NUTRITION and AGING go hand-in-hand Nutrition is important for people of all ages, but it’s especially important for men and women over the age of 50, who can dramatically improve their quality of life by eating a well-balanced diet filled with vitamins and nutrients. Though that may seem like common sense, research has shown that men and women in this age group, who are often referred to as “Baby Boomers,” are not necessarily as healthy as they may seem. While the baby boomer generation, which is generally regarded as those people born between 1946 and 1964, boasts longer life expectancies than any generation that came before them, some of that can likely be chalked up to advancements in medical care, including a
booming pharmaceutical industry that seemingly has an antidote to every ailment. But a 2013 study from researchers at the West Virginia University School of Medicine found that baby boomers are less healthy than the generation that immediately preceded them, tending to be more likely to have higher levels of hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. While that news might be sobering, it’s never too late for men and women over 50 to start eating healthier diets, which can reduce their risk of a wide range of ailments, including heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis. The following are a few ways men and women over 50 can alter their diets so their bodies are getting what they need to live long and healthy lives well into their golden years. As is always the case, men and women should discuss any potential changes to their diets with their physicians to ensure the changes will be both effective and healthy. Balance your diet. Kids hear of the benefits of a balanced diet seemingly from the moment they enter a classroom for the first time, but many adults fail to heed that basic advice as they get further and further away from kindergarten. When changing your diet, be sure to include plenty of protein and carbohydrates. Protein maintains and rebuilds muscles, which is especially important for aging men and women who might find themselves unable to keep up with the physical demands of everyday life as well as they used to. Including ample low-fat protein, which can be found in fish, eggs and low-fat dairy among other foods, will aid in muscle recovery, benefitting aging athletes as well as those men and women over 50 who recently
started exercising as a means to regaining their physical fitness. A diet lacking in sufficient protein can contribute to muscle deterioration, arthritis and even organ failure, so it’s important for men and women to prioritize including protein in their diets. Carbohydrates are also an important part of a balanced diet, as they are a great source of energy that can help men and women stay active well past the age of 50. Carbohydrates found in fruits, grains and vegetables are the most beneficial, as these contain valuable vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Don’t denounce dairy. Dairy is a great source of calcium, which promotes strong bones and teeth. Men and women over the age of 50 want their bones to be as strong as possible because aging is one of the strongest risk factors for osteoporosis, a potentially debilitating medical condition in which loss of tissue causes bones to become brittle and fragile. Vitamin D is necessary to effectively absorb calcium, and vitamin D can be found in certain dairy products, including pasture-raised eggs and grass-fed cow’s milk, and can be generated when men and women get enough sunlight. Other healthy sources of vitamin D include salmon, light tuna packed in oil, sardines, and sun-grown mushrooms. Cut back on sodium intake. Cutting back on sodium intake can be very beneficial, especially for men and women over the age of 50, who are at greater risk of diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease. But cutting back on sodium intake takes more than just throwing the salt shaker away. Processed foods, soups, canned goods, salad dressings, condiments such as mustard and ketchup, and breakfast cereals are just a few of the many products that may contain alarming amounts of sodium. That’s important to note, as excess sodium increases blood pressure by holding excess fluid in the body. That excess fluid puts an added burden on the heart, potentially increasing a person’s risk of stroke, heart failure, osteoporosis, cancer, and kidney disease. The problem with cutting back on sodium is that salt is so often relied on to make foods taste better, and many people find salt-free foods bland. But the rewards of reducing sodium intake are so significant that it’s worth making the adjustment, especially for men and women over the age of 50. No one is too old or too young to embrace a nutritious diet. But men and women over the age of 50 are in a unique position to vastly improve their quality of life by adopting a low-sodium diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals. LP143943

Venous Disease What are venous disease, venous reflux, and symptomatic varicose veins? Venous reflux disease, also known as venous insufficiency, is a medical condition affecting normal outflow circulation of blood in the lower extremities. Valves contained within veins normally facilitate blood emptying from the legs towards the heart. In the case of venous reflux, these valves no longer function properly, allowing blood to pool in the legs. This produces back pressure and congestion, otherwise known as venous hypertension. Venous reflux and venous hypertension can cause swelling, aching, heavy legs to serious recurring ulcers that can be limb threatening. Varicose veins are often the first recognition of venous disease, but when absent, can frequently result in delayed diagnosis. Varicose veins are enlarged surface veins that become engorged over time as a result of valve failure.
