Our mission is to provide an exceptional learning environment that prepares students for meaningful personal lives, professional accomplishments, and responsible global citizenship. The Drake experience is distinguished by collaborative learning among students, faculty, and staff and by the integration of the liberal arts and sciences with professional preparation. Our inspiration is that together we transform lives and strengthen communities.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Graduates, Congratulations on reaching this significant milestone! While we cannot be together on stage to celebrate this culmination of your academic achievements, nothing can take away your remarkable accomplishments. Over the past several years, I have been inspired by your intellect, admired the countless ways you serve, witnessed your tireless work ethic, and marveled at your talents on the stage, court, and field. Most recently, I have watched you excel during a global pandemic, stand up to racial injustices, and compassionately support your families, friends, and classmates in a time of need. I have seen you grow as students, leaders, and human beings who will undoubtedly shape the world. My hope for you is that you will use the knowledge, skills, and lessons you have acquired at Drake to continue being the change our world needs, breaking down barriers and building bridges. In many ways, what defines a Bulldog and unites the Class of 2020 is your drive to make a difference in the lives of others and your community. Never forget, a Drake degree sets you apart. It will propel and serve you for the rest of your life. It is with great pleasure that I officially welcome you into the esteemed ranks of our alumni—a distinguished network of 74,000 worldwide. Go forth and make a difference. Your future is bright. Sincerely,

Marty Martin President 3

COMMENCEMENT TRADITION

The Blue Tassel Traditionally, graduates’ caps are adorned with a tassel, in which the color of the tassel denotes the discipline. In 2020, at a time when the world faces unprecedented challenges, and for the first time in University history, all graduates will receive a commemorative blue tassel with their diploma. The blue tassel is a symbol of unity and hope. It acknowledges the sacrifices and hurdles the Class of 2020 has overcome to ensure the well-being of our community, while also celebrating the pivotal role they will play in rethinking and reshaping the future. The blue tassel captures the resilient spirit of the Class of 2020 and its mantra: “We are all in this together.” The tassel will forever be an extraordinary reminder of the Class of 2020’s collective strength and desire to better the world.

The Ceremonial Mace Since the Middle Ages, the mace has been used in the courts by rulers to signify their power and authority. When placed on the rostrum, it indicated that the governing body was in formal session. The ceremonial mace is carried by a mace bearer or by the beadle, an official in the British university who leads the academic procession. The symbol has been adopted in American higher education and is carried by the Marshal of the University at official academic convocations. The ceremonial mace was carried in the academic procession of Drake’s annual commencement ceremony for the first time in 1983. The mace and stand were created by Professor Emeritus Condon Kuhl, then professor of art at Drake University. The mace is handcrafted from ebony and overlaid and appointed with silver. It measures two and one-half feet in length and weighs about five pounds.
