ALES BELHAVEN 2015 was an award-winning year for Belhaven. The company picked up the accolade Beer Brand Owner/Distributor of the Year at the DRAM Awards after customers gave them top marks for their range and service. As well as the producing Scotland’s most popular ale, Belhaven Best, the company also supply an excellent range of craft beers, including their own range which has been produced with Scottish humour in mind. The packaging features funny hand-drawn illustrations, simple three-word flavour descriptions and brightly coloured labelling. Belhaven’s other craft beers flavours include Scottish Oat Stout, Scottish Ale, Speyside Oak Aged Blonde Ale and last but not least, Craft Pilsner.
SULWATH From small beginnings in early 1996, Sulwath has firmly put Dumfries & Galloway on the real ale map; with a loyal band of beer fans, numerous awards and plaudits for its brews. All Sulwath’s ales are made and put into casks or bottled on the premises, with visitors able to sample the beers in the brewery reception and bar area. Fully licensed, the visitor centre is open Monday to Saturday, with tours available on Mondays and Fridays. The owners have worked hard to make Sulwath a success and thoroughly enjoy what they share their passion with other real ale enthusiasts too. Online sales available at www.sulwathbrewers.co.uk
MCEWAN’S This year McEwan’s will celebrate it’s 160th anniversary, continuing it’s legacy as one of Scotland’s most famous brands. In 1857, one year after the company’s birth, McEwan’s brewed it’s first ever IPA. Launched at McEwan’s Party at the Palace in August 2015, today’s McEwan’s IPA has been inspired by the original. A modern twist on a classic, it’s a lightly hopped and refreshing ale that delivers a citrus fruit aroma and dry, crisp finish. To find out more, contact McEwan’s Beer Company on 0131 339 3300.
JOHN SMITH’S John Smith’s is the biggest selling ale in the UK but that doesn’t mean it is resting on its laurels. Last year the beer brand introduced new branding for its Extra Smooth and Original ales as well as new glassware and founts. This was backed up by a new advertising campaign - The ‘Only Ordinary By Name’ which involved the brand acquiring the first ever pint shaped constellation, made up from 100 stars in the night sky. It then gave blokes, with extraordinary talents, the chance to own one of them. The digital activation invited folk to upload a short video of them showcasing a special skill to www.johnsmiths.co.uk.

CIDER THISTLY CROSS Thistly Cross Cider has grown from beginnings at East Lothian farmers’ markets, to national and international success, now available across the UK and in 44 US states – winning an array of awards along the way. Thistly’s craft ciders, handmade in the east of Scotland, are made from real fruit, pressed by hand and matured for upwards of six months. Their core range consists of: Original 6.2%, Traditional 4.4%, Whisky Cask, Real Strawberry, Real Ginger and Real Elderflower. Also produced on the farm is Jaggy Thistle, a Scottish Scrumpy, slow-fermented and matured in sherry casks. Ciders are available in kegs, bottles and ciderboxes.
KOPPARBERG Kopparberg is the UK’s biggest selling packaged cider. The brands original Pear cider has been joined by Mixed Fruit, Strawberry & Lime, Naked Apple and last year it launched Spiced Apple in time for the winter. Another benefit for licensees is that Kopparberg’s range includes no alcohol ciders Pear, Mixed fruit and Strawberry & Lime perfect for our drink-driving limit. Kopparberg mixed fruit is still the No1 packaged cider in Scotland, but expect to see sales of Spiced Apple take off this winter with its special warming urns.
MAGNERS Magners introduced new product innovations to the Scottish on-trade towards the end of 2015 - Magners Alcohol Free and Forbidden Flavours. The new Magners Alcohol Free variant contains zero alcohol in response to consumer demand for alcohol free alernatives, and it came in at only 18 calories per 330ml bottle, which is less than half of the leading standard soft drinks. The new Forbidden Flavour variants are available in a 500ml bottle with vibrant packaging. They were created especially to deliver a refreshing, sweet taste while offering customers a choice of two intriguing flavours – Magners Strawberry and Lime (ABV 4%) and Magners Cloudy Lemon (ABV 4.5%).
STRONGBOW Strongbow remains the UK’s biggest selling draught cider and its variant Strongbow Dark Fruit, which launched in 2014, has been one of the most successful fruit launches of all time. In 2014 Strongbow Dark Fruit took twice the revenue of all the innovations of the next 100 alcohol brands in the UK, and it has been credited with putting some va va voom back into the draught cider category in the on-trade. Meanwhile last year the brand went upmarket with the launch of Strongbow Cloudy Apple, a premium version, designed to be sold at a higher margin that the original.

