Jason Kidd The Rivalry Between the Knicks and the Nets in my Driveway By Dan Rattiner I don’t know if you’ve heard the news, but Jason Kidd has bought a house in the Hamptons. Jason Kidd is one of the best professional basketball players ever, I worship the ground he walks on and I will get to that. Before I do, though, I will tell you about the house. It is 8,000 square feet on two acres South of the Highway in Water Mill, it has a pool and pool house, a tennis court, an outdoor shower, a bar, a fireplace, six bedrooms and six baths, a gatehouse with what upstairs could be a gym and a two-car garage. According to those people who track these things, he paid $6 million for it and before he bought it, Jennifer Lopez, who was also looking for a house, considered it. Now having gotten that out of the way, I will tell you why I worship the ground that this basketball player walks on. Jason Kidd is not a great shooter. He is, at six feet tall, not at all a big guy. He is, however, probably the greatest forward to ever play the game. Forwards are little guys whose main job is to set up plays, dribbling around and getting the ball to bigger guys who can shoot or to other guys running past who can dribble in and score and so forth and so on. Around 2000, Jason Kidd, as a New Jersey Net, developed a skill never before seen on a basketball court. He developed the ability to visualize in his head where each of the 10 people on the court were at any given moment, Dan Rattiner’s second memoir, IN THE HAMPTONS TOO: Further Encounters with Farmers, Fishermen, Artists, Billionaires and Celebrities, is available in hardcover wherever books are sold. The first memoir, IN THE HAMPTONS, published by Random House, is available in paperback. A third memoir, STILL IN THE HAMPTONS, will be published in May.

where they were inclined to next go to and how fast they intended to do that. He’d process this information in an instant, and, if thrown the ball, would feint a move and then fire the ball, laser-like, in to one of his teammates who would either fire it off to somebody else who would shoot and score or shoot and score themselves. I tell this in its long form, because it is the

only way to describe what was Jason Kidd’s unique ability. Kidd was the equivalent of a chess grandmaster at playmaking. There it would happen again—Kidd gets the ball, whizzes it instantly to a teammate moving into a most unlikely spot and wham—and there it would be—another easy layup for a score. Nobody had ever seen this on this level before. People would stand up and pump their fists in the air when this happened. Jason Kidd actually inspired me to invent a game about him. I played this game—it is

outdoors and is a real game—and I did so without his knowledge or permission on the basketball court in our backyard in Springs around three mornings a week beginning in 2004. I continued on with this, year after year until several years later in January with the wind chill -16 degrees, I slipped on the ice and cracked my collarbone, which my wife decided was the end my career. But I loved that career, every minute of it. Here’s how the game worked. At 7 a.m., with the sun rising, I’d grab a basketball out of a wicker basket near our front door and head out with it, bouncing it as I went, to the basketball backboard and rim set up on the front of our garage at the end of our driveway behind the house. There would be no cars in the area where I would be playing this game. Further toward the road, though, sometimes a car would be parked in the driveway at a place where it could help in preventing a stray basketball from bouncing down into the street. I would be the only person out there on the court. In the summer I’d wear shorts and a t-shirt, in winter, boots and a leather jacket and scarf. Sometimes if it were really cold, I’d wear gloves. The crowd would roar when I came out. I’d either be at Madison Square Garden or the Meadowlands. And the game, every one of them, would be between the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets. I’d be playing for all 10 players on both teams for the next three quarters of an hour. The rules of the game were simple. First one team would have the ball and try to score, then, the other team would have the ball and try to score. I’d race in to start the game, for example, as a New York Knick, get near the basket and then, if I met imaginary resistance, do a fade away jump shot. If I made it, the Nets would get the ball and I’d dribble back out to (continued on page 12)

Several Hamptons residents made appearances during last Sunday’s Super Bowl. Water Mill’s Madonna was the halftime performer, while East Hampton’s Jerry Seinfeld, Amagansett’s Matthew Broderick and Southampton’s Howard Stern appeared in commercials. * * * Many Hamptons residents joined designer Stella McCartney at the opening of her New York flagship store in SoHo, including David Lauren, Lauren Bush, Aerin Lauder, Jessica Seinfeld, Lorne Michaels, Anna Wintour and Cindy Sherman among others. The event featured a Meat-Free Monday menu prepared by Mario Batali. * * * After being called “wonderful” by Simon Cowell, 22-year-old Springs resident Lilly Merat is hoping to make it big on “The X-Factor.” The young musician auditioned with a group for the popular show’s first season but didn’t make it through. She’s applied for a second chance on the second season. East Hampton’s L.A. Reid will join Cowell at the judges’ table for the second season. The Epic Records chairman outlasted Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, who were not asked back. * * * Southampton producer Patricia Watt and Joe Morton are presenting a 100th Birthday concert/play in honor of bluesman Robert Johnson at the legendary Apollo Theater on March 6. It will be a benefit for The Blues Foundation in Memphis. Artists participating so far include Taj Mahal, The Roots, Jeffrey Wright, Cassandra Wilson, Todd Rundgren, Keb Mo’, Savion Glover and Betty Lavette. Famed Shelter Island filmmaker Albert Maysles will be filming the show as part of a film on Robert Johnson. The children, ages 3 through 10, presented Officer Kim Notel, their school’s beloved Project DARE Officer from East Hampton and Firefighter Russell Jordan, a NYFD 9/11 first responder from Sag Harbor with cards, posters and a song sung by the kindergarten class. They also honored US Marine Corp, Taylor Schwartz of Westhampton Beach, who is currently on active duty in Pensacola, Florida. Children wore firefighter and police officer hats and military helmets and waved flags in celebration as they celebrated their three Local Heroes. * * * Madonna halted the step-and-repeat at the red-carpet premiere of W.E. at the Ziegfeld to check in on celebrity photographer and WireImage co-founder Kevin Mazur, who suffered a broken wrist and foot and (continued on page 19)

an imaginary foul line, turn around, and try to get in again, this time as a Net knowing he was behind 2-0. I might miss that second shot—I have, since I am only five eight, a hook shot that can clear tall defenders and swish through the basket— but not often enough to have ever made any team as a youth. Now here, as a Net, I’d try the lazy hook shot and miss, and then, of course, it would be the Knicks who would come up with the ball and head back out to the top of the key for the next try at the basket. I think you get the idea. I’d try whatever next came to mind. Perhaps I felt that I’d gotten free to try a three-pointer—my three point line was simply “far, far away.” If that missed, it would be back to the Nets. Or on some occasions, a rebound taken again by the Knicks might get an extra special try again. I’d sometimes call a foul. I know this is impossible, it’s only me. I’d trot back to the foul line, bouncing the ball and try one and one, underhanded – I shoot fouls underhanded. After that, it would be back to the action, all of which was being narrated by the sports commentator Marv Alpert, who had this wonderful way of saying “…and he SCORES!” or after a long three pointer “…yessssssss!” And I’d pump my fist in the air and continue on. I suppose if you watched this from afar you would think I was just practicing shooting hoops. But I’d go on and on. And the game would be swaying back and forth between the two teams, first one team ahead and then the other, as the fans went wild.

On occasion, and I don’t know how to explain this, one of the two teams would run a streak. This is just like in a real game. Perhaps the streak was happening when I was a Net. The Net would shoot and score then a Knick would shoot and miss. Then it would happen again. Sometimes one side or the other could run a streak of 10 or 15 points with the other side just missing and missing. Marv Alpert would declare that team “cold.” There’d be a time out in the hopes things would change. Sometimes it would. It was here, very often, that Jason Kidd would pull out the stops. Honestly, I didn’t really know or care who the players were for either the Knicks of the Nets. Neither team was playing well during this era, although the Knicks were at least marginally better. But I sure knew Jason Kidd. If the Nets went on a streak and were coming up to even with the Knicks, it would be Jason Kidd, now clearly identifiable by the announcer, who would lead the charge. He’d throw the ball in—I’d bounce it off the garage door—and someone would get it and swish, two points. Or he’d throw it in and he’d get it back himself and then wham, hit a three-pointer. All I can say about this is that during these runs, particularly when it was a run being engineered by the Nets with Jason and his razzle-dazzle passes down through everybody, the crowd would be on its feet and I, as Kidd, would be making that happen. I was experiencing very high levels of adrenalin at these times. I will say that in the early years of my Jason

