To the Southampton community, thank you for allowing Thos. Moser to be a part of your summer. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on Main Street in Southampton and appreciate the warm welcome we received. As summer has ended, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now time to head back to our permanent location on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. The encouragement and support we received from the moment we opened our doors was tremendous. We had the pleasure of participating in a number of community events, including the American Heart Association Gala, hosting the VIP lounge for Danâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Papers anniversary party, a charity event at Russell Simmons house and the dinner and educational event we hosted for Peconic Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. I’m Where? What They Call this Place Is What they Call this Place By Dan Rattiner The Hamptons is a hodgepodge of overlapping glaciers, landmasses, counties, proposed counties, forks, towns, villages and hamlets. As a result, people out here often refer to this place by a name that is not “the Hamptons.” Instead, they use names that are often so different from one another that sometimes you have no idea what anybody is talking about. Enter a room full of people talking about the Hamptons and in 15 minutes you can hear it referred to as “the Country,” “the East End,” “the South Fork,” “Peconic County,” “the summer place,” “Long Island,” “upstreet,” “the Point,” “the Island,” “the Hampty Hamps,” or even – and this is really backwards “the North Fork.” The really interesting thing about all this is that the term used sometimes tells you more about the person using it than the place it refers to. Here is a glossary of the names used and what that name tells you about the person who has uttered it. “We’re heading out to the Country.” Dan Rattiner’s second memoir, IN THE HAMPTONS TOO: Further Encounters with Farmers, Fishermen, Artists, Billionaires and Celebrities, is now available in hardcover wherever books are sold. This person is from the Upper East Side of Manhattan. When they had a house in Dutchess County they referred to it as “the Country.” Wherever it is that they have a house a two-hour drive from Manhattan is “the Country.” Could be anywhere, except for Philadelphia. “We’re going out to the East End.”

Sometimes the term used tells you more about the person using it than the place it refers to. Westsiders. Smart. Funny. Possibly connected with Columbia University or one of the uptown hospitals. Know history and geography well enough to be able to visualize the turning, twisty, fishtail look of the eastern end of Long Island. “We’re heading out to the South Fork.” This person is an environmentalist, a scientist, a preservationist and a history buff. He is also not necessarily from New York City. He could be from Riverhead or Stony Brook. And he knows perfectly well where the Hamptons are. But he prefers “South Fork” because his primary identity of the place is the place itself and not the people in it who are—as a matter of fact—just tram-

pling all over it. “I’m heading out to Peconic County.” This is a politician. Or someone very interested in politics. Years ago, the local people of the Hamptons tried to become a separate county by seceding from Suffolk County in which it resides. Western Suffolk was, and is, all suburbia. Eastern Suffolk is summer homes and farmland. The effort failed, so it was tried again and it failed a second time. Uttering the words “Peconic County” is an attempt to keep the concept alive. “I’m heading out to the Summer Place.” This is a share house person, under 30 with a piece of the action on alternate weekends. Could be anywhere. They live at the house, drink at the house, swim and party at the house and sneak off into the bushes at the house. They sleep in the day and so really, since it is dark when they are up, have no idea where they are.” “I’m going out to Long Island.” There are two possibilities. One is that this person is a master of the universe with yachts, homes in various parts of the world and a private jet which—when coming out to the Hamptons flies in what appears to be slow motion for about 20 minutes from LaGuardia over this beautiful green carpet that is, in fact, Long Island. Second possibility is that this is a person from Brooklyn or Queens. Although geographically (continued on page 18)

SHINNECOCK RECOGNITION IS OFFICIAL The Shinnecock Indian Nation became America’s 565th recognized Indian tribe last Friday. The deed was done when the judge of the Board of Indian Appeals, headed by judges Steven K. Linscheid and Debora Luether, declined to consider two frivolous objections to recognition. Later in the day, the Department of the Interior made the final judgment. The Nation, whose history is documented back continuously to before the settlers came in 1639, had applied for recognition in 1978. The Shinnecocks celebrated over the weekend. Tribal Trustee Lance Gumbs said that the day of October 1 will live forever in the minds of the 1,400 tribal members. He also said that the sudden announcement of recognition came as a complete surprise to the Nation. It was feared that the matter of the objections might take as long as two years to be decided upon. In the event, it took three weeks. With this recognition, the Shinnecocks have managed the remarkable feat of keeping together the traditions, tribal ways and family ties that are at the heart of this community, and at the same time join the mainstream of America. Now tribal members will get the same safety net assistance available to everyone else born in the United States—funding for education, health care, child care, seniors program and perhaps most important, access to credit to be able to better themselves financially. Also down the road will be the opportunity for the tribe to own one or more gambling casinos. Needless to say, they have been getting a lot of help with this from the regional business community, even before the final tribal recognition became official. — Dan Rattiner