What are the causes? The underlying problem, common to most of these patients, is venous valvular incompetence. Valves are present in the heart and veins to facilitate unidirectional flow that maintains efficient circulation. Incompetent valves in the heart are responsible for regurgitant flow, which can lead to dilated heart chambers that can ultimately impair heart muscle contraction. Veins, responsible for returning blood that has been distributed to the body, dilate in response to incompetent valves. This impairs venous function, delaying return of blood to the heart and overloading the tissues in the leg which causes congestion. Heredity, female gender, pregnancy, weight, and professions requiring prolonged standing and sitting are contributing factors.
and How It Can Affect You
interpreted as another problem. The face of venous disease can be a 30-year old woman, thin and healthy appearing, with a history of multiple pregnancies. It can also be a 30-year old man with four years of recurrent ankle ulcers and severe skin changes. And, then again, it can be a 61-year old woman with a 10 year history of leg pain misdiagnosed as neuropathy and fibromyalgia. In some cases, varicose veins are dismissed as a cosmetic problem.
describe pain per say, the discomfort can be fairly disturbing and interfere with desired activities, including exercise, work responsibilities, and keeping up at family events. People in their fifties and older occasionally dismiss the symptoms to aging and ‘slowing down.’ Other features of venous reflux disease include burning and itching skin of the lower extremities, leg swelling (edema), skin changes including darkening and thickening, and ulcers usually at the ankle level.
Venous insufficiency can significantly impact lifestyle. Occupations that require long periods of standing or sitting, thought to contribute to the development of venous reflux, provoke intolerable symptoms of aching fatigue, throbbing, swelling, skin changes, and ultimately painful ulcers. Salesmen, teachers, hairdressers, nurses, and shipyard workers are among those affected. Market research indicates that over 2 million workdays are lost annually in the US and $1.4 billion is spent each year on this common medical condition.
What are the answers? Recommendations are generated based on individual case histories, physical exam, and usually duplex ultrasound evaluation. ❖
Of the 25 million Americans with venous insufficiency, approximately 7 million exhibit serious symptoms such as swelling, skin changes, and venous ulcers. It is estimated that 72% of women and 42% of men will experience varicose veins by the time they are 60.
Who is affected?
What are the symptoms?
Venous disease occurs twice as often as coronary artery disease and five times more often than peripheral artery disease in the United States. Venous disease is quickly recognized in patients with large protruding varicose veins, but in their absence, venous disease can be overlooked and
Varicose veins often herald the presence of venous reflux. Legs can ache and fatigue due to reflux without the obvious bulging veins. Discomfort usually worsens toward the end of the day. Sometimes, restless and aching legs at night are the predominant complaint. Although few patients

To better serve families, we have a close affiliation with Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, also located in Hampton, Virginia. Hampton Memorial Gardens was started in April of 1963. In 1968 we changed the name of the cemetery to Hampton-Veterans Memorial Gardens. The reason we changed the name was the closing of the Hampton National Cemetery down in Phoebus. Hampton Memorial Gardens is situated on 66 acres, replete with well-kept lawns and a variety of established trees, providing a quiet place to honor your loved one. Adding to our appeal, our garden includes a natural brook with a bridge, a Four Apostles feature and a beautiful Jesus feature that sits in the center of our new Commonwealth Circle Estates.
We are recognized as the premier veterans’ cemetery in the area and we strive to serve the military members of our community, both active duty and retired. Our cemetery includes a Fallen Soldiers monument and a Field of Honor dedicated to military personnel, firefighters, and police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. If you would like a tour of our grounds, please contact one of our family service counselors.

