HERE WE GO... I’m not sure which day of med school I missed, but I never learned that health is balance. Health IS Balance. What?!?! Where was I that day? Yes, I learned about homeostasis and our body’s attempt to maintain equilibrium, but the ‘health is balance’ pearl didn’t squeeze its way into my head until YEARS later in practice. And I’m so grateful it did! To stay physically and mentally healthy you need a diet and lifestyle that support a balanced body and a quiet mind. But what tools do you need to be a spiritually healthy person? When life is not going your way how do you ease your mind chatter, soften your heart, and connect to Spirit? To practice Health SoulFULLY you need to honor your intuition - your ability to CONNECT with Spirit. It is a birthright most of us shut out because we tend to spend our lives in pursuit of more knowledge. WE HONOR THE RATIONAL MIND - THE INTELLECT, THE EGO - AND WE TELL OUR HEART TO BE QUIET. I don’t remember the first moment I decided to become a doctor, but I do remember my truest intention in becoming one was to somehow, in someway, help others. It was a heart calling, calling me to ease another’s suffering. So the journey began: med school; residency; chief residency. Head down, in the grind, focused on sucking in every last drop of knowledge possible, year after year. Learning from books, then from mentors, then from some academy telling me the “right” thing to do. When I finished my chief residency year, and started my own practice in less than six months, I was profoundly grateful for all the knowledge my mentors and textbooks had provided me.

I followed the academy guidelines. I tried my best to do everything “right”. But within two years I felt imbalanced and disconnected. I WAS THINKING MY WAY THROUGH LIFE WITHOUT PAUSING TO ASK HOW I WAS FEELING. As a result, my actions were more fear driven than heart driven.

Why was I a medical doctor anyway? My intention had remained the same - I wanted to help people who were suffering. After the long haul of schooling and training, I looked up and realized that somehow along my medical journey I had squeezed mySelf, my heart’s calling, out of the picture. I thought I was on my right path, but I had lost my way. Or was I finding my way? I knew how I had gotten to where I was, but I wasn’t sure how I’d get back to feeling balanced and connected to the Spirit of medicine that initially called me. I WANTED MY HEART, MY SPIRIT, TO DRIVE MY ACTIONS AND QUIET DOWN MY FEAR-FILLED MIND.

FINDING

your way IT WAS AS IF MY TEN YEARS OF HEAD SCHOOLING - SOAKING UP KNOWLEDGE WERE FOLLOWED BY TEN MORE YEARS OF HEART SCHOOLING - CONNECTING WITH SPIRIT. My fourth miscarriage (a second trimester loss) hit my personal growth acceleration pedal. Loss has a way of doing that. I had to elevate myself above the dark cloud of miscarriage I was standing under. I had to find a higher meaning for my deep sorrow. Why were these miscarriages happening? I began to ask. Not God. Not Christ. But Angels. I asked Angels. I have no idea why I chose Angels. Maybe Angels chose me! I craved balance between my head and my heart. Health is balance. So I followed my heart and dove into Spiritual boot camp. During this process I took time to quiet my mind and ask the Angels

a lot of questions. Imagine that annoying student who raises her hand with just one more question - that was me! But no one else was in class, just mySelf, my pen and some paper.

Take time to quiet your mind and lean into a divine conversation. Every question I wrote down had lots of answers. The answers didn’t always come immediately, and were not always black and white, but that didn’t matter. With a quiet mind, I leaned into a divine conversation. When I asked, “Why are these miscarriages happening?” one answer I received was, “They’re happening.” Conception was happening. Sitting with this answer for a while SHIFTED MY FOCUS from the sadness and grief that comes with loss, to the miracle of conceiving. My heart opened to the answer that conception IS a miracle. This somehow filled me with faith. I began to trust in the DIVINE ORDER of my parenting journey. My heart desired to be a Mama. Although I kept miscarrying, I was mothering these little ones. Our time together just felt too short. My original view of what mothering looks like changed. This mindshift allowed me to feel JOY as we continued to try to bring our baby into this world. ILLUMINATION. Balance between my head and my heart was returning. I was finding my way.

Are you stuck IN DIS-EASE?

