TRILOGY OF DOROTHY CIRCUS GALLERY VOL. 2 Once Upon a Time is the first of the trilogy telling the story of Dorothy Circus Gallery, one of the most famous contemporary art galleries in Rome. Alexandra Mazzanti, owner and curator, stood out immediately for her artistic foresight and her unconditional love for the Low Brow & Pop Surrealism movements. She deeply

THE COMPLETE TRILOGY TELLING THREE YEARS IN THE HISTORY OF A LANDMARK FOR POP SURREALISM The book series gathers all the exhibitions that the Dorothy Circus Gallery, European benchmark for Pop Surrealism, has hosted in its spaces from October 2010 to February 2014. The long list of artists, involved in both solo and group shows, includes among others: Tara McPherson, Ray Caesar, Aaron Jasinski, Miss Van, Nathalie Shau, Naoto Hattori, Colin Chri-
stian, Clementine de Chabaneix and Kazuki Takamatsu. The books contains images, biographies, critic texts, which contribute to develop a vision, as much exhaustive as possible, of the gallery’s activity and an idea of the Pop Surrealist movement which enlivens the Dorothy Circus Gallery since 2007, when the gallery was founded by Alexandra Mazzanti.

THE BOOK
THE FIRST MONOGRAPH BY THE JAPANESE ARTIST KAZUKI TAKAMATSU Published on the occasion of the solo show “Even a Doll can do it” at the Dorothy Circus Gallery, the book allows the reader to discover Kazuki Takamatsu’s iconography, its roots – from nature to manga – and the dialogue between popular culture, technology and the study of moods and states of mind. This intimate universe, permeated by melancholy, recalls the fight
between the good and the evil featuring feminine bodies, half dolls, with japanese features, painted in black and white through the depth mapping technique, which gets from digital research to gouache and acrylic painting, achieving a multilayered and tridimensional effect, full of transparencies, inspired by the holograms and the X-ray vision.

THE BOOK
THE MOST EXTENSIVE PUBLICATION OF THE ARTIST’S ŒUVRE SO FAR In 1989 Daim realized his first works in the public space – in 2014 the artist looks back on his artistic career that spans 25 years. This book gives an all-embracing insight in the work of the artist for the first time, from the beginnings of his career that started with illegal works on the street, covering the time of his studies of fine arts in Switzerland up to the present, in which his works can mostly be seen in large scale museum presentations.
This book shows the development of the works of the artist over a course of 25 years and also all important periods of his œuvre in more than 300 colour images, of which some have never been published before. Murals, canvases, sculptures, editions, graphics and the later tapings can be seen. The images furthermore grant a look behind the scenes and show production processes of some of the artworks.

“I ATTEMPT TO CAPTURE AN INSTANT DURING THE ACTION....” (WK) Act-4 25 Years is a book that brings together 25 years of the work of WK Interact, from the beginnings in 1989 to the present day. It is a sort of an anthology where his most important works are collected. From his very first show as 17-Painting Installation at Colette Gallery in Paris, France (1998) or the exhibition at Dazed & Confused Gallery in London, UK (2002) until the WK-360 mid – career survey documenting 25 years at Jonathan Levine Gallery,
NYC (2013). In the late 1990s his images began appearing on building facades in downtown Manhattan, complimenting the constant stir of bodies and the perpetual motion of contemporary urban life in the fast-paced city and for 25 years WK has never stopped working on the street. The book will also feature several interviews with WK and an exhaustive biography.

THE BOOK
THE CATALOG OF THE FIRST FIVE EDITIONS OF THE OUTDOOR URBAN ART FESTIVAL The festival was founded in 2010 as the urban redevelopment of the Ostiense district in Rome through large public art works up to lead, in 2014, to an extraordinary location within the district of San Lorenzo. Over the years, Outdoor has expanded and opened to different artistic practices and murals interventions (both permanent and temporary), always able to interact with the land and its people, improving the quality of life and common areas. “Only then art will be found in the place where it can express the maximum of its value: everywhere.” as Mi-
chele Trimarchi writes in the introduction of the catalog. ROMA WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY shows the highlights that have marked the festival – such as the interventions of artists Herbert Baglione, Kid Acne, Agostino Iacurci, SAM3, C215, just to name a few, Martha Cooper’s photographic exhibition and the crowdfunding operation (the first in Italy), which made the realization of the immense wall by Sten and Lex possible – along with critical essays and descriptive texts of all the figures occurred over the years.

