The Wrinkles of the City Los Angeles by JR

– CARL VIRDEN – My name is Carl Virden. I am 63 years old, but I feel younger. I was a carpenter for thirty-two years, with the Carpenter’s Unions, and I worked on several buildings all over L.A. and around.

When I retired, I got bored really quickly. I saw an advertisement for background acting so I answered the ad and joined a casting service. I got an audition within a week, and received the first part I auditioned for. I had a great time doing it, so I went on to do other background work.

I ended up landing a principal role in South Carolina to play Thomas Clemson in a video promoting the university; it was a lot of fun!

I always wanted to leave a part of myself for my kids and grand kids. I didn’t know how to leave something, now that I’m retired, other than film. Now, I have that opportunity and I appreciate that they will be able to see that I did something and left a mark. When I work in construction, I like to leave a mark on secret places. My team and I once scratched our names on the ball on top of a fifty foot tall flagpole, which was on the roof of a thirteen-floor building. It’s hidden now, but maybe one or two hundred years from now they will tear down the building and see that we were there.

My wrinkles represent time spent working, but more so time spent working for my family. They also represent aging: I remember looking down at my own, wrinkled hands one day and thinking, “Those are my Dad’s hands!

I’m becoming my Dad!” That’s when I realized I was getting older.

Mi nombre es Carl Virden. Tengo 63 años pero me siento mucho mas joven. Era un carpintero por treinta y dos años, trabajaba por la Carpinter’s Unions, trabaje en muchos edificios en Los Ángeles.

Cuando me jubile me aburrí muy rápido. Un día vi una publicidad para actuar en background, me apunte’ y empecé a trabajar con el casting.

Tuve una audición en la semana y me escogieron para hacer la primera parte. Fue una experiencia muy divertida así que empecé a actuar en otros tipos de actuación. Acabe’ encontrando un trabajo donde tenia que representar Thomas Clemson como actor principal en South California que promueve la universidad. Fue un trabajo muy divertido.

Siempre he querido dejar algo de mi a mis hijos y a mis nietos. No se lo que les puedo dejar ahora que ya estoy jubilado, aparte de los Films que estuve haciendo. Ahora que tengo esta oportunidad estoy feliz de hacer Films y de poder dejarles algo que representa lo que yo hice de mi vida. Cuando trabajo en construcciones me gusta dejar una marca de mi, usualmente en lugares secretos. Una vez trabajando en las construcciones, mis colegas y yo escribimos nuestros nombres en la bola del palo de la bandera que pusimos en piso 13 de un edificio. Ahora nuestros nombres están escondidos pero quién sabe en cien años tienen que destruir el edifico y encontrarán nuestra marca que dejamos y sabrán que nosotros estuvimos allí.

Mis arrugas representan los años que estuve trabajando, pero representan mas lo que estuve trabajando por mi familia. Estas mismas (mis arrugas) representan mas que nada el envejecimiento!: recuerdo una vez mirar para abajo a mis manos y pensar, “esas son las manos de mi padre, me estoy volviendo como mi padre!”. En ese momento entendí que estaba envejeciendo.

– GEORGE COCKFIELD – My name is George Cockfield. I’m 58 years old. I moved to Los Angeles in the 1980’s. I had everything– a nice home, a car, a job, everything. In 1990, a man broke into my home to rob me and he hit me with a gun— I lost my eye and broke my leg. I was starting my own business and didn’t have medical insurance, so I lost it all and became homeless.

My mission in life is to return the positive energy back into life. Because there are so many negatives happening and we need to balance back; the universe depends on it. My heavy meditation has been a great tool for that. Ten years ago in L.A, I mean especially downtown, it was terrible, you couldn’t walk the streets like you do now. I’ve seen so many people kill and get killed and so many people get hurt. It’s come a long way, but there’s a long way to go.

When I was doing OK, driving my car I would see unfortunate people. I would always think, “why do some people have easy lives, while others are always struggling?” Meditation taught me that I could help people but that it wasn’t my responsibility to wonder about why things were like that. And then I also realized I was only seeing the physical aspect of their lives, not the mental. It hit me, “You don’t know what that person is feeling. Who knows if he’s not happier than you are!” Now, when I walk down the street people are drawn to me because of my positive energy; they respect me.

