Scientists believe that the warm waters in the Mediterranean and the warm water discharge from electricity power plants in the winter months draw sharks to Palestine’s coasts, whose numbers have risen in the last years.

Shark meat is considered one of the special seafood meals on the dining tables in the Gaza Strip. It is distinguished by its delicious taste, and the price per kilogram ranges between 20 – 30 Israeli shekels (6.5 – 9.5 US dollars) in the fish markets of the Gaza Strip, Palestine. Tons of sharks are caught every year in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Fishermen off the shores of Khan Younis Sea, south of the Gaza Strip, managed on 24.05.2017 to catch abundant quantities of sharks. Mr. Fouad Al-Amoudi, head of the Fishermen’s Union in Khan Younis, said in a press statement that sharks invaded the shores of Khan Younis Sea, indicating that about 120 sharks of varying sizes were caught (Meqdad, 24.05.2017). It is noteworthy that sharks invade the shores of the Gaza Strip every year in March and extend to late April, pointing out that this year’s season is delayed until May (Meqdad, 24.05.2017). Mr. Al-Amoudi pointed out that the price of one kilogram of sharks is sold in the local fish markets at prices ranging from 27 – 33 Israeli shekels (8.5 – 10.5 US dollars). The Palestinians of the Gaza Strip call sharks “Samak Al-Wahsh” (The Monster Fish) or “AlFatal” (The Spinner) (Meqdad, 24.05.2017).

sharks, off the coast of Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, weighing each between 10 to 50 kilograms, in an amount estimated at three and a half tons. The fish was caught using 10 fishing boats, according to the General Administration of Fish Resources in the Gaza Strip (Al-Quds Al-Arabi, 18.02.2019).

Despite the daily Israeli violations against Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip and the policy of closing the Sea of Gaza and restricting it to areas in which there is less fishing, the fishermen continue to work in light of their poor economic conditions due to continuation of the blockade and siege on the Gaza Strip (RT-Online, 12.01.2020). Working in the fishing sector in the Gaza Strip are about four thousand Palestinian fishermen, who support about 50 thousand people, while Israel has imposed, for more than 14 years, a continuous siege on more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which led to the deterioration of their living and health conditions (RT-Online, 12.01.2020).
