collective

impact

To Our Members, At Detroit Public Television, we often use phrases such as “understanding the issues,” “meaningful change” and “collective impact.” It’s because we believe that public media’s proper role is to be a neutral communication partner helping people and organizations achieve their goals. Our emphasis is on engaging our community and region to understand – and solve – important issues. If we can showcase Detroit’s success stories to a national audience, that’s even better. In these pages, you’ll read about our coverage of The Great Lakes Water and Mackinac Policy Conferences which reached far greater audiences beyond those in attendance. You’ll read about Arab American Stories, produced here and aired nationally to spotlight real people leading real lives. You’ll also see how public media helps artists, educators and people of all ages. Sometimes, though, we just want to be entertained. From Downton Abbey to our high-spirited production of Il Volo Takes Flight at the Detroit Opera House, to our live web and radio broadcasts of Detroit Symphony Orchestra concerts, we consistently give you the best seat in the house – and we do all of this in partnership with you. We’re grateful for the trust you place in Detroit Public Television and promise to work even harder to earn your continued support. Together, we can help others – especially our youngest viewers – discover the world, understand issues, engage in critical thinking,

and

thrive

in

this

wonderful

enterprise

That, truly, demonstrates “collective impact.” Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Melonie Colaianne Chair, Board of Trustees

Lights, Camera, Action The Detroit Public TV production team is in perpetual motion as it creates programs that educate, entertain and inspire. On the Road

In Midtown Detroit

DPTV’s digital production truck, unique in the region, was used this year to capture important events and great performances, including:

In partnership with Wayne State University, DPTV utilizes a TV studio in Detroit’s historic Maccabees building to tape episodes of Leaders on Leadership, American Black Journal and other productions as necessary. The studio even hosted a DPTV Board meeting in February to acquaint trustees with the space that once was home to “The Soupy Sales Show.” Look for our signage on Woodward Avenue just north of Warren Avenue.

• Great Lakes Now Water Conference (Cleveland, Ohio)

• Mackinac Policy Conference (Mackinac Island)

• Detroit Symphony Orchestra Concerts

• Detroit Economic Club Seminars

• Freedom Riders event at The Charles H. Wright Museum

• Children’s Hospital of Michigan Seminar

• Kid Rock live at Comerica Park

• Detroit Jazz Festival

• Detroit July 4th Fireworks (with WDIV)

• The Michigan Lottery

• High School Football Finals (Mt. Pleasant, Michigan)

At the Riley Broadcast Center In addition to the many programs produced for DPTV Media, our three studios in Wixom – the Bill & Patsy Smith studio; the Ford Motor Company studio; and Boll Family studio – were busy serving clients, with: • More than 100 episodes of Ask Dr. Nandi, featuring Troy gastroenterologist Dr. Partha Nandi • A 30-minute TV special, Caregivers Confronting the Care System for The Altarum Institute • Crossfire, a series of web-based continuing education video courses for medical professionals, produced for New York-based Peerless Health.

I just wanted to drop a line of th anks to whomev er is involved in th e program dire ction at DPTV. Most notably, fo r a few of the m usic-themed shows that have aired in the late night weekend slots as of late . I simply wanted to let you know these choices that were not going un noticed. DPTV provides an ex cellent alternat ive to the usua mindlessness of l major network programming, and I hope it co ntinues to thriv e and survive for man y years to com e. -Matt

Arts and Culture Detroit Public Television and WRCJ 90.9 FM give you a front-row seat to the world’s best performances. We also partner with local arts and cultural organizations to help them reach greater audiences.

Il Volo, Detroit Opera House and Michigan Opera Theatre A nationwide PBS hit this year was DPTV’s production of Il Volo Takes Flight, featuring the three amazing Italian teenage tenors in concert at the historic Detroit Opera House. DPTV’s successful launch landed Il Volo on the Billboard Classical Crossover music charts at #1, #2 and #9 for five consecutive weeks and in the hearts of millions of new fans. The special was a major fundraising success for PBS stations throughout America.

