G

GIFT EXCHANGE rab bags are a staple of this season of giving, and the following are a few dos and don’ts to ensure participation in gift exchanges is fun and friendly for all involved.

&

Do make it a game. Try passing wrapped gifts around in a circle to a holiday song. When the music stops, the gift you’re holding is the one you open. Don’t let anyone see the gift you bring. The idea is to keep things as secretive as possible so as not to sway participant selections.

Do set a gift amount limit. Holiday grab bags are more about having fun and exchanging a little something than walking away with amazing prizes. Establish a spending limit so everyone receives a gift of roughly the same value and no one feels slighted or left out.

Do expect some grab bag gifts to be gag gifts. Such gifts are entertaining and may make up the majority of the grab bag gifts. Keep your sense of humor and you’re likely to enjoy grab bags a lot more.

Don’t exceed the spending limit. It can be tempting to spend more to make your gift appear more impressive. But overspending defeats the purpose of the gift exchange. Grab bags typically are anonymous, so being overly generous will not win you any style points.

Don’t regift items to use as grab bag picks. Should the person who gave you the gift participate in the grab bag, he or she can trace that gift back to you and may be offended.

Happy Holidays

Do make sure everyone is aware that there will be a grab bag gift exchange, as there needs to be an equal number of gifts to participants so everyone gets a treat. Hosts may want to have a few extra wrapped gifts around just in case someone forgets to bring their contribution. Gift exchanges in the form of grab bags, auctions, swaps, and other games make for fun additions to holiday festivities. They also can be a part of any family or friends gathering to add excitement and entertainment to the occasion. ■ Metro Creative

wrapped presents sustain the suspense of the treasure beneath the paper. The average gift giver cannot recreate Santa’s wrapping room but may be able to fashion a compact wrapping station in a seldom-used corner.

Many people long to have an area where they can create wrapping magic for holiday gifts, birthday presents and other tokens of appreciation throughout the year. However, with limited space, tall rolls of gift paper may have been stashed in the back of a closet or tucked under a bed, making them inconvenient to use once it is time to wrap gifts. With just a few feet of space, anyone can create a compact gift wrapping station that, while free of fancy bells and whistles, has all that’s needed to get the job done. The first step in creating your wrapping station is to find a spot that is out Continued p 12 Enjoy a glass of wine or a beer with your pedicure.

of the way but accessible. The back of a door or behind the door often provides adequate space to store supplies, and the width of a door might be the right size for the average roll of wrapping paper. If the door is too narrow, the rolls can be hung vertically instead of horizontally. Fortunately, gift wrap is narrow and doesn’t take up much space on its own. Therefore, it usually can be tucked into a corner. Also, you just may have enough scrap materials around the house to use to build your wrapping station. If not, a trip to the hardware store or home improvement center is in order. Wooden dowels are an inexpensive yet valuable supply. Rolls of wrapping paper can be slid on the dowels and hung horizontally on hooks protruding from a door or wall. For a vertical installation, make a wooden frame the width and length that will be needed. Drill holes in the frame on the top and bottom through which the dowels can be fed. Then drill small holes on the ends of the dowels. Use cabinet door handles or drawer pulls on the

end that are wider than the holes made in the wooden frame. This way the drawer pulls can be unscrewed at the top to remove the dowels and refill with a fresh roll of paper. Then the knobs can be screwed back on to prevent the dowels from falling through the wooden frame. Those who are a bit more handy may want to paint and attach a piece of plywood to the door on hinges that can be folded up and locked into place with a hook when not needed, but then put down to serve as a shelf on which the wrapping can be done. Be sure to have a shallow ledge that protrudes somewhat under the shelf to offer support when the shelf is in the open position. A separate dowel can be used to keep rolls of ribbon neat and within reach. A scissor hung on a hook or attached to a string will ensure that you’re never hunting for a scissor under rolls of wrapping paper. It also keeps the scissor safely out of reach of young children. A tape dispenser can be mounted on the wall or door as well, enabling one-handed measuring and cutting of the tape. Get creative with your homemade wrapping station and then enjoy how efficiently you can wrap gifts. ■ Metro Creative

A

TRANSPORTING

s families spread out across the country and even across the globe, the holidays can become a little more difficult to navigate. According to AAA, a federation of motor clubs throughout the United States, roughly 90 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more for year-end holidays.

Families that are spread out must decide where to spend the holidays together. But in some cases, families can’t all be together, so celebrations must be handled remotely and gifts shipped to waiting recipients. Shopping for gifts may have taken some time, but now you will have to figure out how to get those gifts where they need to go. The following are some pointers for holiday celebrants who are driving, flying, taking a bus, or shipping gifts. SHIPPING DATES If the goal is to purchase and ship gifts near and far, starting early has its advantages. Thousands upon thousands of cards and packages are shipped each day during the holiday season. In 2013, shipping giant UPS projected 132 million deliveries during the last week before Christmas, and actual figures exceeded those expectations. Many shipping services will get packages to recipients on time, but customers can help them along by sending them several weeks before the holidays. Shipping later in the season may incur additional fees for priority shipping. Always check sellers’ “purchase by” dates to ensure items will arrive on time. Items that will be shipped internationally should include a detailed description as well as the value of the package. Presents under a certain value may be duty-free or tax-exempt. Check with customs to get a better idea of the shipping regulations. PACKING THE CAR If a holiday road trip is in your future, space constraints may require you to be a little creative when packing the car. Shop for smaller gifts, including gift cards, which are easier to transport. Advise family and friends that you will have limited space so they should not go overboard with regard to gifts given to you in return. Heed safety precautions and do not obscure driver visibility in the car by stacking presents too high. Also, secure boxes and packages in the car so they do not slide or move around. Anything that is not secured can become airborne in the event of a collision, increasing the risk for injury. Items placed on roof racks should be tightly secured so they don’t fall off and present a hazard. PLANE RIDE

Those who will be traveling for the holidays should plan how to transport any gifts they will be bringing along long before the day comes to hit the road. ■ Metro Creative

Airlines have specific regulations in place regarding which items can and cannot be brought on planes, at least inside of the cabin. Thanks to increased security measures, restrictions are greater than they once were. Transportation Security Administration officers may have to inspect items for safety purposes. It may be better to leave gifts unwrapped and then wrap them after the flight to avoid hassles during the screening process. Liquids, including foods, may need to be put in a checked bag if they exceed 3.4 ounces. Consider shipping delicate items ahead of time if you are concerned about breakage.
