Bulldogs are ferociously independent; they’re never content to simply take what life gives them. They march with dogged purpose, enjoying every day while constantly shaping their futures. Sometimes quiet, always observant, but never overlooked.
Taking a bold new step is never easy. Drake has helped transfer students switch paths almost since the day of our founding in 1881. You’ll be connected with a transfer counselor and financial aid expert and get support from plenty of peers who have traveled the transfer student path.
No matter where (or when) your last college experience was, Drake will deliver more experiences and opportunities—inside and outside the classroom—that are geared toward your interests and aspirations.

“
The faculty and staff at Drake are extremely passionate about seeing students thrive. The community on campus made me feel like I was a Bulldog before I transferred! The countless career opportunities, the quality of my education, and the welcoming atmosphere are just a handful of reasons why I transferred to Drake, and why I’m proud to call myself a Drake Bulldog.
Let us be your guide
Kelsey Christansen, public relations and advertising; Class of 2022. Transferred from McHenry County College
Education Across the Globe
“
Kathlyn Wagner, international relations; Class of 2022. Transferred from Des Moines Area Community College with an Associate of Arts degree.
Kathlyn Wagner transferred to Drake during the Fall 2020 semester. She chose Drake because of the small class sizes and welcoming environment, which made the transfer process to a four-year university less intimidating.
Wagner took advantage of the many organizations on campus. She joined Drake Symphonic Band, the Japanese Language and Culture Association, and the International Student Association. On top of this, she formed close-knit connections with her professors, fostering interpersonal relationships founded on similar interests.
Wagner graduated in May of 2022 with her Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations, and earned minors in Human Rights Studies, East Asian Studies, and Japanese. She moved to Taiwan to teach English as a Fulbright Scholar; an international fellowship funded by the U.S. Department of State.
“Don’t be afraid to attend events or try new things, even if it’s last minute or with someone you don’t know too well. That’s how I made some amazing friends at Drake.”
Alex Maciejewski, pre-pharmacy/Pharm.D. candidate with a LEAD concentration; Schaumburg, Ill.; Class of 2022.
“Through networking and many other invaluable experiences, I was hired as a pharmacy intern at a local community pharmacy. I’ve been able to learn so much—not only just by training, but through patient consulting and immersing myself into the field of pharmacy. I recently completed a job shadow at the Mercy Medical Center oncology department.”
Kaili Miller, magazine media/graphic design; Kansas City, Mo.; Class of 2022.
“At Drake, I’ve been able to find my place through being an assistant editor for Drake Magazine and member of the Gamma Omicron chapter of Alpha Phi. Both of these organizations push me to pursue my passions for journalism and sisterhood because I’m surrounded by people who inspire me to dream big.”
Sydnei Washington, elementary education major/sociology minor; Frankfort, Ill.; Class of 2022.
“I strive to make a positive impact on the communities that have helped me. I do this by giving back through several organizations on campus. Drake University has provided me with tools and opportunities to make my goal a reality.”
UNAPOLOGETICALLY ACADEMIC
Drake offers everything you’d expect to find at a university—sports and the associated swag, student organizations and other extracurriculars, social opportunities, food and fun around campus and Des Moines, and more. But from your first day on campus, you’ll understand Drake’s priority: academics and other educational opportunities that help you grow professionally and personally. Everything else comes second.
Mix & Match Majors
Chemistry and fine art? Pre-law and music? Astronomy and public relations? Why not? We take “nobody’s ever done that before” as a challenge. Drake students blaze their own educational trails to earn degrees that will last a lifetime.
You’ll start work in your major from day one, and interdisciplinary classes and skilled advising make it all very doable in four years.

The World is Your Classrom
Studying abroad gave me a whole new perspective on life. Regarding my major, it gave me more of a sense of connecting with people as people, rather than clients, when I enter the workforce—and to be more open to cultural differences and how I can implement them into cultural representation in my field. Also, studying abroad opened me up to a whole new plethora of majors I may be interested in.
— Maya Jade Alexander, marketing and advertising; Overland Park, Kan.; Class of 2022.
When education gets real
Des Moines offers everything from Fortune 50 companies to energetic start-ups. It’s also a thriving hub for government, nonprofit, legal, healthcare, insurance, and agribusiness firms. Plus, Des Moines is growing fast and it’s full of businesses looking for new talent. All of this adds up to abundant opportunities for internships, experiences, networking, and jobs.
“
During each of my three years at Drake I held a different, eye-opening internship. I received these positions because of the knowledge I gained in class and the network I created on campus. Having the opportunity to work in my chosen field prior to graduation reassured me that I received the skill set to be successful post-graduation and that being a transfer student didn’t limit my opportunities to be successful at Drake.
“
Drake’s January Term gets you out of the classroom—and maybe out of the state, country, or hemisphere. It’s really up to you.
J-Term allows you to dive into subjects like letterpress or robot programming or do some traveling while learning in places like Washington, D.C., Europe, Chile, the Galapagos Islands, and the Bahamas. No extra tuition needed.
You can also take exploration to the next level—a study abroad experience, with various locations (more than 70 countries), lengths of stay, language involvement, and experiences available.

TRANSFERRING CREDIT
When you enroll at Drake, you may transfer up to 94 academic credit hours for all majors except the professional PharmD program, which accepts up to 181 credits from regionally accredited institutions. A maximum of 66 credits may be transferred from two-year institutions. Up to 16 credit hours of career-technical courses may be accepted at the discretion of the assistant or associate dean of the Drake college or school in which you want to enroll. Courses accepted for transfer credits must parallel courses offered at Drake or otherwise be appropriate for college-level credit. Drake considers full transfer credit for courses in which you have received a grade of “A,” “B,” or “C” (where “C” is equal to 2.0) or the equivalent of “P” on a pass-fail system (where “P” indicates a quality of work no lower than “C”
on a conventional grading scale). A minimum of 30 semester hours must be completed while in residence at Drake.
A course-by-course review of all attempted and completed courses is prepared for each admitted transfer student by his or her college or school. You will receive details on how to access your unofficial Drake transcript online. You’ll meet individually with Drake’s transfer student transition advisor to review how your credits transfer to Drake and what classes you should take for your program interests. When final official transcripts are received for any courses completed after admission, your Drake record is updated. General Education Articulation Agreement Admitted students who have met the criteria outlined below will enter Drake University having fulfilled the Drake Curriculum general education requirements (Areas of Inquiry), with the exception of the senior capstone requirement in the student’s area of study. Students within one year of high school graduation are required to complete a first-year seminar.
Criteria
• Minimum 60 semester credits acceptable for transfer.
• Minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average in transfer coursework.
• One of the following degrees from a regionally accredited institution:
• Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree from a community college in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, or Missouri.
• Associate of Science (A.S.) degree from a community college in Iowa.
• Bachelor’s degree from any regionally accredited institution. Students are required to submit a final transcript with proof of their degree prior to the beginning of their second term (excluding summer or J-Term) of enrollment. Students who fail to provide the appropriate documentation will be required to complete the general education requirements. Students who do not meet the criteria above will have their credits evaluated on a courseby-course basis.
