Being Santa Claus

/ by dan rattiner

W

hen reporter Clark Kent gets the call, he dashes into a phone booth, changes out of his street clothes and into his Superman clothes in one tenth of a split second, and is off into the sky, his fist and right arm out in front of him—the Man of Steel looking down with his x-ray vision for the trouble he knows is there, and then, suddenly he turns left and heads down back to the earth, the globe coming and getting bigger and bigger like it does in Google Earth, until he is right there, at the bad spot, where he takes care of the brewing trouble before it gets out of hand. As for me, during every humdrum day, I am the mild-mannered Dan Rattiner, chief reporter for Dan’s Papers. But then when I get the call, which comes from Marina Van at the East Hampton Chamber of Commerce at around 9 a.m. on the first Saturday morning in December, I quick run upstairs to our bedroom, take off all my clothes and, in a matter 18 | november 29, 2013

of one full hour, suit myself up to become…Santa Claus!! There I am in the mirror. The trouble I have to deal with is at 11 a.m. We need Santa Claus, Marina tells me. Get down to the East Hampton Presbyterian Church on Main Street and climb up into the sleigh behind the reindeer. It is the annual East Hampton Santa Comes to Town Parade, and you are needed to sit up there, just like you did last year and the year before, and wave at the giggling girls and smiling boys as the steeds clipclop you through town. Afterwards—we’ll tell you the place, one year it was in the lobby of the UA Theater, another year it was in the Huntting Inn living room— we need you to come in, sit down in the easy chair and ask the little boys and girls who are standing in that long line with their parents to, one at a time, just come forward and sit upon your knee, so you can smile at them and look them in the eye and say ho ho ho and ask them what they want for Christmas. If you can’t do it, the kids will be heartbroken.

Come on Santa, we need you!!! Well, it’s my calling. I come. And I have to say that for that time, that wonderful time, I am Santa Claus, this whole other person, this East Hampton’s Santa Claus. Sometimes, when I think about this—for example, when I am at our family Thanksgiving dinner, in New York City or in East Hampton or out with the other side of the family in Pennsylvania—am I really Santa Claus in December? Have I really turned into him? I put a forkful of cranberry stuffing in my mouth. Yes, I say to myself, Dan is here now. But then there is this other person. A nicer person, who shows up in December. I don’t know about Clark and Superman, but the way I figure it, I am TWO people. I live in this humdrum newspaper body with the pad and pencil in my breast pocket and my camera around my neck for 11 months a year. And then, suddenly, I am this entirely different person, a fatter person, a person who needs help getting down a flight of stairs, or looking out through a white wig that’s slipped down hamptons holiday preview

over his eyes while trying to drive a Chevy Tahoe to the church, giving up and having his wife do it. When I’m my Dan’s Papers person, I am meek and mild, wry and retiring. People come over to me at parties and I look down at my shoes. Aw shucks, I say. When I make the transformation in our bedroom on that appointed morning, I am turned into HIM. I’m a man who has just heard a good joke. And now I have a good joke to tell. I am straight forward. You ask for a present? I tell you you’ll get it, just be patient. I am loveable. I hug little children. I shake mittened hands with grown-ups. I stand up straight. I say ho, ho, ho. I slap mayors on the back. If pulled over on North Main Street on my way to the church, I tell the officer to just give me a warning. I am on my way to the Presbyterian Church for Truth, Justice and the American Way. I’m a folk hero. Does Superman know the first names of everybody in town? He knows a few people, certainly the troublemakers. Can Superman remember everyDanspapers.com

thing? He cannot. He can get baffled. When Superman’s little fracas is over, does he stand around and accept the congratulations from everybody? He does not. He flies away. He is, in fact, one and the same as Clark Kent. And they don’t want anybody to know. It’s a worrisome business. What if someday they are found out? Santa is just so at ease. He calls everybody in town by their first name. He writes down what everybody wants. And then he doesn’t need the list. After it’s over, he flies up to the North Pole in his sleigh, and, from memory, without needing the list, he tells the elves what to make and whose name to put on the gift cards. And then he goes to his office and uses his big red telephone to tell all the middle management people to get cracking, helping out the elves. And then when night falls, he and the missus retreat to their cottage, brush the snow off the door, and go inside to get some shuteye in their feather bed. Back at one of those many Thanksgiving dinners,

as I slice myself a second helping of turkey and cranberry sauce, I begin to feel a little sorry for Clark Kent. As Clark, the bumbling awkward reporter, it must be so hard to keep his secret. And when he’s the other guy, even doing all the heavy lifting and all, he may be better at keeping that secret. But maybe not. Who likes to lie? He just wants out. I, on the other hand, am proud to be that other person. Then, when the holiday is over, who returns is Dan Rattiner. “Hey Dan, haven’t seen you around.” “Yeah, well, this year I’m Santa Claus again, so there’s no Dan.” “Go on.” *** Not just everybody can transform into Santa Claus. You have to be fat, jolly, older, at ease with yourself and all you have achieved, able to handle celebrity with aplomb, able to give presents to small children with a single bound…no, that’s not right… november 29, 2013 | 19

It's the most Wonderful Time of the Year

Enjoying east end traditions

W

ith the holiday season upon us, the East End will be awash in a blend of magic, wonder and cheer. Our villages and hamlets put on their holiday best, showing off before settling into their winter slumbers. Unique celebrations abound, providing ample opportunity for residents and visitors to create fantastical memories and yearly traditions. Some holiday traditions endure in the Hamptons, while others fall away with the passage of time and the shifting cultural and economic landscape. Who remembers all the years when East Hampton stood out among the local hamlets and villages at Christmastime, as every tree along Main Street was wrapped in blue lights? They were charming and distinctive—they cast the village in a different light than those with white or multicolored bulbs. Today, Town Pond holds the last lonely bastion of that bygone time—one little tree holding its blue vigil for days past in the center. Perhaps as a tribute, each year on Three Mile Harbor Road one group of homeowners re–creates the rows of blue-lit trees along their street. Hopefully that tradition will continue, and new ones are born each year. For example, Small Business Saturday, Danspapers.com