In 2003, an 86-year-old man unintentionally killed 10 people and injured more than 70 when he drove his car through a crowded farmer’s market in Santa Monica, Calif. In 2010, a 72-year-old Connecticut man faced vehicular manslaughter charges for allegedly striking and killing a motorcyclist. In 2012, an elderly man in Buffalo, N.Y. caused an accident resulting in three fatalities when he traveled in the wrong direction on the New York State Thruway. Very frequently the local news is peppered with reports of elderly drivers causing serious accidents. Some wonder if more stringent requirements for elderly drivers would help the situation. Thirty-three states presently have legislation in place to ensure drivers can retain driving privileges once they reach a certain age. It’s important to note that, according to the National Safety Council, drivers over the age of 75 account for only 3.3 percent of accidents in the United States. Drivers age 25 to 34 account for the largest number of accidents, at nearly 20 percent. Some argue that these findings do not paint an accurate picture because senior drivers spend far less time behind the wheel and log fewer miles than younger drivers, reducing the chance for accidents. Though the debate about older drivers figures to remain a hot topic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that aging can affect drivers in a number of ways. The physical and mental changes that accompany aging can have a profound impact on a person’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Reaction times may be slower, hearing and vision loss may affect driver awareness, loss of muscle strength and flexibility can make steering more difficult and medication can impair focus and/or concentration. Many senior centers and organizations offer programs that allow elderly drivers to brush up on their skills behind the wheel. Drivers also can contact their insurance companies to see if there are any sponsored classes they can take to reassess their skills and possibly lower their insurance premiums. AAA offers a Driver Improvement course and suggests seniors find a car they can safely and comfortably operate. AAA also offers Roadwise Rx, a free online tool that provides confidential, individualized feedback about medication side effects and how these drugs may impact drivers on the road. AARP also offers a Driver Safety course. It also is important that senior drivers and their families familiarize themselves with local legislation to determine if driver refresher courses or retesting are necessary for older drivers to remain behind the wheel. AGING CAN IMPAIR DRIVING ABILITY
The number of drivers 70 and over is predicted to triple in North America over the next 20 years. Research indicates that the older a person is, the higher the risk of driver accident or fatality. The risk posed by older drivers and the inevitable increase in older drivers on the road over the next two decades has sparked debate as to whether or not such drivers should be reexamined to ensure safety on the road?

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during which the heart can beat too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. you needed $25,000 for an unexpected expense, would you raid your retirement account, rack up some extra bonus points on a high-rate, high-payment credit card or put the homestead at risk with a normal mortgage? We are living in some uncertain times. You never know when you are going to be hit with the need for a major home improvement, car repair, medical or family emergency – and since a 62- year-old in good health can expect to live another 20 to 40 years, it’s more important than ever to make your retirement funds last. Just think, the cost of a gallon for both gas and milk is three times more now than 20 years ago; it will be at least three times as much in another 20 years. It’s time for you to have a backup plan for future needs – The Get Smart Life Time Line!
If
‘Better Than a Traditional Home Equity Line’ Senior homeowners can now sign up for the New Improved FHA HECM Lifetime Credit Line, a HUD program that allows a two-tier credit line and has some key factors, making it much better than a traditional Home equity line. You always have the option to make monthly payments, but you are never required to. So if you borrow $25,000, you can make low monthly interest payments; you can pay extra to pay down the balance, or you can choose to never make any payments at all. It’s all up to you and your budget at the time. If you get a lifetime line and just keep it unused in reserve, there are no monthly or annual fees, and you never have to worry about needing the lender to agree to renew it after a couple years. The Get Smart Lifetime Line cannot be shut down by the lender regardless of a loss of income, an unexpected hit to your credit scores, a drop in your home value, or even a loss of a spouse. You just have to live in your home, keep your real estate taxes paid and insure your home – just like you already do. So your home always remains safely in your name, protecting you from ever losing your house. The amount you can qualify for is based on your age and home value: at 62, which is the minimum age, you can borrow a little more than half the value of your home. Seniors can qualify for these plans without income or credit qualifications. For some folks with lower income or low credit scores, there is no better time to take advantage of this great financial planning tool. Another reason not to delay is that when you set up this lifetime credit line, it comes with a built-in growth factor, currently near 4 percent. So, say you have a $125,000 unused credit line balance; in five years, your credit line value would have grown to $152,000, allowing you even more funds when you might need it later in life – even if your property value had dropped during that time.

When must I repay the loan?
