The Durham Fall Fair through the eyes of a nine year old By Paul Grein Grey County Federation of Agriculture Public Speaking Competition, Grades 4 – 6 – 2013 Agricultural Award winning Speech What does a parade, cotton candy, a horse show, a tractor pull, a frog jumping contest and winning a bicycle have in common? Welcome to the annual Durham Fall Fair – held for the past 154 years, on Labour Day weekend. There’s no better way to end a summer than to spend a long weekend at the local agricultural fair. It starts early in the summer going through the fair book picking out items to make to be judged. Should I make an edible castle out of Rice Krispies, a country scene painted on a rock, or something made from Lego? Then it’s on to planning how to decorate an entry for the parade. We usually go with the fair theme, like “What’s Buzzing at the Fair”, or “Blue Jeans and Country Scenes” or this year’s theme, “Honey Bees and Apple Trees”. Sometimes I ride my bike or pull a wagon. Excitement builds when we load up the car on the Friday morning of the long weekend and take all my entries to the arena to be judged. I always think I have some winners each year! If I’m lucky, we head over to the arena after supper and see how my entries have done, and maybe check out the official opening, the crowning of the ambassador and hope Mom or Dad bring something home from the celebrity dessert auction. But the big events happen on Saturday. I leave early to line up for the parade. I’ve won 1st prize for my entry for at least the past 4 years! That 1st prize ribbon is pretty big and red, and I win $7! As soon as the parade is over, I head over to the pet show. There’s lots of dogs, and sometimes a few scared cats, some rabbits and hamsters. But the best part of the pet show has yet to come. You see, I look after the frog jumping contest. Early that morning, I head out to our pond with my net and catch the biggest, best jumping frogs in the whole county. I can catch about 10 frogs in 15 minutes! I rent them out for kids to use in the frog jumping contest for 25¢ a frog. This year, prices go up to 50¢ a frog … inflation you know! I end up renting out all my frogs, but I need to stop renting out the winning frog. I had the 3rd place winner last year. Everyone has a great time watching my frogs jump. One time a frog jumped up a lady’s dress! After the excitement of frogs dies down, I head over to the cotton candy stand, take a horseͲdrawn wagon ride to check out what all the dust is about at the western saddle show, see the dairy, beef and sheep show, get my stamps at all the stations to get a prize at the Fun Factory. The Fun Factory is the best place to play games of chance and to win a stuffed toy. I like to listen to the music of the live band, and wait for the final excitement at 4 p.m. – the bike draw! Any kids with a ticket and still at the arena can win. I close my eyes, cross my fingers, and tell my Mom I’ll clean my room for a week if I could just win that bike! I haven’t won it yet – maybe this year! It’s been a long day at the fair, but it’s not over yet. On Sunday is a church service and the grand finale…the antique tractor pull! I head over to the fairgrounds with my Dad to watch the smoke and listen to the noise of the tractors pull. At the end of the weekend, another successful Durham Fall Fair is over. It’s a wonderful time, all put together by volunteers. I can never wait for the next Fair to come! Maybe I’ll catch 20 frogs this year!
