FALL 2018
Bulldog Evolution: How Griff Came to Be
Dear Alumni, One of my favorite things to do as your president is to visit with our alumni. The network of Drake Bulldogs around the globe is one of the University’s strongest assets. You are our most powerful ambassadors for the lifelong value of a Drake education.
Always remember that Drake is where you are. Don’t wait until you come back to campus for a reunion or Relays Week to connect with fellow alumni. Reach out online, engage with your regional alumni group, or come out to a game the next time the Bulldogs play near you. Drake alumni share an incredible bond as individuals who truly appreciate the education and life-defining experiences that Drake delivers— no matter how many miles away from campus. As is always the case, undergraduate recruitment remains a strategic priority for the University, and in the spirit of harnessing the strength of our alumni community, I’m asking for your help. We have found that when alumni share their stories about Drake, prospective students and their families form a stronger connection to the University. Therefore, I encourage you to take every opportunity to share your Drake experience with your friends and colleagues. Tell them about what makes this University so special—there’s nothing more valuable to our next students than to hear from someone who has experienced Drake. Thank you for being such great ambassadors for our University. I appreciate that your enthusiasm, passion, and support know no geographical boundaries. Sincerely,
Marty Martin President, Drake University

ALUMNI PROFILE: DECARLOS LOVE
BY | E L L E N K O E S T E R , J O ’ 1 9 , A S ’ 1 9
From Iowa to Silicon Valley DeCarlos Love, AS’06, has had a unique career trajectory, bouncing him around the United States with several big-brand companies. He remembers exactly where his journey began— in a Drake classroom. A visit from the CIO of Principal Financial Group led to his first job out of college. The CIO spoke in one of his business classes and Love expressed interest in working for his company, landing him a position as a software engineer in Minneapolis. But Love hadn’t yet found his calling. His next job revealed to him exactly what he wanted to do. He worked in a product-oriented role at Target Corporate, working on web and mobile e-commerce experiences. “It was there I learned that what I was really interested in was creating great user experiences,” Love says. “I saw firsthand how a good experience can really make a difference in customer response and how that can benefit your business.”

BLUE | FALL 2018 | FROM IOWA TO SILICON VALLEY
This passion pointed Love toward Los Angeles, where he jumped onboard with a digital agency. He became immersed in what it takes to design products that create the best experience possible for customers. He led the charge on the creation of such streaming services as FXNOW and Simpsons World for Fox and FX. But Love was thinking bigger. Before moving to Los Angeles, he’d reached out to the greats—Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Apple. After initially rejecting his application, Apple later contacted him, offering him a job that put him right in the middle of it all in Silicon Valley. But Love still wasn’t satisfied.
“After a couple of years with Apple, I started thinking about my longterm career. For me, it came back to my two biggest passions, sports and technology,” Love says.
Those two passions also trace their beginnings to Drake, where Love pursued technological know-how in the classroom as a computer science major and business minor and also sought athletic excellence on the Drake football field. “My college experience would not have been the same without the lessons learned, the discipline taught, or the lasting experiences that football provided for me. There are coaches and teammates I continue to talk to today,” Love says. “And in some cases, they are the people my new employer is engaging with for business.” Love has returned to his roots at Athos, a company at the forefront of wearable athletic technology, as their head of product and design. Athos sells sportswear embedded with sensors linked to a mobile app, giving athletes, their trainers, and their coaches real-time analysis of which muscles are being used during a workout. Love has come full circle, doing what he loved at Drake for his career.
“The math and science education at Drake was truly remarkable,” Love says. “It is the very foundation that allowed me to experience and succeed in what I’m doing today.” Read more

The Evolution of the Bulldog We all have a special place in our hearts for Bulldogs, but did you know that Drake University has a live mascot in addition to our traditional mascot? And how exactly does the Beautiful Bulldog Contest winner fit into the equation? Well, we’re here to clarify how there’s room for all of these pups in our hearts.
Griff has been Drake’s official live mascot since May of 2015. He is what’s known as a “finished champion” in the show dog circuit, but his career in the spotlight is far from over. He was primed for the limelight as Drake’s furry ambassador.
Griff
Erin Bell, Drake University’s Live Mascot Director, began her search for a live mascot following the passing of the legendary Porterhouse, who was Drake’s unofficial mascot from 2009 to 2013. Bell— with her husband, Kevin, LW’11—reached out to friends and professionals in the bulldog network (yep, that’s a thing), describing the qualities of a Drake Bulldog. Griff fit the bill perfectly and found his forever home at Drake University.
The dog. The myth. The legend.
Griff adores people and can never get enough attention. He has an insatiable appetite (though recently he’s been on a diet), and he loves to take long naps— 7

