STATE October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month By Todd Hunter, District 32

October is designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This important awareness campaign originated as a “Day of Unity” in 1981 to bring attention to the issue of domestic violence in communities around the country. Spearheaded by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), the “Day of Unity”, and subsequent awareness month, created a platform for victims, survivors and advocates to come together to give a voice to this troubling issue and offer support for those impacted by domestic violence, both directly and indirectly. Research has shown the key to domestic violence prevention is stopping it before it begins, which is why this educational awareness month is so important. We want to share some information about domestic violence in hopes that by working together, we can break the cycle of abuse in our communities. When it comes to domestic violence, it is important to recognize there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ victim. Domestic violence affects millions of individuals and families in the country each year regardless of economic level, ethnicity, religion, age or education. In fact, NCADV reports that one in five women and one in seven men have been a victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, includes behaviors such as physical violence, sexual violence, threats and emotional or psychological violence. Incidents of abuse can range from a single occurrence to severe episodes over a number of years. For those seeking help and support from domestic violence, the importance of local, state, and national programs and shelters cannot be underestimated, as indicated by a report released by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). Each year, NNEDV conducts a survey of over 1,700 domestic violence programs and shelters in the United States over the course of a 24hour period. The NNEDV’s National Census of Domestic Violence Services (Census) gives an unparalleled snapshot of the number of individuals requesting services, the type of services requested, and the experiences of both victims and advocates on an average day. In 2015, the Census found that in one day, over 71,000 adults and children received services from a local shelter or program. Meanwhile, an additional 12,197 victims were unable to access necessary services due to too much demand. In addition to face-to-face support services, local, state and national domestic violence hotline staff answered calls from 21,335 victims on this very same day, which equates to almost 15 calls per minute. In our area, there are several different organizations offering support for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.

The Women’s Shelter of South Texas serves victims and survivors of family violence and sexual assault living in a 12-county region of South Texas through a range of comprehensive services. These services include providing shelter, access to medical care, and basic necessities for victims, counseling services for families, resource referrals and criminal justice advocacy. The Women’s Shelter offers support 24-hours a day in person or by calling its hotline at 1-800-850-HURT or 361-881-8888. For more information about the Women’s Shelter of South Texas, please visit the organization’s website here: http://thewomensshelter.org . In addition to the Women’s Shelter of South Texas, the Corpus Christi Police Department Victim Assistance Program provides counseling, assistance with victim’s compensation claims and legal support for victims through its Family Violence Unit. Along with victim’s services, the program also offers training and education for law enforcement on domestic violence and sexual assault issues. To learn more about the Corpus Christi Police Department Victim Assistance Program, please visit the Family Violence Unit webpage here: http:// www.cctexas.com/government/ccpd/unitsand-divisions/investigations-bureau/familyviolence-unit . The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence also provides information on a number of national support services including domestic violence hotline information, legal organizations and resources for battered children. In addition, the NCADV offers detailed information about the affects of abuse, warning signs and statistics in order to help educate communities on the devastating impact domestic violence has on families. To access these resources, please visit NCADV’s website here: http://www.ncadv.org . This month, please join me in remembering those who have tragically lost their life as a result of domestic violence, celebrate those who have prevailed from these violent circumstances, and find ways to connect those individually impacted by domestic violence. It is my hope that by working together, we can be a catalyst for breaking the cycle of domestic violence our community and helping those affected by abuse to have the support necessary for a safer future. If you would like to review more about the legislature, please visit the Texas Legislature online at www.capitol.state.tx.us/ . If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512-463-0672; District Office; 361-949-4603). - State Representative Todd Hunter, District 32 Rep. Select Committee on Property Tax Reform and Relief Hearing Credited with Tax Rate Cuts Committee hears testimony in Plano Property owners from Tarrant and surrounding counties who have seen taxes on their homes and businesses skyrocket turned out in large numbers to the Senate Select Committee on Property Tax Reform and Relief’s hearing Monday in Plano at Collin County Spring Creek Campus. Tarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector Ron Wright stated that one-third of Tarrant County’s taxing units have cut rates for the first time and credited the Senate Select committee for these results. Sen. Hancock quipped, “The committee should hold another hearing there next year and keep saving the taxpayers money!” Dallas City Councilman Phillip Kingston noted that Dallas also cut its tax rate after a double-digit rise in property values following the committee’s stop in Arlington, Texas, in the spring. Collin County Judge Keith Self also spoke to committee members, stating that the county this year adopted the Effective Tax Rate to keep its Tax Rate in check. He noted that taxable value in Collin County grew almost 12 percent this year. “Collin County reduced their tax rate to the effective rate of 20.84 cents, the lowest of the major Texas counties,” said Sen. Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston), who chairs the committee. “From testimony of a Dallas City Council member, it is apparent that due to the Senate Select committee’s visit to the cities of Dallas and San Antonio, both cities have finally cut their tax rates. That’s finally recognizing the obvious, because when appraisal values skyrocket, tax rates should be reduced, otherwise property taxes go through the roof.” “The taxpayers who came to Plano today to share their experiences is appreciated,” Sen. Taylor concluded. “It’s very important that taxpayers come and make their voices heard on the tremendous growth in property tax bills, which have been rising 2.5 times faster than Texans’ paychecks.” Plano is the seventh city the Senate Select committee has visited on the road. “We’ve continued to hear stories about taxpayers feeling threatened that they have to sell their homes in order to pay their tax bills,” Chairman Bettencourt concluded. “Today we’ve heard from retirees and other folks on fixed incomes who have seen their property taxes double, and that is causing taxpayers to demand change in the system.” There is no word on when/if the committee will visit Corpus Christi.

