MISSION

To raise the artistic, storytelling and educational value of on-location drawing, promoting its practice and connecting people around the world who draw on location where they live and travel.

MANIFESTO

We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.

Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.

Our drawings are a record of time and place.

We are truthful to the scenes we witness.

We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.

We support each other and draw together.

We share our drawings online. We show the world, one drawing at a time.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello Urban Sketchers. 2023 has been a remarkable year of growth and creativity for Urban Sketchers. We have welcomed new chapters, expanding our global family. Our volunteers have been instrumental in this expansion, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to our mission of promoting on-location drawing and connecting artists worldwide.

This year, we saw the return of the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Auckland, New Zealand, after a three-year hiatus. The event was a resounding success, featuring workshops, demos, and lectures designed to inspire and educate our community. We also held our first-ever Instructor Retreat, providing a vital platform for our educators to connect and share insights.

Our education programs continued to flourish. The USk Reportage Grants supported visual storytellers in capturing compelling local narratives, while our workshops empowered artists and educators globally. We also laid the groundwork for the USk Youth Initiative, aiming to nurture the next generation of urban sketchers.

The Regional Grant Program funded significant events across four continents, fostering stronger regional sketching communities and providing accessible alternatives to international travel.

In communications, our social media presence grew significantly, and our redesigned website became a central hub for our community. The quarterly zine, DrawingAttention, showcased inspiring artwork and stories from around the world.

Financially, we have maintained a stable footing thanks to our generous sponsors and donors. Their support has been crucial in enabling us to continue our programs and initiatives.

As we look forward to 2024, we were excited to announce that the 12th Urban Sketchers International Symposium will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We anticipate another year of artistic growth, community building, and inspiring on-location drawing.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to Urban Sketchers. Together, we are making the world a more connected and creatively vibrant place, one drawing at a time.

CHAPTERS

A total of 60 new applying groups were added onto the global family of official USk Chapters, bringing the world total number of cities with an official chapter to 437.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES / TOOLS

The USk Chapter Handbook was completed and distributed on June 16 after over a year of work, with an English version and 14 translations on Club Express. It’s been well-received, with numerous Chapter Admins expressing appreciation; many have found it comprehensively informative and very helpful.

Hot on the heels of the Chapter Handbook, the Membership Team also completed the Prospective Chapters’ Handbook, a shorter and amended version of the Chapter Handbook, geared for helping prospective groups know how to become a part of the official USk global family. It is now available on the USk Website.

COMMUNITY BUILDING (ACTIVITIES AND TEAM GROWTH)

In 2023, events such as the Global Admin Conference (GAC), Global Admin Touchpoint, and lectures on “How to Dynamize Your USk Chapter” inspired many admins and regional coordinators. These events were well-attended and positively received.

The GAC was conducted virtually on December 3, 2023, across three time slots to accommodate admins worldwide. Over 60 admins attended, engaging with important updates from the EB and Membership Team. The sessions featured robust interactions, with many insightful questions addressed during and after the meeting. New Regional Coordinators also gained valuable experience assisting with the backend tech and overall organization of the GAC.

The interactive lecture “How to Dynamize Your USk Chapter” and the Global Admin Touchpoint were held during the

Auckland Symposium in April, the EB strategic planning meeting in Strasbourg, France, in September, and the Asia Link Sketchwalk in Suwon, South Korea, in October. Pat delivered these sessions to many chapter admins, providing Q&A opportunities. Each session was well-attended and positively received, inspiring many admins to enhance their roles.

COMMUNITY STORY

Numbers alone can’t capture the impact of USk’s global work, but stories can. This milestone photo marks USk Pune’s 400th sketchwalk since their founding in 2015. Inspired by the 2015 USk Symposium in Singapore, Sanjeev Joshi established USk Pune, which has grown impressively, now boasting larger regular turnouts than USk Singapore. They excel in organizing national events, and their lead admin also contributes as a Regional Coordinator. Urban sketching is rapidly gaining popularity across India.