Stay Clean Beer Line Cleaning Tel: 08456 807081 www.cleanbeerlines.co.uk Cleaning System increases profit margins on beers and ciders by allowing you to clean the lines monthly instead of weekly. The system effectively restricts the build up of yeast on the lines by generating low frequency radio waves to be passed through the beer lines. These have a ‘de yeasting’ effect, naturally cleansing the lines and giving you a clear, clean beer.

CRAFT BEER BARNEY’S Barney’s Beer brews award winning craft beer from it’s home at the Summerhall brewery; the longest established, non-continuously operating brewery in Edinburgh. Originally established circa 1705. Barney's has built a reputation for downright drinkable beer, full of interesting flavour. Regular beers include the best selling Volcano IPA, the malty/spicy Red Rye & the hop bursting freshness of Extra Pale. Barney’s also brews limited edition beers; for example Double Volcano, Alt beer as well as collaborations with Idlewild, John Byrne & The International Science Festival. Barney’s Beer is available in cask, keg & 330ml bottles. Email: info@barneysbeer.co.uk, Tel: 07512253660
COAST TO COAST Caledonian Brewery Last year, Caledonian Brewery unveiled its new pilot brewery ‘Wee George’ which can now do smaller brew runs than the main brewery. As a result ‘Wee George’ allows the brewery team to test and develop both new and existing recipes without the usual constraints of minimum brew length. Their first new ale was an American inspired Pale Ale called Coast to Coast which launched in the summer. This new beer, a 4.6% ABV polished bronze ale, brewed with full leaf fresh-packed American hops imported from Yakima Valley on the West Coast, was married with British East Coast maritime malt. Look out for some new craft beers in 2016...
RANDOLPH’S LEAP Speyside Brewery This award-winning brewery Speyside Brewery is known for creating beers using some of the finest ingredients and the same water that is used to produce many of Scotland’s well-liked whiskies. It’s craft ales include: Randolph’s Leap, named after an iconic gorge along the River Findhorn in Moray, Bottlenose Bitter and Moray IPA. What sets Speyside Brewery apart is its recent ‘wheel ale’ promotion raised awareness for the brewery, and drew attention to its beers by distributing the signature Speyside beer from bright yellow wheelie bins. This portable bar innovation has proven to be a flexible and fun experience for consumers, allowing Speyside to produce and serve their beer for all to taste in any surrounding.
OLD PAROCHIAL Tempest Brewing Last year saw Tempest move to a new brewery, and utilise a new bottling line, which led to the crew there deciding to make ‘Old Parochial’ again. The beer was originally brewed three years ago, as an imperial strength scotch ale barrel aged for six months in both ex bourbon and sherry casks. This time Craigellachie ex-bourbon casks were sourced for the new brew. The barrels lend a smooth hum of alcohol warmth, and smoky, woody notes that are characteristic of bourbon barrels. This is certainly a complex beer.

GIN EDINBURGH GIN Nestled beneath Rutland Place, Edinburgh, there is a hidden wonderland – the Edinburgh Gin Distillery. Two stills, named Flora and Caledonia, create the wonderfully individual gins that taste as spectacular as the equipment used to create them. The original small-batch craft gin has been uniquely distilled using the finest Scottish botanicals – milkthistle, pine and heather. The Edinburgh Gin range also features a Cannonball Navy Strength Gin and the stunningly refreshing Seaside Gin. Edinburgh Gin’s fruit liqueurs have also proved exceedingly popular since their 2012 launch. The range features the colourful Raspberry Liqueur, made with Perthshire raspberries and pure cane sugar, the Elderflower liqueur, made using fresh, handpicked elderflowersand the Rhubarb and Ginger liqueur, produced from tangy spring crop rhubarb and warming oriental ginger. Produced in small batches, and packed full of the finest junipers and exciting combinations of Scottish botanicals in our eponymous city centre distillery, Edinburgh Gin delivers superior distilling expertise, with a refreshingly Scottish twist.
CAORUNN GIN Carefully handcrafted in the Scottish Highlands, Caorunn expertly infuses locally foraged botanicals, beautifully mixing the rugged charm of Speyside with urban sophistication. Multi award-winning Caorunn is the only gin made in the acclaimed Speyside region and has rapidly became one of the best-selling craft gins, the number 3 super premium gin in the UK. (Nielsen 2015). Handcrafted in the world’s only working Copper Berry Chamber, Caorunn offers an aromatic, versatile taste that works perfectly in any classic and modern cocktail. In recognition, Caorunn is now proudly served in 12 of the world’s leading bars. Invigorating, dry, crisp and perfectly served with red apple, Caorunn is the Modern London Dry Gin that’s attracting a whole new generation of gin drinkers – generating 65% growth in the UK and 82% globally between 2014 and 2015.