Kidd game, my shooting was not as sharp as it was to become later on. In 45 minutes, I’d play until one of the two teams reached 20. Later, I’d play until one of the two teams reached 40. Game over. I didn’t keep track of which team won more than the other, but my sense of it was the Nets won more. And clearly it was the fantastic Jason Kidd who made that difference, sometimes at the end, sometimes just before the buzzer with a three-pointer fired from just in front of the grill of the car parked way down and blocking the ball from going down the driveway. What a shot! After that, sweating and panting, I’d dribble the ball up to my front door, head inside, drop the ball into the wicker basket, take off all my clothes and run into the shower for five minutes, then dress and go down for breakfast. It would be 8 am. It’s been several years now since I’ve been out there. From time to time, I take the ball out and try a shot. But my touch is gone. At least for now anyway. You know how it is. Use it or lose it. As for Jason, he still plays and you can tell he still sees the whole dynamic of the moment in his mind, but he’s in his mid-30s now, not his mid-20s, and he can’t execute quite the way he used to. Still, he finds flashes of great moments. Also, he has left the Nets. The Nets, through bad luck or bad choices, never could get the dominant seven-foot center, who would have been the yang to Kidd’s ying and send them (continued on page 18)

For Sale If the Signs are Smaller, Does That Mean Fewer Things for Sale? By Dan Rattiner One thing nobody wants is lots of “for sale” signs sprinkling the front yards of businesses and private homes in the Hamptons. It makes you think the whole place is going downhill. As you drive by, it’s true you do see the lakes and fields and oceans and mansions, but you also see all these signs and you think, gee, is the whole place for sale? It isn’t of course. But people could come away with that impression. “I could live here,” a stranger might think. “I’ll find a million-dollar home for sale and offer a dollar. They’ll jump at it.” Because of this misleading situation, when the Village of East Hampton put a proposal

forward last week that would limit for sale sign size from its present 7 square feet to just 1.5 square feet, nobody objected, not even the realtors themselves who would have to scrap all their oversize signs, including the ones with the neon and the flashing arrows and so forth and so on. They’d have to have little miniature and very discreet signs made up new. “For Sale,” they would whisper in very cheerful pink or purple lettering. As a result, maybe, just maybe, it would make the community look less as if it is for sale by a factor of five. (The difference between 1.5 and 7). The optimists would say that it would. Driving by, you’d see the Hamptons and you’d

still see these signs, but they’d be cute little signs, sort of shy. You might be forgiven for thinking that the place is NOT for sale. And you might turn into an eager buyer. “A million? Tell them I’ll bid a million four, and if they get a bid higher than that I’ll beat it.” That’s more like it. It was not so long ago that there would be just one for sale sign allowed per town, and in that town, only after they sold one house could they put it up in front of another house. They just had that one sign. (This is a lie.) Today the real estate situation is different. (continued on next page)

Non-stop Filming in the Hamptons for TV and Movies By David Lion Rattiner The Hamptons has become extremely desirable for writers who are looking to tell stories for both television and the movie theater. If you just look at the last three years, three major motion pictures and six television shows all feature the East End as a major destination for the international jet set, and that is because, well…it is. In film, the Hamptons was featured in the movie Something Borrowed which came out in 2011 and is also featured in the movie Degrassi Takes Manhattan which came out in 2012. The Inside Job, which was a hugely popular comedy about Wall Street, depicted the Hamptons as a playground for Wall Street’s elite traders and investment bankers. And if

you go back a few years, we can remember Jack Nicholson starring in Something’s Gotta Give and countless other films. Television though, has really put the Hamptons in the limelight recently. The Country Music Network shot an entire reality show in the Hamptons called “My Redneck Vacation.” But the really big winners for television in the last couple of years have been the USA Network’s hit show, “Royal Pains” starring Mark Feurstein, and the insanely successful show, “Revenge” on the ABC network. But even other popular shows such as “Castle,” “Gossip Girl,” “The Real Housewives of New York City” and “Grey’s Anatomy” have episodes where the characters in the show head out to the Hamptons. And how can any

of us forget when the Seinfeld gang all headed out to the East End? “I WAS IN THE POOL! I WAS IN THE POOL!” “It shrinks?” “Like a frightened turtle!” With so much film production taking place on the East End of Long Island, one would think that it would be a large industry out here. But one would be wrong. It is extremely rare for a movie that is set in the Hamptons to actually be filmed in the Hamptons. While the television show “Royal Pains” does occasionally come out to the East End to shoot scenes in Southampton, for the most part, the show is shot on sets in Brooklyn. The show “Revenge” is entirely shot in North Carolina. Not a (continued on next page)

Sale

(continued from previous page)

We are in a deep recession, although here it’s a higher-up recession. Properties on the market here have an extra zero added to the price for sale when compared, for example, to Bayonne, New Jersey. I think it would cheer everybody up if we had all our real estate signs smaller. I think if East Hampton eventually passes this law, it will after that be passed throughout the Hamptons, because nobody will want to have a situation where you could pass through East Hampton and everything is fine and dandy and then come to Sag Harbor or Southampton, different municipalities, and there’s just a forest full of “FOR SALE” signs everywhere. “What’s wrong with these places?” the

prospective buyer might ask the realtor as they rumble along the highway. “Something fishy going on in Sag Harbor? Turn the car around.” So yes, I am all for having smaller signs on the front lawns of homes for sale. But I do think there should be an exception to the rule. I would make an exception if the property for sale were a big oceanfront estate on many, many landscaped acres. I think having a little teensy “for sale” sign in front of such a place would, frankly, be a bad design statement. People, seeing such a teensy thing on such a large property would just laugh and say hurtful things about our community as they went by. I would define “a big oceanfront estate” in

two ways. It would have to be listed for more than $20 million. Or, alternately, the owner of the property would have to show income tax returns for recent years to the Town fathers to indicate he or she was among the top 1%. For those that qualified, I would allow a “For Sale” sign to be as big as six feet high by 15 feet long. But I also would require that in small print, the for sale sign tell the history of the house, about how a former President lived there or how a debutante swung from a chandelier in that house during a wild party— anything to amuse passersby—although it would have to be true, and also a little bit about the seller, similar to what you might see on Page Six in The New York Post. Another idea would be to ban ALL for sale signs in the Hamptons. Not allow even one. They do this on Martha’s Vineyard I think, or maybe it’s Nantucket. One of those places. Things get bought and sold one way or another. Word of mouth. Little slips of paper passed from one person to another in a fancy restaurant. Carrier pigeons. Back room deals in smokefilled rooms. Advertising in Danshamptons. com and Dan’s Papers. And still another idea is this. Up on County Road 39, going westbound just before you get to the Lobster Inn and the Sunrise Highway, put a huge metal pot on the north side of the road. Here, people leaving the Hamptons could throw envelopes filled with the money they have left over from being in the Hamptons along with, on the envelope, their name and phone number. This money could be collected every evening by the realtors, who would then deed over one property every day to a lucky recipient right on television after they announce the winners of the New York State Lottery. (The money would be handed over, less commission, by the realtors to the seller of the property. This would be all on the up and up.) That’s how I would do it anyway.

Movies

single episode has been actually filmed in the Hamptons and many of the actors and actresses in the show have never even been here. So what gives? Why can’t we attract more filmmakers to actually FILM HERE, versus pretending that they film here. Is it the drive out to the East End? Or is it because there aren’t enough support systems in place for them to easily get filming? If you wanted to make a movie in the Hamptons, how would you go about getting a permit to do some filming? The fact of the matter is that you wouldn’t know what to do, and quite frankly, neither do Hollywood elites, and this problem has drawn the attention of the Town of East Hampton who has created a group known as the Town of East Hampton Media Advisory Committee (MAC). The group consists of people who have made their living in the movie business and are living on the East End, and just last week they have announced that they will create a website called filmhamptons.com and filmthehamptons.org to facilitate and promote film, television and other media production in

Wait a Second

More Time on Your Hands This Year Than Ever Before By Dan Rattiner 2012 is not going to be a regular run of the mill year. It is going to be the longest year of the decade. In February, the powers that be will be adding an extra day at the end of the month as they do every four years. And then in June, the powers that be will be adding an extra second into the last day of that month. This will make 2012 a super long year. The reason for this messing with time, you probably know, is because the scientists who officially measured time for the first time back in the last century B.C. didn’t do the math exactly correctly. By the 16th century, it was found that the Julian method was way off and the calendar year—everybody agrees this is supposed to be the length of time it takes the earth to take a revolution around the sun—was too slow by at least six hours a year.