Railroad Finds a Solution in the Old Sag Harbor Scoot By Dan Rattiner The Long Island Railroad has been fiddling around in recent weeks trying to reconfigure their schedule to better match the needs of their customers. There have been some missteps. Early on in this, they announced that they would cease running the year-round, daily train that goes to Greenport. They’ve got a couple of other trains going out there in the summertime only, but by cancelling this one, they would leave Greenport and the other North Fork stops bereft of train service eight months a year. They backed off from this idea after a big howl went up, but soon thereafter announced that one of the four daily trains that go to the South Fork year-round would be cut in the fall. Here it is the fall. They cut it. But there are three others. The railroad has also been sued about these

cuts. Since the railroad is part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and the MTA considers that when it comes to taxes, the South Fork and North Fork are equal to the rest of Long Island. That there are a gazillion trains every hour as far as the rest of Long Island is concerned and only four or five here doesn’t seem to matter to them, so a local group, spearheaded by the Hampton Luxury Liner Bus Company, filed a suit to stop this tax being imposed on those in the “New York Metropolitan Area” as completely unfair to the East End community. Concurrently, our local state and county officials, also outraged at this new tax, have proposed that the two forks start their own railroad service. The service would consist of little two-car commuter trains chugging from station to station out here. And that service would be separate from the dreaded MTA and immune

from their taxation. The latest news is that the Long Island Rail Road seems to have taken to the idea of the little two-car commuter train idea. And so now they have proposed that they run such a service for the two forks. Before I continue on I would like to note that the one train that finally did get cut is not cut all the way between Montauk and Penn Station. The LIRR seems to have drawn a line in the cinders about halfway out—at the station in Ronkonkoma. The train cut this fall does go out from Manhattan to Ronkonkoma. But it now stops there instead of continuing on. In theory, one could take the old scheduled train from Manhattan to Montauk, get off at the new end of the line at Ronkonkoma, then have a friend drive 50 miles from the Hamptons to pick you up there. MAN BUYS A COMPANY AND IT KILLS HIM By Dan Rattiner Last Sunday, rumors went out that the man who had invented the Segway scooter 10 years ago had driven it off a cliff in California and died. An accident? A suicide? Disobeying the law about not texting while driving? The first reaction to this seemed to be it’s all very sad of course that this man died, but then, he died doing what he loved to do. People always say that they want to do that, either die doing what they love to do or die suddenly of a brain aneurysm so, just like that, all the lights go out. One knows what Hugh Hefner would like to die doing. It is sad for everybody else that he or she left, of course, especially family and friends, and especially if he was a nice guy, but other than that,

there are indeed all kinds of different ways that a person can die, and some of them do seem either preposterous or bizarre or sometimes, just plain funny. This one seemed that way. But then, it turned out, that the media got it all wrong. As the story unfolded it turned out that Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway in 2001, was still alive and well and living in California. It turns out that the man who died, Jimi Heselden, was just the multi-millionaire businessman who bought the company a year ago. He has a big estate about 100 miles north of London, so big that hikers and hunters come on it and he is happy to have them, and he was out Segwaying down a dirt path with the latest model, rounded a bend and didn’t make the turn. He and the Segway fell

80 feet down a cliff into the River Wharfe, and two hikers nearby saw this and ran over but the man was already dead, they reported. Investigations later revealed that, just to make sure there were no tongues wagging, he did die from having driven his Segway off his cliff. At this point, the media, having righted itself from its earlier spasm of getting the wrong man on the wrong continent, then came to the conclusion that James Heselden was close enough to being the inventor of the Segway to be able to allow reporters to proceed to phase two. part of the landmass of Long Island, politically, these two boroughs are part of New York City and so are in no way part of Long Island at all. Therefore, when someone from Brooklyn or Queens goes over the border to Nassau County or anyplace east of that, it is all Long Island. The Hamptons is Long Island, too. “I’m headin’ upstreet.” The first English settlers to come to New York State came to the, er, East End. They crossed over from Connecticut in small sailboats, the leader of them settling in a manor house on what is now Gardiner’s Island. Those of the servant class who worked for him settled on the East End up in Springs and Northwest. When these folks went down by horseback to whatever Hamptons they were going to, they went

