bar book 2011 FINAL FINAL_Pages 20/05/2011 10:03 Page 2

introduction There are some great pubs and bars in Scotland, and I’ve been fortunate enough to visit most of them in my job as Editor, for the past 17 years, of the pub industry’s trade magazine, DRAM. This book highlights 100 of my favourite bars and pubs, which are among the very best that Scotland has to offer, that’s not to say there are not many more that deserve inclusion. This pictorial guide highlights pubs and bars that excel in keeping and attracting customers. Whether it’s their stylish surroundings, traditional charm, excellent service or great ambience, they are all great examples of Scottish hospitality at its best. I hope you enjoy visiting the bars and pubs included in this guide and we’ll be updating it on a regular basis at our website, www.scotlandstopbars.co.uk. Susan Young

29 29 Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow, G1 3AJ Tel: 0141 225 5615 www.29glasgow.com This members club opened four years ago and is still a major draw in the city. Indeed it has never been so popular. That’s no doubt due to the excellent service, quality food, and general relaxed ambience that the club offers. Situated at the very heart of the city centre, at Royal Exchange Square, it has a modest entrance, but a very plush interior. From its lively Oyster bar, to its fabulous outside terrace, private dining rooms, and Network bar, whether you are using it for business or pleasure, you won’t be disappointed. It’s most recent award was for The Grill which recently picked up an Eat Scotland Silver Award.

What’s special? Its outdoor terrace, probably the best in Scotland.

the admiral 72a Waterloo Street, Glasgow, G2 7DA Tel: 0141 221 7705 www.theadmiralbar.com The Admiral is one of Glasgow’s most iconic traditional bars, but it also has a modern twist. Original features including ornate tiling, cornicing and wood panelling, marry together with a modern basement club and music venue. In the past the likes of entertainers including Billy Connolly frequented the pub. Today the customers include the after work crowd, and people who like a laidback chilled club atmosphere and, of course, live music. It’s open until 3am, and during the day it serves up a popular menu, which includes the likes of pies and pizza.

What’s special? The entertainment, a class act.

bar 91 89-91 Candleriggs, Glasgow, G1 1NP Tel: 0141 552 5211 www.bar91.co.uk It doesn’t matter what time of day you visit this bar, there are always folk in it. From young professionals to music types, in fact all types. It’s got a shabby chic feel, that is both welcoming and comfortable. In the summer its doors open up to allow you to catch the suns rays, while in the winter you can sit at the bar and enjoy the banter. It was one of the first bars in Glasgow to offer WEST beer, and staff are always happy to tell you of the latest addition to its drinks repertoire. Its food is tasty too, and its burgers are among the best in the west. The bar has got staying power... once you are in, you don’t want to venture back out!

What’s special? Its homemade burgers.

bar gandolfi 64 Albion Street, Glasgow, G1 1NY Tel: 0141 552 4462 www.cafegandolfi.com Small, but beautifully formed, springs to mind when you visit this bar. It’s situated above Café Gandolfi, and it’s amazing the number of folk that don’t know it’s there, which is surprising because it’s a great bar. It has an excellent range of wines and spirits, and staff make some super cocktails too. It’s very light and airy during the day, and cosy and intimate at night. It’s not a place to go with a large party of folk, but it’s ideal for a crowd of two or four, with small tables, crafted by Paul Hodgkiss, and stools at the bar. The menu is not large, but the food is excellent. It offers traditional dishes such dishes as mince and tatties but also caters for more adventurous palates too.

What’s special? The secretative nature of this bar, a hidden gem.

bar ten 10 Mitchell Lane, Glasgow, G1 3NU Tel: 0141 572 1448 www.navantaverns.com/bar10 Bar Ten, opposite the Lighthouse in Mitchell Lane, claims the title Glasgow’s original “style bar”. Designed by Ben Kelly, creator of Manchester’s legendary Hacienda Club, this bar captures the essence of a busy, metropolitan Euro-bar. It still appeals to an early 20’s crowd, and has an energy and vibe which sets it apart. The staff too are laid back, but efficient with it, friendly and on-the ball. Entertainment comes in the form of DJ’s at the weekend and pub quizzes and suchlike during the week. Bar Ten is a good place to stop for lunch, with a hearty home-cooked menu providing something for every taste.