THE BOOK
THE LAST TEN YEARS IN THE CAREER OF MAUREN BRODBECK The Genevan artist Mauren Brodbeck overrides with her work the borders between art genres, creating multilayered images able to call the limits between real and virtual into question. Photography, collage, graphics are only a few of the instruments she uses to undermine our perceptive frames of mind. The use of color applied to elements of the urban landscape as buildings, car parks, warehouses, hides them while, at the same time, makes them mo-
numental. The same happens with the colored objects, similar to oversized sculptures, the artist includes within her city views. The dialogue between presence and absence can be found in the processing of the human figure, where the color transforms the bodies into silhouettes, in order to underline the passage from one state of the form to another.

most of all, music. “They say you should lock your food up in closed containers while camping in bear country to keep uninvited bear guests from crashing your campsite, but if these are the kind of bears they’re talking about, we’d set up a four-course candlelit meal to lure them by the hundreds.” (Matthew Tharrett, Queerty.com)

“PERVASIVE ART” IMPRINTING THE CITY’S MEMORIES THROUGH THE TESTIMONY OF ITS INHABITANTS
27
JR owns the biggest art gallery on the planet - he exhibits for free in the streets of the world, catching the attention of ordinary people as they pass by. His career as an artist began after finding a camera in the Paris subway at the age of 18. After completing a tour of European street art, tracking people who communicate messages via walls, he went on to work on the vertical limits, documenting people and life from the underground. In 2010 he completed The Wrinkles of the City – Shanghai, the second edition of the project, after Los Sucros de la Ciudad (Cartagena, Spain) in 2009, and the first to be published as a book. In The Wrinkles of the City -Shanghai JR takes his signature style and technique - plastering huge black and white portraits in the streets and on the buildings of urban environments - to a city that has experienced monumental changes over the last century, from wars and revolutions to economic development and modernization. The book offers two separate accounts of the city: an indivi-

The portraits, when placed in the urban landscape, give voice to a thousand points of view. Seen together, they provide a glimpse of the city’s history, notable especially due to the rapid rate at which it continues to change. In the same way that the city’s physical history is wiped away, its elderly inhabitants remain. For the project JR largely focused on the so called “disappearing Shanghai” district. Blocks that by now have most likely been demolished to make way to shopping malls and condos. His work puts into contrast the different experiences that constitute the urban fabric of a particular reality – one that is changing ever so fast. It is an important account that links the past with future generations, which is being told in an artistic, poetic, social, and above all, human way.

THE BOOK
WRINKLES OF THE CITY ... THE SAGA CONTINUES JR’s triumphal march through the world goes on. In his effort of creating a new way of connecting the streets with the system, JR continues to follow his unique way of shaping the world. After The Wrinkles of the City - Shanghai here comes the second chapter with The Wrinkles of The City - LA. Street Wizard, Jedi of the Photography, Jr’s new project blends in with his other global projects wich makes him the gatekeeper of street rage with a touch of decadence of the American empire. For the first time in the heart of America, in the City of the Angels, JR’s unique way of operating devastates the mecca of youth and by unoffical embassy of the American culture, conquering the streets bringing hope and love for a new era. Each one of JR's large-scale photo mural has its own history and reason in its chosen location. By taking a critic’s point of view of JR’s work one can enter a world where every action has
its meaning; one can understand who approachs one of his portraits - whether accidentally or deliberately. This time the purpose of the project was to meet people who have witnessed the changes that have occurred in the city or in their own lives. Los Angeles is the place where the Hollywood myth was born, with its stars system, the glamour and the beauty being part of the identity of the city. For this project, JR wished to oppose the wrinkles of old people living in LA and the marks of their past with the image of perfection or regenerated beauty of the XXIst century. After the mindblowing success of the first chapter here comes a collectable coffee table book and a collection of images from an artist - winner of the TED Prize in 2011 - who will be remembered in the history of photography and contemporary art.