started in 2010 and held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, has taken off on the East End. Black Friday increasingly encroaches on Thanksgiving celebrations, with some big box stores opening as early as 6 a.m. on Thursday. (Although some businesses, like P.C. Richards, have taken public stands against opening on Thanksgiving Day.) Small Business Saturday was started by American Express, encouraging shoppers to support local businesses. This year, a number of seasonal festivities fall on November 30 as well, giving holiday shoppers another reason to head downtown to take part in celebratory, community-minded events. East Hampton’s Menorahcade on November 30 commemorates the village’s third annual public menorah lighting. A parade of cars topped with giant menorahs will drive from Chabad Lubavitch of the Hamptons, at 13 Woods Lane, to the menorah lighting in Herrick Park. Southampton has its own Parade of Lights each year, also falling on November 30 this season. A long line of decorated fire trucks begins at Windmill Lane and drives around the Village to Agawam Park for the annual Christmas tree lighting. A holiday party with Santa follows at the Southampton Cultural Center, where light refreshments are served. Downtown Southampton is transformed into a veritable winter wonderland as the season progresses,

with a parade of small trees decorating Main Street and Jobs Lane. Southampton Country Holiday presents its annual “It’s a Wonderful Village” celebration from December 6–8. Enjoy a host of events throughout the village, including a three-day Christmas Marketplace at the Southampton Center. Peruse artisan crafts and a farmers market, and enjoy storytelling and holiday delights. On December 7, children young and old can enjoy horse and buggy rides that leave from the Chamber office and run down Main Street and Jobs Lane. Just up Hill Street, the annual windmill lighting at Stony Brook Southampton will occur on December 6. Then, Saint Nick returns to the Village for his annual visit to Rogers Memorial Library on December 14 from 2–4 p.m. Also on November 30 is the annual lighting of the Montauk Lighthouse. The holiday celebration will include caroling and a visit from Santa. Clearly, St. Nick enjoys the holiday traditions on our narrow stretch of island. Parking and admission to the lighthouse grounds are free for the event. The celebrations continue the next day with Christmas at the Lighthouse. East Enders are invited free of charge to enjoy pony rides, hot cider, snacks and a “Ho! Ho! Ho!” from Santa. The Lighthouse gift shop will also be open for holiday shopping. A rain date for the lighting is scheduled for December 7; and a rain date for november 29, 2013 | 21

Christmas at the Lighthouse is December 8. The lights will grace New York’s oldest lighthouse every night until New Year’s Day. Montauk Point on January 1 sees another tradition—the annual pilgrimage of Koreans and Korean-Americans to watch the first sunrise of the New Year. Korean culture calls for the first sunrise to be seen from the easternmost accessible point of land, and Koreans from Long Island and the New York metro area traditionally make the pre-dawn trip to Montauk Point to greet the sun and anticipate all that the New Year holds, as the lighthouse becomes awash in golden sunlight. Santa returns to Montauk on December 8, when he visits the Montauk Firehouse. The visit is held in

22 | november 29, 2013

conjunction with Montauk’s Star Bright Lighting weekend, where businesses vie for the title of Best Decorated Montauk Business. By this point, Sweet’tauk’s second annual Handmade for the Holidays fair is well underway. Held every Saturday and Sunday until Christmas Eve at Sweet’tauk Lemonade, 34 South Etna Avenue, the fair features a variety of goods handmade by local artists. On the North Fork, Greenport Village will host a tree lighting in Mitchell Park on November 29 at 5:30 p.m. Then, the Greenport Fire Department Christmas Parade will be on December 8 at 1 p.m. Christmas characters including Rudolph and Santa will make an appearance. The next weekend, Greenport will play host to another new

tradition—Shellabration. This second annual event invites East Enders to keep it local by sampling and celebrating the freshly harvested Peconic Bay shellfish, deliciously paired with North Fork wine. Also on December 7, Westhampton holds its annual Holiday WinterFest, where participants can ride the Westhampton Beach Holiday Trolley to events around the Village. Among the many activities and attractions, local stores host kids’ craft stations and holiday treat stations, carolers wander the streets and Santa and Mrs. Claus entertain with stories and fun. Later that evening, Jews and Christians celebrate the holidays together at the annual Christmas tree and menorah lighting ceremony on the Village Green. Caroling by the Westhampton

hamptons holiday preview

Beach High School chorus and the Hampton Synagogue’s Youth Choir will fill the evening with the festive sounds of the season. Enjoy free hot cocoa and cookies. To top off the evening, Santa Claus arrives by fire truck. East Hampton has its Santa Parade on December 7 this year, and Santa will greet children after the parade at the Huntting Inn on Main Street at around 11 a.m. The 24th Annual Holiday Tour of Inns, B&Bs and Special Places follows on December 14. Included on the tour is the famed Pollock-Krasner House in Springs. Local properties, dolled up for the holidays, will be open from noon until 4 p.m. Sag Harbor also holds its annual windmill

lighting on Long Wharf on December 7. Santa will visit the windmill the next day. New this year, Sag Harbor is promoting “The 12 Days of Christmas” from December 1–12, where shops feature various specials. The annual Holiday Lighting of the Big Duck is held the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving each year, coincidently the same day the of the nationally televised Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting. Not that we’re biased or anything, but attending a duck lighting in person is a bit more quack-tastic and oh-so-Long Island. A tradition three years in the making, the annual holiday window decorating contest in Riverhead has been cancelled this year due to an

influx of tenants downtown. An unexpected casualty in the efforts to revive the central business district, the annual event invited community members to decorate vacant windows to light up Main Street for the holiday season. But now, windows used in the past are filled or in the process of being filled by new stores, who are putting their own spin on holiday decorating. It would be impossible to attend all of the holiday events and attractions on the East End, so find some favorites and enjoy them year after year. It’s how family traditions are born. For more details and additional events, see the calendar on page 41 or visit Events.DansPapers.com.

