Wiima Weekly Freight Index

Ocean spot rates from Asia to N. Europe and the Mediterranean continued to decline last week, now over 20% below their July highs. An early start to the peak season and Red Sea-driven delays pushed import volumes from Asia to peak in June and July, and with the holiday shipping window closing, rates may fall further as seasonal demand eases.

On the Transpacific, peak season volumes are projected to dip slightly in September before a significant drop-off in October. The looming October 1st port worker strike on the East Coast has kept rates elevated, but as the shipping deadline to avoid strike disruptions passes, we’re starting to see reports of rate discounts and expectations of significant drops soon.

West Coast rates may remain buoyant as volumes shift from the East Coast, but an East Coast strike would create backlogs, reduced capacity, and further pressure on West Coast operations. Maersk estimates that even a one-week strike could take four to six weeks to fully recover from, with cascading delays.

Air cargo is feeling the strain of surging e-commerce volumes, not just in China but across air hubs in Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines. Air Canada is also bracing for potential disruptions from a pilot strike next week. Air Index rates from China to N. America and Europe were $5.82/kg and $3.45/kg last week, showing how tight capacity remains, even before Q4 demand spikes. Read more...