As a result, a huge 10-day correction had to be made in the 16th century. They had to add all those days back in. After that, so it wouldn’t happen again, a new rule was made that every four years we would add a day to the end of February to keep up with everything. The extra second correction came about for a whole other reason. In the 1950s, scientists figured out a way they could accurately measure a day without having to keep track of the sunrises and sunsets. They observed that electrons inside an atom jiggled at a certain rate. Noting the number of jiggles involved in a 24-hour spin of the earth, they divided by 24 hours and by 60 and came up with the amount of jiggles that would represent one full second. From this, with certainty, they could calculate the day. And so they have, ever since. It was a cute solution. Too cute. What has

been found out during the last 60 years is that the earth doesn’t do a 24-hour revolution in exactly the same amount of time every day. Every day, by an infinitesimal amount, too infinitesimal to have been noticed when they set up the Atomic Clock, the earth spins slower than it did the time before. It has to do with friction or something. The earth makes its way through the cosmos. It gets harder and harder. So the number of electron jiggles is less. What to do? The scientists met. This was around 1972. It was decided that when the earth fell behind a certain amount, they would add this extra second back in. They would meet once a year to see how the earth was doing. If it seemed the right time, they’d order the extra second (continued on page 18)

Pierson High School’s Remarkable Science Run By Stacy Dermont Pierson High School senior Sam Miller was the most recent Sag Harborite named as an Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalist. Three hundred semifinalists were named nationally, 61 from Long Island. He was awarded $1,000 for his accomplishment, along with a matching $1,000 for his high school. Finalists go on to compete in Washington, D.C. for the top prize of $100,000. It was announced last week that Miller was not a finalist, but that he is Pierson’s 2012 valedictorian. Not bad at all. Pierson can boast that it’s had at least one Intel semifinalist for the last seven years running. Sam Miller’s work focuses on sooty mold,

scorias spongiosa, a fungus that grows on beech trees. No doubt we have a lot of this on the East End. But how did Miller happen on it as a project? When it comes to fungal properties all roads lead to Pierson High School Science teacher Dr. Robert Schumacher’s classroom. Schumacher, or “Shoe,” as his students call him takes a no-nonsense scientific approach to teaching. Students don’t just pass through his classes, they work in the lab outside of class time on individual projects. Often they continue the research of students who have gone before them. Miller began working on his project when he was a junior. Pierson grad Alisha Bateman had proven in 2005 that sooty mold possesses anti-fungal properties. Miller went

on to test it for its antibacterial qualities. Sooty mold may have a bright future as a drug or as part of a treatment for a disease. Specifically, the anti-fungal compounds found in sooty mold combat Candida, the infection also known as thrush. Thrush affects many AIDS patients and people undergoing chemotherapy. In co-teaching Pierson’s scientific research class, Dr. Schumacher and his brother Richard Schumacher work closely with the University of Mississippi (UM). In exchange for the use of UM’s lab equipment, Pierson researchers share their findings with the school, which then conducts further testing on the compounds. In other words—sweat equity. It’s a win-win. Go Whalers!

harborfrost Last February, for the first time, Sag Harbor, celebrated “Harborfrost.” It was a blast and this year it’s only getting bigger and better. On Saturday, February 11, beginning at noon, look for the return of village-wide restaurant specials ($20.12!), ice carving and fireworks. PLUS locals and “winter people” will be stripping down to their skivvies and jumping in the water next to Long Wharf at 3:30 p.m for “The Frosty Plunge.” They will be raising money there at Windmill Beach to support the local ambulance corps. Local restaurant Phao will be giving participants hot soup and

the Sag Harbor Gym is donating hot showers for plungers. Dan’s Papers own Kelly Laffey and Denise Borschein will be there in the frigid waters getting their harbor frost on. Buy them a drink? There will be more live music at HarborFrost this year, provided by local musicians throughout the village, plus the many shops will be featuring sales and discounts. Check out the ads on these pages and visit www. sagharborchamber.com for more info. For a complete list of events see our DayBy calendar on page 38.

inserted. The last time they added the second was 2008. But times are changing. More and more, there are computers and watches and machinery around the world that are set to operate on Atomic Jiggly Electron Time. Although they were able to set up the four-year add-a-day feature, they have been unable to add any adda-second feature for the obvious reason that this adding of the second takes place at the whim of the scientists. Whims never make it to computer chips. For this reason, when it was announced a few months ago that this would be the year to add the new second, certain scientists, particularly in America and in other highly computerized countries around the world, said they wanted to abandon adding the extra second. Let the earth not keep up. Let it fall behind. Let the sun rise earlier every day and set earlier every day. It would be tens of centuries before it would be even noticeable. And then they could make one big, sort of charming, correction. As was done in 1582. But doing it every five or six or 16 years? That was crazy. It would be a huge laborintensive operation to do that, and each time, as more and more computers got tacked on, it would be even more so. Eventually—who knows? Perhaps there would be a big crash. Don’t even worry about the seconds being lost. Stay on course. Let the earth drift slower. All you’d have to do is adopt the Atomic Clock everywhere and let the old fashioned way of doing this—noting sunrises and sunsets—just be some quaint thing that used to work but no longer does.

When the request to abandon the add-asecond program went around though, it was found that most scientists liked the way things were. So what if we have to have it catch up with the Atomic Clock every decade or so? Remember 2000 when everybody thought a computer disaster would strike because of the turn of the century and the failure of computer clocks to have been programmed with more than the two digits from the 1900s? Nothing happened bad then. Nothing will happen bad now when we add the second. Why trouble trouble? Why imagine an imaginary disaster that won’t come? In the end, the scientists voted to continue along with the plan to add the second at the end of June. But in acknowledgement of the doomsdayers, they also decided to review this decision again in three years. So what are you going to do with your extra second? I know what I am going to do with mine. At home in East Hampton I am going to organize all the junk I have accumulated in the basement. At work, I will start on still another memoir about all the fun I’m having writing my stories for Dan’s Papers. At play, I will take my wife on a trip to Paris, and we will come home on a cruise ship. And with the time left over after all that, I will go to a spa and learn yoga and spiritual peace and quiet to make myself a better person. I will also learn the art of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, something I’ve been putting off and putting off. See you after the second is over.

However, the website will also serve as a resource for information on housing options for actors and crew members, information about local union and non-union professionals, listings for supporting and related local businesses and services, pictures and descriptions of desirable filming locations and information about state-of-the-art sound studios such as East Hampton Studios, as well as editing facilities and professional editors. Ben Gazzara, Actor, 81 By Kelly Laffey Actor Ben Gazzara, an East End resident, long-time fixture at the Hamptons International Film Festival, Emmy winner and Broadway luminary, died on February 3 in New York. Gazzara, who had been fighting pancreatic cancer, had a prolific acting career that spanned over 55 years. He was well-known for his powerful, distinctive voice that gave life to such characters as Brick in the original production of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955). Gazzara followed with an equally compelling role in A Hatful of Rain (1955), for which he received a Tony nomination. The stage roles helped to put Gazzara’s name on the Hollywood radar, and he landed his first movie role in 1957’s The Strange One. “When I became hot, so to speak, in the theatre, I got a lot of offers,” The New York Times reports Gazzara as saying in a 1998 interview on “Charlie Rose.” “I won’t tell you the pictures I turned down because you would say, ‘You are a fool.’ And I was a fool.” Gazzara’s film career faltered in the 1960s, but he found success with television. Most notably, Gazzara starred in “Arrest and Trial” (1963) and “Run for Your Life” (1965). However, he didn’t receive his first Emmy until 2006 for his work in HBO’s “Hysterical Blindness.” Despite the early struggles on the big screen, Gazzara eventually achieved great success with his movies. His career took off in the 1970s, as he collaborated with esteemed director and friend John Cassavetes. The two worked on three movies—Husbands (1970), The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) and Opening Night

SouthO

(1977)—all of which were wellreceived. Seamlessly fluctuating from stage to screen, Gazzara’s career will be remembered for its longevity. His most recent Broadway appearance was for the popular 2006 revival of Awake and Sing! Perhaps one of Gazzara’s more memorable films, however, was as pornographer Jackie Treehorn in the comedy The Big Lebowski (1998). Gazzara was born in 1930 in New York. He was drawn to acting at an early age, appearing in a Boys Club play as a child. He eventually went on to study at the acclaimed Actors Studio in

Manhattan, an institution that also helped to shape the career of Marlon Brando. Gazzara is survived by his wife Elke Krivat, who he met in Korea in 1981 while filming Ichon. They were married in 1982, and Gazzara adopted Krivat’s daughter Daja. In addition, Gazzara has a daughter, Elizabeth, from a previous marriage to actress Janice Rule, which lasted from 1961 to 1979. His first marriage was in 1951 to Louise Erickson. The two divorced in 1957. Gazzara also famously dated actress Audrey Hepburn for a time—the two met on the set of the film Bloodline (1979) and also worked together in They All Laughed (1981), a movie about a detective who falls in love while on assignment.