punctuated by moments of mischief. Griff, age 6, can be spotted meeting with prospective students at “Fridays with Griff” in Cole Hall, attending various athletic events (rowing regattas are his favorite), campus celebrations, community festivals, or on brief walks through the Beaverdale neighborhood, where he lives with his parents and siblings: Carter (4.5), Sydney (3), Magoo (9, 63 in dog years), and Lottie (8, 56 in dog years). The Bells were caretakers for Porterhouse, beloved by the campus from when he took the crown at the Beautiful Bulldog Contest in 2009 to his passing in 2013. It’s understandable that people often think the Beautiful Bulldog Contest winner and Drake’s live mascot are the same dog, but they’re actually different. The more Bulldogs the better, right?
Spike For the past 40 years, Drake has hosted the Beautiful Bulldog Contest where bulldogs compete for a crown. Judges take temperament, beauty, school spirit, and other characteristics into consideration when choosing. This year, the winner was Bow-Z, a lovely English Bulldog from Pella, Iowa. Following her win, she served as the live mascot for the Drake Relays. She will keep the crown until April 2019 when the next pup is named, while Griff will continue his reign as live mascot until he decides to retire. You can follow the Drake Beautiful Bulldog Contest magic by liking their Facebook page:
Beautiful Bulldog
facebook.com/BeautifulBulldog.
PRO TIP: You can follow Griff on Instagram and Twitter @DrakeUGriff to stay up-to-date on his life.
Now that we’ve cleared up the difference between a Beautiful Bulldog winner and Griff, it’s time to discuss the mascot you’re most familiar with, Spike. Our beloved Spike has gone through many adaptations since his official arrival in 1957. Our bulldog mascot was coined in the early 1900s after a reporter noticed that two English Bulldogs frequently attended football practice and games. The mascot changed from the Drake Ducks to the Drake Bulldogs when John Griffith (Griff’s namesake and owner of the two Bulldogs) became the athletic director in 1908. Spike went unnamed until 1957, when he was officially titled during the campus’ homecoming celebration.
So, what do you say? Do you have enough room in your heart for all of this Bulldog love?

DRAKE GOES ONLINE
If you’ve ever contemplated an advanced degree, but haven’t found the time to get to class, we may have found your answer. Drake recently launched a new online Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Administration (MPA) which follow the launch of an online Master of Arts in Communication and Master of Science in Education earlier this year. A Master of Data Analytics will launch online in January 2019.
LET THE SUN SHINE IN
A new gathering area adds a beautiful walkway and green space to the heart of campus. The Ray Promenade is named after former Iowa Governor and Drake President, Robert D. Ray, BN’52, LW’54; and his wife, Billie, ED’50. Located just East of Collier-Scripps Hall, the space creates an outdoor classroom, performance venue, meeting area, and picnic destination for sunny days.

KNAPP CENTER IMPROVEMENTS A SLAM DUNK Drake University’s Knapp Center received more than $700,000 in upgrades over the summer, including the complete replacement of the court and installation of a state-of-the-art LED lighting system. It’s been more than 25 years since all 28,388 square feet of the Knapp Center floor has been replaced. Stop by and check out the accompanying practice courts, which pay homage to Drake’s history by featuring historic Drake logos.
Drake University and the Boys and Girls Club of Central Iowa will join forces to provide after-school and summertime services to hundreds of K-12 area youth. The Gregory & Suzie Glazer Burt Club, is currently under construction and is only the third in the nation to be located on a private college campus. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2019, the center will give Drake students educational and service opportunities and connect the University to surrounding neighborhoods.
COURT IS IN SESSION U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Neil M. Gorsuch gave a special lecture to Drake Law students, faculty, and staff on August 16. Gorsuch talked about the importance of courage in the legal profession— acknowledging mistakes, learning from failure, and doing the right thing–even if it’s the unpopular choice. President Donald Trump nominated Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court in January 2017.