The Nutcracker, Sweet!

t wouldn’t be the holidays without a performance of The Nutcracker, and the East End has an abundance of shows to grace your winter calendar. Character names and select details change with the different productions, but the basic plotline tells the same, beloved tale. With a score by famed Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker is the story of young heroine Clara, who receives a nutcracker from her godfather, Drosselmeyer, on Christmas Eve. Much to Clara’s dismay, her brother Fritz breaks the toy before the two go to bed. Later in the night, a heartbroken Clara sneaks back into the living room to check on her toy. As the clock strikes midnight, Clara looks up to see Drosselmeyer sitting above the clock. The living room is transformed into a battleground, as it fills with mice. The nutcracker grows to life-size, leading an army of gingerbread soldiers against the Mouse King and his army. With the nutcracker still wounded, Clara throws her slipper at the Mouse King, giving the nutcracker enough time to stab him. The battle won, the nutcracker transforms into a prince and leads Clara through a snowflake-filled pine forest into the Land of Sweets, which is ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy. Various candies, representing countries from across the globe, dance for Clara and the Nutcracker Prince in thanks. As the ballet

ends, audience members are left to question whether Clara’s experience was a dream or reality. Megan Callahan, owner of Danse Arts in Bridgehampton, describes the experience of teaching her dancers the importance of The Nutcracker. The program lives on despite the societal gap between a show that debuted in 1892 and today. “I want the kids to experience The Nutcracker” as dancers from past generations have experienced. The 11-year-olds who play Clara, for example, are not as excited to receive a nutcracker as Clara would have been at the show’s debut. “I tell them to pretend it’s an iPad,” she says. “Then, they’re excited.” Then, they understand. Her ballet incorporates dancers 3 years old to seniors in high school, with parents playing the parts of adult dancers in the party scene. “It’s a very family-oriented show,” says Callahan.

ith weather that begs for days indoors by the fire, and with copious quantities of holiday treats at your disposal, it’s easy to lose motivation to get outside and stay active in the wintertime. But if your New Year’s resolution has something to do with living a healthier lifestyle, or if you’re the anytime-is-outdoors-time kind of person, then winter on the East End is your wonderland. This is the perfect time to take advantage of the snowy conditions and the underappreciated skiing opportunities on the East End. Yes, skiing. Montauk has a high density of state parks, providing ample opportunity to cross-country ski. Camp Hero State Park, Shadmoor State Park, Montauk State Park and Hither Hills State Park all offer cross-country skiing. If the Farmer’s Almanac is wrong and we don't have a snowy winter, 30 | november 29, 2013

head to the state parks for hiking adventures. Or, join the Southampton Trails Preservation Society (southamptontrails.org) and East Hampton Trails Preservation Society (ehtps.org) on their weekly hikes. Few activities say winter like skaters of all ages gliding around a frozen pond or outdoor rink, and the East End is the ideal place to hone those skating skills. Check out Old Town Pond in Southampton, Town Pond in East Hampton or, for a smoother glide, Buckskill Winter Club in Wainscott (buckskillwinterclub.com), the ice rink in Greenport’s Mitchell Park (greenportvillage.com) and, new this year, the rink at Southampton Golf Club on County Road 39. More of a bundle-up-and-sip-hotchocolate kind of person? Head to a frozen Mecox Bay in Water Mill to take in ice-boating races. Perhaps unfrozen water is more your thing? On the East End it’s long been known that winter provides the best surf, but beware that the conditions often

call for expert surfers. If you’re daring enough, grab a cold-water wetsuit, hood, gloves and booties from any of the area surf shops and hit the beach. Standup paddleboarding is also a viable option if you dress for it. Be sure to take the appropriate safety measures, like wearing a life vest, bringing a whistle and light, and using a leash. If you’re interested in an equally intense winter activity, consider taking the plunge. Shock yourself out of your Thanksgiving food coma at the Shelter Island Turkey Plunge. Sponsored by the Friends of the Shelter Island Public Library, the event takes place on Saturday, November 30 at Crescent Beach at 10 a.m. Two weeks later, Human Resources of the Hamptons will host its 10th Annual Polar Beach Plunge on Saturday, December 14 at 10 a.m. at Coopers Beach. possible, it’s a proven way to get over the “winter blues” that come with the shorter days. The key is to dress appropriately and to take the proper precautions before heading out. Dress in layers, and wear breathable fabrics. The danger with wearing heavy items is that sweat can dry and act as a cooling agent, but dressing in layers allows you to add and remove clothes as necessary. A waterproof and windproof outer shell is best, especially for running by the breezy East End beaches and taking part in these holiday season races: • 11/28, Montauk Turkey Day 3 miler and 6 miler: Both races start at 10 a.m. Day-of registration at the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, 8–9:30 a.m. • 11/28, Mattituck-Cutchogue Teachers' Association Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot: 9 a.m., 5K run/walk. As the holidays are prime time to give back, a new app makes it possible to log miles while donating to your favorite charity. Charity Miles is a free phone app that allows you to earn corporate sponsorships for various charities whenever you walk, run or bike. As you get moving, the app tracks your distance and sponsors donate money to your selected charity. Runners and walkers earn 25 cents for every mile completed; bikers earn 10 cents. As of right now, it’s only possible to use the app outside, where a GPS can track your mileage, but the app is schedule to soon work indoors with treadmills and stationary bikes. You can choose to donate to the ASPCA, Autism Speaks, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Stand Up to Cancer, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or Wounded Warrior Project, among others. Remember: After December 21, the days start getting longer. And if you’re willing to go a little up-island, Port Jefferson’s Dickens Festival is December 6, 7 and 8, with the whole community transformed into a beautiful Victorian village. Also that weekend is Westhampton Beach Village’s Holiday WinterFest.

6 Indulge in hot chocolate

Hot chocolate is liquid gold on frosty winter afternoons. There are plenty of places to get great hot chocolate on the East End, including Hamptons Coffee Company in Southampton, Water Mill and Westhampton Beach, Starbucks in Bridgehampton, Sagtown Coffee in Sag Harbor, The Golden Pear Café in Southampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor and Bridgehampton; and more. For other sweet treats, head to the Fudge Company in Southampton for great chocolates and candies.

7 Library EXPLORATION

What better place to take your child (and get out of the cold!) than a library? All of the public libraries on the East End have great events and activities planned throughout the winter. On November 30, head to Westhampton Library with your child to make a holiday craft. Kids can make an orange pomander on December 7 at East Hampton Library. For more information on library events, go to the calendar on page 31.

