e are very pleased to collaborate with the Virginia Gazette and other local sponsors to bring you this special edition of the Pet Gazette, which gives us an opportunity to tell you about the Heritage Humane Society. The Heritage Humane is an Open Admission shelter. That means that no animal in need from James City County, Williamsburg, and District 1 of York County is ever turned away. We work with families who are considering surrendering their pet, hoping that they will be able to keep it. If that’s not possible, we will do our best to help that animal find a loving home and the care it needs. Each year, the Heritage Humane provides care and treatment for more than 1400 homeless animals.

There are many ways you can help the Heritage Humane Society. To learn more, please visit us online at heritagehumanesociety.org. If you “Like” us on Facebook, you will see news, success stories, and more. Please feel free to call us at (757) 221-0150, or come by our shelter and look around. And please let us know what you think about the Pet Gazette. We welcome your feedback and ideas. Remember, if you cannot find your pet, be sure to call us first! On behalf of the homeless and unwanted animals who are unable to speak for themselves, we thank you for your continued support.

Some of the animals brought to us shelter are in need of food, shelter, and medical attention. Some animals have never received the level of care and attention they do when they arrive at Heritage Humane. Did you know that we have a Heritage Hero program? For a donation of only $25 donation per month, you can become a pet’s Heritage Hero. Your generous support will cover all of the costs associated with one pet from intake through adoption. That includes spay/ neuter services, medical care and treatment, food and shelter, and so much more. Visit us online to learn more about becoming a Heritage Hero to one of our community’s homeless pets. If Heritage Humane Society were not here, the community’s homeless and unwanted companion animals would have no place to go. Over 90 percent of our funding comes from individuals and local businesses, so your support is very important to us.

Most sincerely, Kimberly Laska Executive Director

serval surgery At Anderson’s Corner Animal Hospital, we had the pleasure of treating this African serval cat in April. He had been turned over to Bear Path Acres Animal Education Center with a fractured right ankle. They took him into their facility and gave Anderson’s Corner Animal Hospital a ring to see if there was any hope for this damaged leg. Dr. Roy Barns from Virginia Veterinary Surgical Associates came down to ACAH to direct the surgical repair alongside Dr. Murphie. It was neat to be able to help out such an amazing animal. – Anderson’s Corner Animal Hospital

spay/neutering myths...busted

MYTH I don’t want my male dog or cat to feel like less of a male. FACT Pets don’t have any concept of sexual identity or ego. Neutering will not change a pet’s basic personality. He doesn’t suffer any kind of emotional reaction or identity crisis when neutered. MYTH My pet will get fat and lazy. FACT The truth is that most pets get fat and lazy because their owners feed them too much and don’t give them enough exercise. –Humane Society of the United States

Protect your pets...

from the heat

E

xtreme heat can be unpleasant for anyone, and pets are no exception. While it’s easy for men and women to detect if their bodies are responding negatively to heat, those warning signs may not be so prevalent in pets, who may suffer in silence as the mercury continues to rise. Pet owners must pay special attention to their pets on hot days, which the Humane Society of the United States notes can be both uncomfortable and dangerous for pets. In an effort to help pet owners protect their pets from the summer heat, the HSUS offers the following tips to pet owners who want to keep their pets cool and safe this summer. Don’t leave pets in a parked car. The temperature inside a vehicle can quickly approach dangerous levels on hot days, so pet owners should never leave their pets in parked cars, even if they leave the air conditioning on and the engine running. See page 22 for details. Rather than taking pets with you on car trips, leave them at home inside a comfortably air conditioned room where they won’t be vulnerable to rising temperatures.

Change pet’s exercise regimen. Pet owners who make sure their pets get daily exercise should change such routines when temperatures are on the rise. Midday walks or jogs should be switched to evenings or early mornings, when temperatures tend to be at their most moderate. In addition, cut back on the time spent exercising, as pets may have trouble breathing on hot days. When taking your dog for a jog or a run in the summertime, do so on the grass, avoiding asphalt, as hot asphalt can do significant damage to your pet’s paws. Be mindful of your breed. Dog owners should recognize that certain dogs can handle the heat better than others. Shortnosed breeds have a harder time in extreme heat because their shorter airways don’t allow as much time for the air they breathe in to cool as dogs with longer noses. In addition, the HSUS points out that dogs with white-colored ears are more susceptible to skin cancer than other dogs, making it imperative that owners of such dogs reduce their exposure to the sun on hot days when the UV index is especially dangerous.

Let dogs inside. Doghouses might not be as prevalent as they once were, but many owners still keep doghouses in their backyards so their four-legged friends have a place to relax outdoors on lazy afternoons. But doghouses can be similar to parked cars on especially hot days, making rising temperatures feel even hotter. Let dogs hang out inside in an air conditioned room on hot days to reduce their risk of heatstroke. Learn to recognize the signs of heatstroke. Pets suffering from heatstroke will exhibit certain symptoms, and pet owners who learn to recognize those symptoms can do something about them before it’s too late. Heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, and lack of coordination are just a few potential indicators that a pet is suffering from heatstroke. Animals that are very old, very young, overweight, and unaccustomed to prolonged exercise, as well as those who have heart or respiratory conditions, are especially susceptible to heatstroke. Learn more about pets and heatstroke at www. humanesociety.org . –Metro Editorial
