THE STREET IS WATCHING WHERE STREET KNOWLEDGE MEETS PHOTOGRAPHY AAVV
VECCHIA SCUOLA GRAFFITI WRITING A MILANO MARCO KAYONE MANTOVANI
The Street is Watching is a street photography anthology that brings together the most representative and iconic images, ranging from the ‘70s to today, that shows the evolution and the spirit of street and urban photography through the vision of both masters and young generations of photographers as well. The book showcases the work of artists who inspire and provoke, whose point of view awakens us to a System of Independent Culture that defines the Drago aesthetic. Curated by Drago publisher Paulo Lucas von Vacano, the volume also features a text by Miss Rosen, New York-based photo editor and photography book specialist.
Vecchia Scuola recounts the birth of Graffiti Writing in Milan between 1980 and the early ‘90s, as seen through the eyes of the protagonists. It was in these years that the culture of Hip Hop and Graffiti Writing spread to Italy, laying the foundation for the development of a prominent national phenomenon that is now ingrained in every Italian city. These pioneering artists guide us in a photographic journey and tell stories of emotions, friendships and rivalries. Above all, they exhibit their creativity, originality and research, inspired by the American and European giants that preceded them. By publishing the works of the artists that started writing in those years, we hope to pay tribute to this culture and its development. This book is dedicated to those who have made the history of Graffiti Writing Milanese.
The photographers included in the book are more than 100. The book features the work of Larry Clark, Boogie, Ed Templeton, Glen E. Friedman, JR, Estevan Oriol, Martha Cooper, Pieter Hugo, Jamel Shabazz, Bruce Davidson, Jim Goldberg, Mary Ellen Mark, Bruce Gilden, Ryan McGinley, Hugh Holland, Jill Freedman, C.R. Born in Milan in 1972, KayOne lives and works in Milan. He is a writer, artist and creative that began painting in 1988 at the age of 15. He was a pioneer of graffiti writing in Milan at a time when the form only appeared in a small number of American TV shows and such trends tended to take several years to cross the ocean. Today, aged 45, he divides his time between painting, decorating the walls of the city and organising and participating in numerous artistic events throughout Italy and abroad.

THE NIGHT DAY A STORY ABOUT THE OTHER SIDE KEFFER
ART FROM THE STREETS MAGDA DANYSZ
Night, a place inhabited by an unknown wildlife. A mixture that is found nowhere. Often hidden underground, emerging rarely during the day, peoples are living against time and against a system, for a life time or some hours. A world inside another world. Some come to work, others for fun, the night is fast, while little change overnight, people leave, come back, hide, change their appearance. Featuring artists like Diplo, Daniel Avery, Brodinsky, Asap Rocky, Die Antwoord, Gesaffelstein, Travis Scott, Green Velvet, The Night Day is an almost instant snapshot of that life without the sun, years of reporting on people who make and remake the night in Paris and everywhere Keffer goes. The stars, the unknown, the opportunist, the organizers, the enthusiasts, the artists. Some left, others have not even arrived yet, the book presents the incredible diversity of this world, this universe, that few know. All those ten incredible years are compiled by Keffer and Drago into the first volume of the Night Day book.
Art from the Streets presents the world’s most iconic street artists for the first time in Southeast Asia. Tracing 40 years of Street Art, the walls of ArtScience Museum located at the iconic Marina Bay Singapore will be invaded for a period of five months. The exhibition catalog by curator and street art expert Magda Danysz introduces the reader to the most important street artists worldwide and gives an overview to the most important styles and techniques used in the art form. With her own gallery having operated between Shanghai, London and Paris for the last decade, Danysz uses her expertise to also shine a spotlight on urban art in Southeast Asia for the first time. In addition, the catalog will present exciting new talents such as Felipe Pantone whose work is also featured on the book cover. Furthermore, new works created especially for the show and featured in the book will illustrate the vitality and diversity of the movement and its relevance today.
Keffer is a photographer working instinctively, he manages to catch night-time atmosphere, moving us through Lynchian settings, through closed-down places where Hitchcock could have shot or through urban landscapes where the world, deprived from light appears to us from a brand-new side. He has been named “one of the greatest street photographers right now” by Complex Magazine.