MAKAR GLASGOW GIN Makar Glasgow Gin is the award winning premium handcrafted gin produced by The Glasgow Distillery Company. Launched in November 2014, Makar is the first ever gin to be produced in the city of Glasgow. Distilled in small batches in a copper pot still, named Annie, Makar Glasgow Gin is a luxuriously smooth juniper forward gin entwined with seven other botanicals to a create the perfect balance. The bright and robust flavour of Makar makes it perfect for gin-led cocktails and invigorating with a premium tonic and fine slice of fresh green chilli to garnish. For more information visit www.glasgowdistillery.com MakarGlasgowGin @MakarGlasgowGin
ROCK ROSE GIN Rock Rose Gin gets its name from our first botanical forage along the cliffs of the Pentland Firth, where Rhodiola rosea was introduced to us by a local herbalist. A rose in the rocks! Over a thousand years ago, the Vikings would harvest wild exposed cliffs like these to gather Rhodiola rosea. This was thought to give them the extra strength to continue on their long, arduous journeys. Our gin uses this botanical and a selection of local as well as traditional botanicals to create a unique taste from the Highlands of Scotland.

LAGER - DRAUGHT TENNENTS 2015 was a great year for Scotland’s favourite pint. An annual highlight for Tennent’s Lager every year is T in the Park and this year’s festival saw the introduction of our bespoke bar on-site, The Tennent’s Arm. Ahead of the festival itself, it ran its inaugural At the Heart of T in the Park campaign in outlets across Scotland. This campaign saw T Break bands past and present play special sets, musical bingo nights, ticket hunts and distribution of limited edition At the Heart of T in the Park glassware. The brand has have exciting campaign plans for 2016 as it looks to build and extend the ‘At the Heart of T in the Park’ campaign. 2015 also saw Tennent’s Lager renew its commitment to Scottish football, becoming the proud beer sponsor of the Scotland National team. This includes partnering Scotland for the World Cup qualifying campaign for Russia 2018 and two critical matches against the “Auld Enemy” – England. These are always huge on-trade occasions and Tennent’s will be supporting the trade with promotions to engage fans and help drive sales. Tennent’s is a brand that continues to innovate and it has exciting investment plans for 2016, which it will share with licensees in the New Year.
CARLING Carling lager is now the No. 2 lager in Scotland. As well as a ‘Shirt Amnesty’ for football fans – this national experiential tour allowed football fans to swap their shirts with the name of a recently sold player on the back for a new one. When the van landed in a city, fans could turn up and swap their shirt for free. Towards the end of the year Carling also signed a 14-month sponsorship deal with Dave TV. This gives the brand a spot on television everyday in 2016. The stand-alone collaboration between the beer brand and TV channel is the longest in history.
FOSTER’S Heineken’s Foster’s lager launched its ‘Why the Hell Not?’ campaign in 2015, following the success of its former ‘Good Call’ campaign which featured worry-free Brad and Dan. The new campaign marked a shift from the brand’s previous brand strategy and encouraged consumers to live life to the fullest. The brand also embarked on a television series called ‘Helluva Tour’ which saw four strangers set off on an epic 17,000 mile journey to Australia. The series aired on Channel All 4 and consisted of 10 five-minute long episodes, follows a cast of four strangers as they take the road trip of a lifetime in a Bedford Rascal camper van.
HEINEKEN Heineken’s association with the James Bond films, an 18-year relationship, continued at the end of 2015, when it unveiled a new TV ad featuring Daniel Craig as James Bond, in a high speed boat chase. The ad, thou’ was only part of its integrated global Spectre campaign which also included a digital campaign featuring the world’s first ever selfie from space, dubbed the ‘Spyfie’. The brand also continued its sponsorship of the Rugby World Cup, and also backs the European rugby competition the Heineken Cup.