THE BOOK
STREET KNOWLEDGE ! Iconic photographer/director Estevan Oriol releases a follow-up to his cornerstone LA Woman book: L.A. Portraits. The release of Oriol’s first published book, LA Woman (2009), caught fans and followers by surprise. Capturing the women of Los Angeles in their most confronting, gritty environments it was not the subject matter he was most well-known for. It established Estevan Oriol as the king of female street photography, cementing his reputation as Los Angeles’ most respected street photographer. LA Woman was a smash hit, selling out globally in a very short time. Portraiture of Los Angeles Volume 1 is the next compelling installment of Oriol’s work to date. This series will comprise hundreds of photos documenting the most amazing, real L.A street life the public has ever witnessed, from the lens of its originator Estevan Oriol. Dealing with sensitive environments and highly guarded subjects, Oriol has earned the
trust and respect of the streets at all levels - from taking images on set of Hollwood’s A list, to the most reclusive hoods in Los Angeles and all over the world. In commemoration of the release, the following activities will take place: a series of viral videos will be launched bringing you up close with the subject matter; Gallery shows and events will take place strategically around the world. Apart from pioneering genres of street photography, Estevan Oriol is also creating a new road map of how the normal systems of publishing have been working, inviting his fans to be a part of the process and to easily access content. Drago and SA Studios Global (SASG) - Oriol’s creative conglomerate - have entered into a partnership with the intention of revisiting the current publishing model. Recognizing the importance of digital in this new frontier, the physical is just as important.

THE BOOK
HOW THE VISUAL SUBCULTURE OF PUNK EMBODIED A DESIRE FOR A “TABULA RASA” From its inception over 35 years ago, Punk has had a great influence on art and culture, from music to literature, visual arts to fashion. Europunk serves as the catalogue for the widely acclaimed exhibition of the same name, held in 2011 at Académie de France à Rome - Villa Medici in Rome, Italy and later at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain in Geneva, Switzerland. The book focuses on the visual culture of Punk in Europe in the second half of the 1970s. Rather than telling a well rehearsed history that follows the path of musical influences, Europunk begins with the simultaneous appearance of an alternative way of creating and using images in England and France around 1975-76, in the hands of graphic designers, illustrators, image makers and agitators such as Jamie Reid, Malcolm McLaren or Bazooka (a team consisting of Olivia Clavel, Kiki Picasso, Loulou Picasso, Ti-5 Dur and Bernard Vidal). It proceeds with the images and methods that began to spread all over Europe, before the advent of New-Wave and the transfer into high-culture, with emphasis on local scenes as lively as Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Geneva, London, Manchester, Milano, Paris, Pordenone, Zürich.
Europunk gathers a vast array of visual material, some of it well known, some under-recognized: fanzines, posters, clothes, paintings, objects, record covers, flyers, films… By stressing the incredible quality and vitality of these alternative artistic productions, the book shows how the visual subculture of Punk embodied both a desire for a “tabula rasa” and a cultural renewal that were synonymous with a new energy and a principle of maximized creative freedom that has had deep political bearings and far-reaching artistic and sociological effects.
Edited by Eric de Chassey, director of the French Academy in Rome, Villa Medici and Fabrice Stroun, Director of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Geneva, the book Includes contributions on the origins of the movement in the music scene by Jon Savage - author of England's Dreaming, and Jerry Goossens - Dutch journalist.

THE BOOK
A REFINED TAKE ON HER CLASSIC NAUGHTY, MISCHIEVOUS AND MELANCHOLIC FEMALE CHARACTERS From her start as a teenager painting curvy, enticing pin-ups in the streets of Toulouse, Miss Van has widely been considered to be a pioneer in the Street-art movement. Like all great artists, however, over time she has undergone an evolution, both in terms of her subject matter and her technique. Although sultry and provocative female characters continue to be at the center of her attention, the way in which they are presented has matured thanks to the adoption of new media and subtle lighting effects. The end result is an array of more sensitive, delicate and dark works. It is evident that nowadays Miss Van focuses more on the quality of her painting and less on self-asserting herself as is the tradition in street art. In Twinkles her evolution has come full circle with a more refined style of painting that manages to never lose touch
with her street art origins. By adding layers of intrigue to her usual ingredients of coquetry and mischief, she manages to bring out all the glamour, sensuality and mystique of the female characters she has created. “At the beginnings, my dolls were self-portraits. Graffiti has a very megalomaniac side; instead of writing my name, I chose to represent myself through my dolls. I felt a real need to affirm myself, maybe because I have a twin sister and I had to show my difference. Later on, when I didn’t feel as much this need to mark my identity, my work came into its own. The idea of being provocative has always been a part of my work. I have always liked painting a sexy doll in an inappropriate place. I want to provoke strong reactions.”