8 Gingerbread CREATIONS Make a gingerbread man or house with your child! The Children’s Museum of the East End has a Gingerbread House Decorating Workshop on December 14—but if you can’t make it, you can head to Gingerbread University (3225 Sound Avenue, Riverhead) and have your child make an edible masterpiece. Reservations for Gingerbread University are strongly advised.

Fairy Tale High Is Here!

ily m FaF u n

F

airy Tale High, a new line of dolls that reimagines classic fairy tale princesses as high school students, is likely to be a hot new item this holiday season—and consumers on the East End were started the trend. The toys, which were launched by Sag Harbor residents Scott Coff and Ken Price’s toy company S-K Victory, had a successful trial run in Sag Harbor prior to their wide release. “Back in the 1890s, my grandfather started a toy company, and my father eventually started a different toy business, where he met my mom. I worked for Jakks Pacific for about 13 years before saying ‘it’s time to move on,’” says Price. Price and Coff went to Las Vegas for a licensing show in 2012, where they partnered with United Trademarks Holdings to develop dolls based on classic fairy tales. After making sure the dolls weren’t too similar to Disney’s—“Walt Disney was born in 1902; these fairy tales were written by the Brothers Grimm!" Price laughs—they immediately began developing the idea. Eight dolls were initially released, each with their own backstory and personality. And Coff and Price made sure that the dolls were appropriate

and sent a positive message to young girls. “We’re current and trendy. The dolls are cool, but they’re also [recognizable],” Coff says. “We are known by the consumer at three levels: the kids, the moms and the grandmothers. They understand the product and who the characters are. We didn’t want to go in the direction of the Monster High [dolls].” The dolls were given a limited release in the Hamptons prior to their rollout at national chains like Target and Wal-Mart. “We went to Kites of the Harbor, then put some in Bridgehampton. A week later, they’d sold out!” Price exclaims. “At the end of July we started a Facebook page, and within two months we had 17,000 fans.” Price and Coff are eager to see the reception the dolls have in wide release. Price believes that one of the more compelling aspects of the line is that the characters all exist in the same world. “The way Disney does it now, they’re never in the same story— which is the opposite of us,” he explains, noting that all the princesses go to the same fictional performing arts high school and are friends, likening the premise to the shared universes of such characters as Superman and Batman. In addition to the dolls, there are free eBook stories for each doll

The Man Who Made Frosty

F

rosty the Snowman is a jolly, happy soul, and so is the man who created him. Riverhead's Don Duga has had a remarkably successful career. The goodnatured artist is best known for his work on the seminal holiday classic Frosty the Snowman. “Frosty the Snowman kind of opened a lot of doors for me,” Duga says. “When you work on something, you kind of just do it and move on, but people liked it!” Duga, originally from Hollywood, attended to the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1958, where he wanted to study painting. “I was never going to be in animation,” Duga laughs. “I was going to be a painter! But my drawing teacher said that you actually get paid if you do animation.” The Chouinard Art Institute had many famous animators on its faculty, including Shamus Culhane, the lead animator of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. After graduating from Choinard, Duga storyboarded countless cartoons and projects, but Duga’s big break was at Rankin/Bass Productions. “I came to New York from California and lived in the Village,” he notes. “I met with Arthur [Rankin, Jr.] and Jules Bass; they had a little studio in the city, with a garden, and they called me in and gave me my first project, which was Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The 1964 holiday special, which was animated with puppets, was far along in production

and Duga didn’t get credited for the project. Rankin/Bass Productions’ holiday specials—including The Little Drummer Boy, Mad Monster Party, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and more—helped the studio gain exposure, not only thanks to the animation, but the vocal talents as well. “Arthur was great at getting people [to perform]. He had a lot of great actors,” Duga says. Frosty the Snowman starred Jackie Vernon and Jimmy Durante. Duga has lived in Riverhead since 1980. “When I lived in the Village, friends of mine were staying out here on the North Fork,” he recalls. “I went with them and fell in love with it.” Duga has a great fondness for Riverhead and is glad it’s experiencing a renaissance; he drew the September 2012 cover for Dan’s Papers featuring a whimsical version of the village. Still a very active artist, Duga continues to work on special projects and shows. In July, he did an art show called “Surviving Sandy,” featuring art inspired by the resilience of those affected by Superstorm Sandy, in the 73 Main Boutique and Gallery. Most recently, Duga was a featured artist at 73 Main’s “Grey Gardens” exhibit, where he presented several paintings of the legendary

mansion. The artist is currently preparing for his holiday show, which will open in December. “I make up these cards with Frosty the Snowman in a parade [with the other characters] with a blank space, and when kids come in I draw them into the space,” he says with a smile. “There’s a lot of fun and festivity.” A staple of the East End art community, Duga’s work is a timeless treat that people of all ages can enjoy.

WoMen’s

Forget your weekly soccer games, car pools and homework. instead, imagine living in three countries with three different cultures and three different languages all before age 13. now you’re ready to step inside the pages of Life with an accent to join Frank levy on his gripping journey from berlin in the 1930’s to the middle east, then to America in 1946. Wherever he goes he is marked by his accent. When Frank adjusts, fate intervenes. he must reinvent himself again as an adult. by dipping into the soul of one man determined to make it in America, author marilyn Gottlieb reminds readers polarized by immigration problems that our nation has been built upon the success of many refugees.

Ornaments are particularly good choices to make with children (in the kitchen, not in the batter). Her Christmas Pudding happens to be her favorite holiday recipe, and it involves a lot of easy measuring of ingredients—kids love to help with that. Her Gingerbread Bars with cream cheese frosting are a favorite for all ages. She stresses that her Christmas Ornaments are not edible—but a real crowd pleaser. You can meet Johnson at a local library this holiday season. She’ll be giving talks in Center Moriches on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.; in Hampton Bays on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m., and in Quogue on Dec. 12 at 5 p.m.

re holiday cheer and wine synonymous? Or just in the Hamptons? This year, Wölffer Estate Vineyard will celebrate the holidays with a host of events on December 7, featuring a holiday gift bazaar during the day and a gala cocktail party—with a countdown to the Lighting of the Vines—

that evening. The annual Lighting of the Vines has become a signature event for Wölffer, and they’re adding another holiday tradition to that day's festivities.