On the Rocks

Backwater Adventures By Joey Farah Farah’s Fishing Adventures us some great action as well. Topwaters at first light and small DOA CAL SHADS have been the best baits. Natural colored plastics have been good in clear water conditions. The surf has been alive with fish. A walk in the first two guts at sunrise and sunset have seen most everyone catching good trout. Small top waters will keep you away from the skip jacks and bring a few big fat surf rider trout to hand every evening. I’ve been seeing a monster difference in anglers using a piece of fluorocarbon leader. Most of the year a clear 30lb leader is fine. Now as our water conditions are so clear a fluorocarbon leader will allow that leader to This is just one of many disappear. Their eyes are large and they can see detail in a flash. This month is one of the best here along the Texas coast. In the weeks and months to come we will see this migration of baitfish bring a flurry of AWESOME fishing our way. Then we will have the grass shrimp migrate through as great fishing and the best weather will be here the next three months. Plan a visit with family and friends, give me a call and let’s go have an adventure. Always check out our catches on FACEBOOK AT JOEY FARAHS FISHING. 361-442-8145.

In the last few weeks I watched millions of finger mullet rushing out to sea, and the schools of redfish that followed them were spectacular. Now

The trout have come alive and are everywhere during the lunar feeding periods. Key in on brown pelicans to find the schools of shad. Both trout and reds will be following them. When fish are dormant they will be holding in the deepest areas. Look for grassy bottoms to disappear then serve for bait. Those bait balls will rise to the surface as predator species get hungry. By Jay Gardner Geez Louise! I love this time of year! As I write this, the beach is completely flat, there is an extremely light west wind, and the temps at night are getting closer to lending themselves to opening the windows and turning the A/C off and sleeping in true comfort. Some of the boys are headed to the dove lease this afternoon, and the rest of the boys are already down the beach. What a glorious time! Too bad I’m still chained to this computer chair. Sharkathon went off again this year, and it was a grand time. Although I didn’t catch much, we had lots of visitors in the camp which took the edge off the slow fishing. Jacob got on the board with an 18” trout, and then Repo followed it with a 20” trout, although it didn’t make the leader board. Thanks again to all the folks that put Sharkathon together, and we’ll see you again next time.

It’s still not too late to sign up and fish the Babes of Baffin ladies fishing tournament this weekend. You’ll need to go to the sign in at Marker 37 at 6pm on Friday to get entered, with Dwade with a nice Spanish mackeral the tournament of course being on Saturday. If you missed your chance, you can also show up to the weigh in from 2-3pm move through headed south on their migration Saturday and see all the fish being donated to as well. I may have to try to sneak down the TPWD. It’s a really neat deal. Unfortunately, beach and see if there are any lurking around I will likely miss this one. I say “likely”, the jetties down south. because I am supposed to be headed to Key We bombed around the skiff the other day West to Emily and Randy’s wedding. Clever Fish Keep Cool

Bikers Start Your Engines!