THE BIBLE OF STREET ART From Style Writing to Art is the first ever street-art anthology. The book represents a comprehensive survey of the street-art movement, from its beginnings with the graffiti pioneers of the 1960s, to its extension into the art world during the 1980s, on to its increased role in popular culture today. STREET ART WITH STRONG SOCIAL UNDERTONES Under the name Elbow Toe, over the last decade Brooklyn based artist Brian Adam Douglas has been pasting his distinctive woodcuts, stencils, charcoal drawings and collages onto the walls of cities around the world. In Paper Cuts, Douglas employs the medium of ‘cut paper painting’ to dissect the bewildering act of parenthood. He explores his preconceived notions of fatherhood depicting family life as a staged performance and
animals as manifestations of human emotion. His work displays a keen awareness of the mania that strikes at the heart of parents young and old. He addresses fears, the strengthening of bonds, and the wisdom gained through the process of parenting. “I think of it as painting, and I approach it in that way, but it just so happens to be created with a non-fluid medium.” - Brian Adam Douglas

75 FULL-COLOR IMAGES FROM FORTY OF TODAY’S LEADING POP SURREALISTS Pop Surrealism movement was born in California towards the end of the seventies thanks to the creative character of the cartoonist Robert Williams. Strongly tied to the cinematic art, this movement reached its climax with Mark Ryden, Joe Sorren and Ron English and it is currently in a state of prolific expansion with new talents such as Travis Louie, Naoto Hattori, Marion Peck... It is the progress
of an accessible visual art that often suggests a lively sense of humour, sometimes pitiless and other times simply sarcastic. The artists involved in Pop Surrealism - What a Wonderfool World are Mark Ryden, Ray Caesar, Todd Schorr, Camille Rose Garcia, Shepard Fairey, Miss Van, Ron English, Joe Sorren, Gary Baseman, Tara McPherson, Scott Musgrove, Kukula, Mijn Schatje, Alex Gross, Marion Peck, Natalie Shau, Paul Chatem, Nathan Spoor, Sas Christian, Travis Louie, Jonathan Viner, Adam Wallacavage, Ken Keirns, Ahren Hertel, Kris Lewis, Tim Biskup and the Italians Nicoletta Ceccoli and Niba. The book also includes interviews with some of the most important and influential critical figures as the gallerist Jonathan LeVine and the editor at large for HiFructose magazine Kirsten Anderson.

THE BOOK
THE COMING OF AGE OF AN ENTIRE GENERATION For ten years in the 1990s New York’s Alleged Gallery provided a breeding ground for some of the most vibrant American art to come along in decades. By exhibiting then emerging talents such as Mark Gonzales, Rita Ackermann, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Harmony Korine, Mike Mills, Ed Templeton and Terry Richardson, the gallery served as an unofficial creative headquarters for some of popular culture’s most recognized figures.
Much of Alleged’s impact was due to a complete and utter disregard for the status quo. The gallery’s story serves as a poetic metaphor for the coming of age of an entire generation. Using a blend of photographs and interviews with artists, photographers, filmmakers, musicians, collectors and more, Young, Sleek, and Full of Hell documents the trials and tribulations of running an independent gallery.

THE BOOK
“ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, ANYTHING.” What happens when a respected photographer turns the camera on himself? In the case of CB Smith it inevitably leads to “sex, drugs, rock and roll, architecture and flowers.” Through the lens of his cell phone, Smith captures “a two year descent into debauchery and adventure” in what Dave Navaro describes as “gritty and unpolished.” Raw and edgy, random and yet real. The bits and pieces of images and texts found on
the pages of Phonebook each seem to have their own little story to tell, but together they offer a broader narrative of a period of time in someone’s life. Anywhere, Anytime, Anything. No filter. No stopping to think. Each image and text its own mini-drama.