“upstreet.” This usually meant East Hampton. But the term could apply to any of the towns. “I’m going out to The Point.” Only a fisherman or a surfer would refer to the Hamptons in this way. The most distinguishing physical feature, as seen from a boat, would be the Montauk Point Lighthouse. Thus that is where they must go. The End. “I’m going out to the Island.” Manhattan-based adventurer. One week it’s Barbados, another the Canaries, another The Isle of Man. They fly out, not in corporate jets, but in bumpy small planes and when they get to the “Island” they hit the ground running. It could mean someplace other than the Hamptons, but if they’re in New York when they say this, it’s the Hamptons. Alternately, another person using

this term might be somebody with a summer place on Shelter Island. But honestly they will use this term only if they are in the company of someone else who summers on Shelter Island. “I’m heading out to the North Fork.” This is somebody who is an anti-Hamptons person. Someone who is not anti-Hampton would not use this phrase because they would not want others to know about the North Fork. The North Fork is the peaceful other fork of eastern Long Island. It’s the Hamptons as it was frozen in time in the 1950s, but without the ocean beaches. Don’t tell anybody. “I’m hittin’ the Hampty Hamps.” Believe it or not, you are in the company of P. Diddy himself or one of his colleagues. The Hampty Hamps, sometimes confused with the Hipty Hoops, is how the name of this place is known in P. Diddy’s world. “I’m headin’ home.” That would be me.

In any case, what the railroad is now proposing is that they offload passengers in Ronkonkoma and then board them on the other side of the platform onto little two-car trains called “Scoots” for the rest of the trip farther east. Ronkonkoma from this perspective, would become a sort of mirror of Jamaica, where you change trains on a platform before continuing on to Manhattan. It does make a certain amount of sense. If you’ve got 20 passengers that want to go east past Ronkonkoma, why haul out a 15-car long train with these few people on it all the way to Montauk? Pretty bad economics that. Unfortunately, the LIRR seems to be just making this proposal as a kind of gesture. They say it will cost several billion dollars which they do not have. They say it could be done by 2020. Don’t hold your breath. Meanwhile, there is a precedent for “Scoots.” And I am absolutely sure that the railroad is using that word “Scoot” because of it. In 1927, the Long Island Railroad began a “Scoot” train between Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor. At the time, Sag Harbor was hoping to see a revival of its fortunes as a manufacturing town and port. Sag Harbor had been a thriving whaling town from the late 18th century to the mid-1800s. But then the whaling industry came to an end. The whales had all been fished out. After that, the town’s fortunes had badly dropped off. But in 1870, the citizens, noticing that the LIRR had come through the area without a stop in Sag Harbor because Sag Harbor was out of the way, petitioned the powers that be in the railroad to build a spur out to Long Wharf. Long Wharf would prosper with such a spur. And so the railroad built it. At first it was a two-car train they dubbed The Toonerville Trolley. But in 1927, they built a one-car self-propelled vehicle for this tenminute journey that they called teh “Scoot.” The little “Scoot” went back and forth

Failed Recall Can I Live Without My Windshield Washer Heater Motor? By Dan Rattiner I got a letter from Buzz Chew Chevrolet in Southampton last Wednesday. It seemed odd to me. I hadn’t been there to service the Tahoe for several months so I didn’t owe them any money. And the envelope had my address on the front written in longhand. When I opened the envelope, a check fell out. It was made out to me for $100. “This check is being sent to you,” a letter accompanying the check read, “because you have been part of a recent recall to fix a problem with your windshield washer heater motor. The result of the recall was the permanent removal of your windshield washer heater motor. We apologize for this inconvenience.” I gave this a lot of thought. Here I was, in a car that no longer had a windshield washer