Ocean warming is occurring at such a rapid rate that fish are searching for cooler waters to call home.

study provides a mechanistic explanation for why fish may move, and a way of testing it,” Johansen say.

A group of international scientists have new evidence that coral-reef fish – who struggle to adapt to the warmer ocean temperatures brought about by global climate change – may instead opt to relocate to cooler parts of the ocean.

Picking up and moving may not be the silver bullet for some species, particularly those coral reef fish which are dependent on reefs for habitat. Corals cannot move pole-ward as fast as the temperature increases are predicted; Corals and coral dependent fish will have to adapt, or move to deeper waters where living conditions are less than ideal.

In experiments using a common coral reef fish, the blue-green damselfish, Chromis viridis, was acclimated to 2-4 degrees Celsius above their normal summer temperatures over a 27 week period. “When fish have to deal with increased temperature, there are physical consequences. They need more energy to cope, and they may not be able to handles stress, or reproduce, or even grow,” says marine scientist Dr. Jacob Johansen from The University of Texas at Austin. “Fish that were acclimated to the highest temperatures lost 30% of their body weight and some of them died,” says lead author Adam Habary. “But, when given the slightest chance, we found that fish can seek out temperatures that they’ve evolved to be in over thousands of years, to mitigate the impact of increasing temperatures and not sacrifice critical physiological processes”, says Johansen Most prior research has focused on the capacity for animals to adapt to increasing temperatures, given that animals have adapted to changes in temperature in the past. However, previous adaptations happened at evolutionary timescales, roughly one degree Celsius temperature change per million years. Global climate change is occurring at a much faster rate, with sea surface temperature predicted to increase by 2-4 degrees Celsius by the end of the 21st century. Marine fish are faced with a tough decision, as they will need to adapt or move to avoid death. Instead of looking into how fish can adapt, the new research took a different approach by asking, what if fish moved? In fact, what if entire ecosystems were capable of moving to the cooler temperatures, towards the poles or in deeper water? There is already evidence that many coral reef fish and pelagic fish, like tuna, are moving in response to warmer ocean waters, and that this is beginning to affect global fisheries. “Our

In addition, ocean warming does not occur as a steady slide upward on the thermometer. It often occurs as severe and increasingly frequent heating events. “It’s these transient periods that are causing the most damage,” Johansen notes. This was seen earlier this year on the Great Barrier Reef, when temperatures rose by up to 4 degrees Celsius for several weeks, causing widespread coral bleaching and severe physiological stress in many fish. Johansen and fisheries biologists from the University of Copenhagen and James Cook University collaborated on the study, Adapt, move or die – how will tropical coral reef fishes cope with ocean warming, which was published today in the journal Global Change Biology. The research was supported by Generalmajor J.F. Classen Foundation, Frøken Ellen Backe & Margaret Munn Tovborg Jensens foundations as well as the Familien Muller-Geiels foundation to A.H. and an ARC Super Science Fellowship and infrastructure and research allocation from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at JCU.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Will you marry me…

Last Saturday was a very special day in Port Aransas. I had two weddings to attend and both of them were absolutely fabulous. The first one was on the beach behind the Beach Lodge. It was the marriage of two old friends of mine, Tiffany Raven and Kevin “JR” Wood. Paul Fain presided They met at the over the wedding of Tarpon Ice House Tiffany Raven and in 2008. It seemed Kevin Wood on the only fitting that the beach in Port A last owner of the Ice weekend House, Paul Fain, marry them. It was a beautiful affair with a hundred flowing ribbons dancing in the breeze. These two kids are meant for each other and it was exciting to witness Tiffany make an honest man of JR. I wish the best to these two wonderful people. After their wedding, we had to hustle Judge Dunkin Neblitt presided over the over to the wedding of Tiana block party on Brundrett Street Worsham and Vanessa where Tiana Brundrett last Saturday, Worsham and Vanessa Brundrett tied the knot. Our own Judge Duncan Neblett presided over the affair. These girls threw one world class party in the spirit of old Port A. They actually closed off the street between Oleander and Alister and invited the whole city, of which I’d say 500 or so took them up on it. It was something else. They had great food and drink and music (Scarecrow People) and it rocked ‘til the wee hours. Tiana and Vanessa have been together for years and it was certainly a great celebration now that the state of Texas grants same sex marriages. Congratulation girls, you make us proud and you are a beautiful couple. Salute’!!!