LICENSING
YOUR LICENCE IS YOUR LIVELIHOOD: TAKE IT SERIOUSLY It is not difficult to be completely at sea when it comes to licensing laws. With so much law being passed in a few short years, it is no embarrassment to admit hardship in keeping up to date. We now have the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005, the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010, the Alcohol etc (Scotland) Act 2010 and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015, most of which will be commenced in 2016. Thankfully, a new Bill put forward by Labour which would have, amongst other things, banned Buckfast, appears to have hit the buffers. Thanks to Stephen McGowan from TLT LLP, who says that if there is one rule to remember, it is take advice from a specialist licensing solicitor as your licence is your livelihood. THE BUCK STOPS WITH YOU You may not realise it but an offence committed by one of your staff could result in your own licence being placed at risk and you can also end up with a criminal record, even if you were not in the premises at the time. A licensing board can revoke or suspend a personal or premises licence following mistakes and breaches by management or staff. As an example, if one of your staff sell alcohol to someone under 18, they can be convicted, the premises manager can be convicted, and the premises licence holder can also be convicted, even if not physically present when the alcohol was sold. Make sure all staff have genuinely undertaken the mandatory 2 hours training. Do not pay lip service to this requirement. LSOs raise concerns all the time about staff training being poorly delivered, or worse, records being signed off when no real training has been delivered. Don’t risk it. All staff must have appropriate training before their first shift. At the end of the day the responsibility is at the feet of the licence holder – the buck stops with you. This includes making sure your staff understand the specific licence terms that apply to the premises they work

in. Staff should know what is and is not allowed and this can vary from premises to premises. Staff should be re-trained on important items on a regular basis and this should be recorded. Fundamental points such as: . Challenge 25 . The premises licensed hours . Banned promotions . Refusing service where appropriate ie to someone who is drunk should all be known by everyone, not just management. Keeping decent records of all ongoing staff training is a must. If something goes wrong and you end up before a licensing hearing, or in a meeting with the police, then having evidence that you have taken all reasonable steps to stop problems from arising can only be a good thing. Although the law only requires a staff member to be trained once, a responsible licence holder will make sure the staff training is delivered properly on an ongoing basis and that proper records are kept. LSOs are entitled to ask for and review your staff training records and they often do. Don’t underestimate this. If your staff training records are not correct, the LSO might fairly think – “what else is wrong?” The training can be delivered by someone with a personal licence but ideally it should be someone who is not just a personal licence holder
LICENSING but who is half decent at delivering the training. The hospitality sector can have a high turnover of staff. You will take new people on all the time. Any time you take someone new on, the best bet is to retrain them with the 2 hour course before the start their first shift. Although previous training is transferrable to a new workplace, why risk it? How do you know that the training was properly delivered? You need to have confidence in your own staff because ultimately if they make mistakes then you are the one responsible and you can be convicted if an offence occurs. AGE VERIFICATION: HAVE A PROPER POLICY Most people now recognise the phrase “Challenge 25”. The legal age for consumption of alcohol is still 18 but your licence now has a condition that requires you to verify the age of anyone who looks under 25. Although there is no specific requirement to have this policy in writing, it is sensible to have it down on paper. How else can you prove that you have one? There are a number of forms of acceptable ID including a European Photo Driver’s Licence, UK Passport and Pass Card. A number of additional forms of ID are now alsoe acceptable including most EU national identity cards, biometric immigration documents, and military ID. However, whilst staff can familiarise themselves with all of these documents by looking at www.challenge25.com, in my experience it is safer to refuse a sale unless you are 100% sure that the ID is genuine, and if you don’t know what a military ID looks like how can you know it is real? Whilst refusal can be awkward and embarrassing for customers and perhaps staff, this is preferable to you ending up with a criminal record – so don’t risk it. MANAGER CHANGES? DON’T MESS AROUND Every premises has a named Designated Premises
Manager (DPM). This is the person whose name appears on the licence and is expected to be the day to day manager of that premises. A person can only be a DPM on one licence at a time. If you know the manager is to leave, for what ever reason, then you must remember to advise the licensing board within 7 days. This activates a grace period of 6 weeks for you to lodge an application naming a new manager. Remember that the new manager must hold a personal licence, and that he or she cannot be named on another licence. This is incredibly important. If you miss the 7 day notice, or separately if you miss the 6 week deadline to name the new manager, then the police can come calling and ask you to shut – it is unlawful to sell alcohol if the 7 days or 6 weeks deadlines are missed. Most local police and LSOs are pretty clued up as to who is named as a manager on which licence so don’t underestimate this point. Not only might you have to close for a short period until a new manager is named, ultimately the premises licence could be subject to a review. A DPM does not need to be on the premises at all times. There is a general expectation that the person named should have day to day control of the premises but there is no legal requirement for that person to be physically present. That being said, as the police and LSOs will expect the named manager to have control of staff it is sensible to have someone named who is genuinely on or around the premises on a frequent basis. WHAT YOU MUST DISPLAY IN YOUR PREMISES In addition to your weights and measures and smoking notices, you have a legal duty to display certain licensing notices too. The premises licence itself can be quite a large document, with the main licence encompassing the layout plan and the operating plan, and a separate licence “summary”. It is the separate, smaller summary document which has to be displayed prominently so it can be viewed by the
SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2016 37