‘CUT PAPER PAINTING’ THAT DISSECTS THE BEWILDERING ACT OF PARENTHOOD Under the name Elbow Toe, over the last decade Brooklyn based artist Brian Adam Douglas has been pasting his distinctive woodcuts, stencils, charcoal drawings and collages onto the walls of cities around the world. In Paper Cuts, Douglas employs the medium of ‘cut paper painting’ to dissect the bewildering act of parenthood. When I was younger I had a discipline of mastering each movement of art to a level that I felt held it’s own.
What I often find is that people want me to explain the meaning of each work. My response is to ask them what they think the work is about. I am fascinated to see what they bring to the work. —Brian Adam Douglas

HV– But now you’re working on your largest work ever, isn’t that right? BAD– Yes, I am working on my largest piece yet, 5 x 7 feet approximately. The reason for the size is I wanted an image that the show could revolve around. I also wanted the challenge. To see if I could pull it off, and if my audience has the patience to explore a work that is operating on several different levels of time. I have so much going on in this large piece that it just would have been pure insanity to compress it into a smaller space.
HV– I can see that staged quality clearly in your work and I think it contributes to the dream-like quality of your images, but it also seems to open them up and they elude easy classification. How do you find people “read” your work? Is it important to you that they see all the layers of imagery? BAD– What I often find is that people want me to explain the meaning of each work. I certainly understand that desire on their part. My response is to ask them what they think the work is about. I am fascinated to see what they bring to the work. Sometimes they hit on what I was thinking, but often they have a totally different angle, obviously informed by their own relationship to the symbols I am using. I look at these works more along the lines of poetry, where it is nice to know what the author might allude to but it isn’t necessary to enjoy the work.
HV– Do you read poetry? BAD– I do. Not as much as I would like these days. I have been getting all these reading recommendations from friends of these nice meaty novels. HV– Would you agree that your work has a literary quality? BAD– Indeed. My work is very informed by plays, poetry and novels. Unfortunately more often than not people confuse literary with literal. It has been suggested to me in the past that my work would make “real nice illustrations”. This has been a frustration for years. I studied illustration in college, and I became quite restless having to make such literal images. HV– So, you felt stigmatized for making figurative work? BAD– Back then I did. But it was more a stigma against narrative work. My way of dealing with that at the time was to follow the lead of artists like Lucien Freud and Frank Auerbach. My paintings became loaded with thick paint that at times bordered on the abstract. I dropped my focus on narrative in search of a visceral approach to grappling with the figure. This visceral quality is definitely something that has stuck with my work to this day. HV– Do you still do street art? BAD– I have not done street art on a regular basis for about a year. But it is not from a lack of wanting but rather due to the extremely long hours I execute on the paper works. I don’t have much down time for anything besides spending time with my wife. I did put up a piece six months ago, and I have another one sitting around my studio. I just don’t have the time to build out the install. I want to make this new street work more sculptural, and that would require two days of time. I continue to write on doors. HV– You mean you write poetry and thoughts on doors, correct? BAD– I do write my little poems sometimes with drawings, when time permits, or occasionally, much to my wife’s dismay, I tag. HV– Does she not understand your desire to do art in public? BAD– She does, she just hates when I tag. I understand because ultimately my tags aren’t adding much; I have the hand style of a caveman. It’s more of an ego thing. She has encouraged me to keep making the art for the street for years actually.
HV– It sounds like your newest work is integrating something new for your work, namely time. Where is that coming from? BAD– There are a couple of sources. I was always interested in Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights (1503-4) as a full unit. My mentor, Gregory Crane, would often combine several landscape paintings into one, a concept that has always fascinated me about his work. In terms of this image, the concept is about looking back on ones and the role the past plays in the present, so it fit naturally as a pictorial device. HV– It sounds like your newer work is expanding its horizons and engaging with more ambitious ideas, is that a sign of things to come? BAD– It definitely is. I think the early paper work, the portraits, were pretty much about figuring out how to manipulate the material. This series has been about bringing narrative back into the works. If anything the works will be getting more ambitious. Though that does not necessarily mean as densely packed. HV– And what’s the role of color and line in this new phase of artistic exploration? I ask this because your emphasis on line, which is particularly strong in your street work, is less central. BAD– Line is still an important aspect of the work, though not as evident. I still let it come out in my works on paper. In terms of color, due to the nature of the process it allows me to push my palette. I have also begun exploring relationships that work on a tonal value though not in a natural chromatic way. Particularly with the panel pieces, I approach them as abstractions as well as narrative pieces. This is particularly the case on the large piece I am working on now. There are times that I am using color to balance out the composition, or to be a counterpoint to something else happening in the image. I also use color as a device for subtle repetition to create structural stability.

