You’re engaged and officially a bride-to-be.

It’s romantic. It’s a fairytale. It’s surreal.

Bask in that beautiful bride-to-be glow for a few days.

Admire your ring and show it off.

Grab all the bridal magazines you can find and immerse yourself in their pages, dreaming about your upcoming big day.

Then, come down from the clouds, plant your feet on the ground and put your wedding plans to work.

Your to-do list Select a date. Discuss date options with everyone important to your big day – relatives and wedding party, for sure.

Set a budget. You want your fairytale day to be everything you imagined, and it can be -- but a budget helps you keep things from whirling out of control. Set a realistic budget with some wiggle room so you can handle unexpected expenses and add unanticipated niceties.

List your guests. Know in advance how many guests you plan to invite so your wedding venue and budget fit your needs before you go any further.

Reserve a place. Popular wedding venues can book up months, even years, in advance, so keep your options open and quickly check those spots as soon as you confirm a date. Make sure the venue accommodates your guests list, with a few extra seats reserved in case you overlooked anyone. Ask about needs for your guests and wedding party -- restrooms, changing rooms, mobility access and parking, to name a few.

Pick your wedding party. These are the people who will stand with you and your fiancé on your big day, so it’s nice to ask them early on.

Also, keep them updated on plans so they can arrange their work and lifestyles to be there for you for pre-wedding and day-of festivities.

Settle on a style. Choosing a theme whether it be an informal beach or a formal church wedding can help you make choices that reflect that style. Select a color scheme so it’s easier to narrow options as you choose a cake, flowers, favors, centerpieces, linens and wedding party attire.

Find a wedding planner. Whether it’s a super-efficient cousin or a professional party planner, a calm, collected person can help keep you on track and help narrow down choices when you are overwhelmed.

A journal, often called a “bride’s book,” also helps keep you organized and serves as a keepsake after the wedding.

Order the cake. Engage your fiancé to help choose the flavor or flavors you both like, whether it is a traditional multi-tiered wedding cake or cupcakes. Icing and embellishment colors matter, so keep your wedding style or theme in mind.

Make the announcement. Tell the world you’re engaged, using the newspaper, save-the-date invitations, Facebook and/or an interactive website that can be used for gift registrations, wedding updates, prenuptial photos and congratulatory notes from friends and family.

Get the gown. It’s all about the dress, whether it satin and lace or chiffon and embroidery. Choose the dress that suits your style, and makes you instinctively feel and look good.

Dress the wedding party. After you’ve chosen your gown, talk to your fiancé, as well as the rest of the wedding party, about attire that complements your look.

Hire a photographer. A professional photographer will capture all the major and minor moments of your big day – your walk down the aisle, your sad but happy parents, your grinning groom and your admiring guests. Its memories you can revisit over and over again in photo and digital forms.

Choose your flowers. Whether it’s a single-stem rose or a bouquet of daisies, let your wedding flowers accent the occasion, not overwhelm it.

Book the music. After the solemn vows, it’s party time. Whether it’s a DJ or a live band, lively music entertains your guests and helps you relax and enjoy time with them.

Mail the announcements. Printed wedding announcements are still the preferred way of inviting guests to a wedding, while emailed RSVPs are perfectly acceptable, especially if you have a website that can manage the responses.

Register for gifts. Give guests several options for giving gifts that meet your lifestyle needs. Use store registries for things like kitchenware and linens; there are honeymoon and dream home registries online for monetary gifts. Some couples who need nothing often ask guests to benefit their favorite charities.

Discuss the honeymoon. Decide whether you go away for a few days close to home or take the big honeymoon trip now rather than later. Either way, begin looking for travel deals and settle those as soon as something good surfaces.

2015 trends: Lace has been a big trend this past year and I expect it will continue. Strapless has been the go-to neckline for many years, but girls are starting to ask for other options such as cap sleeves and v-neck gowns with straps. Low cut, key hole, illusion and intricate backs are very hot right now for brides who want guests to have something interesting to look at while at the altar! More fitted silhouettes have dominated for a while, but I’m seeing a return to the more traditional a-line and ball gown styles.

What’s in, what’s out 2015 wedding trends

Something borrowed something blue – it’s a wedding trend steeped in timeless tradition.

Beyond that, wedding trends come and go.

For 2015, the plain strapless dress is out while the romantic look of long sleeves, high necklines and plunging backs is in.

Once the all-important gown is chosen, all else falls into place. The bride and groom can personalize their wedding anyway they want.

Here are 5 suggestions from wedding trend forecasters on how to make your big day an event to remember:

Make everyone feel relaxed. Many couples choose to have the wedding and reception at the same venue, making it convenient for guests.

Home, beach, garden and B&B weddings are relaxed sites for outdoor weddings; tents with seating for the ceremony and tables for dining afterward keep everyone comfortable. Strings of twinkling lights add to the ambiance, especially late evening and night.