Scattered shots…

I saw some wonderful music last weekend. For starters, our favorite Okie Joe Mack (Tahlequah, OK) played a couple of shows last week at Giggity’s and Shorty’s. Joe has the hillbilly, fast as lightning bluegrass guitar down to a science and he pulled no stops at his shows last week. We talked about the possibility of having an “Okie Invasion Festival” sometime and bringing

his friends from north of the Trinity such as Carter Sampson, Tu r n p i k e Troubadours, Sky Smeed, Thomas Trapp, Joe Mack played etc. That one Giggity’s last sounds like a Wednesday and Shorty’s winner. We had a last Friday pleasant surprise at the Shorty’s show. Our Texas hill country buddy, Al Barlow, was in town for Tiffany and JR’s wedding and Matt Hole and graced us with a couple the new Hot Rod of songs. There’s no Gang with Cody finer songwriter around Strong and J.M. than Al Barlow. On Muniz played Friday, Matt Hole and Giggity’s on h i s Friday n e w H o t Rod Gang with Cody Strong on drums and J.M. Muniz on upright bass tore it up at Giggity’s. On Saturday, we were Hamilton entertained by the funky Loomis played blues of Hamilton the Back Porch Loomis (Houston, TX) at on Saturday the Back Porch and the smoothest country crooner in the business, Todd Dorn (San Antonio, TX) at Giggity’s.

Todd Dorn with Oscar Rios on drums and Woodie Lawson on bass played Giggity’s on Saturday

DO NOT MISS LIST Coming this weekend…

The weather has hit its sweet spot and there is a ton of stuff going on in Port A this weekend. On Friday, Scarecrow People will play Treasure Island, the lively reggae of Chanklas (formerly Picklefish) will play Giggity’s and the always folky Independent Thieves will play Shorty’s. On Saturday, the annual Old Town Parade and Festival begins. This event is put on by the Port Aransas Preservation & Historical Association. This event celebrates Port Aransas and all her history with Pat

For a schedule of all the events and times, go to www.portaransasmuseum.org. Also on Saturday, Shorty’s will hold their second Art Show this year. This event showcases many of the town’s local artists and will be held from 1-5. Stevie Start will provide the music. Later at Shorty’s, reggae master, Billy Snipes and the Rasta Cowboys will be performing. Over at Giggity’s on Saturday, The Roselly’s (Bristol, England) will bring their unique version of “British Americana”. I’d say that is pretty accurate. The Lavens (San Antonio, TX) will also be on that bill. The Roselly’s lead singer, Rebecca Roselly, and their guitarist/ fiddler, Simon Roselly, are nothing short of spellbinding. Rebecca’s voice is pure and driven and the band sounds like they’ve played the Texas Roadhouse circuit for the last 20 years. Their union with The Lavens makes perfect sense to me. They must come from a parallel universes. Both are family bands with the youngest beautiful daughter on vocals, the good looking son

on lead guitar and pop’s on bass. The Lavens have one unfair advantage in the form of matriarch, Janna Laven, who has enough talent to go around. And speaking of Brits, you may have heard of another little act from the UK… Elton John will play a concert at the American Bank Center in Corpus. I feel no Al Barlow surprised need to tell you us with a couple of about Elton John… songs at the Joe Mack make that Sir Elton show last Friday at John. Also on Shorty’s Saturday, the man who coined “Island Time,” Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) will play the Back Porch and Rich Lockhart will play Treasure Island

On the horizon…

On the near horizon, mark your calendars for the 15th and the 34th Annual Pig Party at Shorty’s with Ty Dietz, Selfie and the James Little Band. Also, the annual Port A Art About will be held that Saturday, as well as shows by Randy McAllister and Somethin’ Silky.