State Assemblyman’s District to Shift a Bit? By Kelly Laffey New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., who currently serves New York’s 2nd Assembly District, may soon have some new constituents. Under a proposed redistricting plan, Thiele, whose legislative district currently includes Southampton Town, East Hampton Town and the southeastern portion of Brookhaven Town, would be the assemblyman for the majority of the East End. Thiele would gain Southold Town and Shelter Island Town from Assemblyman Dan Losquadro’s 1st Assembly District. Thiele would also lose Mastic, Mastic Beach and Shirley to Assemblyman Dean Murray of New York’s 3rd

Assembly District. And Losquardo’s district would shrink in area to include Riverhead Town and the northeast portion of Brookhaven Town. The districts would also be renamed, with Thiele serving Assembly District 1 and Losquardro serving Assembly District 2. “Though I’m not supportive by the process by which the redistricting is done, I don’t have a problem with the result,” said Assemblyman Thiele, calling the process partisan. “The changes in Long Island’s population have resulted in changes to the district, and the new redistricting would put my district within .1% of the ideal population distribution.” The New York State Legislative Task Force on

Demographic Research and Reapportionment proposed the changes to balance out the population in each of the districts. The results of the 2010 Census indicated that the two East End districts had a higher number of people than the state average. If the proposal is enacted, Thiele would lose just under 14,000 people to put his district population at 128,929. A public hearing will take place to discuss the redistricting at 11 a.m. on February 9 at the William H. Rogers Legislative Building of the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppague. It would then have to be approved by the State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The plan could be in effect by the November 2012 elections.

Helicopters Arriving Here on Cat’s Paws? By Kelly Laffey Some Long Island residents subject to the deafening, foundation-rattling noise of helicopters may soon instead hear a collective sigh of relief. The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to issue mandatory instructions that would require helicopters to fly over Long Island Sound for most of the way here in an attempt to lessen the cacophony over some residential areas. According to Senator Chuck Schumer, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is committed to having the plans by Memorial

Day, with the hopes of putting them into effect by the Fourth of July. The mandate would require that helicopters fly north of Long Island at an altitude of at least 2,500 feet. “Secretary LaHood’s strong and unequivocal statement should serve as a wake-up call to the helicopter industry,” Schumer said, as reported in The Wall Street Journal. “Long Island will not continue to be the Wild West for low flying, disruptive and noisy helicopters.” However, the plan has met from a wide array of criticism, especially from residents who believe that the orders do not tackle the issue

of helicopters that would have to cross over the North Fork to go to the Hamptons. Depending upon the flight paths, the helicopters flying from the Long Island Sound to the South Fork could be relegated to a small area, subjecting select residents to the majority of the noise. The Eastern Region Helicopter Council (ERHC) has echoed those concerns, citing a similar attempt by Schumer in 2007 to lessen helicopter noise by restricting flights to the North Shore. “This (2007) restricted flight plan resulted (continued on page 23)

Who’s Here By Kelly Laffey Sag Harbor’s Harborfrost is on the horizon, but no idyllic winter scene is complete without images of Christmas classics Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer. The work of Riverhead resident and acclaimed animator Don Duga brought the two to life for several generations through the iconic television specials. Duga’s memories of Frosty, however, conjure up images that mesh with the East End’s uncharacteristically warm winter. “My end of Frosty was done in the heat of one of the worst summers, so I think of sweating over the (story) board,” laughs Duga. In the artistic world, Duga is as heralded as any celebrity who makes his summer home in the Hamptons. On top of his success, he is noted for his highly approachable demeanor and his hands-on involvement in the East End art world. Born in Southern California, Duga has always considered himself to be an artist. He was educated at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, where he met and was inspired by legendary artist Don Graham, who taught Disney animators, most notably those working on Snow White, how to make their characters more lifelike. Though Duga admits that he didn’t realize it at the time, Graham was a brilliant teacher. And as Duga learned the trade, Graham recognized his student’s talent. “He (Graham) told me that I should get paid for my drawings,” Duga said. Those simple words from an esteemed colleague were all Duga needed to begin his artistic career. Duga went on to work at UPA (United Productions of America) Studios in Burbank, where he honed his animation techniques and worked on such shows as “Mr. Magoo.” Duga then left for San Francisco, as he took a job with Davidson Films and learned the technical side of animating, including how to operate a camera. However, most of the larger, commercial animating studios in the 1960s were based in New York, and Duga moved east and worked for Pelican Films before taking a job in Milan, Italy with Cartoon Films. It was there that Duga met fellow artist Irra Verbitsky, and the two quickly became inseparable. They eventually moved back to New York, and Duga began freelancing for a variety of studios, including Rankin/Bass Productions, the creators of Frosty and Rudolph. In 1976, Duga and Verbitsky founded Polestar Films and Associated Arts, Ltd., a

Don Duga,

The two also rose to the top of the world of educational television for their work on “Sesame Street,” one of the Polestar’s first jobs. Duga and Verbitsky wrote many of the stories. They would pitch their ideas to the show’s creators and then direct the chosen episodes. Duga notes that Verbitsky’s “Fruta Manzana” episode and accompanying song, which teaches children to eat fruit, was shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art as the best episode in 10 years of the series. Polestar Films also produced a variety of commercial advertisements, including some for the Hostess Company. Lovers of the snack cakes can credit the studio for the brand’s iconic Twinkie the Kid, King Ding Dong and Captain Cupcake, all of whom dominated Hostess commercials from 1972 until about 1982. For his work, Duga has traveled to Annecy, France numerous times for the International Animation Film Festival. “It’s like the Academy Awards of Animation,” says Duga. He has meticulously documented his trips to Annecy with a hand-drawn scrapbook that reads as a fun and candid adventure. With watercolored paintings of people and events as opposed to photographs,—and lighthearted conversation bubbles for Duga to further document the highlights of the trips—the book reflects Duga’s signature whimsical and colorful style. It is no surprise, either, that Duga and Verbitsky are also inspired by music. Recently, they have been working on a variety of small films. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Duga’s short Love is set to music by the group Miles to Dayton. In addition, Duga and Verbitsky teach at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. “We both came in during the early stages of the animation department,” says Duga, noting that the school has grown and is now fully accredited. In fact, Duga often calls on former students to help him with Polestar projects, especially in an increasingly digital world. “I still do the things the way I’ve always done them,” says Duga of technology, though he does marvel at the speed with which modern methods allow him to work. He often takes on an assistant to help him transpose his animations onto the computer. His passion remains the artistic process, and Duga is always excited to introduce new creative methods into his work. Most recently, Duga and Verbitsky were asked to work at a

The Man Behind Frosty

“Having our own production studio gives us the freedom to create things.” New York-based studio that has produced hundreds of animated films, television shows and commercials. “Irra is a good artist, she has a good eye. We balance each other out,” says Duga. Duga and Verbitsky originally created Polestar Films to specialize in educational titles, but the company has since created a variety of productions spanning multiple genres. “Having our own production studio gives us the freedom to create things,” says Duga. Larger-scale films often require an army of animators and writers to devise a story and see it to fruition. Though Duga enjoys and appreciates being a part of a team, he likes how Polestar studios allows him to be more involved in the creative process—from brainstorming to animating to directing. Among the more prestigious awards the duo has received is the Carnegie Medal for Owen, originally a children’s book by Scholastic, which was narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker.

