Tradie Health Month

This August is Tradie Health Month –a month dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of the health and wellbeing of men and women in trades.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, over the last 12 months:

• Construction ranks third for injury-related claims among all industries.

• Carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades have the highest number of injuries.

• Tradies working in construction are significantly affected by poor mental health.

With the right help and support, workplace injuries and mental health challenges can be minimised. As a tradie, it’s helpful to know of the wide range of tools, resources and services available to you to manage life’s ups and downs. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a symbol of great strength, courage, and resilience.

We can help you across a wide range of challenges:

• Loneliness, isolation, depression and anxiety

• Grief or suicidal thoughts

• Relationship issues

• Financial wellbeing

• Physical injury

• Supporting others

Hear from our Mental Health advocate Roman Koester!

Hi! I am the Drake Trades Manager from Western Australia. I deliver a dynamic and personable service to Drake Perth customers, prioritising strong relationships, mental health and safety and in-depth knowledge of clients and candidates alike.

Before beginning my career in the recruitment Industry, I ran my own Commercial Recording Studio in Melbourne for over 15 years, while also managing and touring the world in various successful bands. I then pivoted into the blue-collar sector, becoming more hands-on and gaining ‘on the tools’ experience through various Trade Assistant and Carpentry roles.

The most important aspect of my role at Drake International is ensuring that every person goes to work and returns home each day physically safely and in the best mental state possible.

While mental health is important across all industries, it is specifically undervalued in the blue-collar and trades sectors, due to outdated attitudes and stigma towards men’s mental health.

I am committed to raising awareness and empowering others to get the help that they need when the pressures of work or life get too much. Whether that means talking to a friend, peer, colleague or consulting an Employee Assistance Program provider such as Drake WellbeingHub. Research tells us that bottling up your feelings and emotions does not work. This month, for Tradie Health Week, reach out and get the help and support that you need.