M

y definition of health began to expand beyond physical and mental to include Spirit. I explain health and dis-ease (balance and imbalance) with a teeter-totter. Imagine yourself standing IN THE MIDDLE of the teeter-totter, over the pivot. When you are happy and healthy you are able to balance yourself over the pivot of the teeter-totter. Despite the life stressors that plop on either end of your teeter-totter, you are able to adapt and remain balanced. You’re bright. BRAVE. Beautifully balanced. Happy. Healthy. FREE! But life inevitably plops sh*t on your teeter-totter that throws you off balance. Life stresses your system. Think of life stressors as if someone came and sat on the left end of your teeter-totter. Thud!

IF YOU DON’T ADAPT, IF YOU DON’T MOVE YOURSELF TOWARDS THE RIGHT END OF THE TEE-

TER-TOTTER, YOU WILL BE STUCK IN DIS-EASE. You will no longer be able to move in ways necessary to balance yourself over the pivot. You will no longer be flowing, happy and at ease.

When life plops sh*t on your teeter, stressing you towards disease, what tools can you use to rebalance back to health? To stay physically and mentally healthy, you need a diet and lifestyle that support a balanced body and a quiet mind. BUT WHAT TOOLS DO YOU NEED TO BE A SPIRITUALLY HEALTHY PERSON? When life is not going your way how do you ease your mind chatter, soften your heart and connect to Spirit? You balance your head smarts (intellect), by toning up and strengthening your flabby heart smarts (intuition).

and lean into a conversation with that invisible dimension that lies within you and within other Spiritual beings. You open your heart to see, hear, feel and know Spirit, so you can intuitively perceive your life as it unfolds. We all use different words to refer to Spirit. Don’t let my words trip you up! I use Spirit and heart most often, Divine and God less often. Find a word that works for you. Maybe it’s Soul, Love, Grace, or something else. You could even make up your own word. Go for it! Words don’t matter. Your intention to connect to your own soul, and a force greater than you, is what matters.

TAKE ACTION STEP 2 NOW TAKE YOUR HEALTH WORDS FROM STEP 1 AND GET CREATIVE. Get visual. Cut out pictures from magazines that represent your health words VISUALLY. Now paste those images and words together on a separate piece of paper. I use black construction paper. It’s a blank slate, plus no one else uses it in my house. CREATIVITY IS LIBERATING. THIS IS FOR YOU. Y.O.U. NO ONE ELSE NEEDS TO SEE IT. When you’re done, celebrate your piece of art by giving it space somewhere you will see it everyday. Maybe inside your closet door where only your eyes hit it, or on your bathroom mirror. Find a place and pin that baby up! This is you - physically, mentally, spiritually - healthy. A visual reminder of who you are in body, mind and spirit. Love and light.

THE WARRIOR WITH

angel wings A

s my definition of health expanded to include Spirit, I imagined this physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy person to look like a warrior with angel wings. Many people hear the word warrior and think “fierce fighter.” In spite of physical and mental exhaustion, in spite of fear, the warrior soldiers on. But the warrior archetype has many layers: the warrior is physically and mentally STRONG; she’s BRAVE; she masters her body and mind by honoring

her strengths and accepting her weaknesses; a warrior is also spiritually aware. When she aligns with Spirit she can SEE the divine in her life’s journey, FEEL the divine support her, and HEAR the divine breathe, “Keep going, you’re on your right path.” When she is balanced she KNOWS Spirit fully supports her. All she has to do is STOP resisting. TRUST. LET GO. FULLY SURRENDER AND DANCE BETWEEN INTELLECT AND INTUITION.

We honor the rational mind - the intellect, the ego - and we tell our heart to be quiet. “Shhh,” we say, “not now.” WE HONOR WHAT WE THINK AND STOP HONORING HOW WE FEEL. BUT WE NEED TO HONOR BOTH. The warrior with angel wings knows what she thinks AND how she feels drive the actions she takes, and therefore the results she achieves. If she stops listening to what her heart desires, buries her wings and soldiers on as a warrior, wouldn’t she get different results than if she spread out her wings to fly?

