A SCUOLA CON STEN&LEX | AT SCHOOL WITH STEN AND LEX – Giorgio Galotti –

September 17th, 1990 It was 8:30 when I entered the classroom of Vittorio Alfieri Middle School, Section B, for the first time. There were many new faces that I didn’t recognize, besides those few that I had brought with me from elementary school. Fully dressed with my G.I.JOE folder rigid, I sat at the second to last bench, middle row. The last was considered a presage for those who wanted, at any cost, to be the Italian teacher’s pet. Behind me was a timid, crouching boy, who maybe still hadn’t realized the danger of his position. “Ciao” I said. He replied “Ciao” and nothing else. At that moment, I realized that someone else would probably stand out more than I, only at at riskier seat than mine. Instead I was wrong, my red hair caught the attention of the teacher on the first day, but that’s another story.

September 20th, 1993 8:30am. New bell, new school. I timidly crossed the threshold of Classico Torquato Tasso High School. Section F. I entered class becoming even more apprehensive. I turned around. No familiar faces, or just barely. Three of my friends from middle school were still with me. Unfotunately, I was late and the only two seats left were on the last bench.

I sat in the seat on the row to the left, below a big window.

The seats in the middle row were already taken by one eternal proprietor and a girl I’d never seen before. I greeted the boy as in middle school, but with more emphasis: “Ciao D.” “Ciao Giorgio,” he responded, “This is V. She’s my friend...”

“Nice to meet you,” I told them. Later I asked myself if they had also been late or if their seats, hidden in the middle row, would be the place that they wanted to sit in for life. Right away I had noted a certain affinity between the two.

July 8th, 1996 Tasso High School. The terror of test results. It was the time to meet up with friends and make trouble, to take turns teasing the nerds and go on vacation. Not this year. Under the doorway the happy faces of my peers that hadn’t yet crossed my gaze morphed into Charon, ready to put coins onto my eyelids and pull the oar of the boat carrying my body to afterlife. At the announcement of grades I had many, too many, failing grades to pass to the next level. I turned and next to me were D. and V. in hoods, giving a serene glance at the board, turning around, and leaving. The ones that sat in the center row were experiencing my same destiny at the moment. We exchanged a pat on the back.

“See you soon.” “Ciao Giorgio,” they responded in unison.

17 settembre 1990 Erano le 8.30 quando entrai per la prima volta nell’aula della scuola media Vittorio Alfieri, sezione B. Tanti volti nuovi che non riconoscevo, a parte i pochi che mi ero portato dietro dalla scuola elementare. Vestito di tutto punto con la mia cartella rigida dei G.I.JOE, mi sedetti al penultimo banco, fila centrale. L’ultimo lo reputavo un presagio per colui che voleva a tutti costi essere preso di mira dalla professoressa di Italiano. Dietro di me un ragazzo, timido e accovacciato, che forse ancora non si era reso conto della pericolosità di quel posto. “Ciao” gli dissi. Lui rispose “Ciao” e null’altro. Da quel momento capii che probabilmente qualcuno sarebbe stato più riconoscibile di me, solo per una sistemazione più rischiosa della mia. Invece mi sbagliavo, i miei capelli rossi avevano smosso l’attenzione della professoressa già il primo giorno, ma questa è un’altra storia.

20 settembre 1993 Ore 8.30. Nuova campanella, nuova scuola. Varcai timoroso la soglia del Liceo Classico Torquato Tasso. Sezione F. Entrai in classe con fare ancora più sospetto. Mi girai intorno. Nessuna faccia conosciuta, o quasi. Tre miei amici delle medie erano ancora con me. Purtroppo avevo fatto tardi e tra i posti disponibili solo due agli ultimi banchi. Mi sedetti in quello della fila di sinistra, sotto ad una grande finestra. Quello della fila centrale era già occupato dal suo eterno proprietario e da una ragazza mai vista prima. Lo salutai come alle medie ma con maggiore trasporto per via degli anni: “Ciao D.”, “Ciao Giorgio” rispose, “Ti presento V. è una mia amica”….”Piacere” le dissi. Ancora una volta mi domandai se anche loro avevano fatto tardi o se quel posto nascosto in fila centrale sarebbe stato il posto che avrebbero voluto occupare nella vita. Da subito notai una certa affinità tra i due.