EDUCATION & EVENTS

2023 was a great year for USk Education. After a three-year pause we saw the return of Urban Sketchers Symposiums–the signature international gathering of artists who draw on location. The 11th Symposium took place in Auckland, New Zealand. Nineteen international urban sketching instructors have presented workshops on a range of topics from sketching techniques, to reportage, to architectural drawing and perspective.

INSTRUCTOR RETREAT, AUCKLAND 2023

In addition to workshops and demos the participants of the symposium had a chance to hear from the fellow sketchers on topics such as History of Reportage, Storytelling through Drawing, a Retrospective Look at the Urban Sketching movement, Ganapati Festival Celebration in Sketches, Urban Sketching Outreach and Community partnerships, Sketching while Walking (the Camino de Santiago) and others. These lectures are available for free to our community on USk Youtube channel.

INSTRUCTOR RETREAT

In Auckland we also held our first ever Instructor Retreat. Under the leadership of the Education director Rita Sabler, former Education Director Mario Linhares and the founder of USk Gabi Campanario, 18 instructors selected to teach at the symposium met for a daylong instructor retreat in Auckland, New Zealand on April 18th 2023. The retreat provided a vital point of connection with our community of instructors, allowed us to exchange teaching tips, and gave us the opportunity to develop ideas on how to move forward with some of our long standing and new education initiatives.

After introductions and ice breaker activity we got to work in small groups. One Education committee member was responsible for moderating each of the topics below at a small round table. Moderators introduced the context, presented some challenges and solicited input from a small group.

Small groups were rotating from table to table in order to be able to provide their input on all five topics.

The main topics of discussion included Future of USK Education; 10x10 Local Workshops; How to grow and train a new pool of USK Instructors; How to grow our Workshop Program, and How to strengthen and expand our Symposiums’ education offerings.

USk WORKSHOPS

In 2023 USk Chapters and Instructors ran official Urban Sketchers workshops in Oslo, Barcelona and Tel-Aviv. The USk Workshop Program is designed to empower educators around the world and offers global exposure for inspirational artists and mentors. Apply via the website for 2024/2025. Some graphics of the workshops can be found on the website.

USk YOUTH INITIATIVE

During 2023 the Education committee laid down the important groundwork for stimulating educational efforts directed at young urban sketchers (5 - 21 years old). USk is working on launching a program that would provide individual educators and local organizations (such as schools, libraries, after-school youth programs) with grants to offset the cost of resources and time needed to conduct programs designed specifically for young urban sketchers. Eligible projects can be a single educational event or a program that takes place over several months.

USk REPORTAGE GRANTS

We felt it was imperative to continue fostering the storytelling potential with a project-driven grant program. Reportage grant program distributes microgrants to visual storytellers, but more importantly gives aspiring artist-reporters a platform to showcase their projects dedicated to telling stories about their local communities, traditions, current social issues, etc. The grant also started to build a library of reportage projects that could serve as inspiration for others to go deeper than just a postcard sketch of a landmark or a landscape. By combining writing and drawing sketchers were asked to look for answers, talk to their subjects, conduct research, and think about what they want to say with their work.

In 2023 the panel of nine judges reviewed 88 proposals that dared to dream big. The response to the USk Reportage Grant surpassed all expectations, leaving us in awe of the creativity and passion that flow within our community.

This year’s stories took us inside the French Parliament (Marielle Durand), provided a visual account of the war 20 years after the invasion of Iraq (Matthew Gibbons), detailed life and work on a Coast Guard ship in the Canadian Arctic (Émilie Goulet), and guided you along the ancient pilgrimage route in Southern Italy (Amanda Roelle), among others.

See the 2023 winning projects on our website and in the June 2024 issue of Drawing Attention. The Urban Sketchers’ Reportage Grant program will continue in 2024 with the call for proposals open through 20 July 2024.