THE BOOK
STENCIL ART FROM ROME Sten & Lex has been published for the occasion of the first official solo show of the two Roman street artists, Sten & Lex. The book and the exhibition at the CO2 gallery in Rome represent the official debut of the artists in a traditional gallery setting. The show demonstrates works of the two artists, which focuses attention on their new and innovative approach to their vision and use of the stencil technique. For
Sten & Lex the technique develops in three fundamental ways: first as a reintroduction of stencil, a method of which Sten, creator of the Hole School, was one of the Italian innovators; second as applied technically like poster or wheat paste, the preferred medium of Lex; and third as synthesized with the practice of décollage in the style of Jacques Villeglé or Mimmo Rotella.

IT’S THERE AND IN FULL FORCE Brooklyn art scene. His work has been featured in London's Apart Gallery in New York, and in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Washington. Dalek has a heritage of street art and was assistant to the Japanese artist Murakami, and from those experiences he has kept two elements: an incredible force and an unequalled precision. As he himself says laconically “it’s there and in full force...”. By now, the Space Monkeys
Dalek produced in his childhood have lived their share of history. Inspired by the cartoon series Dr. Who, the Daleks were born of an imagination developed by the very young artist. And if they seemed to some like “merciless assassins of humanity”, Dalek plays on their somewhat misanthropic instincts. But underneath it all, the Space Monkeys are “more mischievous than dangerous”.

THE VISIONARY WORLD OF JEREMY FISH In 1994 the passion for graffiti bombing led New York born artist Jeremy Fish to San Francisco. Up and down the hills, between spray painting and skate-boarding, his original style soon conquered the scene. Inspired by masters of punk-skate illustration such as Pushead and Jim Phillies, Fish revisits classical symbols of the genre in a narrative form. Visionary hybrids created by his fantasy, where ani-
mals have human appearances. But often, of the face remains just the layer underneath, the skull, ironically revisited. In 2008 Jeremy relocated for a month to a multi-ethnic neighborhood in the center of Rome. Rome-antic Delusions documents this period in which he created pieces inspired by the energetic smorgasbord of races, languages and cultures.

STYLISTIC CONSTRUCTIONS THAT ARE HARD AS A ROCK AND SHARP AS A DIAMOND Roma Omnia Vincit is the first book from Roman street artists JBRock and Diamond, friends and collaborators since 1993. The artists work both together and alone, while each has his own technique, style and perspective, their work on the street often parallels one another. For years they have invaded the capital and corrupted its walls with their
Burlesque Punk imagery, filled with debauchery and decadence and mixed with Ancient Roman icons in a way that recalls the history of the city. In its flip over style, Roma Omnia Vincit has two separate covers that can be read from on direction, with each half dedicated to the work of one of the respective artists.

THE BOOK
THE CATALOGUE OF THE FOURTH AND FIFTH EDITIONS OF THÉÂTRE DES EXPOSITIONS This flip-book, that can be leafed through from both sides, is the catalogue of the last two editions of Théâtre des Expositions, the event curated by the director of the Académie de France Éric de Chassey as an occasion for the artists and researchers in residence at Villa Medici, where the academy is settled, to confront themselves and show the result of their work. The fourth edition, curated by Ludovico Pratesi, took place last September with the title of Roma Città Aperta [Rome Open City]: the recall to the movie by Roberto Rossellini is a reference to the relation between the city and the multidisciplinary works created by the pensionnaires. Also the title of the last edition, the fifth, chosen by the curator Claudio Libero Pisano is linked to cinema: inspired by the movie of Jean-Luc Godard Deux ou trois choses que je sais d’elle [Two or Three Things I Know About Her], the project’s aim is to embody a situation in which diverse disciplines, methods, and personalities contribute to the realization of a common result.

THE BOOK
VISUAL CULTURE, ART, PAINTING The book is the catalogue of the group show, curated by Éric de Chassey at the Académie de France à Rome, from June 11 to September 14, 2014. The exhibition shows three periods in the career of four artists: the Italian Fabio Mauri, the American Marcia Hafif, the French Martin Barré and the Swiss Olivier Mosset. With their research, they embody the developments of the complex question of the
end of painting, that the artists know from the beginning of abstraction in early XX century. The process of reducing to the essential, through the intermediate passage of minimalism, led the artists on show to conceive, between 1959 and 1969, brave solutions, close to conceptual art and performance, before coming back to painting again.