heater motor. I didn’t know my Tahoe HAD a windshield washer heater motor. So what WAS a windshield washer heater motor? I briefly thought to call Buzz Chew. But then I thought—I ought to be able to figure this out. Apparently, there was a motor, probably an electric motor that heated up the windshield washer fluid that shpritzed onto the windshield when a bird shat on it. Everyone knows that hot water gets things cleaner faster than cold water. So this meant that with it removed, it might take twice as long to get the bird shit off. There would be more strain on the windshield wipers. There would be more strain on the windshield wiper motor—different from the windshield washer heater motor—more strain on my being able to see out my windshield, perhaps even more

strain on the windshield itself. Then I thought—do OTHER cars have heated windshield washer heater motors? Not that I know. This was a perk, apparently explained to me when I bought the car two years ago but which I promptly forgot. So this $100 was NOT to reimburse me for the various strains on the different parts of the car and my eyeballs, this was a $100 to reimburse me for a promised perk they could not successfully provide. My $53,000 car should have actually borne a $52,900 price sticker together with a note saying that this particular Tahoe did not have the usual windshield washer heater motor while others did. I then thought of my car, which I love like a (continued on next page)

MAN VERSUS POND GUNK IN WATER MILL By Dan Rattiner There was an all-day seminar at the 230 Elm Street catering hall in Southampton last Monday with the title “Peconic Estuaries: Call to Action.” The public was welcome. And the discussion was all about the red and brown tide that here and there are occasionally turning our beautiful ponds into algaeinfested goop. This problem has been going on for about 15 years. Scientists have studied it. And they can’t quite figure it out. But they think it has something to do with all the landscaping and farming chemicals that are being constantly thrown into the ponds by runoff after rainstorms. I didn’t go to this, and I didn’t assign any-

body from the paper to attend the seminar. And I don’t mean to be rude, but the reason is that we’ve been having these seminars and speeches for years and it’s always the same. We don’t really know what’s happening. On the other hand, it’s as plain as the nose on your face what is happening. But nobody seems interested in doing anything about it. It means giving up the gorgeous landscaping on your property. It means, if you’re a potato farmer, giving up on the stuff that kills all the potato bugs. Can’t have that. A good example of this problem is Mill Pond, the (sometimes) beautiful pond just north of the Village of Water Mill. I remember it from years ago. It was a pristine, sparkling

blue body of water of about 1,000 acres all surrounded by woods. There were one or two houses on the pond. They were nothing special. People mowed small patches of lawns of those properties so you could get to them from the road. Other than that, they accepted what they got from nature as the landscaping around their place. Occasionally, an owner would go out there and cut down trees every once in awhile on his property to keep the view open and also to make firewood for the fireplaces inside. Ducks and geese lived on the pond. In recent years, all that has changed. Now, wonderful summer homes sit waterfront (continued on page 26)

child, now having endured the slings and arrows of other Tahoes as it drives along with its windshield washer heater motor removed, as one might have to bear the slings and arrows of friends mocking you for having a dentist pull a front tooth. Poor Tahoe. I briefly then thought of the unnecessary opulence of even HAVING a windshield washer heater motor in this day and age of hard times. What an extravagance. And then I recalled how, after you let the car warm up in the wintertime, how easy it was to get the ice off the windshield with the assistance of what I then thought were little heating wires in my windshield but now realize apparently consisted of having a windshield washer heater motor warming up the washer fluid about to be

shpritzed on the ice. I would now be joining the legions of other car owners fumbling to use windshield ice scrapers. The hoi polloi. The great unwashed. This would be a perk that I would miss. And so I then gave thought to the attempts at Chevrolet to solve the problem that eventually led to the removal of the windshield washer heater motor. It needed to be removed; it was my guess, because on rare occasions it might heat up in such a way as to cause the car to burst into flames. Hadn’t there been another windshield washer heater motor of a different design that they had used for other vehicles that DIDN’T get so hot? Hadn’t our engineers and astronauts been able to land on the moon?

Apparently, the problem could not be fixed. Or if it could, it would be at such great expense to swap the windshield washer heater motor out with another that did not have this defect that it might cause General Motors (GM) to go bankrupt. Better just remove it, a Vice President must have said. And send everyone $100. I wonder if the head of GM, who undoubtedly has a vehicle with a windshield washer heater motor, got his $100. As I said earlier, I have been very happy with my Tahoe. However, now, I drive along imagining the place under the hood where the windshield washer heater motor once stood, and I think—are there any birds flying around? I hope we don’t have a cold winter.