Wölffer’s inaugural Festival of Trees will feature Christmas trees decorated by local businesses and designers, to be auctioned off for charity during the evening’s gala cocktail party. Over 15,000 LED lights will delight wine drinkers when the switch is flipped, Rockefeller Center–style, on Saturday evening. Prior to the cocktail party, Wölffer will be hosting an outdoor Holiday Gift Bazaar from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. featuring local vendors and artisans. Enjoy sipping on Wölffer wine while you peruse the offerings. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales, the trees and the holiday

Winter at Wölffer gift bazaar will be donated to Fighting Chance, a cancer counseling center in Sag Harbor, and Maureen’s Haven homeless shelter. Tickets for the gala are $90 for adults and $45 for youth under 21 years old. There’s no charge to attend the holiday gift market. The lights will stay on the vines through the end of January, serving as the perfect holiday backdrop for Wölffer’s Candlelight Fridays. As the weather cools, the Sagaponack winery gets festive with the music series. Held weekly into the spring, Candlelight Fridays combat the chill and inevitable tedium of the off-season with live music from 5–8 p.m.,

wines by the glass and bottle, and cheese and charcuterie plates for purchase. With no cover charge, it’s a popular, relaxing way to kick off the weekend. Mellow bands play inside the winery tasting room, and outdoor heating lamps allow East Enders to comfortably enjoy the crisp air—enhanced by a glass of warm, mulled wine or a rich red—on the back terrace. Wine Down This Holiday Season with Local Varietals

bottle of wine is perhaps the most classic offering for a guest to bestow upon their beloved host or hostess. And East Enders who want to share their wealth of local wine when traveling this holiday season will have a profusion of options to choose from. So, which bottle will it be? Dan’s Papers picked the brains of local winemakers to find out which of their wines they think would pair best with holiday meals. For those who want to represent a specific winery, New York wine writer Don Schuman says it would be wise to go for a pinot noir or full-bodied chardonnay. “It’s subtle and goes great with fish as well [as turkey] and goes with all fowl,” Schuman says of his red wine selection, adding, on his suggestion for whites, full-bodied chardonnays “are big enough to stand up to fowl, as well as fish.” If you’re talking turkey, winemaker Rich Olsen-Harbich of Bedell Cellars says, “rich, full-flavored whites match nicely with the savory and sweet combos of a turkey dinner…as do lighter bodied reds like franc or pinot.” He suggests his fans go with Bedell’s gewürztraminer or cabernet franc. “They seem to be able to work well with all the traditional flavor combinations,” says OlsenHarbich. “A barrel-fermented chard works well also.” Roman Roth of the South Fork’s Wölffer Estate Vineyards

also suggests a cabernet franc for those looking to drink Long Island wine this holiday season. He says those who want to represent Team Roth should consider purchasing a bottle of Wölffer’s cabernet franc known as Caya. “Caya and Satalis Fatum, a red blend, are the two reds I highly recommend for the holidays,” Roth says, adding that, if possible, one should snag a bottle from the 2010 vintage. “[It] was just fantastic, and my two suggestions are among the amazing reds that have really surprised people as they have a quality level that stands up to the best wine in the world. “ No matter which particular holiday party you’re attending, Roth says Wolffer’s Amarone-style cabernet sauvignon, Caletto, is a bottle that will help drive home the point that “Long Island is something special and can be featured and savored during the holidays.” Made from dried grapes, the Caletto is a concentrated wine that Roth calls “just amazing” in its decadence and said it should be served at the end of a heavy, long holiday meal. “Everything else is heavy, so the wine paired with the actual dinner should be lighter to balance the meal,” he says. “After everything has been eaten you serve the Caletto to drive the point home that it’s a special dinner.” If you like the idea of using a bottle of wine to signal the end of an epic holiday meal, Roth feels that another choice can be found in their line of dessert wines.

“Our ice wine, Diosa, is a beautiful dessert wine that comes in a small bottle but is enough for 20 people,” he says. “It’s a wonderful accent to serve as the crown on top of a two– or three– hour dinner.” Want to stick to reds? Winemaker Kareem Massoud of Aquebogue’s Paumanok Vineyards, recently nominated for this year’s “Best American Winery” by Wine Enthusiast magazine, suggests snagging a bottle of Paumanok’s 30th anniversary wine, which retails for $100. “It was described in The Wall Street Journal as bearing ‘comparison with Napa reds costing two to three times as much,’” says Massoud, adding that those who prefer to go white this season should find a perfect buy in the justreleased 2009 Blanc de Blanc or the 2013 Chenin Blanc. If you’re a history lover, you may consider buying a bottle of Dos Aguas from Macari Vineyards in Mattituck. The bottle’s label makes it the "signature" wine of owner Joe Macari, who seeks to honor the area’s very first farmers—the East End’s Native Americans—with this red blend. Another wine suggestion from the Mattituck winery comes from Macari’s winemaker, Kelly Urbanik. “The 2010 Bergen Road just came out and it’s really delicious,” says Urbanik of another of Macari’s celebrated red blends, adding her suggestion for whites can be found in the 2013 early wine, which is currently being bottled.

Local Craft Brews Designed for Cold Winter Nights

A

s East End breweries head into the holidays, they are preparing beer in keeping with the season. Unlike lighter summer brews, these seasonals are dark and warming. For bringing to a party or enjoying a night at home sitting by the fireplace, local taprooms will fill up your growler with their microbrewed craft beer. “During the winter, we make a beer called Antifreeze English Old Ale,” Greenport Harbor Brewing Company co-founder John Liegey says. “It runs a little high in alcohol—it’s about 7%. It’s brewed to get you through those cold winter nights.” “It’s a dark, malty beer with a hard candy flavor,” he adds. Greenport has a second winter brew for 2013-2014, Hammer & Sickle, a Russian imperial stout. “It's one of our limited beers,” Liegey says. “We only do one batch of it. It’s 10%, so it’s a really strong alcohol beer.” Hammer & Sickle has a lot of body and depth, with a chocolate and coffee flavor to it, according to Liegey. “Every year for the holidays, we brew a French Country Christmas Ale,” Southampton Publick House brewmaster Evan Addario reports. Christmas Ale is a take on the classic Biere de Garde style, with a complex