S##T Hamptons Tourists Say

There is a huge thing happening on the Internet right now, where people are making videos called, “S### people say.” Among my favorites are, “S### Asian Dads Say” and “S### Sorority Girls Say.” Just this morning somebody came out with one called, “S### Long Islanders Say.” I think that we need to come up with one called, “S### Hamptons tourists say.” The following is my script: “Is this wine local?” “Is this potato local?” “Is this honey local?” “Are these bananas local?” “You know what I’m going to do this summer? I’m going to learn how to surf. I’m so getting into surfing lately.” “Oh my God you know who I just saw? ALEC BALDWIN!!!” “The waves are sick this morning bro. Had an awesome surfing session this morn bro dude.” “You know what’s a really cool place that not a lot of people know about? Montauk.” “You know what’s a really cool place that not

a lot of people know about? Shelter Island” “I just want to be local and do something chill tonight. You know, be with normal people, how about we check out the Surf Lodge?” “I met the hottest Polish waitress last night at Nick and Toni’s” “I met the hottest Russian waitress at 75 Main last night.” “I met the hottest Brazilian nanny in Sag Harbor last night.” “I met the hottest East Hampton local last night. No really, like she is from here, like grew up in East Hampton, bro. No dude, she speaks English.” “I can totally tell the difference between this corn and the corn in the city.” “You know what we should do? We should start a restaurant out here. We’d make so much money.” “You know what we should do? We should start a nightclub out here. We’d make sooooo much money.” “It must be so easy to live out here yearround. I’m totally thinking about moving out here year-round and becoming a farmer.” “I can’t talk, I’m on my way to yoga.” “I can’t talk, I’m on my way to spin class.” “Hello? Hello? Damn reception.” I’m in Quiiiiooooooooggggguueeee.” “You know what we should do tonight? We should have a bonfire on the beach. You know, just chill out.” “Charlie got a DWI? Really? But he only had like seven beers!” “People are so nice out here.” “I found this total dive bar, it’s a complete secret. Have you ever heard of Cyril’s?”

New Year’s Eve wedding to create drawings of the guests. Highlighting their teamwork, Duga drew outlines of the subjects while Verbitsky brought them to life with watercolors. The idea was a hit. Motivated in his professional life, but possessing a refreshingly laid-back demeanor, Duga really does epitomize his Southern California roots. But he has adjusted well to life on the East Coast. “Wait a second, this is not so bad,” Duga laughs, referring to this year’s mild winter. Duga used to come out to Amagansett, but he soon discovered and fell in love with the North Fork. “It’s nice for swimming, there’s a nice community and there’s a lot of nice families,” Duga says of his East End residence, which he describes as closer to Baiting Hollow than Riverhead. Duga has also become increasingly involved with the East End art scene. He has taught animation classes in Northport, Shelter Island and Greenport, and once hosted an ‘Ani-Jam,’ an artistic jam session where participants would draw characters and Duga would set the animations to music. He continues to work on films, and also displays vibrantly painted stills of his animations at local art galleries. Duga’s next show is the weekend of February 11 at the Art and Soul Gallery in Eastport. While the East End waits for the opportunity to create a real Frosty the Snowman, Duga’s compelling artwork alleviates the problem, as he brings the beloved character —and many other charming scenes—to life.

On the other hand, I flew in from Rio de Janeiro last Friday and it all depends how you look at this data. People spent all day Saturday at home in Southampton are either getting out recovering more and recovering from jet lag. When a friend came more and thus making the ridership go up, or over to cheer me up he pointed out that there people are too cheap to drive meaning things is no jet lag between East Hampton and Rio are getting worse. SUPER BOWL STANDSTILL As advertised last week, giant TV screens were set up on all the platforms between 6 and 10 p.m. last Sunday so that straphangers could watch the game at all times. The TVs were also tuned into the game in the subway cars themselves. All together we mustered more than 80 TVs on loan to us from P. C. Richards in Southampton and our hat is off to them. Of course, the trains were kept at a standstill during those hours. A few people who said they had to go somewhere just got hooted down and told to shut up. MADONNA REHEARSED HERE The Hampton Subway was the proud host of all the practice sessions done by Madonna and her 90-person dance and music performer group during the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl halftime show. We couldn’t tell you about this until now for fear that our famous Bridgehampton resident would be mobbed underground. Her practice sessions were done in Warehouse No. 33 that you enter through big doorways in the darkness of the subway tunnel between East Hampton and Bridgehampton on the south side. It is to be designated as a State Historic Shrine to the Material Girl from now on and it will not be occupied by anything other than the few bits of glitter that Madonna and her troupe left behind until the end of time. in a highly concentrated and condensed flight pattern for all helicopters over the north shore,” Jeffery Smith, the chairman of the ERHC, said according to The Wall Street Journal. “This is a misguided plan on every level.” In addition, Senator Schumer has said that the FAA is considering similar legislation to apply to routes over the Atlantic Ocean. However, south shore residents are also concerned about what areas the helicopters would cross over in order to arrive at their landing pads. In a December 2011 press release, the Quiet Skies Coalition lamented that southerly routes will likely require helicopters to fly over Georgica and Wainscott.

NORTH FORK Chef Keith Luce at James Beard House By Marianna Scandole Keith Luce, renowned chef/co-owner of Luce + Hawkins at the gorgeous Jedediah Hawkins Inn in Jamesport, was the star of the evening at the James Beard House in New York on January 25 for the “East End Country Getaway” dinner. Luce took to James Beard because of Beard’s penchant for local ingredients and because Beard’s passion for food is directly attributed to his Oregon upbringing, rather than being professionally trained. They both valued sustainability, which was the focus of this evening’s dinner. Luce has been involved with the foundation for years, first cooking at the house in 1996 and many times since then. He won the James Beard Foundation’s award for Rising Star Chef of the Year in 1998, as he was the original chef of Spruce, a heralded Chicago restaurant. Luce also participated in the annual Chefs and Champagne last year on the South Fork. Chef Luce was surprisingly calm, as the staff buzzed around and guests poured through the kitchen. How he turned out over 80 meals while cordially greeting everyone is beyond me! Luce stressed the importance of planning. “The first step is to really plan the menu and (the contingency plan)…Planning is (even) more important than the execution.” Chef Luce’s staff for this event consisted of two members of his staff from Luce + Hawkins, Taylor Katelyn Knapp, Sous Chef and Zachary Rude, cook, as well as old-time friends, Joe Hafner and Matt Varga. The menu was comprised of all local East

End ingredients, such as: Cresent Farm duck (Aquebogue), pork from pigs raised on the Luce family farm and scallops from Peconic Bay. The intent was to “tell the story of the season (of our region) through food,” said Chef Luce. He boasted that the scallops were “like nature’s candy – so fresh, they were swimming yesterday.” Attention to detail was key with this extensive, “risk-taking” menu. My personal favorites were the braised Duck Pierogi inspired by the chef’s wife, Marta Luce, and beautifully paired with Luce’s own blend of wine – NoFo Red. “I like to keep things lively. This is the first time in my career that I’ve allowed my restaurant to have signature items,” Luce shared. The passed hors d’oeuvres showcased a few of these signature dishes, such as my two favorites, the ever-popular NoFo Duck Wings and mini burgers. Seriously, the best burger I have ever had! I also spoke with Izabela Wojcik, the Director of House Programming for the James Beard Foundation. The foundation simply states, “Musicians have Carnegie Hall, and chefs have the Beard House,” – the best description I have heard yet. James Beard, “the father of American gastronomy,” was a phenomenal teacher, cookbook author and television personality. Beard felt that cooking was a science everyone should partake in, not just a women’s chore. The James Beard Foundation is a non-for-profit organization established in 1986, shortly after Beard’s death.

Located in Greenwich Village, the historic James Beard House was preserved through the efforts of Julia Child and the culinary community. It is used to showcase various chefs nationwide and is the country’s only historic center dedicated to advancing the culinary arts. The house is always hopping; hosting tastings, lectures, workshops and food-related art exhibits. The foundation gives annual food industry awards and culinary school scholarships. Becoming a member of the organization provides perks such as Beard House dining discounts, newsletter subscriptions and networking opportunities. Satiated guests went home with goodies and discounts from popular East End locales, including Casual Point Limo, Luce + Hawkins, Jedediah Hawkins Inn, The Village Cheese Shop, and Lieb, Paumanok, Bedell and Macari wineries. Luce believes that the new generation should focus more on traditions, heritage and learning from past generations. The Beard House is a haven where traditions and pleasures of the table are preserved. Whether you’re a foodie or just want a good meal, the James Beard House will provide an unforgettable evening, a celebration with new and old friends.

