SWIM LESSONS - YOUTH

The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program consists of several comprehensive levels that teach children of varying abilities how to swim skillfully and safely. Each level includes training in basic water safety. All aquatic and safety skills are taught in a logical progression. Prerequisites for each leave are: Beginner: No pre-requisites; new to the pool, needing to learn water adjustment skills. Able to fully submerge head and swim short distances on front and back, with support. Intermediate: Able to swim at least 5 yards on front and back, unsupported. Able to swim at least 15 yards (half of pool length) of both front crawl and elementary back stroke. Advanced: Able to swim at least 25 yards of front and back crawl.

This American Red Cross program is designed for beginners and intermediate-level swimmers. Students will be grouped according to skill level on the first day of class. Topics of instruction include basic aquatic skills, swimming strokes, personal water safety skills, and basic water rescue. If you want to become a better swimmer, or have dreamed of becoming a lifeguard, this program will help you reach those goals. There are no prerequisites for this course. SAFETY TRAINING

DURHAM AQUATIC SCHOOL

The purpose of this program is to offer free lifeguard certification training to area teens and adults willing to work for Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) as lifeguards. To qualify for the Durham Aquatic School, participants must be at least 16 years of age. They must also register for the DAS Pre-Course Swim Test which will be held before the online course begins. Each participant must be able to pass the prerequisite tests. Pre-requisites: Participant must be at least 16 years of age. They must be able to swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. This may be performed using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both swimming strokes-no backstroke or sidestroke allowed. Additionally, participants must be able to tread water for two minutes using only their legs-arms must be out of the water or hands in the armpits. Lastly, participants must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object from a depth of, at least seven feet, and return to the starting point holding the object with both hands while swimming and exit the pool. The retrieval of the object, return to side and exit needs to be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds or less. Both hands must be holding the object with the face at or near the surface. This is a blended learning class. Participants must complete the 7-hour online portion of the course prior to the first class. Space is limited, so apply early! Participants in DAS must attend a pre-course swim test session to be able to participate in DAS. They must have a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, or an equivalent certificate from another organization. They must successfully complete the Red Cross on-line session for the course (information will be given to participants after registration). Participants must also successfully complete a pre-course session which tests swimming and rescue skills. Participants must possess a pocket mask. Course registration will close April 4. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be certified to teach a variety of American Red Cross water safety programs, including all levels of the “Learn-to-Swim” program. Course fee includes two manuals. Participants must be at least 16 years old; must pass a swimming pre-test consisting of 25 yards front crawl, 25 yards back crawl, 25 yards breaststroke, 25 yards elementary backstroke, 25 yards sidestroke, 15 yards butterfly, back float for one minute, tread water for one minute; and they must successfully complete the Red Cross on-line session for the course (information will be emailed to participants after registration). WATER EXERCISE

SHALLOW WATER EXERCISE

This class offers a total workout while protecting joints from the pounding of a traditional land aerobics class. The program is designed to utilize the natural resistance of water allowing for muscle toning, cardiovascular endurance, and increased flexibility. Participants do not need to know how to swim to join. A multi-visit pass is available for purchase on a Play More Card at a discounted rate per class. SPRING EGG DIVE

It’s an Eggstravaganza! Dive, splash, and swim for eggs and win prizes at our Spring Egg Dive event. All swim levels are welcome and life vests will be provided. BIMBÉ TEEN PARTY

Teens! Come celebrate the end of the school year and kick off the summer right at Campus Hills Teen Pool Party! There will be games, music, food, and give-a-ways! Grab your friends to cool off at the pool and turn up to the sound of the beat. Participants must wear appropriate pool attire. Participants 18 years old will be asked to present a valid high school ID in order to participate. Age: 13-18 No Cost CAMPUS HILLS POOL 16046 May 20 F 7pm-10pm - Lap swim reservations will last for a 45-minute timeframe. - Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance and can be made up to 7 days in advance. - Two swimmers will be allowed per lane. To request to not share a lane, please email dpraquatics@durhamnc.gov. - Patrons should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their reservation timeslot. - All individuals while indoors are required to wear face coverings except when swimming or showering. - Patrons may bring personal swimming or fitness equipment. - Patrons are encouraged to arrive with their swimsuit on underneath their clothes. - Patrons will have access to the locker rooms to shower or to change after swimming. - If the patron who is swimming needs someone to accommodate them on their visit they must also follow facility requirements. - Drop-in swimmers are allowed if space is available. Reservations have priority. - In the case of inclement weather, DPR staff will communicate with patrons if a reservation will need to be canceled.