Once, I was meditating and I heard a voice say, “Do you know why you lost an eye? Because now you have one eye to see outside and the other to see inside.”

Mi nombre es George Cockfield. Tengo 58 años de edad. Me mudé a Los Ángeles en la década de 1980. Lo tenía todo: una buena casa, un coche, un trabajo, todo. En 1990, un hombre entró en mi casa para robarme y me golpeó con una pistola-Perdí mi ojo y me rompí la pierna.

Yo estaba empezando mi propio negocio y no tiene seguro médico, así que perdí todo y me quedé sin hogar.

Mi misión en la vida es volver a tener energía positiva en la vida. Debido a que hay tantas cosas negativas que suceden y tenemos que equilibrar todo de nuevo, el universo depende de ello. Mi meditación ha sido una gran herramienta para eso. Hace diez años, en Los Ángeles, me refiero sobre todo en el centro, que era terrible, no podías caminar por las calles como lo haces ahora. He visto a tanta gente matar y tanta gente hacerse daño. Ha recorrido un largo camino, pero hay un largo camino por recorrer.

Cuando estaba bien, conduciendo mi coche, solía ver a gente desafortunada. Yo siempre pienso, "¿por qué algunas personas tienen una vida fácil, mientras que otras están siempre luchando?" La meditación me enseñó que yo podía ayudar a la gente, pero que no era mi responsabilidad preguntarse por qué las cosas eran así. Y luego también me di cuenta que estaba viendo sólo el aspecto físico de su vida, no lo mental.

Me di cuenta, "Tu no sabes lo que esa persona está sintiendo. ¿Quién sabe si no es más feliz que tú!” Ahora, cuando voy por la calle, la gente se siente atraída por mí a causa de mi energía positiva, me respetan.

Una vez, yo estaba meditando, y oí una voz que decía: "¿Sabes por qué perdiste un ojo? Porque ahora tienes un ojo para ver afuera y el otro para ver al interior. "

– JOHN STAPP – My name is John Stapp and I’m 58-59 years old, I forget. I started acting a good 10 years ago. I’m really a graphic artist, but I was laid off of my job and I fell in this line of work. Or it fell into my laps, one of the two.

Every working day is a new challenge, every single job I go to is different and I love it. One day I’m in a Western and the next I’m a homeless man.

Since I let my beard grow out and my hair grow out, people walk around me on the street, I get strange looks from people. Women will hold their purses a little bit tighter when I walk by. But, it does have its good sides.

Little kids think I’m Santa Clause.

The wrinkles I have are earned. They come with age and hopefully, with age comes wisdom. I can walk around, here in the city of LA and see beautiful architecture. It doesn’t have wrinkles like I do, but its old and I can appreciate all the time in history that went into building these structures.

Mi nombre es John Stapp, tengo 58-59 años de edad, se me olvida.

Empecé a actuar unos buenos 10 años atrás. Soy un artista gráfico, pero me despidieron de mi trabajo y me quedé en esta línea de trabajo.

O que cayó en mis vueltas, uno de los dos. Cada día de trabajo es un nuevo reto, cada trabajo que voy a es diferente y me encanta. Un día estoy en una película del oeste y el siguiente soy un hombre sin hogar.

Desde que dejé que mi cabello y barba creciera, la gente camina alrededor de mí en la calle y me parece que todos me miran diferente. Las mujeres mantienen sus carteras un poco más apretadas si les camino cerca. Sin embargo, tiene sus lados buenos. Los niños pequeños piensan que soy Santa Claus.

Las arrugas que tengo se obtienen. Ellas vienen con la edad y espero que con la edad viene la sabiduría. Puedo caminar alrededor, aquí en la ciudad de Los Ángeles y ver una hermosa arquitectura. No tiene arrugas como yo, pero su edad me hace entender de todo el tiempo en la historia que pasó en la construcción de estas estructuras.
