This Century Art Gallery’s Art Education Center has, for many years,

generously donated volunteers and materials to enhance the experience of youth who participate in and attend An Occasion for the Arts. As TCAG executive director, Tempy Barbru, says, “Art can teach lessons of life to all ages — tolerance, balance, positive expression, fear, humor, empathy . . . Art is a performance of the mind and soul.” The activities near the community center, where youth art is displayed and young performers take to the stage, are This Century Art Gallery’s gift of creative opportunities for the children at the show.

Kiwanis members begin work at An Occasion for the Arts on Friday night when they transport the youth art displays from storage to the Community Center building. Early Saturday morning, Kiwanis adults, KEY Club and CKI members help set up the youth art displays and make sure that balloons, tablecloths, decorative flowers, water and flyers are distributed throughout the show. Throughout Saturday and Sunday, Kiwanis members take charge of the beer and wine concessions. They remain late into Sunday night to remove the youth art displays. Kiwanis volunteers, who are essential in making AOFTA a success, are members of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg. The youth are members of the Jamestown and Lafayette High School Key Clubs and The College of William & Mary CKI.

For nearly 20 years, Francis C. McDonald, president of J&F Productions, has provided professional sound production for the stages at An Occasion for the Arts. He has assured our performing artists of the best sound quality available in an open-air forum. Francis McDonald, Ph.D., APR, has served as senior public relations coordinator with Newport News Shipbuilding, a department head for the City of Norfolk, and has taught at Norfolk State University and Christopher Newport University. He is assistant dean in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University. McDonald is a multi-talented man: a professional writer, editor as well as a producer of multi-media shows and special events. He also coordinates design, instillation and operation of audio/visual/video production equipment. An Occasion For The Arts 2014 • 7

JUROR AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Juror Emily Smith is the Executive Director of 1708 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia as well as the Artistic Director for InLight, also in Richmond. Smith has served on the Virginia Commission for the Arts grants review panel and is a statewide speaker for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She received a Masters in Art History from the University of Virginia in 2002. Smith reviewed submitted work from over 200 artists seeking acceptance in the show.

Artistic Director Fred Miller, raised in Williamsburg, where he attended Matthew Whaley Elementary School, serves for the fourth time in this position. Miller is owner and operator of Prince George Art and Frame in Williamsburg. His role as Artistic Director was to manage the process by which the artists are juried into the show, including the criteria for acceptance.

On both Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5, An Occasion for the Arts patrons are welcomed free of charge to the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Some of the many featured exhibitions at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum are: A Celebration of Quilts: dozens of quilts representing the diversity of quilts made in American from the 18th through the 20th centuries. Several are new to the collection and have never been seen by the public. American Folk Portraits: Highlighting the museum's superb collection of primarily 19th-century images of children, adults and families in the Gladys & Franklin Clark Foundation Gallery. Exhibitions at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum include: Rebuilding Charlton’s Coffeehouse: Colonial Williamsburg’s reconstruction of Charlton’s Coffeehouse involved the work of every department and trade in the Foundation. The exhibition explores how the building could be so accurately constructed and furnished when seemingly very little was left of the original. Changing Keys: Keyboard Instruments for America, 1700–1830, exploring the evolution of spinets, harpsichords and pianos in the 18th and early 19th centuries, with more than 25 instruments drawn from our significant collection of English keyboards. Many have never before been exhibited. Sound sticks allow you to listen to many of the instruments and models of detailed aspects of the keyboard allow you to discover how the instruments work.

CELEBRATING YOUTH AND THE ARTS An integral part of An Occasion for the Arts is its focus on youth art. Interactive educational and fun activities are planned for all ages inside the Community Building as well as on the front lawn. Live student demonstrations, on-site workshops and other art activities will be held during both days of the show. A judged Youth Art Exhibition inside the Community Building features 30 schools and 700 pieces of art work. Each participant will be recognized and trophies go to the top three schools. Arc of Greater Williamsburg will also have an art exhibit and workshop. Seven youth groups will perform on the stage. An Occasion for the Arts has formed a collaborative partnership with This Century Art Gallery/Art Education Center. Gallery art will be on display inside the Community Building. All are invited to join on the lawn where kids of all ages can enjoy circle art, personal portrait time, etching and more. A high school art winner will be on hand to discuss award-winning art and how to get started. Children will have an opportunity to create original art and learn how to design their own gallery. A most hearty welcome to the 46th An Occasion for the Arts. We are excited to be a featured event in Williamsburg’s Celebration of the Arts. An Occasion for the Arts, October 4th and 5th is an exceptional event. We will showcase diverse juried artists in eight artistic categories. Twenty-seven performing arts groups will entertain you on two stages — the Community Building and the Courtyard Café. The Youth Art presentation will be in the Community Building. A partnership with This Century Art Gallery brings additional youth art focus and activities for participants. The Courtyard Café features music, food, and drinks. The Colonial Williamsburg Fife and Drums will kick off Sunday morning, and a new event, A Taste for Wine and Beer, will give you an opportunity to sample beverages on Sunday afternoon between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. All of the details are in this program and can also be found on http:www/aofta.org. AOFTA is an all-volunteer organization. It was again named by Virginia Living Magazine as one of the best art events in the state. The Board members chair committees (listed in the Program) and work tirelessly all year to produce this event which would not be possible without our Friends, sponsors, community partners as well as the hundreds of volunteers who make it possible. A special thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg and This Century Art Gallery — and all of the volunteers they provide. An Occasion for the Arts is pleased to be preceded by two exciting events: The Gallery Crawl on October 2nd and the Merchants Square concert featuring the Right On Band on October 3rd. Please enjoy the show, the art, the music, the food, beer, wine and the youth activities. As always we appreciate and need your feedback so that we can continue to make this the great event that you enjoy attending and telling your friends about. Board members will be wearing blue AOFTA shirts. They will be delighted to chat with you and receive your feedback. Feedback can also be provided at the Headquarters Tent located at Duke of Gloucester and Boundary Streets. Jane Medlin-Burton, President, An Occasion for the Arts