USk EDUCATION BATON HANDOVER

In December 2023, after four years of incredible service to USk Education, Rita Sabler handed over the role of Education Director to Annette Morris. In December 2023, the Education Committee began the process of assessing workshop proposals for the 2024 Symposium and outlining grants and other projects for USk Education in 2024.

EVENTS

A word to encapsulate the Events program of 2023 is: “Busy!” 2023 started off busy with the returning Regional Events Grant funding program for the second season. Five additional chapters received funding and delivered successful regional events.

Concurrently planned after a three-year hiatus, 2023 welcomed the return of the 11th International USk Symposium in Auckland, New Zealand from 19-22 April. Eric Ngan wore ‘two hats’ as Events Director and Local Host making for a very busy first-time experience. For the majority of the Executive Board, this was their first symposium planning experience as well.

USK REGIONAL GRANT PROGRAM

Season two of the Regional Events Grant funding program was successfully delivered in 2023.

The Objectives of the Regional Events Grant Program were to:

• Equip and assist USk Chapters in hosting larger events beyond their regular sketch outings.

• Build a stronger regional sketching community.

• Empower Chapters to organize and introduce new event formats and activities.

• Utilize Urban Sketching to engage communities beyond USk.

• Provide a more accessible and sustainable alternative to international travel for participants unable to attend the USk Symposium.

In 2023, ten proposals were received and meticulously assessed by Genine Carvalheira, Patrick Ng, Eric Ngan, and committee volunteer Janice Ng. Out of a total budget of $10,000 USD, five regional events received funding of $2,000 USD each to support their programs. This financial support was complemented by advice and guidance from respective USk Board members specializing in Sponsorship, Treasury, Education, Communication, and Events.

The selected events were strategically located across four continents, spanning seven months on the calendar. The 2023 season was officially launched via Instagram Live, featuring Eric Ngan interviewing 2022 recipient Donald Saluling from USk Indonesia (see below).

STRASBOURG COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS AND TALKS

During our in-person executive board meeting from September 8-10 in Strasbourg, we had a chance to give a series of workshops, presentations, and sketchwalks with sketchers from the region. It was wonderful to be able to

help contribute to the local chapter, while also getting some important work done, advancing the strategic planning for the organization and planning the next international symposium that will take place in Buenos Aires.

SYMPOSIUM

The USk International Symposium is an annual educational event to celebrate and practice the art of on-location sketching in the host city. The 11th International Urban Sketchers Symposium took place in Auckland, New Zealand from 19-22 April 2023 and was hosted by the USk Auckland Chapter.

The local team aimed to deliver an exceptional symposium while incorporating New Zealand’s cultural identity, particularly the indigenous Maori culture of Aotearoa. Maori language words and phrases, with translations, were integrated throughout the program. The symposium adopted a Maori proverb, as a commentary of many people working collectively to achieve a goal.

Symposium Education & Programming

The 11th USk Symposium welcomed 444 participants, with 70% attending for the first time. Participants and instructors represented 30 countries.

Preceding the Symposium, two programs were delivered:

1. Instructors’ Retreat: A workshop and sharing session to enhance the experience and interaction between Instructors.

2. The Faculty tour was a day to remember. In preparation, the faculty had to learn two Maori songs on the bus ride to Papakura Marae. Tribal leader Tony Kake provided the context for a captivating powhiri [traditional welcome] to tribal grounds and into the ornate meeting house. Introductory speeches and traditional hongi [nose press greeting] culminated with a shared lunch and time available to sketch the intricate wood carvings.

Cultural performances were also featured at the Opening and Closing Receptions. Watch the video here

Symposium Program

The Symposium booklet showcases the comprehensive program (Workshops, Demos, Lectures, Skit Sketch) offered to participants. A total of 19 workshops, 21 demos and sketchwalks took place in the three days of the symposium. Participants acquired fresh skills at workshops, absorbed techniques by viewing demos, and heard about different concepts, from a range of experienced presenters. Besides, there were lectures covering a range of topics. The art market, featuring sponsor booths, was a popular and well-attended attraction, open to both symposium participants and the public. There was also a Silent Auction, a Raffle Draw, and daily Drink and Draw sessions.