It’s Valentine’s Day weekend and all the shops are dressed to kiss…the restaurants are getting ready for all the sweetheart dinners they will be serving. A Happy Valentine’s Day to all my special friends and family. Let’s get shopping! Just in time for Valentine’s Day gift giving,

Give Jewelry... By Stacy Dermont The act of giving jewelry probably dates back to prehistory. Some of the earliest known ornaments were fertility amulets carved from stone, wood and seeds. I suggest, for that special someone, that rather than setting about hand carving a very special charm, that you stop by your local jewelry store. Helen Ficalora, who runs the fine jewelry store named after her fine self in Bridgehampton offers this solid advice: “Jewelry is the way to a woman’s heart much like food is said to be the way to a man’s heart. My advice for selecting a Valentine’s Day gift is to give something that is a little sparkly and heart-shaped. I love the romantic notion of creating a special event around Valentine’s Day that includes a gift of jewelry as the ‘icing on the cake.’ My favorite is my baby heart with a diamond in yellow, white or rose gold. I love hearts and have many choices in my collection. Diamond-encrusted charms are hot right now. Diamond staking rings and bands are also great.” And here are some “magic” tricks to choosing the right piece from moi: For women A. Steal her jewelry – temporarily. Face it, you don’t really know what she likes. But – if you really pay attention – you can note which pieces she wears often. Take a few of her favorites along with you, or photograph them, and show them to your jeweler. He or she can then suggest a complementary piece. B. Hire a spy. You don’t know what she likes but her sister and best friend do. Ask for their help. Bribe them with chocolate to keep this embargo a secret. C. Give a gift certificate. It may not be romantic, but it never fails to provide just the right piece. For men. Consider all the possibilities: earrings, neck chain, bracelet, wristwatch, ring, pocket watch, watch fob, money clip. Present with a kiss.

I lived in a very small town in south central Nebraska until I was 13 years old. Nebraska has very extreme weather conditions. Vegetable gardens were grown, but it seemed that flowers were luxuries that were indulged minimally. My grandmother had a huge patch of lily of the valley on the north side of her house that was, indeed, luxurious when it bloomed. The small pearl-like flowers hiding in the luscious green leaves provided an eagerly anticipated fragrant dalliance for me, as I picked up sticks on that side of the house before grandpa mowed the lawn with his push mower. I have loved lily of the valley since and have always felt it was somewhat magical. (Not sure why.) Shortly after we bought our house in Sag Harbor, we rescued a maple tree from a tangle of abandoned trees and shrubs and a couple of shoots of lily of the valley came along in the move. They showed themselves the spring after we planted the tree, and have since grown into a sizeable patch in the front yard. About the same time, the next door neighbor gave

Does eating chocolate containing that strange property, phenylethylamine, a chemical stimulant released by the brain offer a high level of passion? Studies have shown that it does and there are few better ways to end a Valentine’s Day dinner than with a dessert made from chocolate. I’ve always loved chocolate desserts, they are fairly straightforward. I love a dark, moist flourless chocolate cake, unadorned by icings and creams. It may not look magazine picture perfect, but it tastes divine and isn’t too sweet. Chocolate Mousse Basque with its rich gelatinous texture is the best chocolate mousse I ever tasted. It’s perfect party fare that can be made one or two days ahead. My husband loves bread pudding of any stripe. I think he will be pleased with a simple and satisfying Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding. Working with chocolate can be tricky. Care should be taken when melting or it can turn lumpy if heat is too high. Break chocolate into pieces and melt in a slow oven or over very low heat in the top of a double boiler. Whether you’re melting chocolate or someone’s heart, it’s time to splurge on chocolate desserts. ELIZABETH DAVID’S FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE Yield: 1 8-inch cake 4 ounces imported bittersweet chocolate 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon brewed espresso (or strong coffee) 1 tablespoons brandy 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup ground almonds 3 large eggs, separated 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar Confectioner’s sugar for decoration Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Butter an 8-inch springform pan and dust with flour or breadcrumbs. 1. Break up chocolate in small pieces and put in a heavy saucepan with vanilla, coffee and brandy. Melt over very low heat, or place in a small heatproof bowl and melt in a 250-degree oven. When mixture appears soft, remove from heat and stir to a smooth cream. Return saucepan to burner and add butter, sugar and almonds and heat slowly until butter is melted. Transfer to a mixing bowl. 2. In a small bowl beat egg yolks until slightly thickened and lemon colored, about 3-4 minutes, and stir into the chocolate mixture. 3. In a bowl of electric mixer or in bowl with electric hand beaters, beat egg whites until foamy. Add cream of tartar, adjust speed to medium high and continue beating until egg whites are very firm and stiff peaks form. Fold about one-fourth of the beaten whites into the chocolate mixture and stir to soften. Carefully fold in remaining whites until thoroughly incorporated. 4. Transfer batter into the prepared pan and bake in the middle of the oven for 45 minutes. The cake will have some cracks on top and a cake tester inserted in the center will not come out clean.

The above recipe is adapted from Elizabeth David’s French Provincial Cooking. CHOCOLATE CROISSANT BREAD PUDDING The American Dairy Association is the inspiration for this pleasing recipe which is baked in a bain marie. Serves 6 to 8 2 tablespoons butter, softened 3 large (2 1/2 ounces each) day-old croissants 3 thick (about 1 ounce each) slices of French bread 3 1/2 cups milk 3 eggs 3/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoons vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 ounces good quality dark sweet or bittersweet chocolate, broken into 1/2 inch pieces Preheat oven to 350°F Butter a 1 1/2 quart shallow baking dish 1. Cut croissants and bread into 3/4 inch pieces; place in large bowl. Pour milk over the contents and let stand for 15 minutes. 2. Beat eggs with sugar until thoroughly combined, and add vanilla extract and salt. 3. Stir in chocolate pieces. With a rubber spatula, scoop into the milk and bread mixture. Stir carefully. Pour into prepared baking dish. Place baking dish in

a shallow roasting pan (bain marie). Pour hot water into the roasting pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the dish. Bake 45 to 50 minutes, or until pudding is golden brown and set. Cool on wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. CHOCOLATE MOUSSE BASQUE Adding coffee to the chocolate mixture greatly enhances the deep rich flavor of this mousse. Serves 10-12 4 eggs, separated 6 ounces imported semisweet chocolate 2 tablespoons strong coffee 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 3 tablespoons sugar 1 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup heavy cream, for garnish 1. Place whites in a large mixing bowl or bowl of electric mixer; yolks in a small bowl and allow whites to come to room temperature. 2. Break up chocolate in small pieces and put in a heavy saucepan. Add coffee and melt over very low heat, or place in a small heatproof bowl and melt in a 250-degree oven about 10 minutes. When mixture softens, remove from heat and stir to a smooth cream. Stir 1 tablespoon butter at a time into the hot chocolate mixture. Mix well. Add egg yolks, one at a time, and stir until thoroughly incorporated. 3. In a bowl of electric mixer or in mixing bowl with hand electric beaters, beat egg whites until foamy. Add cream of tartar, and continue to beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, one tablespoon at a time. Continue beating about 1

Red Velvetness...

are either too salty or too sweet. Definitely not the case here. We opted to have shrimp added to the salad, and it was freshly grilled with a subtle spicy kick. In addition to their regular fare, 75 Main will also offer a special Valentine’s Day Menu on Saturday, February 11. Available all day, the selections include Seared Maine Sea Scallop, Potato Gnocchi, Sauteed Striped Bass – which, with the accompanying cumin spiced artichoke puree, butter glazed yellow romano beans and blood orange emulsion, may be my favorite option – and Pan Roasted Lamb Loin. Our server mentioned that the Penne Primavera, which is on the regular menu and includes sauteed zucchini, yellow squash, red roasted pepper, diced tomato and garlic in a white wine olive oil, was

another popular dish. Interesting to note, too, is that the restaurant is very kid-friendly with a $10 Children’s Menu. Now, onto the important, Valentine-y parts of a meal: Wine and dessert. I chose to have an Italian Pinot Grigio, and my mom went with the Chateau D’Esclans Whispering Angel Rose from Cote du Provence, France. Natasha, the maître d’, noted that the Whispering Angel was a popular summer choice because of its crisp, light taste. But, it’s also a perfect, not-too-filling lunch option. And the pink hue suits the upcoming romantic holiday. At Natasha’s request, we had a taste of the Sauvigon Blanc, which hails from the up-and-coming New Zealand wine scene. Again, the citrus flavors make this an excellent choice for lunch, especially when paired with the signature Chop Salad. The dessert menu included a wide range of decadent options – and the February 11 menu will add Red Velvet Lava Cake and Chocolate Mousse Cheese Cake to the mix. In the interest of Valentine’s Day, I went with the Red Velvet cake. The usual option on the menu is sans lava, but I could not imagine a tastier cake. It was divine, the body of the cake was moist, and the thin layer of icing added a touch of sweetness. It was topped with freshly whipped cream that artfully blended all of the flavors together. Truthfully, I’m still daydreaming about that cake. I know where I’ll be come Valentine’s Day weekend. 75 Main, 75 Main Street, Southampton. 631-2837575. www.75main.com. Additional location coming soon in Delray Beach, Florida.