A reverse mortgage is a government-insured program designed for homeowners age 62 and older who have some equity built up in their home. It is meant to be a Financial Planning Tool to help seniors remain in their home over their lifetime without fear of ever losing it, since there is no requirement for repayment of any funds used while they remain in the house.
The loan is due and payable when the last remaining borrower sells the property, permanently leaves the home or passes away. Until these events take place, you live in the home and make no payments to the lender unless you chose to. You are still responsible for maintaining the property, paying property taxes and insurance.
Who uses the reverse mortgage lifetime credit line program?
Can I lose my house to the lender, like you can with a normal mortgage?
Folks use the program to eliminate existing mortgages or other debt, receive Tax-Free monthly income, do home improvements or to just have available a large life time credit line to draw from IF funds are needed later in life.
No, the title remains in the name of the borrower(s) at all times, and you are never required to make a monthly payment unless you wish to; however, just like without a reverse, you are required to keep your real estate taxes current, as well as keep insurance on your home, so that you don’t lose it for those reasons.
Are my other benefits like Social Security or Medicare affected? The proceeds from a Reverse Mortgage are not income, so it is not taxable and does not affect these benefits; however, if you are under a Medicaid plan, you need to limit your draws, so in this case you should discuss it with an adviser.
How soon after getting my Reverse Credit Line do I have to renew it? Unlike a normal Home Equity Credit line that the Lender requires you to renew every one to five years, the FHA HECM Life Time Credit Line never has to be renewed; it remains available to you to use for your lifetime in the house. It’s a real Life Line to financial independence.
Can I, or my heirs, ever owe more on the house than what it’s worth? No, all FHA reverse mortgages are “non-recourse” loans, which means that you will never owe more than the home is worth, regardless of the loan balance. Once the last owner(s) passes away or moves out of the home permanently, the heirs can sell the property and pay off the existing mortgage balance and keep all the remaining equity; they can use other funds like insurance to pay it off, or they can refinance the property.

Things to consider before downsizing your home Once their kids have left the nest, many men and women over 50 begin to consider downsizing their homes. Downsizing to a smaller home can be beneficial for a variety of reasons, including less home to clean and maintain, more affordable utility bills and lower property taxes. But the decision to downsize is rarely black and white, and men and women often struggle with that decision. Perhaps the most difficult part of the decision of whether or not to downsize to a smaller home concerns the sentimental attachment many homeowners, especially those with children, have to their homes. The home might be too big for your current needs, but it also was the same place where your son took his first steps and where your daughter lost her first tooth. Saying goodbye to a place that was home to so many memories isn’t easy. But there’s more than just sentimental value to consider when deciding whether or not to downsize your home after the kids have grown up and moved out.

There are seller’s markets and there are buyer’s markets, and ideally you would like to sell your home in a seller’s market. But keep in mind that this might be the same market in whi ch you hope to buy a new home. The natu re of the real estate market depends on a host of factors, including geography. If the city or tow n where you currently live is in the midst of a seller’s market and you are planning on mov ing to a location where buyers have the upp er hand, then now might be a great time to move. But if you currently live in a buyer’s market and hope to move to a seller’s market, then you may end up paying a steep price, even when dow nsizing to a smaller home. Things may even them selves out if you want to downsize to a smaller hom e within your current community, but do you r homework nonetheless, researching the time of year when you’re most likely to get the most for your home and find the best deal on you r next place. The advantage men and women con sidering downsizing have is that they are rare ly in a rush to move out of their current home and into their next one. This gives them ample time to make the real estate market work for them .