We have the choice to honor our sacred gift - intuition - but we choose to be faithful servants to our rational mind. This imbalance leads to dis-ease. A dis-connect. A WARRIOR WITHOUT HER WINGS IS NO LONGER ALIGNED AND CONNECTED WITH WHAT IS IN HER HEART, HER SPIRITUAL TRUTH. When she disconnects from her heart, from Spirit, she suffers. Mind distractions pull her away from heart connections. Feeling, hearing and seeing Spirit in her life becomes a struggle. She’s more fearFULL than soulFULL. HEALTH IS BALANCE. Being a physically, mentally, spiritually healthy person is a way of life. A practice to BALANCE your body, QUIET your mind, and open your heart so you can CONNECT with Spirit. It’s Health SoulFULLY. To be truly connected with Spirit, to ourSelf and to others, we must be STILL. Being still is a state of openness. A blank slate. A pause - your brainwaves iron out and your heart cracks open. In this space you are a multi-sensory spiritual being. Your mind is quiet and still so you can sense what your heart, Spirit, has to say on the matter. And then, you can spread your wings and fly.

ANDREA LIBUTTI, MD Andrea Libutti, MD, is a board-certified emergency-medicine physician and has spent several years in private practice treating children with autism from a mind-body-spirit perspective. Her book Awakened by Autism shares her journey of discovery and healing as a mother of a child living with autism. She runs the Autism Wellness Revolution Workshops, empowering parents to heal their children and discard limiting beliefs. ANDREA, I REALLY WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR STORY. WHAT LED YOU TO BECOME A DOCTOR? When I was a child I wanted to be a veterinarian. I was always drawn to helping animals and people. When I was a teenager, and then in my early 20s, I was in a different place and wasn’t a big studier. I ended up getting a marketing/ business degree and then started my career as a marketing manager. After five years of doing that I just kind of went gosh, there’s gotta be something more to life than this. I liked what I was doing, but I didn’t feel fulfilled. I was 30 when I started medical school. I chose emergency medicine. It just felt like a great fit for me because it is so diverse and it involves working in a high energy environment. I felt like I could make a big difference in people’s lives on a day to day basis.

HOW DID YOUR SON AFFECT YOUR MEDICAL CAREER? When my son Jack was diagnosed with autism I started looking at the biomedical aspect of autism and health. I began to discover that we live on a poisoned planet, so to speak. We are doing things that probably aren’t the most healthy and that might be contributing to childhood illness. I spent years studying autism - the environmental influences, diet – and then I started getting into the emotional and spiritual aspects of it. That’s how I ended up where I am now. For a couple of years I had a private practice where I was treating children with autism. When you’re treating kids and families with autism it’s very intense. It is not like emergency medicine where you can go home and shut it off. You’re constantly thinking about these kids, and what can be done, and what

am I missing, and what about this and that. I found myself really moving away from my family. I didn’t like it because I had three boys at home, I had a husband, and I was not focused where I felt I needed to be. Recognition that I needed to adjust my focus led me to want to write a book. I felt I could help people in a broader sense and I could also create an online community. The help and support I could provide might not be as detailed and individualized, but I felt I could at least reach a group of people that needed help and either didn’t have the money to

go to an autism specific physician, or didn’t know where to start. I felt like I could reach this audience in this way and still fulfill my roles as wife and mother.

HOW DID YOU TRANSITION FROM STUDYING THE PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF HEALTH INTO THE EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL ASPECTS? I read a book called The Horse Boy. It was a great book about a father who has a son with autism. The father takes his child to Mongolia on horseback in search of the shamans who the father believes are going to help heal his son. After I read that book I thought, I want a shaman too! So I found a shaman in Vermont. That was the springboard into the spiritual, mind-spirit part of my life.

DID YOU VISIT THE SHAMAN BY YOURSELF? No, I took the whole family there and made a Father’s Day

weekend out of it. The shaman worked with Jack while he was asleep, for about two hours, doing all the stuff that shaman’s do. Afterwards she sat at a table with us, and she looked at me and said, “Your son is in a constant state of trying to return to the ecstasy of death.” I wanted to vomit right there. I was just about knocked off my chair. The shaman explained that Jack wants to be connected to the oneness that he had – the euphoria of being connected to God. Over the course of a year it just started to make sense. I went, Ahhh, this is so cool. There was this whole other aspect of life that I hadn’t really contemplated before. Everything just kind of unfolded from there.