8 luglio 1996 Liceo Tasso. Il terrore dei quadri. E’ il momento in cui ci si rincontra con i compagni per fare casino, sfottere il secchione di turno e andarsene in vacanza. Non quell’anno.

Sulla soglia le facce felici dei miei compagni che non appena incrociarono il mio sguardo vidi le loro sembianze tramutarsi in quelle di Caronte, pronti a sistemarmi due monete sulle palpebre e a dare la spinta alla zattera che trasporta il mio corpo nell’aldilà. Alla lettura dei voti, tanti, troppi voti in rosso per passare in secondo liceo. Mi giro e accanto a me loro, D. e V. sereni rivolsero uno sguardo alla bacheca incappucciati, si rigirarono e se ne andarono. Coloro che

stavano nella fila centrale stavano vivendo il mio stesso destino nel medesimo istante. Ci scambiammo una pacca sulla spalla. “A presto”. “Ciao Giorgio” sentii rispondere all’unisono. Da quella risposta avevo percepito che il loro stato d’animo non era sconvolto, avevano altro a cui pensare, non so a cosa, ma invidiavo questa forza a due.

Da allora non li incrociai più. Ma dopo poco tempo iniziai a vedere per le strade, le pareti e i palazzi del mio quartiere, una serie di volti anni ’60 realizzati a pixel neri con due scritte accanto: Lex –sten-. Non sapevo cosa volessero dire, ma erano estremamente belli. Li reputavo il primo vero intervento a spray che non intaccava minimamente l’arredo urbano, anzi lo abbelliva a tal punto da iniziare a sollecitare in me un desiderio recondito: chiedere a chiunque si fermasse di fronte a questi “graffiti” chi ne fosse l’autore.

Tutto si ricongiunse un giorno in cui uno di questi volti comparì sul muro della mia vecchia scuola. E proprio nel momento in cui passavo lì di fronte un mio vecchio compagno era intento ad ammirarlo. Senza neanche salutarlo o chiedergli come stava dopo tanto tempo, ebbi un’unica domanda: “Li conosci?”. “Chi?” mi rispose. “Loro questi Lex –sten-, li conosci?”. “Si” mi disse. “E li conosci pure tu”. Mi mostrò una foto su una rivista. Ritraeva un ragazzo in tuta con il volto incappucciato e accanto una ragazza di spalle con un maglione a righe. Ancora una volta quel posto nascosto, ultimo banco/fila centrale, ritornava sotto forma di immagine.

12 marzo 2010 Ore 18.30, galleria CO2. Signore e Signori (Ladies and Gentlemen), ho l’onore di presentarvi (i have the honor to introduce you), –sten- “the Legend” and Lex “the Queen” intenti nella costruzione del loro sogno, pronti ad affrontare una nuova vita, come una coppia che si perde per anni e al primo incontro si attrae, si avvinghia, si volta e scompare per sempre. Buono spettacolo!

From their reply I perceived that they weren’t in the same state of shock. They were thinking of something else, I didn’t know what, and I envied the strength of these two.

From that day on our paths no longer crossed. However after some time I began to see a series of faces from the sixties rendered with black pixels, signed Lex -sten-, on the street, the walls and the buildings of my neighborhood. I didn’t know what it meant, but it was extremely beautiful. I considered it the first real graffitti work that didn’t somewhat undermine the urban landscape, but rather embellished it, eliciting in me a hidden desire: to ask anyone who stopped in front of the “graffitti” if he or she was the artist.

Everything came together one day when one of these faces appeared on a wall of my old school. In the same moment that I passed by it, one of my old schoolmates was there, intently admiring the work. Without even saying hi or asking how he was after all this time, I had only one question: “Do you know them?” “Who?” he replied. “These here Lex and -sten-, do you know them?” “Yes,” he said, “and you know them, too.” He showed me a photo from a magazine.