Downsizing a home is something many men and women over 50 consider after their children have moved out. Such a decision is rarely easy, so homeowners should take as much time as they need before making a final decision to move or stay put. LP143966

Yoga is big business, attracting more and more people each year. Designed to promote physical and mental health, yoga has helped millions of people across the globe control their stress and improve their flexibility, and studies have shown that yoga is only growing in popularity. According to a study conducted by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau, roughly 20 million Americans practiced yoga in 2012, marking a 29 percent increase from just four years earlier. While some men and women over 50 may feel their time to take up yoga has passed, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, yoga can pay numerous dividends for the over 50 crowd. Yoga can help alleviate hypertension. Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a potentially dangerous condition that makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body. Hypertension contributes to a hardening of the arteries known as atherosclerosis, and can even contribute to the development of heart failure. A person’s risk of developing hypertension increases as he or she ages, so it’s important that men and women over 50 take steps to reduce their risk of hypertension, and yoga can help them do just that. A normal blood pressure is 120 over 80, but people with hypertension often have blood pressure readings of 140 and above over 90 and above. Studies have shown that yoga can reduce the top number, which is referred to as the systolic blood pressure. In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, researchers found that men and women who practiced yoga for six hours a week for 11 weeks reduced their systolic blood pressure by 33 points. The study’s authors feel that the slow, controlled breathing that’s essential to practicing yoga decreases nervous system activity, helping the body manage its blood pressure levels. Yoga helps practitioners maintain healthy weights. While yoga may not help men and women shed weight as
effectively as more vigorous activities, it can help them maintain healthy weights. Many men and women over 50 find vigorous or strenuous physical activity too demanding, and might not be able to perform such activities with the frequency necessary to prevent weight gain. But while yoga is physically demanding, those who practice yoga often find it takes a smaller toll on their bodies than more traditional strength training. Another way yoga can help to maintain a healthy weight is through its relation to stress. Yoga can help to relieve stress, and lower stress levels reduce the likelihood that men and women will overeat, which is a common response to elevated stress levels. Yoga promotes strong bones. Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which tissue loss leads to brittle and fragile bones. Aging is a significant risk factor for osteoporosis, and women are at even greater risk than men. The National Osteoporosis Foundation notes that women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone mass in the five to seven years after menopause, so it’s important that women (and men) take steps to strengthen their bones. The nature of yoga makes it an ideal activity to promote healthy bones. Because it is a weight-bearing exercise, yoga forces practitioners to hold the weight of their bodies up against gravity. This resistance to gravity puts mild stress on the bones, which respond by laying down new bone growth. But unlike other weight-bearing activities, such as jogging or walking, yoga does not damage cartilage or put stress on the joints. The AARP notes that studies have indicated the weight-bearing activity of yoga can be especially effective at reducing the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Though yoga might not have been popular when today’s men and women over 50 were in their 20s and 30s, that does not mean such men and women cannot take advantage of the numerous physical and mental benefits yoga has to offer. NOT JUST FOR YOUNGSTERS
October 2014 • PrimeTime • An advertising supplement to the Daily Press and The Virginia Gazette — 20
Bond between grandparents and grandkids benefits both What used to be the “golden years” of life for seniors is now turning into any opportunity to spend even more time with their youngest family members. Nowadays, a growing number of grandparents are called on to provide child care for their grandkids, many of whom are growing up in two-income households. Others are helping to raise grandkids while providing financial assistance for adult children who may not be able to live on their own. This trend has been corroborated in a few recent studies. Information from the Pew Research Center showed 7.7 million children in the United States were living in the same household as one of their grandparents in 2011. A University of Chicago analysis of a decade of data based on interviews with 13,614 grandparents, ages 50 and older, found that 61 percent of grandparents provided at least 50 hours of care for their grandchildren during any given year between 1998 and 2008. And an April 2012 study for the MetLife Mature
Market Institute and the nonprofit Generations United, an intergenerational policy group, found that 74 percent of respondents provided weekly child care or babysitting service for grandkids. Grandparents often cite helping their own children financially as well as staying in touch with grandchildren as motivating factors behind providing care. According to Generations United, staying in touch with grandkids can give seniors a feeling of self-worth and improve their overall health. When spending so much time together, grandparents may develop special relationships with their grandchildren, who may benefit from the knowledge and wisdom offered by their elders. The following are some lessons grandparents can share with youngsters.
EMPATHY: By sharing stories of how things were when they were younger, when opportunities may have been more scarce, grandparents can help teach grandchildren empathy. Grandchildren may learn to be grateful for the things they have and the people around them, rather than taking what they have for granted.