THE BOOK
RIGOROUS PERSPECTIVES Jean-Marc Bustamante , Villa Medici is the catalog for the French Academy in Rome’s 2012 exhibition by the same name. Other than the famous French artist, the exhibition and catalog are also dedicated to the Dutch painter Pieter Jansz Saenredam, known most widely for his paintings of Dutch church interiors, where the acute nudity of the spaces is sharpened by the exercise of rigorous perspectives and the appearance of geometric objects.
54

58
The book explores the intuitive and tangible connections between Bustamante (1952) and Saenredam (1597-1665). Their works propose, each in its own way, a constant duality between a documentation of what can be seen by the eye and an abstract reconstruction of a place, between the distanced representation for the sake of objectivity and the aesthetic delight.

THE BOOK
ON THE THEME OF SPIRITUALITY AND ABSTRACTION La Pesanteur et La Grâce[Gravity and Grace: Abstractions and Spirituality] represents the works of five international artists, Emanuele Becheri, Callum Innes, Georges Tony Stoll, Emmanuel Van Der Meulen, and Marthe Wery, and focuses on the theme of spirituality and abstraction. “One of the most convincing schools of thought regarding the birth of abstract art is that which results in spiritual reflection and is satisfied in con-
frontation with the limits of figurative representation in the moment when one would demonstrate the transient nature of the human experience.” - Éric de Chassey, the director of the French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici. The exhibition and the catalog take their name from a collection of texts by the French philosopher Simone Weil, published in 1942

THE MEMORY OF ONE INFLUENCES THE WAY IN WHICH THE VIEWER UNDERSTANDS THE OTHER Ellsworth Kelly is one of the greatest artists alive today and Jean-AugusteDominique Ingres is one of the most well known names in 19th century French painting. Together these names create a potent mixture for art appreciation and analysis. Rather than trying to compare their styles or formal qualities, however, this book seeks to understand what links the work of

the American artist when he lived in Paris and the French painter whose work inspired academicism and many innovations in modern art. The book presents never before seen works of Ellsworth Kelly along with a selection of Ingres’ drawings and paintings. It reflects the visual juxtaposition between the artists’ respective works and the way that the memory of one influences the way in which the viewer understands the other. Moreover, it captures the connection between line and form and the duality between fragmentation and unity in both artists’ work.

THE BOOK
THE FIVE ARTISTS’ CREATIONS ARE THE CONCRETE RESULT OF THE PROCESS OF HYBRIDIZATION I Mutanti is the catalog for the Villa Medici exhibition of the same title. The catalog is made up of five volumes that correspond to the five artists participating in the show. The work of Adel Abdessemed, Stephen Dean, Ellen Gallagher, Adrian Paci, Djamel Tatah makes it clear from the outset that these artists come from complex historical backgrounds. The unifying concept among these artists lies in their approach to expressing how individual cultural identities develop as a result of migration, colonization, and post-colonial sentiments in the Western world. Above all, their creations are the concrete result of the process of hybridization.
Their works are products of mixed media and various developments, which produce multi-faceted pieces upon which the concepts of identity and multiculturalism can be reflected and interpreted on an infinite number of levels. This five-volume catalog represents the work of the some most controversial and thought-provoking artists of the 21st century. Each fifty-six-page volume can be acquired individually or together as the full collection. Each book includes a montage of over 25 full color images prepared by the respective artist and texts in three languages (French, Italian, and English) by Villa Medici director, Eric de Chassey.

FLYING CARPETS While modernist tradition maintains that the carpet was used as a paradigm for the affirmation of flatness in painting, the contrary may also be said; the flying carpet can be envisaged as a way of introducing movement in surfaces that, by using the properties of expansion and rotation, produces effects of floating, disorientation or disequilibrium. Much like the flying carpet, cinema can also involve properties or forces
aimed at bringing surfaces to life - unwinding, projecting, editing - that go beyond the simple projection of a space standardized by the norms of theatricality. Thus, the book brings together and compares real carpets and films. Carpets that, according to their function, texture or composition, produce an effect that enlivens the surfaces, and films that in this way can be reconsidered from the ornamental point of view.