Personalize your event. Everyone loves a good story, and “how you met” or how you got engaged” could be one of those stories shared as part of your wedding. Or, maybe your childhoods were full of storytype events. Turn those moments into photos and small write-ups that can be used as centerpieces on each table or as a slideshow featured during the reception.

Document the memories. At the reception, ask guests to take selfies and upload them to a website you created ahead of time; also, ask them to write notes about the wedding and reception to accompany their selfies. Later, turn the selfies and notes into a wedding album of its own.

Your guest book can also be made special by asking guests to sign their names in the margins of a coffee table book you and your fiancé personally picked out; while you browse the book in your new home, you are also reminded of the special time with special people.

Serve sweets, lots of them. A wedding reception is a big party and sweets make a party even sweeter. With personalized candy and candy wrappers so readily available, create a “candy bar” with different kinds of candy in pretty bowls. Guests can fill a personalized candy bag with their sweets to take home, or enjoy their sweets while working off the calories on the dance floor. The candy bar can complement or replace the traditional cake servings.

Feature a signature drink. When it comes time to celebrate the bride and groom, a signature drink can be the toast of the town. That special drink can be a wine the happy couple likes, or a blend of fruit juices and vodka or bubbly champagne. Be sure to include a nonalcoholic version for kids and those who prefer it.

After a couple months, they knew there was something more between them, and began serious dating.

All about them: Liz graduated from Bruton High School in 2011and is currently finishing her Bachelors at Liberty University, in Interior Design.

Brooks graduated from Jamestown High School in 2008, and is working for Liberty University and finishing his Masters in Business Finance.

The proposal: They dated eight months before Brooks proposed. In the romantic traditional way, he got down on one knee and proposed in front of the Governors Palace in Colonial Williamsburg. Afterward, he had a dinner planned with both sets of parents at the Blue Talon Bistro to celebrate.

Setting: Venue is located on a 3,500-acre, plantation-style farm. Wood in the barn is refurbished wood from the plantation’s barns from the 1940s and 1950s. Manor house’s original foundation dates back to 1746. The Manor house was built by a Virginia state Sen. Augustine Claiborne. For a long time in the 1800s and early 1900s, the house was used as a ferry point for shipment from New Kent to King William. It’s a countryside, waterfront, shabby chic setting that is beautiful at every turn.

Get some help. If your fiancée hits a wall, suggest hiring a wedding planner.

Avoid adding insult. If she starts complaining about her family’s wedding demands and needs, don’t join in on the family bashing.

And your buddy who tends to drink too much? Make sure one of your more reliable (or sober) groomsmen keeps him from flirting with your fiancee’s mom at the rehearsal dinner. Your guys don’t have to be saints, but they will have responsibilities, and it’s your job to make sure they know what they are.

Get sentimental. The day of your wedding, send her a gift, flowers or a sweet note to read while she’s getting ready. Or, at the reception, pull the videographer aside and tape a special message to her. She’ll see it later and she’ll love you all the more.

Dating days: The Pinto and Campana families met almost 25 years ago when the Pintos moved from Iowa to Williamsburg to start their chiropractic business. Caley’s dad, Bob, joined Kiwanis where he met Ron’s grandfather, Vince, and the families instantly hit it off after the Pintos started going to the famous Campana family Sunday dinners.

Over the years, the families stayed in touch but businesses and families made time together difficult.

All about them: Caley graduated from Lafayette High School and then Clemson University with a B.S. in marketing; she’s director of marketing for Pinto Chiropractic & Rehabilitation.

Ron graduated from Lafayette High School and then Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.S. in criminal justice; he’s an associate broker at Campana Waltz Real Estate LLC. The proposal: A dream that woke Ron in the wee hours of the morning told him how to propose to Caley – re-create their first date. But that wasn’t going to be exactly easy since the Green Leafe was no longer in business.

Having already done the proper thing by asking for Caley’s parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage, Ron was determined to do the proposal the way he dreamed it. He got permission to use the Green Leafe for the proposal, and then suggested he and Caley visit the restaurant for old time’s sake. When they walked in, their table was set with a bottle of wine her parents had given him for Christmas and her favorite song playing – Michael Buble’s “Everything.” Popping the question was the easy part.

All about them Alison was born and raised in Williamsburg, while Evan was born in St. Louis but moved to Williamsburg in elementary school.

Evan received a degree in finance with a minor in leadership from Christopher Newport University, where he also played football. He works for Davenport and Co. in Richmond.

Alison studied nursing at James Madison University, and soon finishes a nursing internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.

The proposal They were engaged their junior years of college. Alison’s roommate told her they were going to take her out to a nice dinner for getting accepted to JMU’s very competitive nursing school. They blindfolded her and then drove about 30 minutes away. Still blindfolded, she was walked down the street and left there. When she removed the blindfold, Evan was standing there. On a Skyline Drive overlook with the sun setting, he proposed and she said yes.