HOW DID YOU END UP AT GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN’S SPIRIT JUNKIE MASTERCLASS CONFERENCE? AS A FELLOW ATTENDEE, I REMEMBER BEING SO EXCITED AFTER LEARNING ABOUT YOU, YOUR BOOK, AND YOUR MISSION AS A MOM AND DOCTOR.

I came to the conclusion that my child was more connected to his higher self than I had ever been. If you can imagine, he was up here and I was down there, and he needed to come down a little and I needed to move up a little. I started working on myself and thinking how do I rise up? I focused on living more from my higher self and my heart center than on this physical plane in order to connect with my son. I also focused on helping him integrate into the physical plane more than he was capable of doing. It was my own spiritual journey that came out of that.

Along the way, I looked at all the different Hay House authors and discovered Gabrielle Bernstein. I just love her stuff and her message. So I went to her conference to work on myself.

HAVE YOU FOUND TOOLS THAT HAVE HELPED YOU MAINTAIN BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE? I think the most important thing I’ve done in the last year is carve out time for myself. I just started training for a triathlon and on Thursday nights I go to the pool to swim. My husband takes over.

IS ATHLETICS YOUR OUTLETS?

Yeah. I like doing triathlons and I do yoga. I still love writing and reading. I have group of girlfriends and we do a lot of fun things together. We do painting classes, pottery classes and we have parties. That’s the other part of my down time that really nurtures me so I can be a great mom.

DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE AUTHORS, TEACHERS? SOMEBODY YOU IDOLIZE? FOR ME IT’S DEFINITELY OPRAH AND DEEPAK. DO YOU HAVE ANYONE LIKE THAT? Yes. I love Gabby Bernstein, Kris Carr, Wayne Dyer, Marie Forleo and Neale Donald Walsch. Mike Dooley too. I love listening to Abraham Hicks. Specific to autism, Suzy Miller wrote one of my favorite books called Awesomism. Oprah and Deepak are the biggest names that I love and follow.

WHAT OR WHO IS YOUR GREATEST SUPPORT IN DOING THE WORK THAT YOU’RE DOING? I have the most amazing writing coach in the world, Neil. He helped me structure my book Awakened by Autism. He was the perfect coach to make the book come out the way it did. He has been my biggest professional support. I would say I get support from listening to

people like Marie Forleo and Gabby Bernstein. There’s all kinds of uplifting stuff out there. And I’ve got my friends. My husband totally supports me on a personal level.

WHAT ABOUT THE OPPOSITE OF THAT? ARE THERE THINGS THAT BRING YOU DOWN, MAKE YOU FRUSTRATED, MAKE YOU FEEL DISCONNECTED? Oh yeah. The sheer amount of work that needs to be done to get the Awakened by Autism message out sometimes really over-

whelms me. It’s hard work. Some days I wake up and I’m like, yeah I got this, and it just flows out of me and everything clicks. Other days I think, oh can I just hang out and plant my garden? I’m not afraid of hard work, but sometimes fear shows up when I think, Is somebody going to really rip me apart for my message?

DO YOU HAVE TOOLS TO HELP YOU WITH FEAR? I think the fear is the bigger problem than actually speaking the truth. If you focus on the fear, the fear will grow and there’ll be reason to fear. If you can just stay the course and say, I’m doing this for the right reasons. I’m doing it because I want to help people, and you stay in that heart-centered place, then I think that’s probably the best you can do.

THAT’S SUCH A GREAT ANSWER. STAY HEART-CENTERED AND FOCUSED ON WHY YOU’RE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. HOW COULD YOU BE

LED ASTRAY, RIGHT? Yeah, focus on that, and it will carry you through. Setting your intentions and talking to your angels. I do all that too.

WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE OF IN YOUR LIFE? I want more inner peace. I still struggle with stuff. I get the whole separation from the Divine. I wish I could tap into the Divine more frequently so the lows didn’t have to be so low. If I could tap into that, I think I could be a more effective teacher, healer, parent, wife.