LICENSING public – not necessarily just behind the bar if it cannot be read from there. The summary is usually one or two pages long and it is an offence not to have it displayed properly so make sure you’ve got this covered. The main licence, which is normally a document that could be 10 – 20 pages long and sometimes more, does not need to be displayed but it does need to kept on the premises in a safe place where it can be accessed by staff both for training purposes but also because a police officer or LSO are entitled to see it upon request. The main licence should either be the principal (original) copy, or a photocopy which has been certified by a solicitor as a true copy. It is good practice to keep a certified copy on the premises and the original in a safe place as it has to be returned to the board if any applications were made such as a change of manager. If the licence is lost or stolen, it should be reported to the police in order to get a reference number, and a duplicate requested from the licensing board, which normally attracts a small fee. In addition to displaying the summary of the licence, you must also display a notice referred to as the “Section 110” notice which details age related offences and confirms the position that alcohol will not be sold unless verification has occurred. In addition to this, if your premises allows under 18s, then a separate notice should also be on display indicating which parts of the premises under 18s have access to. There is no legal obligation to display notices or signs concerning Challenge 25, but it is no bad thing. In addition, you may also wish to display notices concerning the use of external areas and smoking areas asking customers to respect neighbours. ALCOHOL PROMOTIONS, ADVERTISING AND DISPLAYS – DO’s AND DON’TS Although there is nothing inherently illegal about a promotion of alcohol, the 2005 Act has created a list of types of promotions which are deemed to be irresponsible and
38
SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2016
therefore unlawful. The interpretation of these definitions can lead to local variances so that what might be considered by LSOs in one area, might not in another. Operators should always take specialist legal advice before running any promotions. . Types of banned promotions include: . Promotions likely to appeal to under 18s . Buy 1 get 1 free, and similar deals . “Upselling” of measures – for example an offer to “Make it a double” for an extra 50p . Unlimited alcohol for a fixed price . Promotions which encourage people to drink more than they had perhaps intended, eg “Buy two glasses of wine and get the rest of the bottle for £5” . Alcohol as a prize, unless in a sealed container for off consumption – so watch those pub quiz prizes: no round of drinks or bar vouchers please A separate rule, often confused with the rules on promotions, is the so-called “72 hour” rule which refers to the price of products. The price of alcohol product cannot be varied up or down within a 72 hour window. So if a pint is £3 on Monday, it must remain at £3 on Tuesday on Wednesday and can only be changed on the Thursday morning. If the price rises to £3.50 on Thursday, then it must stay at £3.50 for at least Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and so on. In shops and supermarkets, there are special rules about alcohol display areas and advertising. Most shops will have two areas: an area accessible to the public such as shelving in an aisle, and an inaccessible area such as a spirits display behind the counter. Alcohol advertising can only be located in one of these defined areas, so you should not have posters, vinyls or A-boards at a shop entrance unless it is part of the approved area. Alcohol cannot be displayed other than in one of these two defined areas. The area will be shown on the licence layout plan and cannot be changed without approval from the licensing board. There are special rules on mixing displays of alcohol and non-alcohol goods.
LICENSING Restrictions even apply outwith the premises - drinks promotions cannot be advertised within 200 metres from the boundary of the premises although this only applies to promotions “in connection” with the premises, so would not stop, for example, an advert on a bus shelter or a passing brewery van. SPECIAL EVENTS Premises can apply for one off extensions for local events. The treatment of these applications varies greatly across Scotland but the key aspect in each case is timing. Most licensing boards require applications to be lodged within a certain timescale, which can be anything from 6 weeks to 2 weeks before the event. Always check with your local board. An application for an event is likely to met with less favour if the “event” is not particularly special – asking for extra trading for Mrs McGlumpher’s 55th birthday is less likely to achieve success than, say, extra trading for a local festival or gala day. You should always check with your local board. In some areas, certain times of the year are treated as “general extensions” meaning you don’t need to apply. In most board areas this would include the festive season, although not all, and note that in most cases special wording would need to be in your main licence under “seasonal variations” to activate these hours. You can also host a licensed event on unlicensed premises by applying for an occasional licence but again the rules about the nature of the event and the timing of the application should be considered and specialist advice taken. PERSONAL LICENCES AND TRAINING Having a personal licence allows you to be named as a DPM, allows you to lodge occasional licence applications, and allows you to supervise/authorise staff making sales of alcohol and conduct the mandatory staff training. Obtaining a personal licence is relatively
straightforward following obtaining an appropriate training certificate from the BIIAB or other awarding body. The application form must be signed by the individual (not a solicitor) and lodged with certified passport photos. If the applicant is free of convictions, it is relatively assured that a licence will be issued – but note that the presence of convictions does not of itself mean a refusal. It will come to the context and detail of the convictions. A personal licence lasts for 10 years and is portable between board areas, although cannot be used in England & Wales. You should apply to the board where you live rather than where you work. There is also a requirement to undertake and pass a half day refresher course within 5 years of the anniversary of the issue of the personal licence, with the updated training certificate being presented to the licensing no later than 3 months thereafter. The refresher training requirement was missed by thousands of people across Scotland who lost their licence. Thankfully, the Scottish Government has now amended the law so that if you do lose your licence because of this, the original 5 year ban on reapplying has been removed. RELATIONS WITH POLICE AND LSOs It is incredibly important that the licensed trade work to have a positive, respectful relationship with police officers and LSOs. Remember that police and LSOs can enter and inspect your premises at any time and have the right to ask for documentation such as the premises licence or personal licences or staff, or to see staff training records. Despite recent tensions between the licensed trade and Police Scotland, my advice is always to contact the police if there has been an incident on your premises. Keep an incident book and record any issues. Co-operate with the Police and build positive relations with your local officers as well as licensing officers.