The right of way exists from the southwest to the northeast as you head north down the Turnpike. It’s hard to make out, but if you look for it you will see it. If you want, you can also go down it—it’s a dirt and grass track. In the late 1960s, a railroad buff in these parts named Ron Ziel proposed restoring the spur and turning it into a little steam train tourist railroad. He wanted to call it the Sag Harbor and Scuttlehole Railroad, and to that end put a big sign on the front lawn of his Main Street home in Bridgehampton for a while. Ron took me in a Jeep down the right of way, and it is just beautiful along the way. A short way down, it passes a series of magnifi-

cent ponds, which even today are only easily accessed from that right of way. But his efforts came to naught. Of course, today there is barely a trace of even the right of way out at Sag Harbor, though there are pictures of Long Wharf showing the tracks going out to the end of it. Pictures of the old “Scoot” show a railroad car little bigger than a trolley car. The proposed one—for the whole east end and the South Forks—would be much more substantial. But I still wouldn’t want to be in one if it was setting up for a head-on collision with a regular train. Anyway, that will be a problem for those in 2020.

between Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor every day for the next 18 years. It consisted of one double-ended railroad car. We publish a photo of it here. At the Sag Harbor end, it split into several parallel tracks out to the end of Long Wharf. At Bridgehampton, it linked up just to the north of where the station is today. The “Scoot” was never a big success. And when World War II came along, it was abandoned and the rails torn out for the war effort. Today, the railroad bed still remains. It crosses the Sag Harbor Turnpike about 300 yards north of where the tracks on the main line cross that road, and where the gates come down when the train comes through today.

Now What? Public Radio Station Saved, Wally Smith Explains it All By Dr. Wally Smith For a community to be strong and solid, it needs many things: a vibrant economic base, arts and cultural institutions, community-building endeavors that help overcome social barriers and connect people of different interests. It also needs media, education, arts and cultural organizations that provide access to information, news, analysis, commentary, artistic expression, lively discussion, and the free exchange of ideas. This is the vital role of public radio: to provide a forum that enables all members of the community to connect. Wally Smith is the General Manager of Peconic Public Broadcasting, 88.3 FM.

We believe there’s far more diversity in our community than outsiders might think. The East End is emerging as an “urban-rural” community that hosts its own multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, economically mixed community. This reality informs the direction of local public radio. For that reason, our goal is to make 88.3 FM an outlet that gives voice to the special issues, needs and interests of our listeners across the East End of Long Island and the southern coast of Connecticut. In 1993, the University was given permission by the FCC to relocate its frequency from 91.3 FM to 88.3 FM, increase the power to 25,000 watts, and became a member station of National Public Radio. Since that time, 88.3 FM has built

a portfolio of locally and nationally produced programming—now available on-air, on-line, and in HD—that represents a compelling mix of jazz, news, arts and informational programming. Now that we have successfully saved our station, with the help of the incredibly supportive East End community, we have become even clearer about what we need to do as a locally owned and operated public radio station. Listeners can expect 88.3 FM programming to become even more community centric. The basic format of the station will remain an eclectic mix of music, news and entertainment. There won’t be any major changes to the program schedule other than the inclusion of more local content in (continued on page 44)

PRODUCER AND DIRECTOR HAVE A MEETING By Dan Rattiner Now here is an experience that few people get to enjoy. It is a Monday evening and I am down at Sho Win Japanese Restaurant in Pantigo for a strategy meeting over beer with Dennis Lynch about our new film. Lynch is the filmmaker who has made the full-length documentary King of the Hamptons, which will be shown at the Hamptons International Film Festival this weekend. I partnered with him to make it. There are about 110 films in the festival. King (as we call it) made the cut and had been scheduled to be shown Monday October 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the UA Theatre in East Hampton. But when the gates opened for people to buy tickets for the movies in the festival, two films sold out right away. One of them was King. Because of that, at a strategy meeting earlier,

