PROFILES OF GENEROSITY A Mother’s Love for WJ

BY TONY BURKE ‘87

Anyone engaged with Walsh Jesuit knows how involved and important the Mothers’ Club is to our community. MC is consistently on campus making the lives of our staff and students better, making monthly faculty lunches, supplying snacks and treats for students during exams, charitable and wellness events, attaining necessary items for the school, fundraising, and so much more. How did a club so vital to the success of WJ and our students come to fruition? It all began with a letter from then Walsh Jesuit President Rev. Francis Dietz, S.J. followed by the first-ever Mothers’ Club meeting on February 16, 1966.

- Dr.

Enter Dolores Mohrman, one of the important founders of the original Mothers’ Club, the first Vice President, and 2nd President of MC. “Both of my parents were always involved very heavily in charity work,” said Dr. Ray Mohrman, Jr. ‘69, son of Dolores Mohrman. “Anything that had to do with the school was always very important. It seemed natural that my mom would jump in with both feet and become involved at Walsh.” Now in its 57th year, the Mothers’ Club is stronger than ever, and it is because of people like Dolores Mohrman and her tireless efforts in getting MC up and running. “She thoroughly enjoyed her work with the Mothers’ Club, the camaraderie with the other moms, and contributing to the school. She was very proud of being the Mothers’ Club President,” said Dr. Mohrman.

Dolores Mohrman’s passion and commitment to her beloved Walsh Jesuit led Dr. Mohrman to honor his mom while ensuring a bright future for incoming Warriors with the Dolores Mohrman Scholarship Fund. With the assistance of President Ertle and the modernday Mothers’ Club, the scholarship was brought into existence in 2019 with the first donations from Mr. Ertle and then current WJ moms. “I was looking for a way to help the critical level of funding needed so it could start distributing scholarships and have an impact,” Dr. Mohrman said.

Funds such as the Mohrman Scholarship have an incredible influence on students in need. Walsh Jesuit’s current Endowment is $17.98M, with $16.9M committed to tuition assistance. In 2022-2023, 64% of Walsh Jesuit students received $2.9M in tuition assistance; of that total, nearly $800,000 comes from endowment distributions! The generosity of our donors makes a substantial difference for current and future Warriors to attain an excellent education and put our students on a path for future success.

Many of our funders choose to endow a partial scholarship at the $25,000 level, while a full endowment is $100,000, but any amount makes an indelible mark on the future success of so many in our WJ community. It is because of philanthropic people like you and Dr. Mohrman, who value the importance of a Walsh Jesuit education and give students an opportunity they might not have otherwise. “I loved my years at Walsh and believe it has contributed so much to my life. I think secondary Catholic education is the most important years and has the most impact on development.”