Premium Packaged Lagers
TSINGTAO Tsingtao (pronounced Ching Dow) is the world’s second largest beer brand by volume and is known universally as the Chinese phrase for beer. A genuine imported lager, Tsingtao Beer was founded in 1903 by German settlers in Quingdao, also known as ‘beer town’, in China. Tsingtao is still made using the same unique process, with spring water from the Laoshan Mountains, hops from Western China and native rice, which gives the beer its clean, crisp taste. Tsingtao is enjoyed on its own, as a drinking occasion, or with food. Its palette-cleansing qualities make it particularly suited as an accompaniment to spicy dishes. The brand has gone from strength in the UK with an energetic multi-channeled marketing campaign spanning food, sport and fashion. 2016 is set to be another exciting year, commencing with significant activity around Chinese New Year in February, then the start of the brand’s fourth year sponsoring a team in the British Superbike Series and the (lucky) eighth year of its international food campaign, Legacy of Taste. www.tsingtaobeer.co.uk
ALAHAMBRA Alhambra is regarded as the leading craft brewery in Spain and it has been getting ever more popular in the UK too. This could be because Alhambra on draught has low carbonation which make it particulary suited to food led outlets. The brand is distributed by Morgenrot in the UK, and its marketing emphasises the brands traditional brewing methods, which involves a slow, natural fermentation over periods of up to 39 days. The Alhambra brewery was founded in Granada in 1925 and is named after the city’s magnificent Alhambra Palace. All the Alhambra brand beers are made with no additives. Furthermore, the water used is still drawn from the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
BIRRA MORETTI Birra Moretti unveiled new packaging last summer, a matt circular label and the colours of the Italian flag, which emphasised the brand’s Italian heritage. The brand, which has been performing well in the World Beer category, seeing a value increase of 29.7% and a volume increase of nearly 30%, also took its Birra Moretti Gran Tour to Edinburgh. The Moretti Gran Tour took place at Summerhall and the pop-up food festival emphasised how well Birra Moretti complemented Italian food. In the past Birra Moretti has been involved with Street Feast, Urban Food Festival, Big Feastival, Pizza in the Piazza and Model Market but this year for the first time it introduced master classes where you could taste great food, and make it.
ESTRELLA DAMM Estrella Damm got a make-over at the tail-end of 2015 and emerged in a darker glass bottle. But this was not just an aesthetic makeover; there was science behind the redesign. The new darker glass used gives the beer 30% more protection from light exposure. This means the bottle will travel and store better and conserve that perfect Mediterranean taste Estrella Damm is famed for. Charles Wells, which imports Estrella Damm to the UK, is the custodian of one of the UK’s fastest-growing premium world lagers. You can keep up to date with Estrella Damm news and get involved in the #EstrellaLife at EstrellaDammUK or on @EstrellaDammUK

RUM THE KRAKEN The Kraken is imported rum from the Caribbean blended with a secret recipe of 14 spices. Named for the Sea Beast of myth and legend, The Kraken Rum is bold, rich, black and smooth. The Kraken tastes great as a shot, on the rocks or with mixer. Last December, The Kraken has burst from the realm of myth into the living world - and in to your living room – with a six figure TV and online advertising campaign featuring the eponymous, epically proportioned Kraken destroying a ship in jaw droppingly photo-realistic definition. The spot was produced by New York based agency Dead As We Know It (DAWKI). The brand, distributed by Proximo Spirits UK, launched in the UK 4 years ago and is the UK’s fastestgrowing spiced rum brand.