we had scrambled to figure out how to get ourselves in to see our own film. Now we were talking about the fact that a second showing, put in after the first sold out, had now also sold out. (It starts the festival. It is Thursday, October 7 at 2 p.m. in East Hampton.) So now what? I say this is an extraordinary experience for me because though Dennis created and directed the film in 2008 and since then has put in a gazillion hours editing it during 2009 and 2010, it has fallen to me, by default, to basically be the producer of it. Thus the partnership. I’ve gotten him the connections, I’ve arranged for him to film celebrities and have meetings with the rich and famous, and I have guided him—a complete stranger—through the whole summer scene out here in the Hamptons, he and his camera, taking him to film at secret ponds deep in a woods, aboard the largest yacht

in Sag Harbor and so forth and so on. “I’ll not interfere with your creative process,” I told him, “I’m proud to be part of this film. Think of yourself as Jerry Seinfeld. You’re Mr. Creative. And I’m the network heavy. I have veto power if you step over some invisible Hamptons line.” What the hell do I know about filmmaking? Nothing. What the hell did he know about the Hamptons? Nothing. “Okay,” he said. And thus a bargain was made. He’s made an amazing movie. “So I’m thinking why don’t we have some private showings over the weekend for theatre owners and distributors,” I said. “How do we do that?” “We get a venue. Then we stand by the festi(continued on page 40)

INVENTIONS and indeed the reports of such occurrances, dug up by eager reporters Googling away on hundreds of websites, magazines, newspapers and television networks is pretty startling and, in some cases funny and some cases tragic, just like the death of this poor man, God rest his soul. One of those Killed by his Own Invention was a man named Franz Reichelt who’s actual death while demonstrating his invention back in 1912 was filmed and is now on Youtube. Reichert invented an article of clothing that looked something like a very billowy cape and hood. If you needed to jump out of a burning building you could do so and this clothing would billow out and float you safely to the ground. He decided to demonstrate it to an eager public by equipping a store mannequin with such a garment, taking it up to the first deck of the Eiffel Tower and then pushing it off so it would float to the ground. He was, apparently, a kind of short-tempered fellow and while they were getting the dummy ready he decided the hell with it, he’d do it himself. I’ve seen the video. He steadies himself on an iron cross brace 100 feet up, raises his arms like a bird making the arms of his garment billow out, looks straight at the camera with a sort of fierce smile for a brief moment, and then swan dives off into space. That lasted about a second. After that, he came straight down, hit the ground and died instantly. He was 32. Here are some others. Jack Daniels, the inventor of Jack Daniels,

made a lot of money, put it in a safe, got drunk, forgot the combination, kicked the safe, got an infected toe and died. This was in 1911 and it was before Penicillin. In 1944, an American named Thomas Midgley Jr. invented an elaborate series of pullies that could be mounted over a bed to be operated by a disabled person to get himself out of bed. He was quite the inventor. This was his 100th patent. But this one killed him. Trying it out for the first time, he got entangled in it and it strangled him. The Fourth Earl of Morton, James Douglas, introduced “the maiden,” the guillotine, to Scotland. Oh, this is so sad. I think you know what’s coming. Let’s just say that that was the year James Douglas was implicated in the murder of Mary Queen of Scots’ second husband and they caught him at it. Here’s another you can figure out. Otto Lilienthal invented the glider. It worked fine. But one day, gliding his latest model off a tall hill in Berlin, he lost his grip and fell 50 feet to the ground and died. William Bullock invented the web rotary printing press. Where earlier presses could print up to 1,100 impressions an hour, this rotary, when speeded up to its top speed, could make up to 10,000 impressions an hour. This was a great improvement, but early on they did tend to break down. Bullock was trying to fix one in 1867, and had just pushed a belt onto a pulley with his foot when, uh, it started up. In the Soviet Union in 1921, hopes were high. Lenin had led the revolution that dethroned the

Czar just four years before. Communism was the wave of the future. That year an inventor named Valerian Abakovsky developed something he called an “aerowagon.” This was a regular railroad train with a locomotive at the front and, above the roof, a large airplane engine and propeller to make it go even faster. Abakovsky boarded it with a bunch of Communist officials to take them on a trip from Moscow to Tula. It worked fine. But coming back, it did not. It derailed coming around a turn, caught fire and killed everybody on board. Here’s a bad one. In ancient China, Prime Minister Li Si was a chief assistant to the First Emperor of China Qin Shi Huang. He was also an excellent calligrapher and so, probably to the amazement of the Emperor and others, wrote down many of the state policies. One he wrote was something he thought up himself. It involved a way to painfully kill a person sentenced to death.