At the symposium, ten scholarships were awarded to individuals who might face financial challenges, such as students, as well as those recognized by the Local Organizing Committee for their significant contributions to the local chapter. See the video here.

The talented and passionate team of symposium correspondents captured the essence of the events through their detailed sketches and insightful commentary which offered the viewer a unique perspective of the symposium. For a closer look, visit this link .

The Symposium at this scale would not have been possible without the invaluable support of 75 dedicated volunteers.

Each day, around 30 to 35 volunteers took on various roles, including preparing goodie bags, managing registration, staffing the information desk, assisting with venue preparation and sponsor support, overseeing clean-up, and aiding in workshops. Their efforts were instrumental in making the symposium a remarkable experience for all participants.

EB-AB dinner and EB Strategic Meeting

The opportunity to meet in person is very welcome and this grouping of the Executive Board (EB) and Advisory Board (AB) would only ever be possible at a Symposium. Additionally, the EB held a strategic in-person meeting immediately after the symposium.

COMMUNICATIONS

To all our readers and viewers, thank you. A shout-out goes to all our new followers in 2023: 2,287 on Facebook, 8,799 on Instagram, and 1,789 on YouTube! In 2023 – although algorithms have made it more challenging not only for USk content to be seen but for the discovery and sharing of upcoming and less established members of our community – our numbers across our platforms remarkably have continued to grow.

Based on individual behavior and preferences over time, it can lead us to see a bubble of content that confirms our own existing interests. Also, hashtags don’t always show the latest, so it is important to tag your local and regional chapters.

This means that our passionate social media team, composed of volunteers who manage different regions and time zones, work extra hard to make sure that we have a diverse dose of inspiration, representing sketchers and sketches from all over the world.

With Regional Events and the chapters championing the events take-over our Instagram channel, there is a variety of voices and storytelling. As it gets more challenging to find sketchers with our algorithm battle, there’s another wonderful way to find inspiration and be found!

SPONSORSHIP

2023 was a year of change. The WHO finally declared the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, India overtook China to become the most populous country, and artificial intelligence overtook our lives! Barbie , Oppenheimer, and the FIFA Women’s Soccer World Cup captivated the world, but not quite as much as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which saw her become Time magazine’s Person of the Year. Our sponsors had to grapple with a lot in 2023, not least economic uncertainty in the marketplace. This led to many finding it challenging to rationalize investment.

Through it all, the Sponsorship team of Raylie, Young and Mohan continued working with sponsors, old and new, strengthening relationships and building new ones. The highpoint for the Sponsorship team was getting the support of over 30 sponsors for the 11th International Urban Sketchers Symposium, held in Auckland in April. The sponsors who had taken booths in the Art Market, were delighted with the opportunity to meet, show and discuss with over 400 urban sketchers from 30 countries !

Other highlights included Drawing Attention continuing to attract advertisements from Art Bag, Blick and Gwartzman’s; the Regional Events through the year in Firenze (Italy), Sao Paolo (Brazil), Namur (Belgium), Ohio (USA), and Johannesburg (South Africa) were generously supported by numerous sponsors - Da Vinci, Hahnemuhle, Schmincke, Canson, Daniel Smith, Royal & Langnickel, Caran d’Ache, Lyra, Dixon Ticonderoga, QOR, Quarto, Sakura, Princeton, and many more; working with the Membership team on the Chapter Admin Handbook; and working with the Education and Communications teams on a soon-to-be announced youth initiative. The year ended with work starting on the 12th International Urban Sketchers Symposium, to be held in Buenos Aires, in October 2024.