OLD J SPICED RUM In 1740 Admiral Edward Vernon enforced a reduction in the strength of the British Navy´s rum ration. When his men complained, Vernon suggested the addition of limes and sugar to make the drink more enjoyable. “Old J” has been created in honour of this unlikely mixologist who was known as “Old Grog”. “Old J” however brings Vernon´s concept into the 21st Century by using the finest Caribbean Rum combined with it’s Secret Blend of Spices, Sugar, Vanilla and Persian Lime.
CAPTAIN MORGAN’S Captain Morgan’s is currently the No. 1 rum in the UK on trade. In 2015, the rum category was worth £525m, while Morgan’s alone was worth £111m. The brand’s Spiced Gold version has driven the growth of golden rum, and it’s expected that Morgan’s White, which launched in 2015, will do the same for the white rum category in 2016. Captain Morgan® White Rum has also been chosen as the official white rum partner at all Deltic Group nightclubs. The partnership will also see the brand link up with Deltic on all of the new ‘Epik Presents’ student nights taking place throughout the year at the group’s venues across the UK.
RON ZACAPA Last year proved an adventurous year for Diageo’s Ron Zacapa, following the launch of its packaging make-over for variants 23 and XO. The redesign stood out on the shelves of bars and pubs across the UK, and made both products newly distinguishable for licensees and consumers alike. 2015 also saw the brand unveil its annual limited edition bottle, Reserva Limitada, made from sugar canes from the Guatemalan lowlands. In the past year, premium rum has experienced a volume and value increase of 12.6%.

SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2016 59
SOFT DRINKS BRITVIC The soft drinks category is becoming more and more important to the pub trade. In licensed outlets soft drinks are the third most valuable beverage (larger than wine and champagne). Soft drinks also tap into several key consumer trends – such as wanting to stand out from the crowd and seeking original flavours, authenticity and health credentials from their soft drink choices. Soft drinks are no longer just for the ‘designated driver’. Supplementing your soft drinks range with more premium adult soft drinks, including a selection of innovative flavours, will ensure that non-drinkers don’t feel like they are ‘missing out’ and will allow them to still take part in a round of drinks with friends. Just as with alcohol, you can enhance and personalise the premium soft drink experience and deliver better value and taste perception by serving them in branded glassware with ice and the correct garnish. There’s a huge opportunity to capture the attention of your customers by showcasing soft drinks as an exciting and positive alternative to alcoholic drinks and inviting them to step into a more sophisticated adult soft drink space. Over the next year, Britvic will be bringing you category advice with its new ‘Pour More Flavour, Pour More Sales’ initiative to help you inspire your customers to choose soft drinks on more occasions.
COCA-COLA Coca-Cola is probably one of the most well-known soft drink brands in the world. Last year it continued its ‘Designated Driver’ campaign in the UK, promoting the already popular brand even further. The campaign aimed to encourage consumers not to drink alcohol by rewarding them with a free Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Life, Coca-Cola Zero, Diet Coke, or the new Schweppes Sparkling Juice Drinks and Appletiser. The latter celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015.
LIPTON ICE TEA You’ve been able to enjoy Iced Tea from Lipton in convenience stores but now you will also be able to offer it as a non-alcoholic alternative to your customers due to its launch in the on-trade late last year. The brands core audience are 18-34 year olds, and it has an eye-catching new jam jar serve, which increases its relevance in bars. The on-trade launch has also been backed by a consumer campaign. ”
QCUMBER 2015 saw the introduction of Qcumber, a new blend made from 100% natural ingredients, including carbonated spring water, natural cucumber extract, beet sugar and citric acid. Since hitting the on-trade last year, the new soft drink has undergone a huge sampling campaign in order to build awareness of the product. Available in a 200ml crown-cap bottle, the owners hope that this refreshing new addition will be an ideal mixer for gin or vodka throughout 2016.

WHISKY - MALTS TAMDHU Tamdhu Distillery was established in 1897 by a consortium of pioneering businessmen embodying the ‘Can-Dhu’ spirit of their generation. Inspired by an age of industry and endeavour, the Tamdhu story is one of enlightenment that began, and continues to this day, on the banks of the River Spey. Today, just as then, Tamdhu is matured exclusively in the finest sherry oak casks, with natural Speyside water from the Tamdhu spring. This timehonoured process results in two unique drams, the Tamdhu 10 Year Old and Batch Strength expressions. The 10 Year Old offers initial notes of vanilla and sugared almonds, balanced by fresh oak and cinnamon. The palate then bursts with fruit and spice, with a gentle richness of toffee and sherry oak, before finishing with a touch of fresh fruit - slowly unveiling the wisp of peat smoke. The Batch Strength is beautifully fragrant with red berries on the nose with hints of walnuts, delicate citrus and creamy vanilla. Intense richness rounded with spice, sherry and dried fruit intices the palate before the finish matures into biscuit, malt and marmalade with a lingering fruitiness.
