Working Successfully as Team

To complete this assessment successfully, you are expected to work together collegiality, using the timetabled team meeting slot effectively throughout the course of the semester. You are asked to adhere to the following guidelines to ensure that each member of the team contributes fully to the given task, and that individual contributions to the assessment are fully recorded in this logbook. Guidelines: •

Each team should appoint a project manager who is the principal point of contact with the module tutor.

Each team meeting should have an agenda and be formally minuted, with attendance and absences clearly noted.

You are required to hold regular meetings during the course of the semester.

Action points for individual team members should be made at each meeting, and then subsequently monitored and updated.

The team is asked to reflect on the overall health of the team performance at each meeting. If the health of the team drops below 7 then the project manager is advised to contact the module tutor as a matter of priority. Any issues regarding team performance must be supported by evidence from the completed logs.

Anybody not contributing fully to the assessment process, as evidenced by the completed logs, will be asked to attend a meeting with the module tutor to explain their lack of engagement. Individual effort and contribution will be reflected in the peer assessment that you will be asked to complete, the process of which is documented in this document.

The satisfactory completion of team meetings and the recording of action points is a required part of the assessment process and I ask that you take this task seriously and complete it in a conscientious and appropriate manner, as it is designed to ensure effective team working, which is in your own interests.

Peer Assessment

As part of the assessment for this module you will be asked to complete a peer assessment at selected points during the module. The module tutor will provide details on the frequency of peer assessment and provide you with the necessary paperwork. This is how it works: 1. You will be asked to list the names of your team in a similar table to that shown overleaf. 2. Individually, and anonymously, you will then allocate points to each member of the team, including yourself, against each assessment criteria, using the following grading scheme, (where average refers to the average contribution of members of your team to that particular process). • 1 - minimal • 2 - below average • 3 - average • 4 - above average • 5 - outstanding 3. You are encouraged to use the range of points at your disposal within each category and avoid the tendency to give everyone a similar score. Your scores must be based on the critical reflection of each other’s contribution and not merely a pact whereby you give each other maximum scores. If the module tutors feels the scores are not reflective of the evidence recorded in the logs then you will be asked to repeat the peer assessment process. 4. You are allowed to assess yourself but you are asked to do so honestly. 5. You will also have the opportunity to provide some commentary to provide a rationale for your chosen scores. 6. The module tutor will then collate this information and sum the number of points allocated to each person and then calculate the overall number of points that have been given to your team. From this an individual grade will be calculated from the team score using an individual weighting factor (see overleaf). 7. If more than one peer assessment point is adopted on the module then the average weighting factor will be used to determine the individual grade.

(49)

The individual weighting factor is then calculated from the formula: Individual weighting factor = individual rating / average rating Average weighting = (42+62+49)/3 = 51 •

Laura’s weighting = 42/51 = 0.82

Sara’s weighting = 62/51 = 1.22

David’s weighting = 49/51 = 0.96

Group Project Mark = 65% •

Laura’s grade = 65*0.82 = 53%

Sara’s grade = 65*1.22 = 79%

David’s grade = 65*0.96 = 62%

NB: The module tutor retains the right to amend the scaling factor if the deviations from the group mark are not reflective of the evidence provided in the group log. For positive scores (i.e. over 1) individual weighting factors will be capped to 1.10 (i.e. +10) but will not capped for scores under 1 therefore meaning a team member can fail the peer assessment component). p. 53
