PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE A proud facility with a dated campus aesthetic, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital sought to stand out in a dense neighborhood of sleek glass towers without discarding the robust gestures of its past. The architectural and clinical concerns were further complicated by the desperate need to solve their site access and circulation issues, as current conditions result in visitors queuing in vehicular lanes for over an hour just to enter the campus.

Two lanes created at the front of the site will turn off the main road and descend to the B2 Level of the new Parking Garage. These new lanes add 630 meters of vehicular queuing which will resolve the serious congestion the campus faces today. Pedestrian flow is also considerable because the campus sits along an urban promenade and above a public train stop. To capture this movement and help the hospital capitalize on the activity, we created a sunken plaza below the new Clinic Tower that would act as a retail space, destination place, and hospital access point.

The strong expression of the existing hospital’s front facade was a gesture we wished to honor in the new Clinic Tower. The stone facade of the new tower peels back to reveal a glass curtain wall of the same dimensions as the wedge-shaped curtain wall that protrudes from the original hospital’s arching mass. The juxtaposition of archway and curtain wall is reversed in the new building, as the curtain wall frames and displays a series of arched, triple-height communal spaces at the front of the tower.

Renderings were outsourced to Shanghai-based visual graphics firm, Bezier CG. I took command of quality assurance across continents (and timezones), providing aesthetic direction to Bezier CG throughout the modeling and rendering phases. Above are rendering guidelines sent to Bezier CG at various stages of the rendering process for the final rendering seen below.

PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE CallisonRTKL was contracted to design the exterior and develop C+S drawings after a separate architecture firm had already begun developing the plans and - as a consequence - defining the building mass. The biggest challenge was interpreting the operationally-driven planning into a holistic and compelling aesthetic concept. Through analysis, we were able to clarify gestures of form and rhythm from the plans, while also using our own clinical planning expertise to propose planning alternates and improvements that further benefited the design.

Relocating the patient bed tower to the back of the site creates the ideal space for a new centrally-located main entrance. We designed this new public space to better merge the new building with the remaining facilities. The planning of public spaces was initially in the scope of the planning firm, but we convinced both the client and the other firm that it was more appropriate that CallisonRTKL control that layout. By adopting this task into our scope, we were not only able to create an improved harmony between the exterior aesthetic and entry experience, but also increase our fee percentage on the overall project.

SIGNIFICANCE OF PROJECT EXPERIENCE As Fort Knox transitions from an active duty base - with a resident soldier population - to a training facility, the US Army needed a smaller medical clinic to replace its outdated, full-scale hospital. Working for the US Government proved to be a stimulating challenge. All aspects of the project design were subject to strict protocols and constraints, such as Anti-Terrorism Force Protection guidelines which evaluated the building’s resistance to explosives.

Visual communication is an essential tool used to illustrate ideas and build consensus during the design development phase. The diagrams above were provided to the client to demonstrate key clinical efficiencies. Invited to design competition by new client
SIGNIFICANCE OF PROJECT EXPERIENCE This competition was a quick, two-week blitz to propose a design concept and program strategy for a sports medicine clinic near downtown Dubai. Our submission separates patient-care components with massing that rotates to orient toward the Burj al Arab Jumeirah, two kilometers directly northwest. The soaring sail feature activates the rooftop while reinforcing the waterfront theme expressed throughout the iconic local architecture. Though well-received, the project was unfortunately lost. The client ultimately decided to pursue a submission with a focus on outpatient rehabilitation, as opposed to our inpatient and surgical focused submission.

SIGNIFICANCE OF PROJECT EXPERIENCE Jefferson Regional Medical Center has an aging inpatient and diagnostic chassis as well as a quickly deteriorating infrastructure, and requested CallisonRTKL to design a phasing strategy to refresh their facilities and operation. Healthcare masterplanning projects may not always include opportunities to design but are nevertheless great exercises due to the complexity of problem solving and immersive client interaction.

A building doesn’t stop working for you once it is built. There are opportunities in the form of publication, business development, exposure, and accolades that come from organizing and submitting a project for a design award. It is often my role to develop project submissions for particular design awards, such as AIA Built and Unbuilt, TSA Design Award, AIA AAH, and internal CallisonRTKL WIP publications.

SUSTAINABILITY AND LEED I worked on the sustainability team while at SCB: primarily researching LEED credits, creating diagrams that demonstrate compliance, and applying for credits with USGBC. Additionally, SCB’s sustainability team was contracted by PG&E to help develop a publication on Net Zero Energy by analyzing load reduction strategies in high-rise residential towers in San Francisco. I coordinated with facade consultants, examining how varying aesthetic and planning design decisions can affect the energy modeling. I also researched and developed the graphics examining plug load impact on total energy consumption and strategies on how to reduce energy use through appliance selection.

My Submissions to Internal Competition
AIA Dallas hosts an annual public outreach exhibit at the North Park Mall to raise awareness for design and local architecture firms. Each year, CallisonRTKL holds an internal ‘idea competition’ to define our firm’s creative direction. Participation is voluntary, but the firm sponsored building costs and program fees.

Little Free Libraries/Libros Libres is a Dallas literacy and community design initiative that uses free book exchanges to build community and promote a culture of reading. Little Free Library is a global volunteering initiative to build excitement for reading and accessibility to books in local 16 in. communities. EESTAIRS DESIGN COMPETITION EeStairs Design Competition is an event organized by Dutch stair manufacturer EeStair. The challenge was to design a repeatable balustrade exclusively from a simple 5mm x 50mm metal strip. The design submission was required to keep constructibility and economic modularity in mind. My design imagines seemingly continuous metal ribbons, not only twisting up the stairs but also twisting upon themselves. This creates the illusion of a transparent-to-opaque gradient across the balustrade’s length, while also generating dazzling shadow patterns.
48 HOUR FILM FEST: PUFF PUFF PAST While by no means a masterpiece, this short film my friends and I created for the 48 Hour Film Festival is one of my most gratifying achievements. The 48HFF is a competition where teams of professionals, aspiring students, and wannabe amateurs are provided with a random genre, character, prop, and line of dialogue on Friday night which must be woven into a completed short film by Sunday night. No one in my group had any experience with film making, so our measure for success was submitting a finished product on time; a feat that half the teams did not achieve. My ability to adapt to new softwares was tested during this endeavor when I took the responsibility of editing the footage in Adobe Premier, a program that I had previously never used.