Special day touches Centerpieces and décor incorporated buttons because Alison has collected buttons since she was 5 years old. She also made 20 table centerpieces, using blue Mason jars, raffia, lace and burlap.

Instead of a traditional cake, they served their favorite desserts -- strawberry shortcake, mini pecan pies and chocolate torte.

Second time around:

Ideas for remarrying Remarrying and wondering how to do it right? Go by what feels best and comfortable to you.

Announcing the engagement. If either of you have children, they should be the first to know, because your remarriage will affect their lives the most. Then, tell your parents and immediate family. Ex-spouses should hear the news if you have children together. Then fill in your friends and other relatives. If you are recently widowed or divorced, you may not want to do a newspaper announcement right now -instead, wait and announce the marriage yourself. Are engagement parties appropriate? Definitely, although this time the couple might throw a laid-back cocktail party or dinner in their home or in a bar or restaurant, as opposed to the bride’s and/or groom’s parents hosting a soiree.

Registering for gifts. It’s okay to register for gifts – or not register. If you have enough traditional stuff, you can sign on at alternative registries for wine, books, trips or even a mortgage.

Having showers. Again, you may not need all the home stuff that many first-time brides receive at showers but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a get-together with your closest female friends and relatives -- or a couples shower for both of you. Showers with a special theme – cookbooks, travel or gourmet foods are fun.

Wearing white. Wear what you want – pure white or an off-shade like ivory, ecru or cream, or something with a hint of color. It’s your wedding and your big day.

Donning a veil. Unlike the dress, the bridal veil still does symbolize purity and being “untouched” -- probably because brides used to wear veiling so that the groom would not see them at all before the wedding.

Generally, it’s still only appropriate for first-time brides to wear them.

But if you really want to wear one -- perhaps you didn’t have one the first time -- it won’t be a travesty.

Choosing attendants. You each need a witness to sign your marriage license -- generally that’s the maid of honor and best man -- but any two adults can do that for you. Remarrying couples usually don’t have as many attendants as some first-timers do (the line of 8 identical maids in a row may be out of place here), but that doesn’t mean you can’t have your closest friends, children, siblings or even your parents at your side.

Wording invitations. Your parents may have paid for much of your first wedding, or even if they didn’t, they may have served as the hosts of the party, and their names may have been listed on the invitations in the traditional way. Second-time invites can be worded traditionally as well, but this time, you and your spouse-to-be may want to host your own wedding, especially if you’re paying for it. Certainly, you can include a line on your invites to honor your parents If the bride still goes by her first married name, it’s appropriate to use that name on this invitation, especially because some (or many) guests may know her by that name.

Including kids. A remarrying bride might have her son escort her down the aisle or ask her daughter to be her honor attendant; a second-time groom might choose his son as best man. Or, consider having a special family moment right after you exchange your vows. Gather your children around you and have your officiant offer a blessing. Some couples even have family vows -- new stepparents promise to love and take care of their new stepchildren. You might choose to give your kids a special wedding gift, as well, during the ceremony or at some other time on wedding day. The idea is to make them feel a part of this important event.

Be sure the kids are comfortable with their role. Talk to your kids and try to gauge their feelings -- and respect exactly how much they want to be included.

Here are some helpful pointers to help you get started on creating a good wedding registry: Meet with a consultant. These trained professionals are on site to assist and discuss everything you want and need.

Look for special programs. Some stores offer special funds that allow guests to contribute any amount to the ultimate gift card, so the bride and groom can later choose exactly what they want. Others offer free gift wrap for gift-givers, and allow you to purchase remaining items at a discount after your wedding.

Start early. Most couples like to register four to six months before their wedding date, which allows more time for choosing items, planning for showers and meeting other deadlines.

Register together. Whether it’s in-store, online or both – make a day of it and have fun selecting all the things that will be part of your new life together.

Choose different price points. Guests appreciate a varied list that has many gift options to fit their personal budget.

Create a registry that reflects you. If you’re a laid-back, easygoing couple, consider registering for a more casual dinnerware pattern that you can use every day, then mix in some fancy pieces to use for those special occasions.

Select your settings. A five-piece setting serves one person and includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, tea cup and saucer. If you want to serve eight guests, register for eight five-piece settings.

Factor in some extras. When registering for drink ware, register for a few extras in each glass size in case some break down the road.

Tristan is a Senior Fire Fighter with the Williamsburg Fire Department. He is also an Assistant Chief with the James City Bruton Volunteer Fire Department.

Together they co-own Wedding Co. of Williamsburg, LLC. Special day touches Jess’ dress was a combination of a newly purchased dress redesigned to incorporate portions of her mother’s bridal dress.