THE BOOK
ITALIAN RETROSPECTIVE DEDICATED TO THE THE PAINTER SIMON HANTAÏ Six years after the artist’s death, the Italian exhibition was realized in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The exhibition at Villa Medici, divided into two sections, ran through forty works of different sizes made between 1958 and 2004, which allowed the visitor to confront an experimental language, sensitive to the Surrealist lesson and to the manipu-
lation of material. Among the works on show: some belonging to the “writing“ period; the Mariale, conserved in the Vatican Museums; other works from the series of the same name, made by Hantaï between 1960 and 1962. Some pieces from the series Pliages à usage domestique, many of which never shown before, closed the exhibition.

THE SKINHEAD WAY OF LIFE Skinstreet is a raw look into the controversial, usually demonized, world of the shaved heads. A former skinhead himself, Angelo Sindaco goes back to his past with his camera, to immortalize one of the most "esoteric" tribes of the age of globalization. It is "a
world apart", as the author describes it, hard to approach and radical in its roots. Starting with the initiate rite of shaving, boots, leather jackets and heavy tattoos complete the dress-code of the urban warriors.

THE BOOK
THE GOLDEN AGE OF NEGLECT: A CULT There are teenage smokers and drinkers. There are those whose despondence is clearly evident as they confront the camera with vacant eyes. This, quite simply put, is The Golden Age of Neglect – a classic example of Ed Templeton’s work, deeply anchored in street life. It is the vision of an artist who crossed the realms of art, sports, sex, drugs, violence and youth. A fixture of the Los Angeles skateboarding scene, Ed Templeton has been documen-
ting the real story of his life, international tours, and encounters in the skateboarding world for over 10 years. Fuelled by an incredibly raw energy, irreverence, and spontaneity, his work is comprised of an extraordinary number of photographs and canvases, as well as a body of graphic work from drawings, sketch books and collages. The book was re-printed in 2006 after its quick rise to cult-status shortly after its first printing in 2003.

THE BOOK
IMMORTALIZING THE AESTHETIC OF THE LATIN-AMERICAN WOMAN IN LOS ANGELES Estevan Oriol began taking photos in the mid 1990s when he worked as tour manager for Cypress Hill and House of Pain. While photographing life on the road, he constantly found himself photographing women. Over the years his work has focused on gang tattoos, lowrider cars and rap culture, but above all it has immortalized the ae-
sthetic of the Latin American woman in the City of Angels. With L.A. Woman, his first book, Oriol has quickly become one of the most sought after photographers in the Urban and Hip Hop community today. The book presents a collection of woman’s photos he has taken throughout the years – all shot on film.

THE BOOK
THE STREET COMES TO THE GALLERY City Slang is a companion book to the exhibition: City Slang: The Street Comes to the Gallery which was on view at Rome's leading Urban Art gallery, Dorothy Cirus, in January and February 2008. The exhibition was a showcase for art launched directly from the heart of the street into the institutional space of the art gallery. Koralie, Supakitch, StenLex-Lucamaleonte, JBRock and Diamond, Mr.. Wany + Ale! TvBoy, and
Gar Crew's work flooded the exhibition space with a rainbow of stencils, posters and graffiti. A perfect rendez-vous, where the marginal meets and conquere the main stream. This cultural petri dish gave rise to a new aesthetic and urban rebirth. The Italian Renaissance starts here: with this exhibition, these artists and this book. Drago brought the experience to a full circle by publishing City Slang.

The Street Comes To The Gallery

★ Koralie draws her inspiration from Kakemono, silk scrolls containing verses of Zen philosophy, weaving her personal concept of street art with the artistic wisdom of the Japanese people. Her works form a bridge between western culture and Ukiyo-e, literally “pictures of the floating world”. Dating from the 17th Century, Ukiyo-e is a poster art closely connected with the pleasures of theatres, restaurants, teahouses, geisha and courtesans. Pure poetry and refinement are the focal points of Koralie’s work. This is reflected in the small details, not unlike oriental art, the creation of a poster, on cloth and with plastic elements, finely decorated with unexpected brush strokes, destabilizing elements in Art Nouveau frames strongly reaffirms the emergence of a new generation, mindful of past artistic movements. The delicate figures that appear in every composition float in a candid and minimal universe, silent and ethereal geishas.