By Kelly Laffey I’ve always marvelled how people in countries outside of the United States have lunch as their main meal, and dinner almost as an afterthought. Why is that? I hear it’s healthier – the whole ‘you shouldn’t eat four hours before you go to sleep’ rule is definitely at play – but it must be one of those things that’s lost in translation as you cross the Atlantic. Still, the idea is intriguing. So, with Valentine’s Day on the horizon, I chose to dine at 75 Main, one of the few Hamptons hotspots on the forefront of the movement to bring white-tablecloth, romantic service to the oft-ignored midday meal. I arrived at the Southampton restaurant, and was pleasantly surprised to see that the menu included a wide variety of light and hearty dishes, as well as savory breakfast items. In the mood for a more traditional lunch – i.e. a sandwich – I went with the Calabrese Panini. The Panini, with grilled chicken, mozzarella, red roasted peppers and a pesto sauce, could have easily been mistaken with something genuinely made in Italy. There was the perfect amount of pesto – enough to add its distinctive flavor to the sandwich without seeping through the bread to create a soggy mess. My mom sampled the popular Chop Salad, which comes with gorgonzola, red roasted pepper, candied walnuts, cranraisins and red onions, all expertly tossed with chopped lettuce and a balsamic vinaigrette. I have to say – having the lettuce chopped really makes a difference. The salad is so much easier to eat! The ingredients were fresh, and the candied walnuts were toasted to perfection. I hate when I order a healthy salad and the walnuts

ART FAR FROM THE HAMPTONS PART 3: ISLA MUJERES, MEXICO Last week’s “Art Commentary” featured the art found on a small Caribbean island (population: 12,000) near Cancun; such art was mostly part of the environment found in the designs of hotels and murals. The presence of local artists and art works is not pervasive, however, which is surely a shame. This is not to suggest that there are no artists or art inhabiting the island. Two artists who have lived in Isla Mujeres for a long time are Guillermo Espinasse and an older gentleman who makes paper mache objects in his studio near the town’s cemetery. Espinasse and his wife are from Argentina, but have a local East End connection, having lived in East Hampton for a few years on their boat. Espinasse has also shown at Greenport’s deCordova Studio & Gallery. We see his paintings from time to time in Isla Mujeres as well, most recently finding a self portrait of the artist with a guitar. It was hard to find other artists who lived and worked on the island, yet we persevered and came

HONORING THE ARTIST by Marion W. Weiss

Honoring The Artist: Janet Fish

There’s something archetypical and everlasting about the medium of glass (it’s been around since 3500 BC), and those qualities strike you first when looking at paintings by cover artist Janet Fish. We can understand why Fish used to paint images of glass bottles and vases in her early work (i.e. “Wine and Cheese Glasses,” 1975) when she was first developing her special style. This week’s cover contains Fish’s signature glass, but adds flowers (roses) and Russian dolls. The unique aspects of glass are many; some are obvious, some not. For example, its ability to reflect light is certainly one Fish has effectively incorporated. Her depiction of old pieces from yesteryear also evoke nostalgia, even though glass signifies a modernist approach in contemporary design and architecture. Glass also recalls various practical purposes, which make it a pervasive part of our lives: its use in eyeglasses, containers and windows, to name a few. Our own subjective connection to glass may also play a part in our penchant for Fish’s art, including the glass we collect from local beaches, weathered and smooth, suggesting stories we can only imagine.

When we look at Fish’s still lives of glass (or her other subjects like fruit and flowers), we are immediately engaged; we can’t help but imagine who owned such glassware, although we know they may be the artist’s. Thus, the glass objects become the starting point for a scenario in our heads. Certainly, we are engaged by the aesthetics of the pieces as well: their complex composition, muted color and reflecting light. While these formal elements are quite extraordinary, we begin to notice Fish’s contradictions: both the fragility and strength of the glass; the organized yet subtle spontaneous images (tiny lollipops are placed in one painting, almost as an afterthought); freedom and containment. Consider that most of Fish’s objects are positioned next to each other, but their liberation is apparent, as if they could fly away at any minute. Even so, two works particularly reinforce the opposite idea with a package of wrapped fruit and an image of bananas that are only half-wrapped. It’s as if the fruit was fighting to get out of their plastic holdings. Another image is especially provocative. A bottle of olives is encased in liquid, yet it too may be entrapped, just like the animal parts found in Damien Hirst’s work where the liquid is formaldehyde. While Fish’s aesthetics are strictly her own, she had many sources of inspiration, like her family (her mother, Florence Whistler Fish, was a sculptor and potter, and her grandfather, Clark Voorhees, was an American impressionist painter). We can also look to her education as a likely motivation; she was one of the first women artists to obtain her MFA from Yale where her fellow classmates included Chuck Close, Portrait of Janet Fish copyright © 2002 Jay Stock

ART COMMENTARY

up with two special people. One was Jorge Fenton, a gemologist who has a place at the Hotel Villa Rolandi called Kimberley Art and Gem Gallery, a stunning shop on the island’s south end. He has been creating necklaces, some with gems, that are really art nouveau sculptures resembling flowers. They, too, are stunning. But Fenton has taken his creations one step further, hoping to establish workshops around the world that will teach women to make similar necklaces and keep the profits. The gallery also displays work from diverse artists, including German-born Sabina de la Parra. Her unique combination of coffee and acrylic makes arresting abstract designs that mix human and animal forms. As de la Parra is currently living a few miles away from the Hotel Villa Rolandi, a visit to the restaurant/museum she runs with her husband was in order. Called Capitan Dulche, it sits back from a side road, isolated yet accessible to tourist boats which visit the grounds and beach. The artist’s work is on the wall in the restaurant overlooking the water. Again, her abstract designs predominate with some conveying overlapping images that are dense and detailed. Others are more subtle, where paint sweeps across the canvas. On a hill near the restaurant is an interesting installation composed of copper sculptures. All the pieces are musicians playing instruments and seem incongruous in the tropical setting. Yet the effect works. It’s clear de la Parra loves art, noting that the sculptor stayed at her house for two years while she created the pieces. A few miles up the road is a Mayan ruin celebrating the goddess, Ixchel. While the Spanish discovered Isla Mujeres in the 16th century, Ixchel had lived long before that and was known as the goddess of childbirth and medicine. Unfortunately, Hurricane

Isla Mujeres

Gilbert destroyed most of the structure that was dedicated to her during the 1970s; today only a bit of the foundation remains. Even so, we can appreciate its craftsmanship, artistic detail and extraordinary setting by the sea. What is also special is the sculpture garden that shares space with the ruin, a group of works that were commissioned from diverse sources; mostly the pieces come from Mexican artists, but a few are from countries like Finland. Another uniqueness: one would expect that the sculptures would reflect the mythology of the ruins, yet they do not. Instead, they are abstract works created in metal. Thus, the odd juxtaposition of the ancient ruins with contemporary sculpture. For more information on the artists, contact Sabina de la Parra at marinacapitandulche@hotmail.com or Jorge Fenton at kimberleyartandgems@gmail.com.

Nancy Graves and Brice Marden. Yale instructor Josef Albers’ color course no doubt also added to her expertise. Yet Fish was also influenced by the then-dominant New York School of Abstract Expressionists as were other emerging artists in the 1950s. According to art historians, such influence “reflects the aesthetic process of the action painter, in such characteristics as ‘all-over’ composition and painterly style,” even though Fish and others did not necessarily create abstract imagery and may not agree with this assessment. Conversely, however, Fish has stated that her still life genre offers the best possibility for painters to include both realism and abstractions. This appears true; at first glance her works seem representational. Yet there’s a glint of magic and mystery that prevails, pushing her objects into another realm. It’s often said that Alex Katz inspired Fish as well; this critic can understand that comparison although Katz does figurative works. Both artists use line in a delicate and definitive way to evoke distinctive demeanors of their objects. No matter what Fish’s inspirations have been. The work stands on its own. Ms. Fish is represented by DC Moore Gallery in New York. Call 212-247-2111. ADDITION: Last week’s “Honoring the Artist” featured Pamela Topham who will be in a group show at Ashawagh Hall, opening February 11. Her website is www. pamelatopham.com

By Stacy Dermont I’m all for earthy, ethnic hole-in-the-wall eateries – but sometimes a white tablecloth lunch is just the thing. Bobby Van’s Steakhouse on Main Street in Bridgehampton offers that kind of classy service seven days a week. I often go there for business meetings and for fun meetings over food and drinks. It’s a good standby for dinner and perfect for Valentine’s Day eating and quaffing… I don’t generally do steak for lunch, something lighter appeals. Bobby Van’s Executive Chef John R. Stella offers plenty of options. My co-editrix, Kelly Laffey, joined me for lunch there on Thursday. We decided to start with soups, or rather, in Kelly’s case, bisque. She found her Lobster Bisque “bubbling hot, smooth and delicious.” I started with the Asparagus Puree, which was simple in the best way – smooth and deep green with crisp-tender cross-cut slices of fresh asparagus. Just the right amount of salt inspired me to eat every drop. Bobby Van’s portions run to the generous side. I moved on to the Lobster Roll. Interestingly, it’s served upright on the plate, ringed by a colorful sauce. In fact there’s no roll – it’s a wrap.