spicy malt flavor accented by a mild herbal character of French Strisselspalt hops, Addario says, adding that the 7.2% alcohol content has a warming effect in the finish. The Publick House’s staple winter seasonal is Southampton Imperial Porter. Addario calls it rich and flavorful with notes of chocolate, toffee and caramel and said it is an ideal beer for pairing with rich seasonal foods—or just a reprieve from a cold day. Crooked Ladder Brewery is also coming out with a Christmas Ale, as well as an experimental ale dubbed Santa Spice. Duffy Griffiths, Crooked Ladder’s brewing partner, says that the Christmas Ale will be “a hoppy amber ale, along the lines of a double IPA.” Santa Spice is a spiced ale, akin to a pumpkin beer. But instead of pumpkin, this beer will be spiced with peppermint, “which nobody has every done, so we’re going to do a small batch and see how it goes,” Griffiths says. Montauk Brewing Company has its Eastbound Brown Ale on tap now and anticipates releasing an as-of-yet unnamed stout around Christmas. “Stout and brown ale just kind of feel right when the weather’s cold,” says co-founder and partner Vaughan Cutillo. Eastbound Brown has a chocolaty flavor and a coffee

finish, “which is a great choice for the holiday season,” asserts Cutillo. The alcohol content is 5.7%. The brewing company’s stout is in the testing stage now. Cutillo expects it will have an alcohol content closer to 5%. Long Ireland Beer Company in Riverhead has two brews for the winter. Black Friday Imperial Stout will be released the day after Thanksgiving. The doors of the Riverhead taproom at 817 Pulaski Street will open at 9 a.m. and Long Ireland will hand out waffles made with beer topped with vanilla ice cream and candied bacon, co-owner Greg Martin says. Black Friday has a considerable alcohol content of 8.5%. The beer company’s Winter Ale, at 7.2%, is spiced with ginger, allspice and cinnamon. “This is a dark red beer with caramel and spice notes,” Martin said. “The higher alcohol also warms your insides.” Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, 234 Carpenter St., Greenport, harborbrewing.com; Crooked Ladder, 70 West Main St., Riverhead, crookedladderbrewing.com; Long Ireland Beer Company, 817 Pulaski St., Riverhead, longirelandbrewing.com; Publick House, 40 Bowden Square, Southampton, publick.com; Montauk Brewing Company, 62 South Erie Ave., Montauk, montaukbrewingco.com.

Raise a Glass to Local Holiday Spirits! Fancy a unique, locally inspired mixed drink this holiday season? The restaurants featured below—First and South in Greenport, Tweed’s in Riverhead, Delmonico’s Southampton and The Old Mill Inn in Mattituck—offer award-winning food in addition to full bars, and we turned to the experts behind those bars to share the recipes for their signature cocktails. Enjoy!

Sam’s Spiced Eggnog

By The Old Mill Inn’s Sam Batcheller 2 oz. Kraken spiced rum (or substitute Captain Morgan spiced rum) 2 oz. Aldo’s coffee, black (available at the Village Cheese Shop in Mattituck) About 4 oz. eggnog (fills rest of glass or shaker) Splash of simple syrup (optional, depending on if you like sweet or strong drinks) (simple syrup is sugar dissolved into hot water) Dash of cinnamon

For a martini version, fill a shaker with ice, pour ingredients over ice, shake well, strain into martini glass. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon and/or a cinnamon stick. For an “on the rocks” version, freeze Aldo’s coffee to make ice cubes, pour remaining ingredients over "coffee cubes," shake well and pour into tumbler.

Espresso-ho-ho Martini By Tweed’s Suzy Ribeiro 1 1 2 3 2 1

shot espresso oz. vanilla-flavored vodka oz. vodka oz. Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur oz. Kahlua mini candy cane

Combine all parts in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with mini candy cane.

Heart-Shaped Box By First and South’s Alicia Valle

4 oz. 44° North Wheat vodka* 2 oz. Aperol 1 spoonful of muddled cranberries *substitute a mild gin for vodka if desired **substitute club soda for ginger ale if desired

Shake all over ice. Strain into a 16 oz ice filled glass Top off with ginger ale** To make muddled cranberries, take a simple syrup recipe, add equal cups cranberries to sugar. Bring to a boil. Use one spoonful of the deliciously, sticky, sweetened cranberries for the cocktail and hold the rest of the syrup and muddled cranberries for other recipes. The vibrant, natural red color is holiday-perfect to swirl in sugar cookies or to make non-alcoholic beverages for kids.

Cider Prosecco

By Delmonico’s of Southampton’s Peter Perich 6 oz. Altaneve prosecco 1 oz. clear house-made apple cider 1 oz. Goldschläger liqueur 1 piece of crispy apple

In a champagne glass, pour the Altaneve prosecco. Add the apple cider and the Goldschläger liqueur. Top with dried crispy apple slice. You can purchase the apple cider and dried apple at your local gourmet market.

Winter pampering

K

eeping your skin, hair and nails looking lovely all winter long requires just an ounce of your time but a double dose of moisture. It’s crucial to get outdoors for your daily Vitamin D, but with all the blustery wind and dropping temperatures, it’s important to protect yourself from the elements’ ravaging effects. Indoor heat can be very drying, too, so even if most of your winter hours are spent at the office, take heed and follow these simple tips. The epidermis is affected by both internal and external factors, so to put your best face forward you’ve got to drink lots of water and eat nourishing foods. Popular dermatologist and author Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s “super” ingredients include Omega-3–rich wild salmon and eggs, antioxidant-rich dark leafy greens and berries, extra virgin olive oil, green tea, nuts and seeds, apples and pears, oatmeal, cinnamon, chickpeas, green tea and turmeric. Stress is also a factor, so be sure to breathe throughout the day and find healthy ways of unwinding—whether it’s yoga, a long walk or even cozying up with a cup of tea and Dan’s Papers. Amp up the hydration in your wintertime skincare regimen by switching to gentler products—if you’re using a gel moisturizer, you may want to switch to a richer creme, especially apres-ski or after a walk at Cooper’s Beach (the Southampton equivalent). If you have very dry or irritable skin, try a milky, soap-free cleanser like Calming Cleanse from AyurMedic. It reduces inflammation, protects against environmental damage and even contains Copper Peptide for tissue repair. Browse the full line of advanced skincare AyurMedic products at ayurmedic.com and pick up yours at Geomare Wellness Center, 80 White Street in Southampton. Winter is also a fun time to indulge in hydrating masks. A new favorite is the Manuka Doctor Purified Bee Venom Rejuvenating Face Mask. The Manuka Honey helps boost moisture and elastin while Royal Jelly and shea butter restore softness. It can also be used as a leave-on moisturizer for when your skin is particularly in need. It’s available 68 | november 29, 2013