CROSS THE STREETS CONCEPT BY PAULO LUCAS VON VACANO
DECADES 5 ARTISTS FOR 5 DECADES OF POP CULTURE AAVV
There is only one international vanguard that brings together the young, the marginalised and the minorities in the amniotic sac of globalization: Street Art. Cross the Streets is a multimedia exhibition that historicizes the street art phenomenon, the most globally influential art movement of the last 40 years. For the first time in Rome, a counterculture—by now part of the mainstream—enters a museum, the MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome. No other city has such an untouched history and so it is fitting that Rome begins its cultural regeneration from its streets and its past. The project was inspired by Paulo Lucas von Vacano’s research on Street counterculture and all of its derivatives. As he explains in the exhibition catalog, “the street watches and the street governs [...] The revolution occurs when the street enters the museum and the museum becomes the street. Those who survive the streets, rule the world!”
Five artists – five decades of pop culture! Some of the most talented Roman Street Artists (Solo, Diamond, Riccardo Beetroot, Luis Gomez and Lucamaleonte) will reinterpret the second half of the twentieth century, according to their own styles and perspectives: each will represent a decade, passing through costumes and sociopolitical events significant to that half-century.
The exhibition catalog with it’s 240 colored pages documents this extraordinary event that involved the biggest names of international Street Art such as, Shepard Fairey AKA Obey the Giant, WK, Chaz Bojorquez, DAIM, Evol, Invader, Swoon, Mike Giant, to name a few. A seperate section relates to the 40 years of graffiti history in Rome’s metro, with interviews and original material presented by key players Why Style, TRV and many others.
ISBN: 978-88-98565-28-3 € 25.00 - $ 25.00 - £ 25.00 Street Art Languages: IT 17 x 24 cm / 6,5 x 9,5 in 128 Pages - 88 Photos Softcover Publication: September 2017
Five decades are backed by Riccardo Beetroot’s bas-reliefs, representing the realities of the Roman townships in the 1950s, followed by the merging of Solo with the liberty of Diamond: the duet of their canvases reminiscent of iconic sociopolitical events of the ’60s and’ 70. The following decade, however, is stigmatized by Lucamaleonte’s strict incisor techniques, while Luis Gomez will conclude the exposition, interpreting a chiaroscuro of the ’90s through musical suggestions that characterized his adolescence. Each artist will also produce a series of quality gadgets and limited-edition graphics inspired both by the concept and works of the exhibition. An extraordinary point of interest will be the huge 40-foot murals made cooperatively by the five artists who will be taking over the exhibition for the duration of the show.

IO SONO PERSONA AAVV
THE HANDS OF THE CITY CLAUDIA PAJEVSKI
“They call them migrants, nobody wants them,” writes Francesco Radino in text presenting his images for this show, and continues with a question that all of us have in common: “But what Europe is this that after having taken the monopoly to take her empires today rejects to address the poisonous consequences of her actions? They try to stop the wind with their hands as an unstoppable human beings knocks at the door of our conscience, preventing us from looking away.” The postulations by one of the most prominent Italian photographers are certainly shared by all those who wanted to participate in this collective initiative which marks the inauguration of the International Photography Center in Palermo. For each of them migration is something personal. For each of them to tackle the issue of migration is a civil and ethical commitment from which they can not and do not want to escape.
The hands of the city project was born in L’Aquila, a city immobile and silent for years, condemned to this fate by an earthquake and a horrible political spell. Then, all of a sudden, almost two years ago reconstruction began; the cranes arrived, a great many in fact, to act as go-between for the city and sky. But a city doesn’t build itself, it is rebuilt; by thousands of people, thousands of hands. Those that Pajewski calls, for that reason, “Le mani della città”. The hands, the intense gazes marked by the profound darkness of the interiors and the courtyards to rebuild; the faces illuminated by the clear and limpid light tipical of the city and of Claudia’s photos, faces that willingly interact with the camera, direct and shy of time; the bundled up bodies with helmets pressed hard to their heads, framed by the infinite and rigid shapes of the innocent tubes. A city and those men who, in large part, are not even natives of it..
Drago presents the catalog of the exhibition “Io sono Persona” at the International Photography Center, Palermo, strongly wanted by Letizia Battaglia, opening to the city as a cultural center ready to host artistic events of different kinds. The exhibition is curated by Giovanna Calvenzi, Kitti Bolognesi and Marta Posani.

CONCRETE ARCHIVE STEFANO CANTO
ANTHOLOGY LETIZIA BATTAGLIA
The title of the exhibition, Concrete Archive, describes a resistance to the ephemeral character of the present and reinforces the idea of stability and durability of our past. The image of a cement archive, on one hand proposes a reflection on the notions of archiving, documenting and the recording of the human’s actions, whilst on the other it exemplifies Canto’s interest in the architectural approach.
Letizia Battaglia (Palermo, 1935) is a Sicilian photographer and photojournalist. Although her photos document a wide spectrum of Sicilian life, she is best known for her work on the Mafia. Over the years, Battaglia took some 600,000 images whilst documenting the ferocious internal war of the Mafia, and its assault on civil society. Battaglia sometimes found herself at the scene of four or five different murders in a single day. She photographed the dead so often that she described herself as a moving morgue. A large selection of her iconic black and white images will be presented in the catalogue.