What’s special? A chilled atmosphere, with good service.

ben nevis 1147 Argyle Street, Glasgow, G3 8TB Tel: 0141 576 5204 This truly is one of my favourite Scottish pubs. It’s definitely not big, but it is a great wee pub, situated in an area that is up and coming. A great selection of whisky, after all this is a renowned and award winning whisky bar, super staff, particularly mine host Elaine, and a motley selection of customers all help create a real buzz. Whether you are wearing a suit, or dungarees, 80 or 18, you are welcome at the Ben. Dogs too have their place, and a few treats are kept for them behind the bar. There’s live music, mainly of the spontaneous variety, and there’s always something going on.

blackfriars 36 Bell Street, Glasgow, G1 1LG Tel: 0141 552 5924 www.blackfriarsglasgow.com One of the original Merchant City establishments, and one of the most popular, Blackfriars remains dedicated to serving up quality beer. It’s also got one of the best selections of beer around, from the up and coming Brewdog brews to Deuchars IPA, and a raft of guest ales. It really appeals to beer enthusiasts. However it has mass appeal too because of its relaxed ambience. Wooden floors, a couple of giant barrels, and bric-abrac creates a slightly bohemian feel, and it attracts everyone from students to professionals. Live music is a regular feature and it also offers reasonably priced and tasty food.

It must have one of the best views in Glasgow, overlooking Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the park. It’s stylish with nods to its Butchershop name in the shape of white tiles, and some artwork, and of course when it comes to the food. It offers great steaks and burgers and fresh seafood too. The bar has polished wooden floors, tall posing tables, and booths, and there is an outside decked area as well. In winter it’s cosy, and in the summer you can hang out on the deck. the butterfly and the pig 151-153 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4SQ Tel: 0141 221 7711 www.thebutterflyandthepig.com This bar was doing eclectic, just about before any bar in the country. From its mismatched furniture to its teacups and cutlery, you’ll recognise items from your granny’s parlour in this city centre bar. In the bar itself there are armchairs and sofas, but on a busy night the chances of getting a seat are just about nil. The restaurant area is immediately adjacent to the bar, and serves up great food. From traditional steak pies to pizza, it’s all cooked on the premises, and it’s certainly not average. Also worth checking out is the tea room upstairs which serves a great selection of mouth-watering cakes.

That could be because it is immediately above Central Station, but it could also be because it is a fabulous looking bar. Grand modern chandeliers, combined with an authentic black and white tiled floor, and mirrored, art deco bar, sets off the champagne buckets beautifully. Situated just at Charing Cross and nearly obscured by a building that stretches across the M8, it’s a wee haven for a good pint of beer, and great bar food. In the summer its beer garden is a hidden oasis, west facing, and perfect on a balmy night. While Bourbon aficionado’s can revel in its extensive list. It’s got a stylish appearance, but its not too polished, in fact it’s the sort of place that the writer Charles Bukowski, who created the character Chinaski, would probably have at felt at home in. He didn’t think you had to ‘try’ too hard, and Chinaskis get this balance just right.

criterion 568 Dumbarton Road, Glasgow, G11 6RH Tel: 0141 334 1964 www.criterioncafe.com Criterion is an all-day cafe-barrestaurant which takes its name from a fondly remembered Partick institution from an earlier era. This bar definitely belongs to the 21st century. It takes all the elements of a classic Bistro café – from the outside it looks like an Art Deco cafe, while inside, a black and white floor, cosy booths, snazzy coffee machine, wood panelling and a marble soda fountain add to the illusion. It also has an impressive range of draught beers, an enticing cocktail list and a fresh Mediterranean menu. This is a meeting place for eating, drinking, gossiping, meeting old friends and making new ones.

The bar itself has a very traditional look with high ceilings, cornicing and its original tiled floor but its bar staff belong to the “let’s amuse the customers brigade.” As a result you never know quite what to expect. It’s a favourite with the pre-theatre crowd, situated as it is right across from the Kings, but it also has its fair share of regulars who come for the beer and the chat. stravaigin 28 Gibson Street, Glasgow, G12 8NX Tel: 0141 334 2665 www.stravaigin.com This bar first opened in 1994, but last year it underwent a refurbishment which saw the premises double in size. Now the venue has a good sized bar on the right, with floor to ceiling windows, real fires, and lots of quirky, salvaged design features. It may be new, but it looks like it has been there for years. The service is spot on too, and the food is gastro bar food at its best. You can dine in the bar, or in the adjacent area, which extends upstairs, and if you want more of a dining room experience there is the restaurant in the basement.