online at sephora.com. Dr. Hauschka makes some very nice soothing masks—all available at Second Nature Markets in both Southampton and East Hampton and at Wild by Nature in Hampton Bays. For the most extreme conditions, you’ll love Radical Skincare’s Anti-Aging Replenishing Extreme Moisture. Cutting-edge ingredients form a second skin barrier against the elements. Find it at Space.NK.apothecary, spacenk.com. Don’t forget that delicate eye area! Be sure to use a gentle eye-makeup remover, like Sisley Gentle Eye and Lip Make Up Remover, which you can order online; or Almay, which you can find right at CVS or Rite Aid. A great new product is Ionzyme C-Quence Eye Gel, which is full of Vitamin A, C, E, and a host of polypeptides proven to reduce fine lines. Available at touchofskincare.com. Lastly, be sure to wear sunglasses— they’re not just for summer! Protect those tresses from split ends this winter (brought on by scarves, wind, cold and that pesky, drying heater) by using a deep conditioning mask a few times a week, avoiding elastic bands and scheduling regular trims. If you have long hair, put it in a braid to protect it from flying in the wind. If you can handle it, try not to shampoo every day. When you do wash your hair, be sure you’re using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Last but not least, take care of your hands and nails this winter by wearing gloves, moisturizing and using very gentle soap. With the influx of winter germs, you’ll want to wash your hands plenty, but using harsh antibacterial soaps can be disastrous. Keep them looking healthy and youthful with something like Kiss My Face Hand Soap Moisturizing Fragrance Free, which combines olive oil and aloe. Then slather on a nice, rich hand crème like Aveeno Intense Relief, which you can find just about anywhere. Before bed, dab a little Mario Badescu Cuticle Crème on your fingers and toes. Stave off winter blues and get festive with bright, fun nail polish colors—perfect for all your holiday soirees! hamptons holiday preview

A Holiday Home

Simple, Chic Decorating

D

an’s Papers “East End Nest” columnist and design expert Tamara Matthews-Stephenson shares some of her insights for happy, hassle-free holiday decorating: I plan to bring a pared-down approach to this year’s holiday decorating. Not to sound like the Grinch, but it’s become more labor-intensive to decorate during the holiday season. It started with the simple stringing of lights around the windows, followed by the roofline and trees. The job of dressing the house with the finest greenery and decorations has become very complicated. Sometimes, when the decorations come out, the tree goes up, the table is organized and the presents are wrapped under the tree, it can feel a little bit cluttered in our home. I want our house to be filled with holiday cheer, the smell of pine and cinnamon brings smiles to our faces as we sip eggnog next to a roaring fire. This year I plan to make it simple and elegant so the aesthetic will work better with my current design, and to avoid feeling overwhelmed with work during a busy season. Here are some simple, stylish tips to create a festive tone while leaving time for cooking, shopping and visiting with friends and family. As I unpack dozens of our tree ornaments, I realize my collection has grown over time. Many of them are family heirlooms, or antique mercury glass or simply interesting finds we picked up at shops over the years. Each ornament tells a story, and it’s fun to look them over individually, but after they’ve all been hung on the tree, the branches look weighed down. Rather, I decide to first group them together in color categories. I’ll then bring out my crystal and glassfooted bowl collection and arrange the ornaments in the bowls by color, displaying the glass bowls across my mantel, cascading down the dining table and greeting guests from the center front hall table. As an alternative to footed glass bowls, a collection of

Danspapers.com

hurricane lamps or glass vases would work just as well. Another simple holiday decorating idea to help set a pretty table is to gather maple or oak leaves and holly branches from the yard. I plan to use the leftover, small pumpkins from Halloween. I spread them out over newspaper and, using a can of silver or gold paint, spray them outdoors. Within minutes they dry and are transformed into glittery works of art. To create personalized table placeholders, I use a metallic red or green marker and write each guest’s name on the leaves. A gold or silver leaf-and-branch set on a pretty white plate is easy to make and creates an instantly elegant design. Because my ornaments will now be busy holding court on display, this will allow us to use more creativity when decorating our tree. This year, I plan to create a homemadelooking crafty and natural tree. It’s a perfect opportunity to get the kids involved. We will make a simple, cutout snowflake garland and string popcorn and cranberries. On etsy.com I found many bargains for crafty holiday decorating. This year would be a perfect time to bring out the boxes of the kids’ artwork we have stashed away, collecting dust. I plan to select smaller works © photo courtesy Williams-Sonoma of their art from nursery through grade school, wrapping paper to giftwrap our presents, I plan to punch a small hole on top, then string large black buy a solid paper in cost-saving bulk size. In order velvet ribbon and arrange around the tree. This year I to add ornamentation, I will tape or glue some of the bought a collection of vintage-looking, tiny ornaments extra gold or silver leaves, holly and pumpkins I had shaped like candles with clasps for attaching onto the painted to each gift. I may add some of the leftover branch tips, which will finish off the tree nicely with an paper snowflakes to some of the boxes as well. With old-fashioned feel. These activities are easy and fun, this color scheme, and using some of the items from plus it's a chance to get the whole family involved. It the tree, the look will be soothing, festive, yet simple becomes a sentimental way to create a personal tree. and inexpensive to boot. Best of luck with the holiday Instead of using many busy patterns of conflicting decorating this year!

