Jurors and Judges Artistic Director Leo Charette led a group of five accomplished artists in selecting participants

from applicants for the 2015 show. After a 25-year career in Higher Education where he directed the Career Offices at several universities, including Duke University and the College of William and Mary, Leo pursued photography as a new venue for his creative energies. Since 2006, his work has received accolades at art shows across the country. As Artistic Director, he also oversees artist communication, designs the booth layouts and posts artist information on the AOFTA website.

The five 2015 jurors spent an entire day at a Thomas Nelson Community College computer lab thoughtfully considering each

submission from hopeful applicants. While An Occasion for the Arts has built its reputation being a juried show, this is the first year a panel of experienced artists worked together to make artist selections. All applicants remained anonymous during the jury process. Artwork, booth image and a submitted artist statement were all that was considered. The jury was asked to evaluate applications on creativity, original thought and intent, going beyond the expected, identity of design, consistency of style and professional presentation along with strong overall concepts.

Judges Jefferson C. Harrison and Diane C. Wright will determine which artists win cash awards and recognition in the 2015 show.

Jeff Harrison, who will judge two-dimensional art, received his Ph.D. degree in the history of art from the University of Virginia, where he completed his doctoral dissertation on the paintings of the 16th-century Netherlandish painter Maerten van Heemskerck. He studied at the Art History Institute at the University of Amsterdam and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. His career at the Chrysler Museum of Art began in 1982. He served as research curator, curator of European art and as the Museum’s chief curator of European Art. He organized and curated scores of exhibitions during his 33 years at the Chrysler, from Rembrandt and the Golden Age to Norman Rockwell -- and he published numerous books and articles on the Museum’s permanent collection and on 16 th-century Netherlandish art. Harrison retired from the Chrysler in June 2015 with the title of Curator Emeritus. Three-dimensional judge Diane Wright earned her MA in the History of Decorative Arts and Design from Parsons the New School for Design. She has conducted research and lectured on glass for a number of institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Blair House, Washington DC. She served as the Marcia Brady Tucker Senior Curatorial Fellow in the American Decorative Arts Department at the Yale University Art Gallery and worked as an educator at the Corning Museum of Glass where she taught glass history to students of all ages. She is the recipient of the Rakow Grant for Glass Research from the Corning Museum of Glass. Currently she is The Carolyn and Richard Barry Curator of Glass at the Chrysler Museum of Art where she oversees a comprehensive collection of glass with more than 10,000 objects, spanning 3,000 years.

Which should I buy?

Because choosing a few pieces of art out of so many possibilities can be a challenge, here are some ideas that might help you select work that you will enjoy for years to come. Who is the artist? When you buy at a competitive juried show, like An Occasion for the Arts, every invited artist has been selected because of the quality of their work. By attending the show, you have a chance to meet and talk directly with the artist. Ask them about their technique. Ask them why they chose the subject or style of the work you are considering. Not only will you learn more about the art you are buying, you will come away with a memorable story associated with it.

How was it created? When you look at a hand-crafted work of art, it is hard to imagine the hours of training and labor that went into its creation. Ask about the process and materials the artist used. Will I still love it tomorrow? Trust your judgement. If the work—whether practical, decorative or wearable— speaks to you; if it seems strong, distinctive, startlingly beautiful, interesting or poignant the first, second and third time you look at it, you will probably enjoy it more with each passing year. Will it fit in my home? There is no reason why an intriguing blown vase can’t sit happily beside an old copper pot or elegant contemporary sculpture can’t compliment a traditional painting. If a work of art touches your heart, we believe it will grace your home.

An Occasion for the Arts, a 501c-3 non-profit organization, was founded in 1969 to provide Williamsburg with an arts extravaganza. Since then it has grown, year by year, to become the area’s premier art and music festival. The all-volunteer Board of Directors dedicates an enormous amount of time and talent year-around to produce the event. We are especially proud to draw outstanding artists from around the country on the first weekend in October each year. We are equally proud of having an exceptional youth component to the show. Not only do we provide space for talented youngsters to display their work, but a stage to perform and, in partnership with Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center, a place for youngsters to create their own artwork.

Lively performances are held both days on our two stages, and the popular food court provides a culinary taste of fall. Check the schedule of performances and the map on page 12 so you won’t miss any events this year. On Saturday, The Williamsburg Book Festival joins us to celebrate the literary arts as well as visual and performing arts. With the help of our Friends, sponsors and supporters, we now provide an endowment to the Williamsburg Community Foundation in order to assure continued support of young artists in our area. If you would like to sustain quality art in Williamsburg, join us as a volunteer or as a Friend. An on-line donation form can be found at aofta.org.