Restaurant Review: Bobby Van’s

Soup’s on!

Unfortunately the wrap itself is dry and bland, but the interior is all that it should be – luscious lobster and crunchy diced celery. Kelly quite liked her Turkey Wrap served on a charger-sized plate, noting happily that “They didn’t overdo it on the mayo.” The avocado, tomato, lettuce,

cabbage, alfalfa sprouts and turkey breast meat worked for her. She also quite enjoyed her pile of slender, salty French fries. Since we had an afternoon of editing ahead of us back at the office, we chose to forgo drinks, but for future reference noted that the Wine List includes local faves Wolffer, Raphael and Lieb... You can see Bobby Van’s full wine list and menu on their website. We were tempted by the Dessert Menu which included Cheesecake, Flourless Chocolate Cake, Ice Cream, Sorbet and – my son’s favorite – a Banana Split – but we were strong and returned to the office sans gateau et crème glacée. We also passed on cappuccino and espresso, editing Dan’s Papers keeps us on our toes more than any caffeine hit could. LETTERS SELFISH CONDUCT ABOARD COSTA CONCORDIA Dear Dan, Apparently many of the crew aboard the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which grounded off the coast of Tuscany, attempted to save their own lives without trying to help others. That sort of selfish conduct is in direct contrast to what happened aboard the RMS Titanic 100 years ago. After that ship struck an iceberg, its captain ordered a woman and children first evacuation policy, which the crew assiduously followed. And so did the passengers, who were on a ship with lifeboats that could accommodate only a little over half of those on board. Benjamin Guggenheim spent his final hours changing into formal eveningwear in order to die with dignity as a gentleman. Isador Straus (the co-owner of Macy’s) was offered a chance to get into a lifeboat because of his advanced age but he refused. John Jacob Astor IV helped load his pregnant wife onto a lifeboat and then stepped back to join the rest of the men on the Titanic’s deck. The crew of the ship also behaved courageously. The engineers and assistant engineers stuck to their posts and kept the power on and lights burning until almost the very last moment. All 34 of them perished. The vessel’s eight-man orchestra kept playing their music to keep the passengers from panicking, only stopping when the incline of the ship made further playing impossible. They also did not survive. And the Titanic’s captain, in the great tradition of the sea, went down with his ship. Courage and discipline were in great evidence among those on board the Titanic the night the ship took its final plunge. Sadly, these two character traits were in short supply in the Costa Concordia tragedy. Sincerely, Martin H. Levinson Riverhead With a computer directing its course I believe the captain was hired for his appearance, not his skill. –DR COPS ROCK Dear Dan, As I was getting ready to leave my desk at Dan’s Papers Thursday night my husband called very upset about a wounded dog he’d spotted. He called me as he was standing in the rain on Stoney Hill Road in Bridgehampton/Noyac area trying to coax a limping, very sad looking dog out of the road. He had seen something in the distance as he drove and thought it was a small deer. When his headlights hit the figure it was obviously a large, dark colored dog, about 60-70 lbs. It wouldn’t come to him and was walking slowly in the road, tail between it’s legs, limping with some sort of lump on it’s back or side. Being an ardent animal lover my husband left our dog in his truck and carefully pursued this dog to at least get it out of the road if not try and catch it to take it for help. He called me for ideas. Knowing a hurt and lost dog could turn vicious on him I cautioned him to just try and keep the dog in sight and calm and I’d call Animal Control. I picked up my office phone and called Animal Control but since it was 5:45 p.m. I didn’t get anyone right away and was directed to Southampton Town police front desk, I called that number and got the desk sergeant. He dutifully asked all the correct questions; what’s the cross street, what direction is it heading, does it appear to have a collar, how big, what color etc. I relayed my husbands answers to the officer but when I hung up with both of them I figured the dog wasn’t going to get much help that night.

As we’d talked to the police the dog finally left the middle of the road and wandered into the backyard of a house and out of sight. My husband tried knocking on the door but got no answer. I knew he couldn’t stay out there much longer with our dog in his truck parked on the side of a dark, curvy road. I was only about eight minutes behind him and planned on stopping along the way myself to see if I could find the dog and because I guessed the Southampton Town Police had more important things to do and this wouldn’t get much attention from them. On my way home as I approached Stoney Hill Road I saw flashing police lights – I slowed down and came upon a Southampton Town Police car, search light mounted on top and trained into the woods, slowly making it’s way along the area where we had reported seeing the dog. He waved me on when I came to a stop but in my rearview mirror I saw him stop the car and pan the light all around and it looked like he might have gotten out of the car. My hopes that the dog would find help rose. Later as we sat in my warm house with my dog’s head on my feet I had to think about that dog and that police officer. I can say I was honestly quite impressed and later that night, as I read on Facebook about the terrible Water Mill house fire I thought of the Town Police again. My guess is that same officer who a few hours before had been scanning the woods for a missing dog was on the scene at that fire dealing with a much more potentially horrific outcome. All in a nights work for a local cop. Just had to give a big thumbs up to Southampton Town Police especially on this particular cold and rainy Thursday night in January. Ellen Dioguardi Dan’s Papers Assistant to the Publisher These men and women are heroes. –DR Thanks Dan Dear Dan, Thank you for the picture and coverage of The East End Classic Boat Society’s 2011 raffle boat

Send your letters to askdan@danspapers.com (e-mails only, please) winner on your photo page in your paper. We have begun working on this year’s raffle boat, a Swampscott dory, which we will be exhibiting and selling raffle tickets for at fairs and festivals in the summer and fall. Bill Good SIX OF ONE… Dear Dan, With little media attention late last week, President Obama sent his official request to Congress for once again raising the debt ceiling – this time by $1.2 trillion. When President Obama was inaugurated on January 20, 2009, our national debt stood at $10.6 trillion. As of December 29, 2011 – it stood at $15.1 trillion. Under President Obama, the national debt has increased by $4.5 trillion to date. Contrast that with former President Bush who increased the national debt by $4.8 trillion over eight years. Increasing the debt by another $1.2 trillion, which by coincidence would take us to Election Day in November as proposed by President Obama would bring our national debt to $16.4 trillion. This would give President Obama the dubious distinction of raising our national debt by $5.7 trillion. This would be the most under any Presidential four-year term. No wonder many Americans are fearful of what could take place under a lame duck President Obama’s second term and are looking for an alternative. Sincerely. Larry Penner Great Neck And who do you think would be better at this? –DR

Police Blotter $40,000 Ring A $40,000 diamond ring was stolen from a closet at a house in Southampton. The woman initially thought that the ring may have been misplaced but then called police three days later after being certain the ring was stolen. She told police that she never wears the ring because it is too ostentatious. So then why own it if you never wear it? Rich people are so weird. No License A 32-year-old man was arrested in Southampton after he was caught driving without a license and under the influence of alcohol. The man originally had his driver’s license revoked because, you guessed it, he was caught with a DWI. Clever A man in Bridgehampton was arrested after he was caught taking off his boots, placing them in a shoebox that used to contain a new pair of boots, and then placing the new pair of boots on his feet. A good plan if your goal is to get arrested. Shelter Island Old Man McGumbus, 108 years old and former

World War II chemical weapons specialist, needed medical assistance after taking too many Viagra pills. Police found McGumbus passed out in his driveway wearing a robe after he knocked himself out with a baseball bat to subdue the pain. His girlfriend, 26-year-old Juliana Ramirez, called 911. Rotten Neighbor A 71-year-old woman in Montauk was arrested for the second time after she violated a court order to stay away from her neighbor. Last week she rang the doorbell and the neighbor called the police. Rotten Teens Two teenage girls were arrested in East Hampton after they were caught stealing socks, five bottles of nail polish, a pair of fake eyelashes, a pink and a white ring, earrings and skin cream. The entire total of products stolen was worth $132.94. True story. Happened last week. –David Lion Rattiner