JUNGLE L’IMMAGINARIO ANIMALE NELLA MODA AAVV
PER PURA PASSIONE LETIZIA BATTAGLIA
The institutionalisation of spotted patterns in designer fashion is something that characterises the modern era. Modern fashion as inaugurated by haute couture, was bound to take an interest in the animal coat. Out of the Jungle, The animal imaginary in Fashion is the first exhibition dedicated to this topic. It explores the evolution of the coat in its various animal forms, ever since Christian Dior infused his clothing lines with animal prints. The animal imaginary in Fashion is the catalog of the exhibition that opens at La Venaria Reale, in Turin.
The book explores the incredible scope and character of Letizia Battaglia’s work. The photographs included capture an intimate insight into the ambivalence of Italian life, from harrowing images of the Mafia to beautiful portraits of the women and children of Palermo. Per pura passione further explores Battaglia’s social commitment from her political activism in Milan to her volunteer work for a psychiatric hospital in Palermo. Contributors includes the mayor of Palermo and the Anti-Mafia Magistrate.

Known as one of the most influential photographers of street culture in the new millennium, Boogie emerges once again to spark our curiosity and narrate authentic stories in his own raw style. A Wah Do Dem, Boogie’s sixth monograph, and his first one in color, takes us far away from the familiarity of the West, and throws us into the noisy and cryptic underbelly of Kingston, Jamaica. Through his pictures, Boogie illustrates both the madness and humanity of a complex place, where poverty, violence and crime are often dominant elements of daily life.

THE WRINKLES OF THE CITY: SHANGHAI JR
ROME WASN’T DRAWN IN A DAY COLORING BOOK DOLCE Q
JR starts by doing portraits of elderly people who represent the memory of the city he picks for its interesting past. JR interviewed each subject of his pieces, because he considers them as a sort of witnesses of the changes their city has gone through. The book documents the French artist’s work in 2010 photographing Shanghai’s elderly inhabitants, plastering their portraits on the city streets and buildings, and finally, recounting their personal memories and views on society. An important account that links the past with future generations, told in an artistic, poetic, social, and above all, human way.
Beautifully illustrated, Rome Wasn’t Drawn in a Day is filled with templates for exquisite scenes and intricate and sophisticated patterns. All the magnificence of ancient Rome is prompting you to meditate on your artwork as you mindfully and creatively fill these pages with color. Take a few minutes out of your day, wherever you are, and color your way to peace. A perfect gift from your journey in the Eternal City or a souvenir to keep with you a wonderful memory.

TWINKLES MISS VAN
STEN & LEX STEN & LEX
Miss Van has gone from painting the curvy, enticing pin-ups in the streets of Toulouse, to painting the melancholic and subtle works of this new exhibition. Thanks to her past year exhibitions in Barcelona Los Angeles, San Diego, Mexico, London or Copenhagen, she has found many new sources of inspiration, whom have enriched her already complex world. With this new series she has undergone a beautiful evolution towards a more mature and refined style of painting, but without ever losing touch with her street art origins.
The release of street artists Sten & Lex’s new monograph coincides with their first official solo show at the CO2 gallery in Rome. The Roman duo started working together in 2000 and have since pioneered several revolutionary stencil techniques that are showcased in this book. Also included are a number of insightful critical texts by Maria Letizia Bixio, Davide Giannella and Gianluca Marziani and an introduction by gallery owner and curator Giorgio Galotti.

FROM STYLE WRITING TO ART MAGDA DANYSZ
ROMA OMNIA VINCIT JBROCK & DIAMOND
The first Street Art anthology ever published explore the reasons why style writing is turning out to be the major art movement at this turn of the century. From graffiti pioneers in the ‘60s, to how street art branched into the art world during the ’80s, to whatever new issues and practices have emerged since the ‘90s. Each period is complete with 2-3 page biographies for each considered artist, covering their beginnings, their artistic career, along with a personal style review, as well as an artwork analysis section. Overall, the book offers 50 complete biographies of top street artists.
The first book by JBRock and Diamond bears two distinctive covers celebrating each artist whilst creating a single space where the friends and collaborators can bring their unique iconography together. They masterfully juxtapose their works with the architecture that defines Rome in a beautiful fusion between old and new, eternal and ephemeral. Whilst both artists choose to focus their fascination on voluptuous images of women, the two differ in their execution. Whilst their styles may differ, both names are equally synonymous with the streets of Rome. Their impact is as hard as rock and as sharp as diamond.
