The week in review…

Schlitterbahn to open music venues… I hope everyone enjoyed the ten short minutes of springtime because from now until October we will all suffer. The good news is, we have a big ole ocean out there and a shiny new water park to cool our heels in. And word on the street is that our shiny new water park, aka: Schlitterbahn, will have several live music venues in the complex. My source tells me that they will be varying sizes, the largest of which will accommodate up to 2500 people. That tells me that we’ll probably be seeing some big acts heading our way in the near future, and being that the corporation is based out of New Braunfels, I’m sensing Texas Country will probably be the genre of choice. More will be revealed…
Make a joyful sound…
Jake Ward and the Coast Riders played Giggity’s on Saturday night The live music schedule was off the hook last week. I had the pleasure of catching shows by the Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX), Melissa Brooke (Ft. Worth, TX), Mike Blakely (Buchanan Dam, TX), Noel McKay & Brennen Leigh (Austin, TX), The Derailers (Austin, TX), Jake Ward (Corpus Christi, TX) and Uel Jackson (Port Aransas, TX). I don’t know where to start. It was all great. I learned that the Thieves have a new CD coming out
The Derailers played the Back Porch on Saturday They have started alternating Stevie Start, Uel Jackson and Ruben Limas each week to keep the jam fresh. Uel took it this week and the players who showed up: John Ramsey (drums), Tom Doran (guitar and vocals), Chris Jordan (bass), Sierra Jackson (sizzling vocals), Paul Taylor (piano and vocals), Brandon Stiewig (lead guitar), etc, showed astonishing talent. I love it when players, who have never played together before, find a groove and nail it. I really dig the direction this jam is taking.
The Port A Mischief Posse stages an impromptu concert with Billy Snipes at the old Tarpon Ice House I got a coconut telegraph alert last week that Tiffany Tuesday had put a call out to the underground Port A Mischief Posse and there Noel McKay and Brennen Leigh played was a conspiracy in the making. Their last Shorty’s last Saturday night known adventure was a raid on the mayor’s house last Fourth of July where unrequested yard decorations were distributed in broad daylight. shortly with eight original tunes on it. These The call I received last week was Tiffany’s cry guys just keep getting better and better. Melissa for help. It seems she’s been feeling nostalgic played Giggity’s on Friday and it was her first about all the many nights we played music at show back on the island since relocating to our beloved (and now defunct) Tarpon Ice Ft. Worth. She told me that the move has been House and decided to organize a flash mob of good for her career and she’s networking with sorts and stage a quick impromptu concert at the some big names up there. She’ll be back at Ice House. The only problem is the new owners Giggity’s the first weekend in August. Mike hadn’t showed up yet since Paul Fain sold the Blakely had a well attended show at the Back place and we not only didn’t have a clue who Porch and sounded great as always. He had master guitarist, Larry Nye, in tow (as they were, we had no idea if they usual) and really set the country tone for would approve of our musical the next night when famed Austin honky trespassing or not. So in the spirit tonkers, The Derailers, roared into town. of the Mischief Posse, we threw Actually, country was the tone of choice caution to the wind and showed just about everywhere last weekend. Noel up anyway. We had a bare bones McKay and Brennen Leigh also put on sound system and a generator, a stellar performance at Shorty’s. Their but soon discovered they’d left material is all original and witty, with the electricity on, so we set up intricate bluegrass harmonies and dual in the very front by the street guitar pickin’—definitely listening room where we had a little light and caliber—which didn’t always mix well some picnic tables. I’m not sure with the rowdy crowd at Shorty’s. They what the charges are for stealing stuck with it though and gave us a great electricity but we plugged in performance. Jake, you might remember, Our pals Billy Snipes and Sean won the battle of the bands competition Hunter were there to help make some joyful noise and when we Melissa Brooke at Brewster Street last October to be did, about 20 people showed played Giggity’s included in the ZiegFest line-up. Since up out of nowhere and gathered last Friday night then, they’ve enlisted the talents of Independent Thieves’ fiddle player, around and cheered us on. It was Owen Fitzsimmons, and their spot on very spontaneous and totally Port A. After about a half an hour or so, we all decided not to push Americana sound has exploded. David King, Garret Wieland and Owen Fitzsimmon of Independent Thieves at Shorty’s last weekend DO NOT MISS LIST Ray Wiley Hubbard… The Snake Man himself, Ray Wiley Hubbard (Wimberley, TX) will play the Black Marlin Bar and Grill at the golf course in Port A this Saturday. This will be the first installment of a ten week concert series the new venue will host each Saturday night. Other artists slated to perform include Junior Brown, Hal Ketchum, The Rankin Twins, The Tejas Brothers, Jason Eady, Brian Keane and others. Ray Wiley is considered an elder statesman of the Texas
music world. He’s been around before Redneck Mothers had red necks. His wit and groove are nothing short of genius. Hubbard plays a rhythmic bottleneck, usually in an open key, that’s somewhere between blues, country and gospel… I just call it folk. He idolized Lightning Hopkins and Tony Joe White… not to mention vintage Ray Wylie Hubbard guitars and tube amps. His onstage banter will play the Black is fast and loose and Marlin on Saturday. hilarious. It’s also a little frightening. Ray Wiley is required reading. They are only going to sell 150 tickets to this show so you better get off your wallet pretty quick. www.blackmarlinbarandgrill.com
Coming this weekend… Well, it’s going to be another big week in live music. Reckless Kelly and Josh Ward are playing Brewster tonight, Thursday the 5th. On Friday, my pals Mandy Rowen & Billy Abel (Austin, TX) return to Shorty’s. They flat knocked it out of the park when they played there a few weeks back. Love these guys! Also on Friday, blues rocker J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX), will play Giggity’s, Uel Jackson will play the Gaff, Jake Ward will play the Executive Surf Club and one of the hottest guitar pickers around, Davin James (Houston, TX) will play the Back Porch. (I always mention his master guitar skills because he’s so much more that a country singer… reminds me of Brad Paisley or Keith Urban). On Saturday, the Tejas Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) will play the Porch, Jef “With One F” Wilson will play the Gaff, the reigning king of TexMex, Joe King Carrasco will play a show at the Surf Club with the Krayolas. The Krayolas are a teen band grown up out of San Antonio that features the great Hector Saldano. That’s some great booking to match Joe King with the Krayolas. And finally on Saturday, a new band fronted by Debra ScottBrown called Dreaming In Colors (Corpus Christi, TX) will debut at Giggity’s.
On the horizon… And on the horizon, look for upcoming shows by Randy Rogers, Wade Bowen, Stoney LaRue, Shelley King, Thieving Birds, Uncle Lucius, The Whiskey Sisters, HOBO, The Rocky Bottom String Band, Carter Sampson, The Knotty Pines and Shinyribs… stay tuned.