What’s special? The service and very tasty food.

tiki bar & kitsch inn 214 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4HW Tel: 0141 332 1341 www.tikibarglasgow.com This is one of the newest bars on the Glasgow circuit, and it is the cities first Tiki bar. This exotically styled bar is certainly completely different from any other bar in the city with bamboo wall coverings, a giant totem pole, blow fish for light fittings and a coffin behind the bar. But it’s the cocktails, which really stand out. Not only are they, in the main, original Tiki recipes, but they are served in original Tiki glassware. For instance a Mai Tai is served up in a Crystal God goblet and its famous Zombie, in a ceramic Tiki mug.

What’s special? The cocktails and the glasses they come in.

ubiquitous chip 8-12 Ashton Lane, Glasgow, G12 8SJ Tel: 0141 334 5007 www.ubiquitouschip.co.uk This is one of my favourite bars, and it has also stood the test of time. It has a downstairs bar, which serves up fine cocktails, wine and beer. While the original bar has a great selection of wines, and a reasonable variety of whiskies. But it stands out because of the quality of its service, its general appearance, which is immaculate, and the randomness of its customers. It really is a great place to meet old and new friends. It was formerly a butcher’s shop, in fact you can still see the butcher’s hooks, but that’s not all to look out for. It’s full of great memorabilia including a fabulous juke box, a stuffed dog, and menus which are printed onto the back of vinyl LP’s and 45’s. This bar gets very busy, particularly at the weekend, but during the week it’s also a hive of activity, perfect for a girls lunch, business meeting or family dinner.

tonic 34 North Castle Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3BN Tel: 0131 225 6431 www.bar-tonic.co.uk This basement bar for many years was a favourite with bartenders, because it was one of the first, and one of the smallest, to concentrate on cocktails. Today its cocktail credentials are still intact with its bartenders lovingly concocting new, as well as classic, drinks. They are also happy to share their drinks knowledge. Despite the fact that it is small it makes the most of its available space with small booths, fixed seating and white tables, which reflect the candlelight at night. The bar also does food, and there’s an outside area too.

What’s special? This is a great place to come for a cocktail.

villager 49 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EJ Tel: 0131 226 2781 www.villager-e.com Villager has stood the test of time. This bar, which has an air of shabby chic, was doing chic when everyone else was doing style. And nothing much has changed. The dark bar leads into a comfortable slouching area, with very comfy low-slung sofas, an old-fashioned chandelier, and exposed brick walls. The quality of its cocktails, its range of foreign beers, and favourites such as Guinness, of the moment bar food, and relaxed service ethos, have contributed to its longevity. the ship inn 120-122 Harbour Street, Irvine, Ayrshire, KA12 8PZ Tel: 01294 279722 www.theshipinnirvine.co.uk This family-run pub is the oldest in Irvine, and easily the most popular gastro pub in the area. Its olde world charm, efficient service, and delicious food have proved a winner over the years with the pub picking up numerous awards including Sunday Mail Pub of the year. It’s much larger than you might first think with quite a few nooks and crannies in the main bar, and a spacious dining area to the rear. It also has a private function suite with its own bar upstairs. At the weekends they don’t take bookings, so you may have to wait for a table, but it’s worth it.

What’s special? Its food, particularly the steak pie.

ABERDEEN

soul bar 333 Union Street, Aberdeen, AB11 6BS Tel: 01224 211150 www.pbdevco.com Soul really is a bit different, after all it’s not every day you can go for a drink in a church. What’s great about this bar is that they have retained the stained glass windows, traditional stone work and pulpit, and designed a stylish, and contemporary venue around the original features. There are two distinctive bars, one dark and trendy, the other lighter in character. It’s definitely a venue that takes you through the day and into the night and one that appeals to all ages. You can come in for lunch, or after work, for cocktails, or come for the clubbing experience.

What’s special? Its funky design.

The bottle will look slightly different, but it will be the same great tasting liquid.
