East End Lighthouse Tours By Maria Orlando Pietromonaco Long before sophisticated boat navigation systems like GPS, radar, chart plotters, and satellite networks existed – there were lighthouses. Throughout history mariners’ lives depended on a simple light emitted from a tower to guide them through the waters safely. As Long Island is obviously surrounded by water, lighthouses were and are a huge part of our history and culture – as well as an essential key to staying alive. There are ten lighthouses still standing (some barely) on the east end today: Long Beach Bar, Orient Point, Plum Island, Montauk Point, Little Gull, Race Rock, Cedar Island, North Dumpling, Latimer Reef, and Horton Point. Several of them are in dire need of repair and TLC, and for a long time they have been neglected. The Lighthouse Preservation Act was passed in 2000, and as many government-owned lighthouse properties were relinquished to non-profit chapters, this served as a catalyst for someone to step forward and take on the challenge. A group of likeminded individuals, local owners of construction companies, and marine contractors came together with a common vision: to preservation our maritime heritage and save these nautical structures. And so, in 2000, East End Lighthouses was born.

TH

They are a dedicated and passionate organization whose goal is the acquisition, restoration, and maintenance of our east end lighthouses. They realize the architectural and cultural significance these lighthouses possess, and are struggling to keep both their spirit and framework alive by promoting community awareness and raising much-needed funds for renovations and repair. This summer, East End Lighthouses is hosting a series of lighthouse tours to both benefit their organization and also offer the public the extraordinary experience of getting up close and personal with these maritime wonders. On Saturday, June 5, at 9:00 a.m. they are hosting the Annual Lighthouse Cruise aboard the Cross Sound Ferry to 10 Area Lighthouses in New York & Connecticut. The tour de ferry will pause at each long enough for a photo opp and a little bit o’ history. The funds raised will directly support the efforts of the organization. Other cruises are scheduled for June 26th, July 17th, August 9th, August 21st, and September 11th. Each lighthouse has its own story to tell, from its inception and creation to its sometimes sordid existence and connection to human kind. More on these lighthouses in upcoming issues...