LAPHROAIG Last year this Islay malt celebrated its 200th anniversary and to mark the occasion Islay hosted the annual Laphroaig Live which was broadcast live on the web. The Beam Suntory brand invited people tune in from all over the world to see Distillery Manager John Campbell, and former distillery managers, taste four special expressions: The one-off Laphroaig 15 Year Old – the official 200th Expression; Laphroaig Cairdeas 2015 - distilled using only the original small stills; Laphroaig 21 YO – created for the Friends of Laphroaig 21st Birthday; and a ‘unique’ Laphroaig 32 YO - 100% sherry matured, a very rare, special expression.
THE ARDMORE PORT WOOD The Ardmore Port Wood Finish is a new expression from Ardmore. It is distilled with the same traditional methods used at the distillery since 1898, before being double-cask matured for 12 years in traditional American white oak exbourbon barrels and then finished in European half port pipes. The release of The Ardmore Port Wood Finish follows the success of The Ardmore Legacy, which replaced Ardmore Traditional Cask as the distillery’s core expression. A lightly peated, sweet dram, The Ardmore Legacy offers the ideal introduction to peated single malts. It is distributed by Maxxium UK.
GLENFIDDICH ‘THE ORIGINAL’ Wm Grants revealed its Glenfiddich ‘The Original’ to a Scottish audience towards the end of last year. The Original is a limited edition expression recreating the 1963 Glenfiddich Single Malt recipe that Sandy Grant Gordon took to the world, which effectively created the single malt category as it is known today. It launched earlier in the year in the US and Australia and first appeared at Goodwood in the late summer at The Original Club at Goodwood Revival – the ultimate 1963 experience modelled after some of the most exclusive private member’s clubs of the time. Brian Kinsman, Master Blender revealed that he drew on Glenfiddich’s collection of rare and aged single malts to replicate the original Glenfiddich Straight Malt. SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2016 71

WHISKY - MALTS GLENGOYNE
Glengoyne Distillery is highly regarded as Scotland’s most beautiful distillery. Glengoyne, being uncompromising in its pursuit of excellence, runs its stills slower than any other distillery in order to create the complex, sweet flavours for which it is known. Glengoyne’s spirit is then matured in the finest oak casks from within the traditional, dunnage warehouses to create the collection of seven distinct expressions, from the fresh 10 Year Old, the tropical 12 Year Old and the perfectly balanced 15 Year Old, to the fruity 18 Year Old, rich 21 Year Old, beautiful, amber 25 Year Old and sweet and spicy Cask Strength.
BENROMACH Benromach Distillery’s 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky won a hat trick of awards at a number of international spirit competitions in 2015. The distillery’s flagship malt received accolades of ‘Big Gold’ and Spirit of the Year at the 2015 International Spirit Awards in Germany as well as being awarded a gold medal at the Scotch Whisky Masters competition. The whisky which is handcrafted by three distillers also won a gold medal in March at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Last year the company also released two new limited edition Benromach Wood Finishes: Sassicaia and Hermitage and at the end of 2015 launched its ‘The Wood Makes the Whisky’ campaign.
BEN NEVIS Ben Nevis Distillery, owned by the Nikka Whisky Distilling Company, is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is nestled at the foot of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, which has a summit elevation of 4’406 feet above sea level. This imposing mountain provides an impressive background to a traditional Scottish craft and Ben Nevis 10 Year old is is the entry level single malt whisky from the distillery. But the distillery produces a range of ‘blended whiskies and a range of malts too.
THE ARRAN MALT Sales of The Arran Malt helped brand owners, Isle of Arran Distillers, post record results to the end of 2014. Turnover rose by 21% and net profit increased by 51% – the best performance posted since the business started in 1995. The uplift in sales came at the same time as a repackaging exercise for The Arran Malt range which saw its packaging receive a makeover inspired by its location. The four key expressions of the Arran Malt have utilised the colours from the island’s dramatic landscape to illustrate each of the new bottles. Boss Euan Mitchell says, “Independent brands such as ours is surging and we are not even scratching the surface in global terms.” SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2016 73

Delivering fresh fruit and vegetables, the company prides itself on the fact that the majority of the business is referrals and they don’t employ any reps. Central Produce always delivers a very personal service with most clients getting through to a member of staff rather than a voicemail, a huge part of their service and the team all feel this is very important. The company is basically run by family members and a few select staff with a wealth of experience within the trade.Unlike a lot of the bigger wholesalers, they do not stockpile goods, choosing to keep everything fresh on a daily basis where possible.
