We’ll read a nature-themed book, then take a walk on the wild side to find the nature right outside our door. Children must be accompanied by a parent, and of course, wear boots or sneakers that can get a little dirty! Parents must accompany children. Pre-registration is required. Muddy Boots At Sandy Creek

Active Together

Come explore the outdoors together with DPR! Learn outdoor skills like hiking, shelter building, canoeing, geocaching and river exploration while hanging together outside. Adult participation is required. Registration is per child. Adults may register more than one child from the same household between ages 4-6 years. Locations will vary depending on activity. Youth And Family Sunset Family Paddle

Savor a sunset on Lake Michie with this Sunset Paddle. We will paddle canoes and kayaks and enjoy the peaceful sunset over the lake. DPR Outdoor Recreation will provide the equipment; you bring weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Bull City Campout

Whether you’re new to tent camping or an old pro, camping with your friends in West Point on the Eno park with Durham Parks and Recreation is a good time for all. Campfire stories, river explorations, night hikes, s’mores and stargazing are just a few of the adventures we’ll have in the park. A cookout dinner of hotdogs is provided for participants. A limited number of tents and sleeping bags are available for this event. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Preregistration is required for all participants. Halloween Flashlight Scavenger Hunt

Looking for a fun Halloween activity for the whole family? This activity is just for you! Bring your family or team of friends and come race through West Point on the Eno after dark. You will search for hidden reflective Halloween and nature-themed “targets” around the park using flashlights. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Starlight Paddle

See a different side of Lake Michie with an evening Starlight Paddle. With its dark sky, Lake Michie offers excellent sky-watching opportunities, especially on the water. We will provide canoes and kayaks as a group to enjoy the beauty of the night sky over the lake. DPR Outdoor Recreation will provide the equipment; you bring weatherappropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. There may be nothing better than sitting next to a warm, crackling campfire. Durham Parks and Recreation Outdoor Recreation invites you to join us for a Fourth Friday Fire. Congaree National Park Trip

STARGAZING SERIES: GEMINIDS METEOR SHOWER

The Geminid Meteor Shower is the most prolific meteor shower of the year with up to 120 meteors per hour. Join us in the meadow at the West Point on the Eno Environmental Education Pavilion as we watch the spectacle. Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate while lying on a blanket under the stars. No preregistration required. Please note that this program is weather dependent.

Creepy Clown Trail

Years ago on a dark and stormy night a clown car crashed into the Eno River. The car was recovered but the occupants were never found. Legend has it that once a year clowns can be seen along the trails of West Point on the Eno. Join us for a creepy take on our popular flashlight scavenger hunt. Bring and flashlight and search for clowns along the trail but watch out for Buttons, he’s a little grumpy. Adults only, preregistration is required for all participants. Please note that this program is weather dependent.

Fall Colors Sunset Paddle

Enjoy the fall colors of the trees along Lake Michie while paddling canoes and kayaks with DPR Outdoor Recreation. We will provide the equipment, you bring weather-appropriate clothes and wear closed-toes shoes. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Preregistration is required for all participants.

Join us for a trip to Congaree National Park in South Carolina. We will paddle along the tranquil waters of Cedar Creek to view old-growth forests with bald cypress trees and an ecosystem teeming with wildlife. River otters, deer, songbirds, wading birds, and alligators call Congaree home. After paddling the dark waters, we will go camping at the national park campground and enjoy dinner over the fire. The second day will include breakfast at camp followed by hiking and exploring along the boardwalk trails above the forest floor. The paddle will involve paddling up a slow-moving stream, paddling in windy conditions, traveling multiple miles in a canoe, and insects. Equipment and boats will be provided. Dress for the weather. Transportation, food, and instruction are provided. Participants will leave and return to Morreene Road Recreation Center. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Preregistration is required for all participants. Please note this program is weather dependent.
