. “All colors can be incorporated into either the linens, stationary, and flowers as well as the bridesmaids’ dresses, and ties or socks for the groomsmen.” When it comes to choosing the colors for your wedding, consider your wedding location, as well as which color combinations best suit your personality and tastes, the theme or mood of your wedding, and the time of year. Avoid overdoing it with too many colors or patterns. Just keep it simple. Guests should also avoid wearing white, cream, or similar shades. “I do not recommend using either yellow or green lighting as guests do not photograph well in these colors,” Coronel adds.

Rehearsal dinners The prelude to a couple’s big day is the rehearsal dinner, a chance for friends and family to come together, mingle, and share in the joy of what’s in store for the bride and groom. Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is planned by the groom and his parents, though the bride and groom or someone else close to them may also choose to host the event. “Rehearsal dinners are about the groom, and what he likes and enjoys,” says Kelly Coronel, an event and wedding planner with Inspired Events By Kelly. 36

By Brandy Centolanza

“This is his and his parents’ night to entertain for the wedding. Restaurants are a good location for the dinner, and typically the food is a favorite of the groom.” Most rehearsal dinners are held at restaurants or in banquet halls, usually for a smaller group than the wedding. Guests include the bride and groom’s immediate family, the bridal party, close friends and relatives, and, perhaps, the wedding officiant and other ceremony participants. While foodie types might choose a more elegant, multi-course dinner for their guests or prefer to serve traditional or cultural foods of their families, others are opting for a more casual meal. williamsburg bride 2017

“We are seeing less formal approaches to rehearsal dinners these days, and guests are less often requesting to have seat cards with table assignments,” says Jessica Smith, director of sales and marketing for Opus 9 Steakhouse in Williamsburg and Schlesinger’s Steakhouse in Newport News. “If this is the case for you, consider at least assigning the bride and groom seats with cards or flowers so your guests know where not to sit. Guests like direction and feel more at ease if they know where they can sit or not sit without asking.” Other rehearsal dinner options are dining al fresco on a private patio, or having a barbeque. Additional trends include incorporating signature drinks and desserts. “We still see guests personalizing menus and offering champagne toasts, though the traditional groom’s cake is not as common as it once was,” says Smith. The event might also include lots of toasts, particularly from the parents of the bride and groom as well as the bride and groom themselves. A short presentation or video of the couple’s courtship is also something to consider. And, of course, so is the budget. “When calling a prospective venue, know the maximum number that your party could be, as well as the number of guests in the bridal party,” says Smith. “Expect venues to have room rental fees or food and beverage minimums with regard to reserving private space. Know your per person budget inclusive of tax and gratuity before calling so the venue will know how they can best assist you.”

GOODMAN & SONS Specialty: Our specialty is bridal where we offer a wide variety of branded rings and branded diamonds such as Hearts on Fire, Forevermark, Forevermark Black Label, and Fire & Ice. We hand pick all of our loose diamonds to ensure we get the best diamonds for our customers to choose from. We also specialize in in-house repairs and appraisals. What makes you unique: Goodman & Sons is unique in that we are a local, 3rd generation Hampton Roads business. Our vision is based around our family tradition: “We aspire to be every family’s most trusted jeweler for generations to come.” Today, we have our 3rd generation helping some of our customers’ 3rd generation. We started back in 1947 as a engraving shop making name tags for the local servicemen at Fort Eustis and Langley Air Force base. We evolved over the years to become the full service jewelry shop that we are today, 68 years later. We currently employ four graduate gemologists and two classically trained watchmakers, although we don’t practice much

watchmaking anymore. All of our sales team goes through Diamontology training to ensure we provide you knowledgeable service. Coming in 2017: Newly expanded bridal collections from Forevermark. Forevermark is launching their new collection, Black Label, which we are very proud to carry. We’ve also expended our fashion with new, trendy brands such as; Gabriel & Co., Doves, Shy Creations & Chimento. Trends: Yellow and rose gold are coming back into style, along with fancy shaped diamonds. We also see layering is a huge trend right now with jewelry. We have many lines in store that offer great layering looks for necklaces, bracelets and rings! 4640-11A Monticello Ave., Williamsburg 757-229-5388 2018 Coliseum Drive, Hampton 757-838-2328 goodmanandsons.com Facebook, Instagram

Katherine Patrick & Tyler Moore August 20, 2016 CEREMONY AND RECEPTION VENUE Kiskiack Golf Club DJ Colonial DJs FLOWERS Morrison’s Flowers & Gifts ENGAGEMENT RING Boyer’s A HIDDEN GEM Tyler and I met in the employee lunch line at Great Wolf Lodge in 2009 and instantly knew we had an unbreakable connection ever since. I was a first time Lifeguard and he had been working as a Retail (Arcade) Lead. After 6 (long) years of dating Tyler finally popped the question on my birthday in October of 2015! Our photographer captured the beauty Kiskiack has to offer and the love that filled our day! This venue has to be a hidden gem within the Williamsburg area! They’re able to accommodate both the ceremony and reception (even rehearsal and rehearsal dinner) all while offering amazing staff, facility, and views! On top of that, Morrison’s Flowers & Gifts brought our pastel wedding vision to life with their beautiful arrangements!