FAMILY HISTORY: Grandparents can tell grandchildren about family members, including youngsters’ own parents, and shed light on the generations that came before them. Looking through photos or watching old movies can provide the avenue by which to start conversations about family history and give children opportunities to ask questions. INTERESTS: Children may be excited about learning new skills or hobbies taught to them by their grandparents. Anything from gardening to woodworking can be shared. RESPECT: Children who grow up respecting their grandparents may have an increased tendency to respect authority figures outside their homes, which may help kids grow up to be more courteous and kind. Grandchildren also offer benefits to their grandparents. Companionship, new experiences and conversation can help keep grandparents’ minds sharp and bodies active well into their golden years. Caring for an elderly relative at Decisions about providing care for an aging loved one are seldom easy. Various options exist in terms of elder care, including assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Seniors who are self-sufficient may be able to stay in a retirement community or active living building. In other instances, the best course of action is to have an elderly relative move in with family members. According to Dr. Nancy Snyderman, who recently took on the role of caregiver to her own senior parents, 44 million American adults are caring for an older friend or family member. MetLife estimates that nearly 10 million adult children over age 50 now care for an aging parent. Care is defined as helping with feeding, bathing, dressing, and other personal care needs, going beyond driving a parent to appointments or helping them with financial matters. Taking care of a senior requires a profound commitment and can completely disrupt a person’s life, both at home and at work. Men and women faced with caring for an aging parent at home may want to employ several strategies to make that transition go as smoothly as possible.
Talk
to the senior about your options. Making decisions together will be best for everyone involved. It can be challenging to discuss mortality and whether or not elderly parents or relatives can properly care for themselves. Broach the subject well in advance of making any plans so you will have some understanding of how the senior feels about the situation and what would make him or her most comfortable. Your parents may already have a plan in place.
Establish
a caregiving budget. Caring for the elderly is expensive. MetLife says working Americans lose an estimated $3 trillion in lifetime wages, with average losses of $324,044 for women and $283,716 for men, taking time to provide care. Before a senior can be welcomed into your home, you must first determine which financial changes must be made to accommodate this person. Will a parent be contributing to a portion of the expenses or paying rent? Is it feasible for you to reduce hours at work to care for this individual? Once you have the numbers in black and white, you can better assess your situation.
Make
physical modifications. Your home may not be equipped and safe for an elderly resident. You may need to add a private space for your parent or relative, and install
HOME
night lights, secured railings, grab bars, ramps, a shower chair, and anti-slip surfaces. You may need to build an extension on the home or completely renovate what you have to make the space safe.
Aim
for stability. Moving and changing routines can be especially stressful for seniors who are used to their own schedules and habits. Transfer furniture and mementos from their home into yours. Encourage seniors to maintain a social schedule and invite friends over. Try to help your loved one keep his or her doctors and, if possible, take them to shop where they have shopped in the past. These opportunities will make the transition to a new home easier.
Discuss
finances. It’s essential to understand your loved one’s financial situation. Make lists of his or her assets and any insurance policies in his or her name. Understand which health procedures are covered and discuss ways to finance any procedures or medications that are not covered by your loved one’s policy. Ask if your loved one wants you to manage his or her finances or when he or she may feel this is necessary. Professional help, such as an attorney, financial planner or a geriatric care manager, can make it easier to understand the legalities and subtleties of these arrangements.