Holiday in Lights

side from some premature Christmas music at local big box stores in October, the holidays typically arrive in twinkling lights. They begin as brief surprises and then slowly spread their shimmering, festive tendrils across the landscape until nearly everything features at least some illuminated vestige of seasonal joy. It’s the one time of year we can step out from behind the candelabra and ensconce our homes in such flamboyant glimmer that a neighborhood can resemble a miniature, Santa-themed version of Las Vegas. But this Noel Nevada— or even something more subdued—isn’t always so easy to accomplish. Jim Frankenbach of Southampton Christmas Lights (and Southampton Nursery) has been installing holiday lights on the East End for the last decade. “I have a bucket truck,” Frankenbach says, explaining that his old LIPA service truck is invaluable for making displays “higher, bigger, better” than your average home installation. Each year he begins the work, including municipal jobs like the Christmas trees in Southampton Village, right before Thanksgiving and completes most of it by the first weekend in December. It’s a busy time of year and the company serves people who don’t have time to install their own lights or want a pro's touch. He notes that “like a deli sandwich, some things are better when you don’t have to make them yourself.” For those who enjoy the challenge, Frankenbach says safety is of paramount

importance. LEDs cost more than standard bulbs, but they’re much safer and greener. “Don’t do silly things,” he continues, like overloading circuits, wiring through windows or linking too many light strands—each set will say how many can be put together safely. “The better the product, the more can be linked.” Frankenbach said white lights are in fashion on Christmas trees these days, but he’s a big fan of using red and white, as he first saw done in Canada, to reflect the country’s national colors. “I love it,” he says. “The two together look fantastic!” Of course, Christmas trees aren’t the only lights to consider inside the house. Ambient light is of the utmost importance, especially during the holidays, Hamptons interior designer and furniture dealer Todd Hase says. With a few simple changes, the feel of a home can shift from a casual summer pad to a warm winter den. “Table lamps can really set the mood,” Hase says. He noted that switching out summer lamps for crystal, Murano glass or porcelain table lamps would add an “elegant flair” in place of the more “beachy” vibe. “Any kind of metallic is very popular right now,” the designer adds. “It’s really important for people to seasonally style their home.” The right lighting, including votive candles in varied cylinders, he explained, can accentuate people’s complexions and make everyone more comfortable when the party moves indoors. As for Christmas tree lights? “Definitely white,” the designer says.

What's Trending for 2014

H

ome values across the country enjoyed a strong year in 2013, and the year ahead, although not predicted to show the same surge in appreciation, is nonetheless expected to bring growth and opportunity on both sides of the table—along with a few surprises, of course. Here on the East End, however, factors that influence national real estate don’t necessarily have the same impact as in other parts of the country, so we turned to a lineup of experts in the Hamptons and on the North Fork to share their insights into what 2014 will bring for buyers, sellers and investors.

I expect healthy levels of appreciation—some greater than others—but all should experience forward movement in price. The number of sales will depend on many factors, such as the stock market, Wall Street bonuses, international economies and consumer confidence. Interest rates, while vital to national home sales, are not a deal killer in the Hamptons.” —Judi Desidario, Town & Country 76 | november 29, 2013

Pricing is always set by ‘new construction.’ The increase in land prices this year will result in higher pricing of new homes in 2014. To be successful in your investment, you must think in the long-term. The market is continuing in an upward trend, specifically in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Hamptons. Real estate is a smart venture and the best way to safely invest in your future.” —Alan Schnurman, Saunders & Associates The market is doing great and waterfront is in high demand, especially Dune Road properties. I can only anticipate that we’re going to have an awesome spring with this momentum.” —Lynn November, Douglas Elliman Styled and Sold has seen more new construction in the last nine months than we have seen in the last few years, and we predict this trend will continue. Sales are hot and the lines have blurred on the typical ‘selling season,’ meaning the majority of rentals and sales are not confined to spring any longer. Presentation (staging, photography) will continue to be of utmost importance as more and more people first view their new homes online.” —Allegra Dioguardi, Styled and Sold

Sag Harbor is hot. By 2014, I predict it will be sizzling. Inventory of well-priced Sag Harbor homes is low, and homes that have been on the market for some time because of price are gone. The market is rising. I’ve recently had two bidding wars—one was at full asking price and another went above the asking.” —John Christopher, Brown Harris Stevens Real estate is on the rise with more sales, rentals and record prices expected for our breathtaking community. Yet, regulatory enforcement isn’t far behind, so sellers, buyers and landlords must be keen on watching code changes before making deals.” —Andrew Lieb, Lieb at Law, P.C. We have seen a very nice increase in business and feel confident it will continue going in the right direction. Pricing and inventory levels are down and the banks are loosening restrictions on borrowing—all good indicators. We’re excited to be opening another location in Quogue this December, and we plan to expand again in 2015.” —Beau Hulse, Beau Hulse Realty hamptons holiday preview

Real estate trends are continuing to head in a very good direction. People are looking to build homes that are more personal—not the same designs we see a lot of. I’ve been looking at properties with clients and guiding them through the steps necessary to build their dream home.” —Jeffrey Collé, Estates by Jeffrey Collé The fourth quarter has started off very busy and will easily carry over to the first quarter of 2014. The ‘under 2M market’ has easily increased dramatically, while the ‘over 6M–20M’ has equally increased. We’re being fueled by Wall Street and European investors. The south-of-the-highway inventory is depleting and vacant land is becoming hard to come by.” —Noel Love, Saunders & Associates

AmAgAnsett estAtes new custom homes reAdy for spring 2014

Like the U.S. economy, I think our real estate market will continue to improve, but slowly. Banks appear to be more user-friendly, and this may accelerate activity in the sluggish 2 to 4 milliondollar range. At the high end, I think we’ll see more record-breaking sales.” —Andrew Hart, Sotheby’s International The smartest move our clients have made in 2013 is buying a home in Montauk. The market has been very strong. With continued proper planning there will be a lot of positive changes for 2014.” —Nancy Keeshan, Keeshan Real Estate A year ago we had a lot of inventory, and everything has sold since then. Although there are fewer properties, transactions have been continuous. The market is moving in a healthy fashion. I think we will have a busy spring, and those clients looking to buy will have even more opportunities.” —Rylan Jacka, Sotheby’s International There's a push to make homes green and energy efficient. People are also trending toward transitional homes—homes that pay homage to historical architecture but are a blend of modern and tranditional designs.” —John Laffey, John Laffey Architects