WRCJ 90.9 FM broadcast live all four operas presented by The Michigan Opera Theatre in 2011-2012. Each opera was preceded by a two-hour episode of MOT Unmasked which took listeners “under the hood” to learn more about the history and staging of that opera. Detroit Symphony Orchestra Through DPTV-produced webcasts and live radio broadcasts on 90.9 FM, more than 125,000 people in 75 countries were able to discover the musical excellence of our Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Other collaborations with the DSO included radio broadcasts of their Civic youth ensembles; episodes of DSO Unmasked to provide a greater understanding of DSO music and musicians; and WRCJ media sponsorship of the DSO Neighborhood Concert Series.

Arab American Stories 2012 saw the premiere of Arab American Stories, a 13-part series produced by Detroit Public TV to explore the diversity of the Arab American experience. NPR’s Neda Ulaby hosts each half-hour episode featuring Arab Americans making an impact in their community, their professions, their family or the world at large.

Detroit Public Schools Each month on WRCJ 90.9 FM, Detroit Public Schools presents four hours of programming showcasing DPS student and teacher talents and achievements. DPS students gain media production skills in creating the programs.

DPTV Media Detroit Public Television is a leading provider of fundraising specials for PBS stations throughout America. Our entertainment label, DPTV Media, discovers and presents popular and emerging musical artists and health and lifestyle experts. In addition to the smash hit Il Volo Takes Flight, musical specials this year included:

• Daniel O’Donnell Live from Nashville

• John Tesh Big Band Live

• Music of your Life: Les Brown, Jr. Band of Renown with vocalist Neil McCoy

Sphinx Organization

• Irish Rovers: Home in Ireland

In February 2012, DPTV and WRCJ broadcast the annual Sphinx Finals Concert, showcasing young Black and Latino classical music string players. The TV production went flawlessly despite a last-minute venue change due to a public utility mishap at the original concert hall. The DPTV production crew pulled all equipment, moved, and reset all cables, cameras and controls in the new facility within four hours!

• The Best of Soul Train

WRCJ also produced seven one-hour episodes of Sphinx Journeys, hosted by Aaron Dworkin, featuring classical music by Black and Latino composers and performers. The programs may be heard “on demand” at wrcjfm.org.

Through 163 workshops in disadvantaged communities, Detroit Public TV’s Vernita Beverly distributed literacy tools and resources to more than 4,500 children and caregivers.

In June, everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur, Barney, joined DPTV again for the annual Kids Club Live as he sang and danced for several thousand children at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. Other attractions at the two-day event included arts and crafts, WRCJ 90.9 FM instrument “petting zoo,” PBS KIDS GO! characters, Raising Readers tent, goodies from Meijer, and health tips from Children’s Hospital of Michigan/DMC.

Additionally, DPTV participated in the launch of the Ready to Learn Transmedia Project, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Partnering with Wayne RESA, DPTV distributed 50 iPads to more than 25 local partner organizations for the purpose of fostering greater use of PBS KIDS content and to research how technological platforms can improve student learning.

Addressing the Issues Detroit Public TV believes in using the power of public media to help people understand important issues and engage them to create positive outcomes for their communities. Great Lakes Week

Mackinac Policy Conference

In October 2011, an unprecedented number of government and private organizations responsible for management of the Great Lakes met in Detroit to explore issues and solutions for our region’s most precious resource. Thanks to funding from The Erb Family Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the International Joint Commission, DPTV used 15 cameras in six locations (and a small army of broadcast professionals) to provide:

For the second year in a row, Detroit Public TV collaborated with the Detroit Regional Chamber to provide gavel-togavel coverage of the May 2012 Mackinac Policy Conference. While 1,500 business, government and community leaders were on Mackinac Island to hear the speakers and panels, many thousands more benefitted from DPTV’s analysis and additional features available on-air or online. With generous support from The Center for Michigan, DTE Energy Foundation, Health Alliance Plan, The Masco Foundation, PVS Chemicals, and the University of Michigan Dearborn, Detroit Public TV was able to provide:

• 25 hours of C-SPAN-style coverage of conference speakers enhanced with interviews with notable scientists, government officials, and other partici- pants

• Live gavel-to-gavel coverage hosted by Christy McDonald and branded MiVote Mackinac. This content was broadcast live on DPTV Chan- nel 56.2 in Southeast Michigan and available world wide via a live internet stream

• Broadcast and distribution of a 30-minute wrap-up show each day of the three-day conference •

A webcast with live and on-demand coverage of conference events and speakers, including a keynote address by former Vice President Al Gore

• Mackinac Tonight, a 30-minute recap show each evening of the conference, aired on Channel 56 and fed via satellite to other broadcasters

• A mini-documentary about the major issues facing the Great Lakes •

• Special Mackinac editions of MiWeek and Under the Radar Michigan

Distribution to many organizations through television partnerships, embeddable video sharing, and the presence of partner journalists at the event. In all, Great Lakes Week was carried on-air or online by public television stations in 12 states reaching nearly 25% of America.

• Free cut-and-paste streaming video player to any individual or organization interested in playing the live feed or on-demand content

In our view, this is a perfect example of how public media can help organizations achieve their goals by connecting them with larger audiences. The Association of Public Television Stations agreed, awarding Detroit Public Television one of only two awards for outstanding service in 2011.

MiWeek

Affordable Care Act

In March, DPTV launched a new news/public affairs program to meet the community’s evolving need for journalism-focused context and perspective on the top news and issues affecting our region. MiWeek airs Friday nights and is anchored by veteran broadcast journalist Christy McDonald. Joining her each week for analysis are Nolan Finley, Detroit News editorial page editor, and Stephen Henderson, editorial page editor of the Detroit Free Press.

Through the fall of 2011, MiVote.org and Michigan Consumers for Healthcare joined forces to host a series of community conversations across Michigan. The goal was to help interested citizens learn more about the Affordable Care Act and the decisions facing Michigan’s lawmakers and government leaders. A 30-minute special, hosted by Christy McDonald, summarized those conversations and answered viewer questions about health care reform.

American Black Journal

Vital Signs

Now in its 45th year of weekly programs, American Black Journal is a window into American history. Today, the show continues to be a vibrant and provocative forum for newsmakers, celebrities and everyday people. Every Sunday, host Stephen Henderson introduces viewers to guests that shed light on Detroit’s people, politics and most pressing concerns.

Produced in cooperation with The Detroit Wayne County Health Authority, Vital Signs is a 30-minute program offering a first-person look at health issues in Southeast Michigan. The program — designed to be a pilot broadcast for a possible future series — introduced viewers to people, families, professionals and institutions dealing with issues of childhood mental health. This program, and many others, are available “on demand” at dptv.org.

Leaders On Leadership Hosted by Larry Fobes and produced in cooperation with the Wayne State School of Business, Leaders on Leadership explores the “craft” of leadership with CEOs of business and governmental organizations. A highlight of this past season was our interview with Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. Each show is taped with a studio audience of WSU business students, giving them up-close experience with successful leaders.

Dear Commissioner Genachowski, I would like to let the FCC know of my hearty support of WRCJ, the classical and jazz music station in Detroit. I learned on the radio that they are up for their license renewal this fall, so I would like to make sure that you know how very much they are appreciated and needed in the Detroit metropolitan area. Looking at your website, I only saw where to register a complaint. This letter is just the opposite. WRCJ’s programming is unique in our area. It is the only place where I can hear classical music in the morning hours as I get up and get ready for the day. I am so proud of this station and certainly hope that you will continue its license. Respectfully, - Eleanor Linn, Ann Arbor MI 22.

I just want to let you know how much I enjoy volunteering for Channel 56. It’s a lot of fun and fellowship and we are helping the organization raise money. The DPTV staff make us feel welcome, and I have met a lot of interesting, committed volunteers who also enjoy [DPTV]. It’s an hour’s ride each way from home to the studio but I don’t mind. Have a great fall and I will see you for the winter pledge drive! Best regards, - Ken Isherwood