Make
time for yourself. Caring for the elderly can seem like a full-time job, and it’s easy to forget yourself in the process. Make time for yourself so your own health is not sacrificed while you tend to your loved one. TF14B699

Travel ideas for active seniors
Those who have said goodbye to the work-a-day grind now have many hours to settle down and relax. People who have continually put off vacations in lieu of work responsibilities may now have all the time they need to explore the world. Traveling for seniors can be rewarding and relaxing. Those with a substantial retirement nest egg have numerous destinations at their disposal. Mature vacationers travel more frequently and stay longer than any other age group. Travel ranks among the top leisure activities for men and women over 50, according to the Web site Suddenly Senior. Seniors can find several travel advantages at their disposal. Also, thanks to special
senior discounts, travel may be even more affordable than first expected. While certain destinations are not always practical for certain age brackets, there are many places to which seniors can visit comfortably and enjoy a wealth of memories. • Theme parks: Although theme parks may seem carved out entirely for the adventure-seekers, there are many other more placid activities that would appeal to those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground rather than looping through the air on a rocket-propelled coaster. With animal preserves, water parks, fine dining, and a bevy of hotels either in the park or directly on the outskirts, theme parks provide many activities for older travelers. Although theme parks require a
lot of walking, many provide wheelchairs or motorized scooters for those who need to get off of their feet. They also make a great option for seniors who will be traveling with the entire family, including children. • Beach resorts: Provided flying is medically safe, a beachside vacation can be the ideal trip for seniors looking for the utmost in relaxation. For those who have passports, the possibilities are endless. Those who prefer to remain on relatively domestic soil can retreat to Puerto Rico, south Florida, the California coast, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. • Cruising: Cruising is a preferred vacation choice for the 50+ set because it offers the convenience of an all-inclusive package and transportation all in one. With the myriad activities offered on board, cruises
A RETIREMENT LIFESTYLE COMMUNITY
• Guided tours: Seniors who want to experience a piece of history can sign up for tour packages backed by reputable companies. The tours may involve train or bus travel, and various attractions will be visited. At the end of the tour, individuals can choose to extend the vacation by checking into a hotel nearby. • RV trips: Another self-contained vacation that is entirely up to the people traveling is vacationing by recreational vehicle. Seniors can customize their routes depending on which areas they want to see. Companies like Cruise America RV enable people to rent an RV so they needn’t worry about the expense of buying one outright. However, should RV traveling become addictive, there always is the option of buying a camper later on. Setting an itinerary and then establishing the pace enables travelers to tour the country or cross the border as desired. From beaches to national parks, many areas offer RV hook-up areas and amenities. • Exotic tour: Seniors who were never able to afford or spare the time for an extensive vacation may now want to visit those exotic locations that have beckoned for years. Now could be the time to book a ticket for Europe and visit all of the cities that have made the history books. Those looking for even more adventure can travel to the South Pacific and explore tropical islands. Others may want to go “down under” and experience the rugged Outback or the culture of Australian city centers.
With a bevy of free time and fewer restrictions holding them back, seniors could be ready for the next great travel adventure. LP133934

Reaching Out, Having Fun, Staying Involved By Warren Spence
S
uccessful businesses know it is good business to give back to their community, to appreciate community support, and to be associated with helping the community meet a special need. For some businesses, it is sufficient to write a check. But for others, such as Hudgins Holiday, giving back is more than a check. It is getting involved with people and creating some fun. The Hudgins family inherited the commitment to community involvement from “Big John,” who started the business back in 1982. “Big John’s” sons, Art and Michael Hudgins, learned the value of community involvement at a young age, as they were growing up in the business. As observed by Aris, Art’s daughter, “The nice thing about Art and Michael is the wide span of their interests and involvements in the community — all the way from charity fishing tournaments to fashion shows. This difference in their involvements is an
asset to Hudgins Holiday because we rarely miss an opportunity to get involved with something or someone new. Appreciation of these different personalities trickles down through everyone else at the dealership. They know that any charity or event near and dear to their heart will always be considered in the ‘community involvement hat.’”
Think Pink “Chevy Making Strides” is in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Holiday staff gets very involved as they put on their pink shirts every

Back to School Hudgins Holiday sponsored the YMCA’s “Bright Beginnings” program. This involved sponsoring students in a “go-backto-school” shopping extravaganza at JC Penny accompanied by Hudgins Holiday employees. What fun to see the children’s faces light up!
Summer Carnival “Summerfest” is a carnival that Hudgins Holiday runs every year to say “Thank You” and embrace customers and the community with a no-charge event. York County drives over in a fire truck and has identikits for kids. McGruff, the crime dog, is a star attraction. The event features catered carnival food, fun games for all ages, bouncy houses, and radio stations broadcasting live allll day. Aris d l reports, “We donated a portion of the sales revenue from the cars sold during the month of “Summerfest” to the local YMCA.”

Ladies Night Out Art and Michael Hudgins both believe that if you make sure your employees know that they are #1, they will make your customers #1. That always proves to be true — when you empower your people to be great, they step up to the plate, get involved, and customers reap the benefit. It’s a win-win for everyone. An example of this in action is the quarterly “Ladies Nights” hosted by Holiday’s Joel Firman, Master T Technician.