It depicted a boy in overalls with a hooded face and next to him a girl wearing a striped sweater. Another time in that hidden place, the last bench, middle row, the memory came back to me in the form of an image.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have the honor of presenting to you, -sten-, “The Legend”, and Lex, “The Queen”, intent on the construction of their dream, ready to confront a new life, as a couple that is lost for years and on first encounter attracts, clings, turns, and disappears forever. QUOTIDIANI EQUILIBRI | DAILY BALANCE – Davide Giannella –

Sgomberiamo l’orizzonte da ogni possibile dubbio o fraintendimento. Accantoniamo definitivamente le consuete riflessioni ed i soliti riferimenti al sociale, al disagio giovanile, a mondi notturni ed underground che per anni sono stati strumenti giustificatori nella lettura di tutte le espressioni artistiche nate in ambito urbano ed approdate di merito all’interno di canali e contesti istituzionali. Il piano su cui porre e leggere le opere di -sten- e Lex è, deve essere, unicamente quello artistico, perché è in questo ambito che i due autori romani si muovono ed è secondo logiche personali e non di movimento che la loro ricerca si sviluppa.

E’ partendo da questo presupposto quindi che sarà possibile fruire del loro operato cogliendone poetica e tecniche originali.

Quotidianamente entriamo in contatto con lo straordinario, con immagini -se ancora non hanno raggiunto lo status di icone- fortemente connotate e rappresentative. Quelli che ci vengono offerti sono immaginari iperbolici, che si tratti di modelli virtuosi a cui aspirare o di derive decadenti e negative utili a confermare la nostra estraneità da determinati mondi. Come se non bastasse, tutto ciò che poteva sembrare innovativo, extra ordinario o alternativo rispetto ai clichè di massa, è stato definitivamente appiattito o addomesticato.

Ciò che stupisce invece è come sempre di più vi sia timore della normalità e del quotidiano, facendo risultare indigeribili o quantomeno esotiche le esperienze e le emozioni comuni, quelle più assimilabili alle nostre. Questo strano timore dell’ordinario, assieme ad una esaltazione delle figure semplici e di una sottile neo diversità, è probabilmente alla base della ricerca iconografica di -sten- e Lex. Figure neutre, calme, in bianco e nero, mutuate da album fotografici degli anni Sessanta e Settanta, sono gli elementi che animano il paesaggio umano in mostra, personaggi anonimi e quindi veicoli di storie aperte all’interpretazione del pubblico, chiamato a dare una definizione personale, una lettura filtrata attraverso la propria esperienza e la propria sensibilità.

Inevitabile quindi il cortocircuito che si viene a creare tra la piattezza e l’anonimato dell’immagine interna alle opere ed il formato in cui esse vengono realizzate, colto e percepito abitualmente come il più adatto alla rappresentazione e alla veicolazione di messaggi chiari, finiti e puntuali.

Il conflitto tra la tipologia delle immagini utilizzate e la loro scala di realizzazione, viene coerentemente declinato e tradotto anche dal punto di vista tecnico. Se lo stencil infatti, sia come strumento a fini industriali e civili sia nelle sue più rassicuranti e recenti declinazioni domestiche ed artis-

Let’s clear the view of any possible doubt or misunderstanding. Let’s, for good, set aside our usual remarks and our usual references to society, to juvenile discomfort, to nocturnal and underground worlds which for years have been tools to justify the interpretation of all artistic movements born in urban environments and which have rightly come to reach institutional spheres. The key to read and interpret the artwork of -sten- and Lex is, and must be, uniquely artistic.

Because this is the context in which these two artists from Rome move and because it’s according to personal logic and not according to the logic of movement that their research develops. Only considering this premise can we enjoy their work and grasp its poetic value and original technique.

