Ellen Gallagher was born in Providence, Rhode Island and currently lives and works between
New York and Rotterdam, Holland. Repetition, revision, and repurposing are essential to
Gallagher’s work and the creation of narratives in her paintings.
The characters that she appropriates from commercial advertisements and their visual language
are reconfigured and redefined by Gallagher’s special manipulation and personal
iconography, which produces work that produces a visual map of modern cultural hybridism.