Everyday come into contact with the extraordinary, with images -if they haven’t yet reached the status of iconswhich are strongly connotative and representative. Whether we are talking about virtuous models to aspire to or negative and decadent drifts which confirm our being strangers to certain worlds, those which we are constantly offered are hyperbolic imageries. Moreover, everything that seemed innovative, extraordinary or alternative in comparison to the mass clichés has been definitely tamed or flattened. What amazes, on the other hand, is the growing fear of normality and of the day-to-day life which turns common experiences and emotions, those which are more similar to our own, into something that is considered exotic or as hard to digest.

This strange fear for what is ordinary together with an exaltation of simple figures and a subtle neo-diversity is probably the base of -sten- and Lex’s iconographic research.

Neutral, calm, black and white figures borrowed from photo albums from the sixties and seventies enliven the exhibited human landscape. Anonymous characters carrying stories which are open to interpretation by an audience summoned to give a personal view filtered through its own experiences and sensibility.

This gives birth to an inevitable short circuit between the flatness and the anonymity of the image within the artworks and the format in which they are realized, which is usually perceived as the best to represent and convey clear, punctual, and straight-forward messages.

This conflict between the type of images used and their scale of realization is coherently declined and translated in a technical point of view. Stencils, as a matter of fact, have always been used -both in industrial and civil interventions and, more recently, in more reassuring domestic and artistic

tiche, è da sempre utilizzato per la produzione seriale di immagini, -sten- e Lex ne annullano ogni funzionalità, esaltando il lavoro manuale dietro alla creazione di ogni singola matrice e sottolineandone il valore assoluto come opera unica. Normalmente le matrici verrebbero ricavate intagliando fogli in PVC o cartone, in modo da poter sostenere numerosi passaggi di vernice e in maniera tale da essere utilizzate anche in strada. In questa occasione invece, il materiale scelto è la carta, andando a creare una chiara discrepanza tra la leggerezza e la fragilità del piano superficiale dell’opera e la ruvidità e la pesantezza del legno, dipinto in maniera grossolana e utilizzato come superficie di sostegno. Inoltre, la ricerca di un rapporto conflittuale tra materiali così differenti per caratteristiche fisiche ed uso, altro non è che la stilizzazione e la rappresentazione dei lavori urbani che contraddistinguono parte della produzione di -sten- e Lex. Lo scorrere del tempo e gli agenti atmosferici che inevitabilmente ed in maniera incontrollata incidono sulle loro opere pubbliche, sono qui resi arbitrariamente attraverso l’azione di rottura controllata delle matrici, così come l’esubero di carta presente in alcune delle opere in mostra, rimanda alle piccole imperfezioni che caratterizzano i lavori in strada.

L’intero corpo delle opere è quindi, sia nei suoi aspetti poetici e contenutistici, sia in quelli tecnico formali, teso alla ricerca di equilibrio tra le sue parti, gravita attorno a connubi e percezioni contrastanti, richiede l’abbandono delle nostre certezze visive e culturali per aprire con garbo e leggerezza nuovi e personali immaginari.

ones- for the serial production of images. By exalting the manual work that lies behind the creation of each matrix, and therefore underlining the absolute value of the work as a unique piece, Lex and -sten- nullify the stencil’s functionality.

Normally the matrices are cut out of sheets of PVC or cardboard so that they can support numerous layers of paint and can be used on the streets. In this case the chosen material is paper, creating a clear discrepancy between the lightness and the frailty of the art work and the roughness and bulkiness of the wood, coarsely painted and used as supporting surface. As a matter of fact, the search for a conflictual relationship between materials which are so physically different from each other is nothing but the stylization and the representation of the urban works that distinguish part of -stenand Lex’s production. The flow of time and the atmospheric agents which inevitably and uncontrollably etch their public works are arbitrarily reproduced here though the controlled ripping of the matrices, in the same way as the excess of paper in some of the exhibited works refers to the small imperfections of the street works.

The whole of the art works -both in its poetic and contents and in its technical and formal aspects-is therefore inclined to a search for balance between its parts. It gravitates around contrasting unions and perceptions, it demands for the abandon of our visual certainties to open new and personal imageries with grace and levity.
